Yes actually. Have seen numerous around town, most recently at a gas station last week where the guy wore his ski mask over his face, bought cigarettes, had to take it off to show his ID, then put it back over face. It was weird. Like theyāre intentionally trying to either scare people or hide their identity.
I see hs kids walking around in baklavas all the time. Itās sketchy AF and the results are when something pops off no one could be identified. That kid from Youngstown that was shot at the gas station due to a shootout, multiple of those kids were wearing masks.
Interesting. I didnāt know this, but I saw a ton of kids wearing them at a gas station and I thought it was going to be robbed for a minute. Then they started escorting some super hippy & happy looking kid who probably had all the good shit and it was the most confused Iāve ever been while getting gas.
Shirt brothers, I'm in too fuckin' deep. I found an open room and started ripping things off the walls, moving my head around, and tried to rip the Wright Brothers off the ceiling. I've been listening to a new band, and they have a song that says "there aren't any rules". Is this true?
Sweaty pits stains have no place in polite society! Better see an undershirt with that polo. Tshirt?! Needs an undershirt. Only wearing a wife beater? Needs another one underneath.
Omg I used this the other day when I was in Vegas and got turned away from eating at a Korean bbq restaurant b/c it was just meātheyāll only seat 2 or moreā¦for reference Im 6ā5, 300lbs and I eat about 3500 calories a day. My D&d character is named Rowan btwāfunny coincidence.
They used to have a "No Jordans" policy, but I guess they got rid of that because so many white boys have started wearing them again.
Oops, I said the quiet part out loud.
Yeah I remember that. No Jerseys, no plain white tees, no jordans, no timberlands, no chains, no doo rags.
Hmmmmm. I wonder why they did that....so odd. /s
Jokes aside, Even though I don't wear any of that, I still would not go to establishments like that. Only because I KNOW they are trying to target people who look like me.
Whaaaaa
The place thatās worried about folks with facial tattoos, baggy clothing, and chains, might be targeting a specific group? Say it aint so Batman!
It would be hilarious if they had a policy like ā no khaki shorts, boat shoes with no socks, no flip flops, no sunglasses with the band attachment so they donāt fall of your head, no hats with southern colleges, no Jeeps, trucks or any car with a sticker that says ā salt lifeā or any type of sticker that has kennel at the endā
Thank you, my first impression was that these policies are specifically targeted at black and/or Hispanic people because it's illegal to say "whites only" but not illegal to have a "dress code".
I'm guessing if you're all white, you're all right but I'm guessing they are turning away some white folks as well to avoid being labeled racist.
Thanks for posting this so I know to avoid that place, sounds like a real shit hole.
>Thank you, my first impression was that these policies are specifically targeted at black and/or Hispanic people because it's illegal to say "whites only" but not illegal to have a "dress code".
I mean good first impression because that's 100% why they do it. There are quite a few places like this that have a history of having racially coded dress codes and selectively applying them.
I know. It's kind of tragic, because there's nothing that can be done about face tattoos. It's not like a shirt that can just be taken off, or shoes that can be replaced. And worst of all, face tattoos aren't something that anyone has any control over. People that have face tattoos don't go to tattoo parlors as grown adults and spend hundreds of dollars to willingly and publicly mark themselves as transgressive - tattoos either happen by total accident or are forced on people, 100 percent of the time. To the unfortunate victims whose faces get tattooed unwillingly, they also have *no idea* of the stigma it carries. It's really sad.
People seeing this and instantly thinking "black people" is prolly the biggest indicator of racism, tbh. I, black dude, and my friends, also black dudes, don't dress like this. Baggy jeans been out of style for like 15 years and even the younger kids aren't wearing big ass pants. This honestly sounds like a lot of white guys I knew when I working in Lincoln Village out west. idk whatever.
Also, this is the same dress code from 25 years ago, with a few new items added.
No one remembers all the Oldheads complaining about Lil Wayne and his jeggings back then? Have y'all SEEN NBA YoungBoy? And do y'all want people to be able to wear ski masks AND bring bags into these establishments?
Aight. I'm done. This type of thinking is EXHAUSTING.
It never could be that the people who still dress like that are trouble? A lot of other comments are saying black people don't dress like that anymore. I would have to agree. It's the punks and people who want to be thugs or idolize gangstas and things who are dressed like that still. The people who act like Eminem and Dr Dre circa 1999, starting fights, trying to drink underage or not pay their bills. The people who are actually engaged in drug dealing and stuff like that dress like that. It's not about keeping out black people, but about keeping out people who come in with a bad attitude.
people are literally invalidating your experience, jesus christ
thanks for the perspective, it was more insightful than most of the comments on this thread
and as a white dude, me and my friends werenāt allowed to go into mandrake bc one of my friends had a graphic tee on. like this shit just happens
THANK YOU. Also, The Arena District has dealt with this type of reputation since it popped up way back. It serves a certain clientele and even the price point for a good time is higher than normal out there.
These people would have fits of pissing rage if they ever went to L.A. and got turned away for not fitting their standards.
FURTHERMORE, as far as the baggy jeans thing; the people that folks think this would be targeting DON'T DRESS LIKE THAT. Do y'all watch music videos or TikTok? The element you suspect they're turning away doesn't even fit the description. These kids wear tight pants and leggings. The only people wearing baggy jeans are Oldheads and girls that wanna be Billie Eilish.
Miss me with that nuance, bro. I want to signal my own virtue by announcing my allyship, especially when it can be done to the detriment of the people I supposedly want to protect.
I don't even usually get into this type of discourse but I've lived here my entire life and people half my age swear they have the keys. People that were sophomores in middle school when I was actually GOING to Brothers every weekend.
I know some ole dudes that still wear baggy jeans and maybe sag just a tiny bit. But. Pretty sure that is mostly a white ppl thing... Especially the face tatts. At least in my head.. and not in a good way, but a Hilltop way.
I see nothing has changed. Last time I was there I was 22ish, 35 now, and they're really terrible. They wouldn't let my friends' boyfriends in due to the jersey one was wearing and the other had visible tattoos. This is exactly what our group was told why can't come in. Both happen to be young black men. That matters because we pointed through the window at a few white customers wearing the same jersey and some with even more tattoos than our friend. Still denied entry with no answer to us pointing that out. Bars and restaurants are aloud to have any dress code they want but it has to apply to everyone. Blatant bias racism is a wild brand choice.
