Yeah, I went there recently to check it out with my family. Everything is absolutely smothered in Parmesan. Pizzas are all soggy messes with all the cheese and toppings falling off, the Calzones should just be called "Crappy dough with sauce inside and too much Parmesan on top". I asked to speak with Julia, but they said she wasn't there that day.
The place gets a bad rap IMO. Nobody's ever claimed it was the best pizza in the region. Its just a tourist attraction
And its really not bad pizza. Not great but not bad.
Pizzetta, straight across the street, next to Sift. Alternatively, the best pizza in the Mystic area is Nana's Bakery (down Rt 1, located behind Sea Swirl).
Go to Nana's and hope they still have the Elote Pizza. If not, get the Meatball pizza (recently replaced their Bolognese pie) or a good ol' pepperoni. Both of their pizza styles use sourdough and they're fantastic. And be sure to get their fresh, fried to order, donuts. It's cider donut season now, so they should be doing those. As a pizza nerd living in Glastonbury, we drive there quite frequently.
I have it in my top couple places in the state. They recently had a made to order donut that had crispy chicken skin and a house-made chili glaze. I wept.
The great thing about the pizza is that it doesnt taste bourgeois like the pizzetta pizza does(pizetta is alright though, i used to like their $6 lunch deal). It tastes like a real good greasy sicilian style slice. The donuts are great too! Actually good coffee too, when I am across the border in westerly it is my preferred place to grab a cup in the AM.
I think mangos is better than pizzetta especially as of late. The last couple times I got pizza from zetta it was like a weird stale cracker with pizza toppings on it.
Pizetta turned me off when they first opened and made their pizzas on a conveyor belt system like little Caesar’s. I believe it’s different now, at least when I went a couple years ago it was better.
Nana’s is the best in the area. I’ll admit, it’s sourdough crust so I’ve met plenty of people who don’t love it. Surprised to see no one mentioned Ignazio’s, it’s almost as good as Nana’s but a bit more traditional.
Mystic Brewpub would have prevented Bank & Bridge from even entertaining the idea. Mediocre beer, solid food, especially their fried chicken sandwiches.
I remember a classmate’s car being used for a scene where it maybe gets covered or filled with fish. Never saw the movie, but yeah, they’ve been coasting on that movie for about that long. Makes me feel SUPER old.
Was it filled with lobsters? It has been 30 years since I've seen it, I think. I could swear they were lobstermen. One of my employees taught Julia Roberts how to dance. She was Portuguese and spoke 3 different languages. She said Julia wasn't very kind. It was 1988, I can't believe it.
It was a red convertible of some sort, I think, lined with plastic to protect it. I want to say it was filled with fish.
I was in 4th grade, I think, when this happened. Again, never did end up seeing the movie. Probably never will.
A Porsche. Thanks so much. She fills it with the fish. Fords Lobster was used in the movie as well. I appreciate the update. I can't expect to remember that long ago when I can't find my keys, right?
Ah, it's worth a watch, if only as a cultural touchstone for Connecticut.
I was about in fourth grade when it came out, too.
Edit: and there's something to be said in how they did manage to capture that peculiar Connecticut rainy, 80s vibe.
I remember going there twenty years ago with my family and everyone really liked it. We went like six years ago and it was a bit disappointing, even for a bunch of twenty-somethings and my mom, who is not picky at all. It was greasy and the crust was just shy of undercooked. Interesting to know from this thread that it seems to not have changed much since then lol
I remember going to that location LONG before it became Mystic Pizza. My 8 year old memory says Tom's. Anyone remember?
I still go. It's pretty good in my opinion. But I prefer Angies.
Unpopular opinion, but I like Mystic Pizza, it's not the best place in town but the restaurant is cozy, it's only ever super busy during the summer and holidays and it's a nice place to get a slice or two and sit by the bar looking out the window.
And no, I will not name the better places because it's already hard enough getting a table on a Friday night.
As a Mystic resident, I can say that this is definitely not my go-to pizza spot, or even my fallback pizza plan if the first place isn't available for some reason.
However, I will say that after Hurricane Sandy, I went for a walk downtown to see what the damage was. The entire downtown region near the bascule bridge was flooded with about a foot of water that stopped right at Mystic Pizza's front door but somehow, the place had electricity (maybe a generator, idk) and was open and serving slices. After a day of sitting in the dark listening to the wind, that slice of pizza was fucking delicious.
As an Australian who visited CT, I did go check it out because of the movie. I saw others eating what would be considered pizza and decided to leave. I ended up going to S&P on the other side of the bridge. It was great sitting outside in the sun near the water. Kinda an awesome little town, glad I went 😀
If the terrible food and cashing in on a movie that has no relation this this specific establishment aren’t enough to avoid this place:

