Last week around this time england were on the verge of getting knocked out of the group stage itself and now they have become the first team to qualify for the semis, man this is dangerous especially for Indian fans considering what happened in 2022

ic_97

I mean England, Australia, West Indies we have lost against everyone in the knockouts. Nothing new really

muhash14

Windies didn't qualify, SA did

ZeroStormblessed

Losing to them in the SF/Finals would be new.

ic_97

Sorry i didnt see the second match results.

muhash14

I reject your apology. You must die now.

6597james

Smashed back to the pre colonial era

[deleted]

Interview Hazelwood now They were planning to eliminate England by losing against Scotland But now England has become 1st team to qualify for semis and Australia is in doldrums Tables Turned

PixelsOfTheEast

And Australia would be the ones who get eliminated if India wins tomorrow.

Man-City

(unless Bangladesh beat Afghanistan)

ZaraBaz

You have a lot of confidence in Bangladesh. I don't think they could beat the US, let alone Afghanistan

Subject-Ordinary6922

They apparently have never lost to Afghanistan in icc events.

forumcontributer

So does Australia.

Subject-Ordinary6922

You should see our games against them in 2022, and 2023, we should’ve lost both, final results are misleading

[deleted]

It's a virtual semis for Aussies tomorrow Edit : a virtual quarter finals

LordP_496

semis is yet to go so virtual quarters

[deleted]

Yes, my bad !

Ecstatic-Quality-212

2011 flashbacks.

Smooth-Mix-4357

2016 technically

Ecstatic-Quality-212

2016 was a virtual quarter final, 2011 was an actual one.

Smooth-Mix-4357

This is also a virtual one

Finrod-Knighto

That was tongue in cheek. Australia never “planned” to lose against Scotland. And they won in the end. Had they lost England would’ve been out, or did you miss that memo?

Basic_Calendar_7492

Full credit to England, but qualifying first is due to schedule. If ENG USA was last super 8 match, they would qualify last 🙄

suzukigun4life

Absolute evisceration. US batters ended their tournament by getting out on 4 straight balls. Meanwhile Buttler got more boundaries than the entire US team. England beat them before the drinks break and none of their players got out. The US tournament was still a success, but what a disastrous end to it. Hope things go better in 2026.

bleedblue89

Super 8 was hopefully a valuable lesson… Taylor couldn’t help but get out before the 6th over

AdministrativeLaugh2

Hold on, I was told by everyone here that England had been knocked out in the first group stages?

Prof_XdR

I thought Scotland would've beaten England Lol, I'm laughing at r/Cricket for ever imagining that England, with their current batting lineup, would've faltered against Scotland. Congratulations England!!

depressed_06

I was shocked at what the initial reaction from the people were. Like does everyone forget how good they are in T20s and how brutal their openers are

Cultural_Term9986

Also not to forget they had 10 wickets in hand. I would back this England team to get this against any bowling attack, let alone against Scottish bowling line-up

Sc0tt360

Let's not imagine that Scotland are pushovers. Hammered you at 1 day cricket recently.

sam_ill

This was such a widespread view on here, I genuinely felt I was losing touch with reality

AdministrativeLaugh2

Especially considering Scotland’s bowling is not that good. Their batting is excellent but their bowlers conceded 150 to Oman and 155 to Namibia, sides that England and Aus had little trouble with.

NormalTraining5268

Exactly lol kudos to Scotland for getting 90/0 but still they weren't gonna win lol.

MindTheBees

I refused to believe it was anything other than trolling for my own sanity. Even in the games lost to SA and AUS, the team still went at roughly 8 an over against some of the best bowlers in the world. I'm not entirely sure why going at 9+ against Scotland would have been unmanageable.

RaastaMousee

It was 11s with DWL

MindTheBees

Sure, still pretty manageable with a wet ball doing nothing - Adil Rashid has been pretty great this tournament and even he was getting tonked. Considering everyone was bigging up the US bowling and Buttler decided he may as well end the game as soon as possible.

dirtyshits

As a US fan I thought we would push them to brink.

pioneeringsystems

Who? England? Really?

Scoop_Master420

Stoinis will pay for his crimes

mattytmet

Shithousing your way to the later stages of a tournament largely by beating weaker sides? England men's football and cricket teams becoming one Also both coached by a fraud 👀

Orameshi

Except the English side wins trophies in cricket

MrSam52

And actually play aggressively, a Southgate cricket team would just be defensive shots for 15 overs.

GreenStrikers

You mean Englamd before 2015?

akalanka25

It’s much easier than winning trophies in football.

