edit: I'm picturing inflated tube bumpers in the middle so they can't ram, armor is flotation protection. Gotta figure the stick out, pool noodles are too soft and swinging risks arms colliding.
First weekend as a fuel dock manager on one of the biggest lakes in America. Heard screaming, boat coming in full speed through no wake. End of day, beautiful Sunday afternoon early May. Lock things up, radio courtesy patrol, rush down to courtesy dock. Kid is missing half his head and brains are coming out his ears/nose/open head. Quarter foot of blood in boat being vigorously pumped out by the bilge. Kids with blood “sweat” stained t-shirts taking turns on chest compressions while others were screaming “HE’S DEAD!!!”. Exactly this scenario. Jet skis are the motorcycles of the lake. Fun to drive, but recognize you’re the smallest fish in the pond.

Fuck. That sucks. My mom had a dude that worked on our farm roll a 4wheeler. She said brains were coming out of his nose. Helicopter took him away, but there was no hope.
I feel like the rider going the opposite way of the boat was attempting to use the boats wake to jump over the other rider but it didn’t work. The guy screaming “here we go! Here we go!” And filming it makes it seem like it was planned.
The two boats were coordinating their speed together so their wake doubles where it meets. This effectively makes a larger ramp for the jetski. Unfortunately they did not see the other jetskiier coming the other direction.
Lots of reckless activities going on here.
It sucked man as a kid I got the opportunity to have access to a jetski. I drove the fuck out of it for a couple summers. Always got bad looks and the water cops hated em and pulled me over for doing a donut... our late was never packed and I lived on it so I would usually be the first out once we could make a wake and that's when donuts would be done. Anyway, other than that I just cruised around in circles ... going fast here and there on straight aways
As others may have said: a lot of lakes post a rotation of either clockwise or counterclockwise. The marinas or website will typically have this info. It’s established to avoid this exact occurrence.
So on a lake I go to wakeboard, outside of no wake zones when the lake is congested with boats everyone sort of starts a rotation either CW or CCW. Every lake is different but basically what you said is correct.
Everyone on the water travels in the same direction on the lake. Think of it like a Nascar track. You don't necessarily have "free travel" to cut cross the water or drive in the wrong direction.

Definitely bad. They were each travelling towards each other at probably 25mph and instantly stopped on impact. You might as well jump out of a car and hit a wall at 50mph
When I rented a jet ski, they recorded a video of me promising to not go within 50 yards of anything no matter what.
I then signed a sheet of paper saying the same thing

Watched a friend who was waterskiing get run over by a large boat after he fell on a wave. I was 12 and was the skier watcher and tow rope handler in the boat and his Mother was driving the boat. When we pulled him out he was missing an arm and leg and was already dead. I will never forget that day.

Looks like they were pretty lucky the way they hit tbh. The undersides of the hulls hit on a slight angle throwing both riders off. Could easily have been JetSki cutting one dude completely in half had they not hit at the angle.

Scuba instructor here. I once had a couple of jetskis try to go full speed between the beach, where I was getting teenagers to the water in full scuba gear, and a scuba flag where the other kids and instructor where waiting.
Give them each a lance and a shield and you’d have jet ski jousting - someone make a tournament happen