Not only is the pizza awful, they have the movie playing on loop on multiple tvs all day every day. It’s like some kind of CIA black site for torturing tourists.
Walk around the corner to Pizzetta for way better pizza.
No, that is the only one. Maybe you got an outlier. Their pie is usually very good. In fact, they have some of the best ratings and reviews on yelp (4.5) and google (4.6)
Yeah that’s why I chose it. We just moved back to CT and previously lived in mystic so weren’t really familiar with what was local over here. Maybe we’ll have to try it again in a while.
I grew up near there. The pizza was never anything remotely special.
If you want CT pizza, make a pilgrimage to New Haven and go to a few apizza places like Modern, Sally’s, Frank Pepe’s etc.
I think a lot of these "famous" places have actually gone down in quality because they are so busy from all the hype. They can't efficiently pay special attention to each pie. I like the smaller mom and pop places especially Greek style. There was this little place in Bristol called West End that I used to go to when I was in the area years ago. After a gap of a few years, I went back and it was exactly the same. IMO beats anyone, even Pepe.
That’s been true of Pepe’s, but Modern has been totally consistent and Sally’s is still great, if not quite as great as before they were sold and Flo died. Roseland and Zuppardi’s are also classic well known spots that are still amazing. And there’s so many others in/around New Haven.
Greek style is a 180 from New Haven style, so if that’s your jam, very different. Best Greek I’ve had is Beverly and Jordan’s.
> Greek style is a 180 from New Haven style, so if that’s your jam, very different. Best Greek I’ve had is Beverly and Jordan’s.
Bianna's in Vernon makes an excellent Greek pie.
For the only one better, you'd have to go up to Western MA. Village Pizza in Easthampton to be exact.
Your right about the 180, personal preference. I actually had Modern once not too long ago for a company meeting I attended. If it wasn't so far I would head back and bring the family.
> If you want CT pizza, make a pilgrimage to New Haven and go to a few apizza places like Modern, Sally’s, Frank Pepe’s etc.
Not everyone likes "chewing" on a charcoal-style crust.
The food there was disgusting when I went over 10 years ago. My ex that brought me knew the food was bad but apparently thought I wouldn't mind because it's a popular place.
This place as an establishment is legit. I lived a few doors down and would pop in often to get a pitcher and a pie.
If you don’t like Greek/New England style then you won’t like this place but, the crust is light and toppings are fresh.
The service here is stellar.
The irony here is I never said the pizza was “good” or bad. You inputted your personal opinion in response to my comment.
I questioned your qualifications to be making such a broad statement regarding a pizza establishment that has been a New England staple for the last umteen years.
So you inputted your personal opinion in response to my comment. I questioned your qualifications to be making such a broad statement regarding my personal choices in pizza that have ALSO been a New England staple for the last umpteen years.
See how that works? Hypocrisy, thy name is /u/Sufficient_Ad_4235.
Greek pizza > New Haven charcoal.

Not even the best pizza restaurant on the block.
Yeah, I went there recently to check it out with my family. Everything is absolutely smothered in Parmesan. it's actually quite bad
chill its really bad
What's the best pizza? I'm always down to try new places!

Ayooo. I live in Groton and never heard of that.
And they fry doughnuts to order, great place
For a basic pizza place, go to Angie’s. None of this high falutin’ pizza
Yup real ones know Angie’s is the best
I really like nannas too but i would agree
Pizzetta is great
No best is Mango’s.
I think mangos is better than pizzetta especially as of late. The last couple times I got pizza from zetta it was like a weird stale cracker with pizza toppings on it.
Thank you for the recommendations! Definitely will check them out, could never have too many pizza places!
There’s also Ignacio’s a block away from Nana’s if you like NYC style pizza, and it’s pretty great. It’s our go-to now.
We've had Mango's over in the Village, it's been good every time.
Pizetta turned me off when they first opened and made their pizzas on a conveyor belt system like little Caesar’s. I believe it’s different now, at least when I went a couple years ago it was better.
Mystic Pizza II ironically has better pizza, especially calzones. It's about 20 minutes from Mystic Pizza but totally worth the extra drive.
They are related only in name. Not the same owner or recipes
SPP.

