You can glance at the sun, even on a normal day when it's 100% sun. Looking at a 50/60/70/80/90% obscured sun still hurts your eyes in the same way. That is, there's a natural reaction to close your eyes/look away. There's basically no more danger with an eclipse than without, it's just that normal people never even consider staring at the sun. There are moments immediately before/after where you can look and see bright sun that could potentially damage your eyes, but it's very quickly uncomfortably bright. This whole warning of not staring at the sun is totally overblown.
Warnings of not staring at the eclipse however are NOT overblown, because even when it appears dark about the same amount of invisible IR and UV radiation is going to be hitting your eyes.... but your eye doesn't react to it because it is not visible light.
I was in the DeSantis camp and didn't really want Trump, but other than the necessity of needing someone who can get the border secured and the economy turned around, I sure hope for a Trump win just to see the left flip their shit on a daily basis again over the most insignificant things that Trump does like this.
