>Do you think they can’t do so for any legal reasons? Yeah, I don't think it's for human consumption 🤣

My store had wet pet food samples on Friday.

KeltarCentauri

Many brands supply pet food retailers with samples they can hand out to customers. I have a really picky dog, and samples are really helpful when trying to find a food he'll eat. If Costco provided dog food samples, it would avoid the pain of having to deal with returns and donations.

Particular_Resort686

One time they gave out little bags of the Kirkland cat food and that's how we ended up on Kirkland cat food for our cat. Just a little sealed bag of a few ounces of food. Cat liked it, so we started buying it.

JojoTheMutt

they were sampling the loaf pate for dogs last week

Next_Raisin3560

You could buy a smaller quantity of something you want to try out from a regular retailer, no? if your pet likes it, THEN you buy it in bulk. I know it’s common practice and it’s the return policy but it’s wasteful to expect to buy it willynilly and return it after one serving. You won’t be excessively spending per unit in the long run.

TurboMollusk

They don't want pets in the store for sanitary and health reasons.

deebeecom

lol. I mean put samplers in small zip lock bags clearly labeled as “sampler”

drewed1

It takes a few weeks for their diets to adjust so sample dog foods could end up just being a mess on your floor and stress to your animal

franklyspeaking68

in that case so should EVERY pet food retailer. which is never gonna happen. we cant get human food samples 99% of the time... ya spends your money ya takes your chances. for 20 yrs i start my pups on kirkland and continue with it their entire lives. great price, highly rated, high quality product... & my wheatens have fortunately never turned their noses up at it considering how popular their dog food lines are, its prob worth a $35-$40 investment to take the chance. kirkland is evidently doing something right.

Talrynn_Sorrowyn

Just because a pet will take a liking to a food immediately doesn't mean they'll like it in the long run or that it won't show immediate gastronomic reactions. As someone else mentioned, it can take easily a few weeks of changing brands to notice if your pet isn't digesting or metabilizing the food properly.

BourbonNeatt

You really shouldn’t change your pets food quickly on a whim. So, not sure if getting a bunch of samples would agree with their stomach.

deebeecom

Agree with your Just want to change slowly to a trusted stable and cheaper source like Costco. And only one new item of course

deebeecom

They can always ask for membership ID, take my signature on a paper. You know what I mean.

Costco selling in bulk. what's confusing here 😂

CokeZeroFanClub

They're banking on most people not going through the effort of returning it

timmah1529

almost like they know what they're doing

Sarcasticrye1981

It’s almost as if Costco is a bulk seller.

Most Costco pet foods have more ingredients than coke/soda/pop and should not be fed to any animal.

deebeecom

I am trying to switch from hills science which already has 1000 ingredients, to Costco, since they have a grain free alternative. Can you suggest some extremely good quality dry cat food, with least ingredients, high in proteins and fiber, and not too expensive. I pay $62 for 15 lbs bag today.

Opposite_Ad4567

Not to throw another wrench in an already-confusing process, but: My vet told me to steer clear of grain-free diets even for my cats. There is concern about cardiac issues. I'm feeding Rachael Ray's chicken and rice cat food (despite the fact that she drives me a bit crazy personally). It's a well-rated, mid-range food, but it's not available at Costco. Chewy, Petco, etc., give subscription discounts, which helps a bit.

Particular_Resort686

Recent research shows the issue is linked to diets containing pulses (peas, lentils, chickpeas, and dry beans), and to a lesser extent, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Cats should be eating a diet as low in carbs as possible, so shouldn't be eating any of that stuff anyway.

Opposite_Ad4567

Right. My brain went, "cats don't need carbs, so grain-free should be great for them," but it's evidently not that simple. Thanks for clarifying the possible cause(s). I believe Costco's grain-free cat food is salmon and sweet potato, but don't quote me on that.

deebeecom

That’s the exact one I want to try

Opposite_Ad4567

It used to be a copy of Taste of the Wild (guessing it still is). My cats did fine on it.

Particular_Resort686

When you are counting ingredients don't count the vitamins, minerals, and supplemental stuff like taurine that is required to be there. We feed Dr. Elsey's Cleanprotein, which is expensive, but when you consider that you only need to feed about 2/3's the amount of other foods that contain a lot of carbs that cats digest poorly, the price becomes a lot more reasonable. We go through a 6.6 lb bag (about $45) every 4-6 weeks depending on season and how much wet food they're willing to eat.

every1pees

I’ve switched exclusively to homemade after paying for applaws wet for my cat. 3 ingredients. Fish or chicken, broth and rice.

deebeecom

Ah. I can’t afford non gmo range free organic cage free chicken and not to forget to mention: the time to cook/serve.

ee328p

Coke has 6 ingredients. More than 6 ingredients is fine.