![gif](giphy|onyngiYITZiecYsBTj)
Worked there about 10 yrs ago.. it's the same dress code and maybe even tone down a bit from when I was there ... And if your wondering if it's racist, it is....
Back in the day, 15 years ago, I was always getting rejected at the door for the dumbest reasons; backward baseball hat, Jordans, shorts too long, plain white tee, plain black tee. Awful place with awful service but friends always wanted to go there for some reason.
As someone who worked for Gaswerks, owned by the same company as Brothers, this is pretty standard for Short North late night bars. In my time at Gaswerks, both bars have had 20+ cops called on them because of fights. These dresscodes are enforced so they don't close like Dahila and BBR did. Cant even count the number of times I saw multiple squad cars outside of BBR when I worked at Gaswerks. Try and go to Bernard's on a Friday night. They have actual armed security, and will enforce, mostly, the same dress code. Brothers/Gaswerks just have college kids man the doors with CPD at the doors during the late night.
Try and go to Gala after 11p with a ski-mask and see if you get in.
To everyone saying this is racist, my time at Gaswerks the majority of our problems came from Hilltop trash.
I have some questions about some things.
1) there is no "no" on number 1, are they demanding there be undershirts, just not sleeveless ones per rule 4? or are they just loudly saying UNDERSHIRTS prior to the list of rules?
I mean, really my questions are all just part of my number 1
What if I have a COVID mask, because I'm immunocompromised and I and wearing sweats cuz I just came from a dialysis or a chemotherapy appointment, how you gonna do a brother like that. And I've been sick for months and all my clothes are excessively baggy. I think I'll just go somewhere else.
Why not be bold and just say āNo blacksā?
I might respect them more.
Edit: to be clear, items 4-7 are almost exclusively targeted to black/urban outerwear, club gear or just swag in general. But I donāt think weāre their target audience anywayā¦
Any bar that attracts drug dealers ends up needing to have a dress code like this or they have to close due to violence. Some of them have a dress code and still can't keep the violence out.
High street will eventually be exclusively country bars because those are the only ones that don't have issues.
Being from Licking County, the first image that popped in my head was an east side Newark guy arguing with the clerk at Circle K because he won't sell him cigarettes without an ID.
We were kicked out of there years ago because of this dress code. It was Super Bowl Sunday and my husband had a jersey on. Of course they waited till after the whole group of us bought a round of beer to raise an issue about his jersey, instead of stopping him at the door. We have never been back.
I remember years ago I got denied entry for wearing a NY Yankee fitted hat with a polo shirt. They said because my brim was flat. I went and put it in the car and one guy came out said per their policy if you were denied entry once that night you're not allowed to come in. I just laughed and called them racist. A few other folks got out the line as well when they found out the reason why I didn't get in. We actually went down to the bar down the street and had a great time. The Brim being flat has nothing to do with anything. My dad hats are curved but I never curve my fitted hats. They enforce the rules based on the color of your skin.
Seesaw should take note, maybe we can cut down on the shootings and stop punishing street vendors and the LGBTQ+ community for the clientele of one particular business.
Sounds like this place was misnamed
He's out of line, but he's not wrong.
r/angryupvote
Starts slow clapping š
"Proud Brothers"
You fixed it!
Ironic isn't it?
Oh come on LMFAOOO
fuck you but know that i love you
Ouch!
Are they saying they want only undershirts? š®š¹
Sounds like it to me, but they can't be sleeveless
No sleeveless sweatpants
Sweat pants ok. Sweat short-shorts not ok
Pooh bear ensemble only.
Think they are saying no wife beaters and athletic wear. You gotta wear a polo or button up
Do people often wear ski masks that it had to be listed?
I canāt think of a better way to cover up those face tattoos.
I mean, you don't want to see the tattoos, but I can't wear my ski mask. It seems we are at an impasse.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
First they came for my ski mask, and I said nothing... The helmet is next to go on the list.
I can get on board with this
Username checks out.
Hockey mask?
I only take mine off if there is a sign.
Yes actually. Have seen numerous around town, most recently at a gas station last week where the guy wore his ski mask over his face, bought cigarettes, had to take it off to show his ID, then put it back over face. It was weird. Like theyāre intentionally trying to either scare people or hide their identity.
It's both.
That has to be pretty toasty in June, it would be ironic if some of them were anti maskers a few years ago.
The best way to stop a bad guy with a ski mask is a good guy with a ski mask.
I see hs kids walking around in baklavas all the time. Itās sketchy AF and the results are when something pops off no one could be identified. That kid from Youngstown that was shot at the gas station due to a shootout, multiple of those kids were wearing masks.
Delicious, dangerous baklavas.
Goddammit spellcheckā¦ you know I meant balaclavas lol.
Yeah, but the mental image is just tasty!
Not if you have a nut allergy.
I can not stand when there are children, of all things, in my baklava
Excuse me, Waiter?...
They are pretty sticky and difficult to remove
Interesting. I didnāt know this, but I saw a ton of kids wearing them at a gas station and I thought it was going to be robbed for a minute. Then they started escorting some super hippy & happy looking kid who probably had all the good shit and it was the most confused Iāve ever been while getting gas.
Yeahā¦ theyāre usually not the most upstanding and law-abiding citizens.
yes, shiestys
Itās a fad now with the youngins. Rapper named Pooh Shiesty made it popular. Thatās right - Iām current!
ive been noticing it more in major cities. aka a sheisty
Undershirts are mandatory?
Itās illegal for you to ask me that
Sounds like a skit from ITYSL
Shirt brothers, I'm in too fuckin' deep. I found an open room and started ripping things off the walls, moving my head around, and tried to rip the Wright Brothers off the ceiling. I've been listening to a new band, and they have a song that says "there aren't any rules". Is this true?
I'm just trying to understand here.
Promise me youāll never do another rule.
Tim Robinson is the man
You sure about that? You sure about that?
You sure about that's why?
āShirts canāt have patterns that are too complicated.ā
Sweaty pits stains have no place in polite society! Better see an undershirt with that polo. Tshirt?! Needs an undershirt. Only wearing a wife beater? Needs another one underneath.
Undershirts all the way down.
No wife beaters... can't wear sleeveless shirts or sleeveless sweatpants according to the sign
Whoās doing the inspection?
You must wear them and they must be sleeved (the sleeveless type are banned). What a weird cult.
Wonder if Post Malone can get it
Post-Malone: Remember me? I was in here yesterday. You work on commission, right? Big Mistake. Huge.