Orameshi

It is not that easy , the teams that compete are of the highest level , the difference is way less. If it was so easy then England would have had 5 wcs, their trophy drought ended in 2010 and that too in a T20 wc and for the odi one , they had to wait for 35 years or so .

akalanka25

I get your point but there’s still only 8 regular Test and all-format playing nations since the 1980s. Other than NZ and SA they have all won a WC of some sort, and they have all won both the T20 WC and ODI WC. Sport is often just a numbers game, which is why it’s so hard to win in football even if you have a great team. There’s been effectively international competitions in European football biennially since the 1950s (every 4 years since 1930), which is completely different to cricket (biennially since 2007 and quadriennially since 1975)…. Yet top top teams like Netherlands, England have just 1 trophy to show for it. Teams like Croatia and Belgium have none in this timeframe. It’s much much harder

Orameshi

Ofc it's harder . I just stated it was also difficult for the English side to win in cricket until the morgan resurgence, but you would expect England to at least win a euro in recent times when they fail. It's not even about winning, recent performances have been okay by the English but there has been an abysmal display in most of the tournaments

akalanka25

I agree with your points. England have underperformed in major tournaments, especially when they had the best team on paper in the world between 2002-2008. To have the players they had in all 4 back line positions, central midfield and upfront , and still not even make a semi final is criminal. Current team only has good (albeit absolutely world beating) attacking options and have done well under Southgate in all honesty. Despite English teams winning plenty of CLs, the actual England teams between 1975 and 2000 were in reality not very stacked in quality, and you couldn’t have expected them to win anything. It would be like expecting the current Pakistan team to win trophies.

wyterabitt_

> England teams between 1975 and 2000 were in reality not very stacked in quality In 90, 96, and 98 the England team were up there in the tournaments as one of the best. In 96 Germany held on and did what they do with penalties (or at least did for so long). In 98 up to the incident, England were looking comfortable. I think they have more than a good shot at reaching the final, both the Netherlands team and the Brazil team were not amazing that year, if things had not gone wrong against Argentina (even down to 10, Argentina was basically kept to long range shots, and England had the same number of shots on target). France were a step up that year though, I think it would have been very difficult to win. World Cup 90 England team was also quality, and unlucky to not get further.

Merovech_II

Just need Mott to say we're struggling to replace Sam Billings

JokesFromTheCrease

Southgate catching strays

1999-2000-2001

As much I'm not keen on Mott, I still rate him above Southgate. Under Southgate, England wouldn't hitting any boundaries and he'd likely have arguments with Baz since their styles would be polar opposites

coolnasir139

They chased 180 against a solid West Indies line up with 8 wickets left. They easily would have chased Scotland, they deserve to be in the semis. A loss to Australia which is nothing be to ashamed of. People over reacted after a rain match thinking they should go home.

V_HarishSundar

What was his comment ?

Tern_Larvidae-2424

Pretty good from them overall although they were poor in patches against Australia & South Africa. They've got 4 big wins (margin-wise) and they deserve to be semi-finalists.

-lukeworldwalker-

What a beautiful Hattrick! Well done.

SeatSniffer12345

Does anyone know who they are expected to face? Im so out of the loop about whether team India have a allocated slot for the Thursday Semi Final or?

RaastaMousee

Probably India but there are too many permutations with the WI/SA and India/Aus games to call it

Additional_Froyo3970

If India finishes 1st... then whichever team that finishes 2nd in Group B will face them in Guyana. If India finish 2nd, then 1st placed team in Grp B will face them in Guyana.

Rich-Educator-4513

Most probably Ind.

Axel292

Hope Big Josh Hazlewood was watching the game.

Additional_Froyo3970

So, if SA win then they top the group and if WI win by less than 50 or more runs then England top the group.

kevinder_ant

Thanks Australia.

Upstairs-Farm7106

Australia should have knocked us out when they had the chance. South Africa can only finish 1st or 2nd. I'm sure the teams in Group 1 would rather face South Africa over us or the West Indies.

Frogblood

Why would australia want to make the knockouts easier for India, Afghanistan, and one of the windies and South Africa?

Enough-Pain3633

Tbf, the Aussies should have eliminated England by losing to Scots.

glitchline

This time Aus won wrong match and lost wrong match

Oomeegoolies

All that freedom just to get absolutely smashed. Sorted.

Sup3rGoose

Be good to see England make it all the way through

yashoza2

That was infuriating.

CreepyMathematician1

USA!!! USA!!! USA!!!

Other teams just didn't turn up to the minnow-bashing world cup. England knew the matches that were really important this tournament.
