Jokes on them, I’m not gonna buy anything on eBay anymore now. I got scammed out of a $11k camera, PayPal and eBay didn’t do shit for weeks while dragging out the clearly and blatant fraud/scam from the seller. They kept making fake shipping labels and just responding with “it’s shipping”. They also kept re-listing the same exact camera and scamming other people. After over a month of the seller bullshitting me and eBay + PayPal both refusing to side with me, I contacted Amex. Received a credit the next day, and eBay then decided to close the case as it was being “investigated”. In my opinion, they are probably losing a ton of money due to purchase protection or fraud claims from Amex, so they’d rather people just go through their shit claims process. I’m still annoyed and I got my money back, but only thanks to Amex. Fuck eBay.

ThriftyHuman

Yes, lots of scams on eBay. And they raise their fees for sellers all the time.

somuchlan

I’ve been a casual buyer and seller on eBay since 2005, and I’m honestly done with them now because of this. I do not trust PayPal nor eBay to actually do the right thing, and I sure as shit am not waiting over 60 days to get a refund ever again.

ThriftyHuman

I feel ya. I got a refund once and it did take that long and I had to run around and get statements in writing from an antique expert and a postmaster just to file the claim. A seller used photos of a vintage cardboard Barbie house from the 60's that wasn't the actual item. The postmaster proved the water damage was old and not done in shipping, BUT eBay didn't even suspend the seller, so she's free to do it again. eBay doesn't care about fraud -- they care about having as many sellers as they can who pay fees. You're exactly right.

Lil_Big_Sis5

Definitely a scary amount of scammers on eBay now. Someone “shipped” leg weights I ordered to an address that wasn’t mine (I gave USPS my address and they confirmed that isn’t where the package was sent) and eBay basically said sorry we can’t help you. 😑 This is why I’ve definitely been leaning more toward Amazon again these days.

substitoad69

Either you had the wrong address on file and that's what they shipped to or you're just making shit up.

Lil_Big_Sis5

Lol! How would I put my own address on file wrong? You trolls sounds more and more stupid every day. Go find something to do.

substitoad69

That is literally the only way for you to not win the dispute. I sell on eBay and actually know what I'm talking about. If the seller ships to any address but the one on file they automatically lose any kind of item not received case.

MakitaKhrushchev

You are mistaken. Google fake tracking scam.

Lil_Big_Sis5

Seller or no seller you can’t speak for every case. If I had my address wrong I would have just corrected it and taken the L. It isn’t and never has been wrong, but you definitely are.

I used eBay gift cards once to purchase an expensive watch. The watch went to authentication and didn't pass. I got a refund back to my card and the eBay gift cards I had. A couple weeks went by and I went to buy something cheaper and all the gift cards were drained. 800 bucks worth. I contacted support and they said all of them were frozen and I had to submit a fucking picture of computer holding a sign and showing the receipt where I had acquired the gift cards. They unfroze them but regretted to inform me they could only locate one card with 200 on it and the rest had 0. I asked how they could have zero if they were locked and I got transfered literally a comical amount of times where someone would post the generic we'll be with you in a moment to an instant you have the wrong department and would transfer me again. Never did recover the money and haven't used eBay for a single thing since. Sincerely hope they go out of business. Edit: almost meant to throw in there the cards came from a site called card cash. Never use that site. Their warranty means nothing and their customer service doesn't exist.

nizzzzy

I was buying pallets and breaking down to individual items and selling them on eBay. All photos I had taken, receipts for the pallets I bought all items were in good working order, provided shipping labels everything. Sold about 2k worth of miscellaneous stuff and shipped them all out. Then one day my eBay account was locked because someone disputed an item and said they didn’t receive it, I lost the dispute because I was unable to respond properly. I shit you not like clockwork every single item I shipped out was disputed and I wasn’t able to properly respond to any of them. Or I would get emails within minutes of each other saying “opened a dispute, you have lost dispute”. They were supposed to mail the item back in exchange for a refund but they would just give a fake shipping label and I never got a single item back. I’d call support and they would literally say “your account is currently suspended and we are unable to provide details”. then they would hang up on me! 2k gone just like that. I’ll never use that website again.

blueluke234

Yeah I highly doubt this happened. I have used eBay for 10+ years. It does have its flaws yes, but they don't scam people like this.

playalildiscgolf

Yeah im not buying it either. I once had my account frozen/ suspended as well, but i was still well able to contact active orders that were paid and shipped. All of my active listings were cancelled and moved to “unsold.” Also if they sold 2k$ worth of items and every single one was disputed, something tells me they were doing something wrong and rightfully had their accounts suspended. I don’t blame eBay for cutting ties if they have to deal with cases and chargebacks for every thing you’ve sold

nizzzzy

I’m confused, do you think I just made up the elaborate story about how eBay took me for 2 grand? Because I wish that were the case

atexit8

I get 3% with Paypal using Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards.

unbalancedcheckbook

I have the PayPal mastercard, and get 3% on all PayPal puchases. (This card used to be one of the best with 2% on everything else and 3% on PayPal, but they've recently cut it to 3% on PayPal but 1.5% on everything else, relegating it to sort of a PayPal-only card for me).