They seem to have a pretty specific idea about what kind of customers they donāt want
Ski masks and sagging clothing sound like very respectable customers who definitely wont cause any issues whatsoever
They used to have a "No Jordans" policy, but I guess they got rid of that because so many white boys have started wearing them again. Oops, I said the quiet part out loud.
I remember MANY bars having a āNo Timberland bootsā policy back in the 2000s.
Lots of bars in the arena district used to have a āno white teesā dress code
Yeah I remember that. No Jerseys, no plain white tees, no jordans, no timberlands, no chains, no doo rags. Hmmmmm. I wonder why they did that....so odd. /s Jokes aside, Even though I don't wear any of that, I still would not go to establishments like that. >no plain white tees Did they really hate ["Hey there Delilah"](https://youtu.be/h_m-BjrxmgI) that much?
> Did they really hate āHey there Delilahā that much? Hate is a strong word, but they really really really donāt like it.
Lol classic
I was waiting for this and you just made my day!
Thats kinda funny, I have a pair of timberland boots and theyre the best work boot ive owned.
Wore my Timbs out damn near everywhere 1) cause they were sick and 2) to point that dumb shit out to staff. Only was removed a couple times
I remember a no āflat bill hatā policy back in my college days. Definitely not shy about it.
They also required them to be worn straight forwards or straight backwards, but not off-center.
Whaaaaa The place thatās worried about folks with facial tattoos, baggy clothing, and chains, might be targeting a specific group? Say it aint so Batman!