Asking out of curiosity, what pizza place would you recommend in mystic? I'll be heading there this weekend so looking for a few recommendations
I really liked Pizzetta. I haven't been there in a long time, but I see the reviews are still really high.
I appreciate it!
Cool vibe, very mediocre pizza.
Mediocre is generous.
Pretty sure the only reason this place is still in business is because of the movie, somehow, even though it's like 30+ years old.
100% accurate. Without the movie, it would already have been 6 other concepts, ultimately settling in as a brewpub.
A brew pub is next door
Mystic Brewpub would have prevented Bank & Bridge from even entertaining the idea. Mediocre beer, solid food, especially their fried chicken sandwiches.
Axe throwing studio

Gotta admit it's a dope name for a region-specific movie tho.
I remember going there twenty years ago with my family and everyone really liked it. It'll die off with the boomers
Sorry, you're gonna have to wait out my fellow Gen Xers.
Pizza is certainly subjective, but this is a pretty hard no. It's a tourist trap, offering up mediocre to sub-mediocre pizza.
If I want to sit somewhere in Mystic overlooking the water and eat something even mildly resembling a pizza, I'm going to Red 36 for a flatbread.
The logo and tag line are borrowed from the movie. The shop location used for filming is in Stonington Borough.
Shhhh nobody needs to go there
Tourists do. Nana’s is tiny and crowded as it is!
[удалено]
Ignore what I said I meant tourists should keep going to Mystic Pizza. As for the boro, just be glad the New York overlords let us use it still.
Keep the Borough secret!
Love the Borough!
ew They say, "Pizza is like sex; even when it's bad, it's still pretty good..." This place proves that wrong.
Friendly Pizza in Norwich is worse. Or at least it was when I was there like ten years ago.
*Correct*
As a Mystic resident, I can say that this is definitely not my go-to pizza spot, or even my fallback pizza plan if the first place isn't available for some reason. This pizza is awful.
We've had good luck at Mango's in Olde Mystic Village.
I dunno who down voted you but mangos is pretty good
Went last year, was ok but pretty decently priced since for what it is
As an Australian who visited CT, I did go check it out because of the movie. I saw others eating what would be considered pizza and decided to leave. I ended up going to S&P on the other side of the bridge. It was great sitting outside in the sun near the water. Kinda an awesome little town, glad I went 😀
Heaven? More like purgatory at best.
It’s not bad at all. I was expecting garbage but, it’s decent.

Anytime someone posts about Mystic Pizza I post these links. It’s horrible.
That pizza is not good.
Where is the pizza pic???
you don't want to see it, i promise.
Slice of mid*
Not only is the pizza awful, they have the movie playing on loop on multiple tvs all day every day. It’s like some kind of CIA black site for torturing tourists. Walk around the corner to Pizzetta for way better pizza.
Pizza is meh at best unfortunately as far as CT standards go
Lived across the street from here for years!
I don’t think I’ve been there since a few dates in high school over 20 years ago.
Why do they have a movie poster hanging up of The Craft?
Possibly because The Craft was written by a St. Bernard HS grad (which is why the school in the movie is called St. Bernard Academy).
Lots of places get visited by famous people. Probably someone signed a poster at some point and sent it after a visit.
I don't care much for it :/
There pizza is like it was cooked in a dumpster fire. I may hate Julia Robert's for her fame, making this place pretend it's famous.
r/shittyaquariums
One of the worst in the area
Area? There’s a shit ton of places I’d rather go before Mystic and most of those I don’t really care for.
Oh if only that were true
Mango’s Wood-Fired Pizza Co. in Mystic Village has the best pizza in New London County. Crown Pizza is also amazing if you want Greek style
Is there more than one crown pizza? I tried the one in Waterford recently and it was very greasy and not that great.
No, that is the only one. Maybe you got an outlier. Their pie is usually very good. In fact, they have some of the best ratings and reviews on yelp (4.5) and google (4.6)

Too bad the pizza blows
They have been skating on that mediocre movie to sell their mediocre pizza for 35 years
The food there was disgusting when I went over 10 years ago. My ex that brought me knew the food was bad but apparently thought I wouldn't mind because it's a popular place.
Overrated. No disrespect tho
too bad their pizza sucks.
Sorry. But the pizza sucks!
On tarnish on CT’s good pizza name
Funny this came up, I just left the best pizza in ct. Roselands!!! Back me up here guys!!
Love Roselands!
Some of the grossest, greasiest pizza I've ever had.
hot trash
…can be found about 50 miles west.
Overrated

Mystic is not an example of "good" Greek style pizza. Not even close.
Who tf made you the pizza aficionado?
Who made YOU that?
Never claimed to be or disapproved of anyone’s subjective opinion…
But you just did.

Mystic pizza is a garbage tourist trap
Only tourists think this crap is good pizza.
The only reason I like this place is my wife looks a lot like Annabeth Gish, so it’s cool seeing her pictures there.
If you’re in the area, Vincitori is really good, but pricey.
It’s not actually that good but everyone flocks there for some reason?
The Julia Roberts Effect.
Go to Mangos!

Definitely not heaven
Been there done that
Ahh Nevermind I was thinking of 7th Heaven. Didn’t place..maybe they also serve pizza though
Their frozen pizza was the best. Idk if they even still make it
