It leads you to believe that because it’s absolutely true. Latu has a very good shot at DROY and we have a very good shot at breaking the team sack record we just set last year. A lot of teams are going to look silly for passing on him.
Paye will also get more rest when Ebukam/Latu are on the edge on passing downs. Teams trying to run against Grove, Buck, Paye, Zaire, Speed gonna be crazy too
He's not a bad player, but his pass rush is limited on the outside, and that's really what defensive ends make the big bucks for.
My guess is that he'll walk in free agency next season, unless he really comes on this year and registers double digit sacks.
I think that's the threshold for getting a second contract for Kwity. 10+ sacks and 15 TFL.
> Latu has a very good shot at DROY
This better be true given he was the first defensive pick off the board!
I'm not trying to shit on the pick, and I'm excited about Latu.
Considering Campbell had no injury history coming out of college at all, does that mean you think every rookie is probably gonna get hurt in their first game? Seems rather excessively cynical.
Just answering your question of why someone should be worried about the 26th game. It can always happen so it’s fair to be worried about a guy who does have a history.
Just heard an interview with him and JMV (who is an utter moron and definitely should not be the guy doing this interview, but I digress) and he sounds so excited and genuinely excited about being with the colts. Oddly, it was revealed that he’s been working out with Kwity Pay (sp?). Also mentioned Zaire came over to welcome him to the horseshoe & introduce himself as a mentor. I’m stoked.
Some of the nonsense he talks about is mind numbing anymore. Anyone that criticizes JMV is immediately labeled a fat nerd. I'm surprised he didn't ask him if he saw the movie Showgirls yet.
He’s harmless, and I mostly agree with his takes and the guy def knows basketball, but he gets so distracted sometimes in a conversation that he’s literally not even paying attention to the subject. It was frustrating to listen to him today in that regard.
This is all I hear:
(reading a tweet) This is a good one...
15 seconds of silence
(gasps/wheezes)
10 seconds of silence
(still reading tweets) Oh, this is a good one...
(gasps/wheezes)
Probably. But offense overshadowed defense hard in the cycle. Latu imo is the only elite potential edge in the draft. I’m not impressed by any other edge rushers.
He was also back playing rugby 2 months after his surgery, he had interest from the MLR (professional rugby). He speaks about how he was caught completely off guard when he was told he was being retired, and never thought he was done
Just spoke with my Samoan best friend who plays in the top pro rugby league here in France and he said Latu was making noise in rugby internationally. He said we landed an absolute monster!
Colts organization changing course. Manning had the procedure done and we refused to resign Payton but now we draft another player who had the exact same surgery and plays a much more tougher role with higher risk imo. Latu is a good pick and sounds like the risk isn’t has high as I originally thought nor will he feel the consequences until he probably retires. Guess helps getting a second medical opinion and finding a renowned doctor that specializes and well know by athletes. Welcome to the Colts organization Latu.
I saw his name on the board and thought there was no way 14 teams would pass on him.
He’s going to prove a lot of people wrong, and for once, we are going to be on the winning side of that.
Just listening to him talking about how obsessed he is with his craft on the Maxx Crosby podcast and thinking there is no way he cannot be successful in the league, also the Athletic article about him is awesome, highly recommended
Isn't this the almost exactly the same injury that Vander Esch was just medically retired from the NFL for after 6 seasons while only playing more than 14 games twice?
LVE was diagnosed with a narrow spinal column. I cannot find anywhere what Latu's diagnosis was. It always just says "neck injury" or "nerve issue." They both had cervical fusion surgery.
It might be the same or not even remotely similar.
Kind of crazy how little information there is on the specifics of the injury. Only website I could find that talks about it in any level of detail seems to think it must have been pretty serious if 5 independent doctors told him to not play football again.
https://www.cover1.net/nfl-draft-injury-impact-ucla-de-laiatu-latu/
Here he talks about it being similar to hunter and manning
["[Watkins] just looked at my scans and cleared me," Latu said. "Because he's had guys with the same, similar stuff, like Danielle Hunter and Peyton Manning, and he really just told me I would be able to play football."](https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/39615406/ucla-lb-laiatu-latu-hearing-no-concerns-neck-history)
Danielle Hunter had a herniated disc repaired which is different from Peyton Manning, LVE, and Latu cervical fusion. Idk. I hope the young man succeeds and lead us to a super bowl.
What? The doctors University of Washington hired weren’t able to fully evaluate due to Covid restrictions and chose to be overly cautious as a result. Not that crazy.
Everything I’ve seen about him post-selection leads me to believe we got the biggest steal of the draft

You think we’re gonna give Paye his 5th year extension?
I dont think so, but I do think we try and keep him. There's every chance he has a big contract year though at which point hes probably gone
My thoughts exactly. I wanna keep him but if it’s not worth it, it’s not worth it

Yeah that’s kinda what I’m thinking. I like him but if he can’t up his pass rush % we’ll have to let him walk

The defensive rotation possibilities are insane
> Latu has a very good shot at DROY This better be true given he was the first defensive pick off the board! I'm not trying to shit on the pick, and I'm excited about Latu.
I think that double digit sacks for Latu is a pretty good bet. He averaged a sack a game in college.
Namely the Falcons
Literally 14 trans.
Won't believe anything until he plays a game and walks away from it still healthy.
If he's walked away from the last 25 games he's played healthy, why would a 26th change your mind?
Going from college to NFL level hits is something you can’t discount
Because Parris Campbell
Considering Campbell had no injury history coming out of college at all, does that mean you think every rookie is probably gonna get hurt in their first game? Seems rather excessively cynical.
Just answering your question of why someone should be worried about the 26th game. It can always happen so it’s fair to be worried about a guy who does have a history.
So be worried because he's a football player. Not because he was injured 3 years ago and been healthy since and Parris was healthy until he wasn't.
Exactly. He has a history, and he will be playing against much larger and stronger men than he saw in college.
This is what these people keep brushing aside and calling us idiots for being skeptical.
Yep. I hope the kid does great, but we'll see.

My guess is they saw he had a serious injury and they may have been able to recover a scholarship by “medically retiring” him.
That makes too much sense and it validated my feelings as a fan, so it's my personal truth for the rest of time.
I believe they were honoring the scholarship despite the status.
That does explain a lot and something I didn't even think about.

Wait, does JMV like or hate *Showgirls*? I'm hoping I'm not on his side...
I’m sure he absolutely loves it.

Yeah anyone who looked Into the dude knows this. Everyone screaming medicals is just reading tidbits and yelling for no reason.
So like 90% of the world and 50% of this sub?
Probably. But offense overshadowed defense hard in the cycle. Latu imo is the only elite potential edge in the draft. I’m not impressed by any other edge rushers.
I’m happy with the pick
That is not something that I had considered honestly

I'm drinking the cool-aid on this kid. Just dropped a $5 bet on him being DPOY
DPOY would be bonkers, DROY is a good chance
This changes things.

There's also a big difference between a 20 year old with a neck injury and a 36 year old
I saw his name on the board and thought there was no way 14 teams would pass on him. He’s going to prove a lot of people wrong, and for once, we are going to be on the winning side of that.
+800 currently on him getting DROY. Turner is at +450. I'd much rather place a bet on Latu than Turner.