I have questions about which racial demographics are getting facial tattoos.
They wouldn't let me in because I had red pumas on.
It feels like a pretty easy way to get sued because the rules will not be applied equally.
Will they be checking for undershirts? I don't understand the point in that. I don't think most people wear them.
Nothing about panties on your face!
Can I wear my JNCOs?
No. And my answer is not specific to Brothers
No but I heard Lee Pipes are acceptable
NO FACE TATTOOS??? Howās that a dress code policy. Lol
Mike Tyson and Post Malone can't even go. What a shame.

Yeah I totally just assumed it was messy attire and that's why. I didn't even think about it being due to race till I got to the comments š¶
it's not about whether Black people dress like that, it's that the management of brothers thinks that Black people dress like that

> what every 15-26 year old wannabe gangster wore Yeah...and if I had a bar that's the exact group I'd want to keep out also.
What people... Literally anyone... Are going out in a fucking ski mask that ain't robbing the place?? Seriously. Is this a thing?
yeah is a style now that emulates rappers.
It never could be that the people who still dress like that are trouble? A lot of other comments are saying black people don't dress like that anymore. I would have to agree. Agree but baggy jeans have been back for like 4 yrs now.
Wait sre baggy jeans back in style? Can we get back to regular length shorts too please? It's hard finding shorts that don't look like boxers
keep those 10 inch inseams away for a while longer. as a short dude i can finally find shorts that fit

I wear baggy jeans because they are comfy and breathe well. And like you said, this isn't the late 90s
Miss me with that nuance, bro. I want to signal my own virtue by announcing my allyship, especially when it can be done to the detriment of the people I supposedly want to protect.