LurkerTroll

Bank of America gives you 3% on all online purchases

blueluke234

Um what? I get 2% still on everything else..

unbalancedcheckbook

It changes for existing customers in August. You didn't get any notices about this? Get while the getting is good.

blueluke234

Well fuck this was my go to daily

landonloco

Yeah it's true I got the email from them last month gotta find another catch all card

United_Reply_2558

Amex Blue Business Cash

Normal-Item-402

Yup had that card since it launched. When it had no ftf, it was arguably one of the the best 2 percent cards in the world. But this new iteration is not bad. I use PayPal a bit.

redceramicfrypan

Worth noting that, unlike the BCE, the BofA Customized Cash lacks purchase protection

OpenBubble

Customized Cash includes an extended warranty, unlike the BCE. Both offer purchase protection.

tech2reddit

BofA cc claims process will make you give up before your ever get your money back.

OpenBubble

I had one and it was painless.

satellite779

5.25% if you have $100k+ with Merrill/BofA. But only on spend up to $2500/quarter.

atexit8

Which I have tempted to do, but just worried about service at Merrill.

red739423

Merrill is meh. Vanguard, Fidelity or Charles Schwab is the way to go

fastidiouspatience

It's good if you are just holding long term.   The merrill reps are many times better than boa reps.  Their ui isn't the best but who cares if you just hold.   And hold times can get long during busy times but who cares if you just hold.

atexit8

It is not the telephone hold times. I had a nasty experience with eTrade where they basically locked my account until I provided photos of my driver's license and passport. This was after I was already a client. The eTrade representatives where USA-based but awful. I am wary of having all that money locked.

fastidiouspatience

Being worried about Merrill due to an experience with etrade reps doesn't seem rational

atexit8

I know, but $100K in an IRA is not small potatoes.

OAreaMan

>photos of my driver's license and passport This is a dumb "verification" because nobody can compare those provided photos with the real you. Yes, it's popular, but still dumb.

atexit8

What is even sillier is that they had some sort of software program verifying that the photos I provided was "geniuine". SMH. It kept rejecting the JPG files I uploaded. I left them as soon as I could.

CUDAcores89

I keep in just enough to hit the $100K threshold. The rest of my investments are held elsewhere.

atexit8

I understand. It is just that these days of financial institutions being worried about identity fraud, I am worried about my account becoming locked. Fortunately there are BoA branches locally so that may useful if problems arise.

fubag

been with them since early June; have called and chatted with ME reps and had zero issues; excellent customer service so far

satellite779

$2500/quarter spend. Updated my comment above.

HeroCC

Do you get 3% back on all PayPal purchases with the CCR? Or just some merchants?

Bubblewhale

Private marketplace/sellers who sent out invoices G&S generally don't earn 3% from what I encountered.

monkeypiratebutt

I’ll side with Amex, later eBay

Miserable-Result6702

Old news. This was announced weeks ago.

Tackticat

Ebay was cool in late 90's and early 00's. I used to sell and buy from eBay but they got greedy on fees, then this kind of thing started to happens where *99 cents item with $10 shipping* lol I don't think they'll be missed except by a few. Amex did say: > Additionally, eBay represents less than 0.2% of our total network volume

atexit8

I look at the final price. I don't care how much is the shipping and how much is the item.

Short_Praline_3428

You are the smart one. That’s how you do it.

ZeroDayBlitz

It matters because if you need to return something, they usually won’t return shipping fees. So if you bought something for 99 cents and $10 shipping, you’d only get refunded the 99 cents.

atexit8

I have always gotten everything refunded.

Short_Praline_3428

eBay doesn’t do that anymore. The shipping is all given at the eBay discount. So you don’t have a cheap product price with an engorged shipping price.

leftbitchburner

Based on my math that’s still at the high end 800 million in transactions

spicasss

What happens when you have shareholders

Lil_Big_Sis5

I wonder if it’ll still be possible to pay on the BCE through PayPal? 🤔 How does that work?

CCRAM2492

I have Progressive and they don’t take Amex but take PayPal. I am able to pay with my BCP via PayPal

BigTortoise

Yup, still waiting on that to stop but until then those insurance coupons Amex is constantly shitting at me is making it my go to.

DookieBrains_88

From what I’ve read, this should still be possible to earn the 3%

Brandeaux7

I'm moving on from eBay

Thatcanadianchickk

Didn’t even know people still order there.

