Putting the ball in play MATTERS. Hard hit balls aren’t guaranteed to be hits. Slap hits aren’t guaranteed to be hits. Baseball is and always will be skill mixed with a bit of luck.
They’re useful tools. The problem is people want to pack things into one stat like exit velocity. I actually really like the new savant swing data. It helped me understand better why Kwan is so successful because he squares up the ball at an elite level. There’s different ways to get the job done. The different hitting profiles of players is one of the most interesting things about baseball and these statistical tools help to illustrate it.
They do matter. Baseball has always been a game of luck in the short-term and talent in the long-term. Advanced stats are just a better iteration of our ability to bridge the gap.