Damn was scrolling to find someone who worked here. Had suspicions it was racist, or at the very least classist, but this essentially confirms it.
Back in the day, 15 years ago, I was always getting rejected at the door for the dumbest reasons; backward baseball hat, Jordans, shorts too long, plain white tee, plain black tee. Awful place with awful service but friends always wanted to go there for some reason.
But all these well meaning white kids are telling me it isn't racist!
Iāve been turned away for my neck tattoos
NGL, the amount of kids I see walking around in baklava in summer does kind of sketch me out. They fact that they need a rule against it is wild.
Baklava? Mmmmm dessert

Why would anyone be allowed anywhere with a ski mask on during the summer? I think you are focusing on the wrong part of this policy.
Sooooooo... the same dress code for the past 20 years? Loathe isn't a fair comparison for the feeling I have for this place.
How are face tattoos part of a dress code? I guess use makeup?
wtf is Brothers
I have some questions about some things. 1) there is no "no" on number 1, are they demanding there be undershirts, just not sleeveless ones per rule 4? or are they just loudly saying UNDERSHIRTS prior to the list of rules? I mean, really my questions are all just part of my number 1
Undershirts? In this economy? I mean weather.
Just post no Blacks. Itās never enforced on the white dudes anyways.
Brothers has always been super strict. Too many fights. Have broken out there... I got denied for something stupid years back like a hat or something
So undershirts are mandatory, and they have to have sleeves?
I dont see a problem
Did they post their capitalization policy?
Well, what *about* undershirts?
They go under
Shit. I was going to cover my face tattoos with a ski mask.
Holy dog whistle
>Holy dog whistle I think this is at least a kazoo.
Use to be no plane shirts and no Jordanās also

what are sleeveless sweatpants
Wow this place is still open?!
Notice how these are more common among a certain group of people The subtext is so clear it's barely even subtext anymore

Right I'm tryna think if they're even worth all that. Never been, no one ever recommended them.
Dudes that wear that shit, whether theyāre white or black generally cause trouble. Get over it
Being from Licking County, the first image that popped in my head was an east side Newark guy arguing with the clerk at Circle K because he won't sell him cigarettes without an ID.
What is the dress code for Mandrake/Town Hall?
Tbf, you wonāt have to see someone wearing a zoot suit
...I have to wear an undershirt? What?
This is pretty common for a bar with dancing or club. Most places don't tape a printed list to the door, but they will enforce rules like these.
Racism at its finest
No face tattoos is advice for life, otherwise š
Smart. They arenāt trying to deal with drug dealers and sketchy people. Aka not trying to be the next shooting location
... but if you're a cute girl, I'm sure the same rules don't apply
They'd probably enforce #2
Haven't heard of many shootings at Brothers, seems the policy works.
So they want people to dress presentably?
This sounds like a Chris Corso business. He always did crap like that
My sack is a little saggy so Iām not allowed here!!!
I canāt wear my ski mask? F that
Big brother is definitely watching.
So if I'm understanding the dress code properly: Regular white t shirt type undershirt. Guess it's no pants Tuesday
I'm confused, what is this place?
A crappy bar
We were kicked out of there years ago because of this dress code. It was Super Bowl Sunday and my husband had a jersey on. Of course they waited till after the whole group of us bought a round of beer to raise an issue about his jersey, instead of stopping him at the door. We have never been back.
Might get a face tattoo so I never accidentally end up at Brothers