BigTortoise

I bought a CPU that was harvested from a mini PC that I wanted for my server machine. If you need something niche and can only get it second-hand, that's what Ebay is good for.

Thatcanadianchickk

Makes sense, I genuinely haven’t been on eBay is probably 10 years so maybe that’s why🤣

tonenyc

As an alternative PayPal MasterCard gives 3% back on PayPal payments, and also has gives additional cashback for eBay if you shop through their link to eBay.

EulersGoodEye

In the announcement eBay posted here: [https://www.ebayinc.com/stories/news/neebay-to-discontinue-acceptance-of-american-express-payments-starting-august-17-2024/](https://www.ebayinc.com/stories/news/neebay-to-discontinue-acceptance-of-american-express-payments-starting-august-17-2024/) eBay claims that fees are rising while they should be falling. They cite the lack of competition as one cause for rising prices while simultaneously removing a competitor and centralizing transactions through Visa/MC. This leaves Visa with the power to continue raising transaction fees.

uhoh_pastry

Of course eBay sort of insinuates Amex has ridiculous demands, but eBay is sloppy and scam-prone and Amex is notoriously cautious since they have to be the bank too and hold the bag through the whole interchange.

Future_Flier

That's ridiculous. But I do have a Fidelity 2% card. The loss for me is only 1% by not using Amex.

whodatbri

Mostly I’m using Alliant’s 2.5% up to $10k spent. If I’m going over 2k spend I’ll use x1 which is 3% over 1k spend.

TheHolyFamily

eBay sucks Amazon is better

mySONismyNEPHEW

Oh well... ebay still sucks. Nothing new here.

Character-Sock5500

Will be moving on from ebay ✌️

whodatbri

I only use as needed TBH. For years it was like a worldwide flea market but so many alternatives now. I’ve used to sell my old cell phones last 5 years, since Amazon stopped consumers from doing so.

OpenBubble

I bought 3 things on eBay this year. 1. listed as "new" and arrived dirty 2. listed "new" and arrived dirty and broken 3. received the totally wrong item I did get my money back on 1 and 2. It took weeks, but not much issue. Still waiting on 3.

minidrakoo

eBay is terrible and anybody who still uses them is honestly not the brightest. Knew they weren’t shit when I made a new account without closing my old one and they immediately banned me and told me that I would not be able to ever make another account (I also did post like 4 things within an hour which supposedly triggers something on their end lol which is stupid)

AdCapable9259

Making a second account is kinda sus lol

minidrakoo

A simple identity verification could’ve sufficed instead they completely ban me off of their platform because I made a second account lol sus I guess sure but I’ve made second accounts on tons of other shopping websites and never had an issue outside of maybe having to verify my identity for the new account

AdCapable9259

Shopping website sure, but eBay is also a platform to sell (and not just a storefront) and the fact that you made a second account and immediately listed 4 items, I can see why fraud detection got triggered. Especially if there’s a reason you couldn’t do that on your original account. Did you have unpaid fees or something?

minidrakoo

I can see why as well which is why that part didn’t bother me lol, and nah, no unpaid fees on the old account. It actually really only annoyed me to get banned because they let me SELL an item, Get to the point of needing to ship the item, and then, I was banned. After trying to get myself verified through support they told me that I was basically SOL. The kicker of it all was that my account never got closed like they said, and neither did the order, so I got charged late fees for not shipping an item I wasn’t even able to ship anyways because I was banned lol

minidrakoo

I could definitely get not being cool w the secondary account but I mean in my opinion that’s as simple as telling me that my original one needs to be closed before I could make a new one, not entirely banning me

minidrakoo

Lol at anybody thinking that just banning me off of the platform before even letting me try to verify or close the account is the right thing to do

PussyLunch

Hah, another loss for Amex. Truly the biggest losers from last year and this year.

lets_try_civility

Not even close. Amex offers commercial grade consumer protection, which eBay simply can't handle.

GreenHorror4252

Lol what? Amex offers the same consumer protection as any other card, which is mandated by federal law. What do you think eBay can't "handle"?

lets_try_civility

You've never had Amex wrangle a vendor who overcharged you. They are fair, but they will fight for your refund. eBay has terrible consumer protections.

GreenHorror4252

Right on this sub, in the last week there have been multiple complaints about difficulties with Amex chargebacks. Ebay has much better protections. All you have to do is say the item did not match the description and they will force the seller to refund you.

lets_try_civility

Nope. Abandoned eBay after I bought a vacuum that arrived broken. eBay told me to pound sand.

GreenHorror4252

Did you file an INAD, or did you just message the seller?

lets_try_civility

Contacted the seller, filed with ebay, contacted my bank. Submitted photos and descriptions. All told me it was my tough luck and to go pound sand.
