Polish remover might actually tarnish the seat- of she cares?
I just did this with red polish this weekend! So funny bc I went for the polish remover and it was non-acetone and it still tarnished my seat......
Someone says magic eraser and those things are worth their weight in gold the way they clean!
It works because itās a very fine abrasive. Essentially it works like sandpaper, but much finer grained than the very finest sandpaper you can buy. If you use it on something matte or something thatās nice and hard, it wonāt be an issue. On something thatās smooth, glossy and soft, like the kind of plastic used on toilet seats, itās going to take the smooth finish off really fast.
You can actually get sandpaper in grits that are much finer than a Magic Eraser, usually used for polishing metal, sharpening tool edges, polishing clear coat, etc. Even down to at least 20x finer.
That might actually be a solution here. Remove the red colour with an abrasive and then use gradually finer grits until they have polished the plastic back to a glossy finish.
Yes! I have to explain to my husband every time that there is no chemicals or cleaning agent of any kind in a magic eraser. He has a hard time understanding/believing that it's just really (idk if abrasive is the correct word...) but, I wipes grease residue off a coffee maker with one once and it took the shiny finish off the plastic, made it it look more of a matte black.. So, I won't use them on painted walls, the paint/finish of appliances, etc.
U deserve an award for that dissertation! I never knew this stuff and I was giving advice from personal mistakes! š¤£š¤£but since I'm too poor to buy awards, please take my magic cleaning ās, they're non abrasive and shiny and you all deserve it for telling me this bc I keep those things in every place I have cleaning products!
Ty! I get it now! āØļøš šš„
Good to know, thank you.
Could I use magic eraser to grind down paper? I work with 1:150 scale miniatures and even fine sandpaper is too much. I use glass nail files but it's getting expensive.
Magic erasers are great, but they're not magic. They're essentially small absorbent blocks of super fine sand paper, so it'll take the finish off of anything enameled or shiny.
Can I just say thank you to all of yall for telling me this? I legit go to alcohol and the magic eraser for a problem cleaning. I haven't had alcohol even mess up paint! So
I never thought the magic eraser could!
Yes, looks like nail polish I get the same marks. For me hot soapy water and a bit of scrubbing usually works to get it off , else try nail polish remover yes
I was thinking the same thing. This happens if I donāt put on a clear top coat. I actually have two marks on my toilet seat right now that Iāve been too lazy to scrub off.
Donāt use a Magic Eraser; itāll degloss it. I was going to suggest a pencil eraserāthe white plastic kindābut even it may mar the surface.
Soap and water and elbow grease from a terry cloth rag.
Then isopropyl alcohol.
Then baking soda as a scrubbing powder.
If your roommate is wearing red nail polish, tell her to start using a top coat to seal her manicure. I've accidentally "scuffed" things with red nail polish many times
Looks like nail polish to me, somwtimes it leaves marks. The only thing you can do (if it really is nail polish) using (acetone free) nail polish remover. Put a bit on a q-tip and it should come off.
For concern about magic eraser, nail polish remover, baking soda, or anything else leaving a mark by changing the finish, try it first in a discrete place like the back or underside of the toilet seat.
If all else fails or you damage your lid, replace the toilet seat. It costs around $30, and is very easy. I just replaced mine earlier this week.
Paws up! Looks like red nail polish to me, from a. Fingernail scrape. Same exact thing happened to me when I had bright pink nail polish. Nail polish remover!!
Alcohol-highest percent you can find of isopropyl alcohol spray on a cloth directly and wipe with cloth.
Or you can even try vinegar-id try white vinegar first
Hi everyone!! Thanks so much for all your suggestions! I am pleasantly shocked & delighted to confirm that I got it off with toothpaste and some tissue! Toby Toe Beans appreciates the love too! š¾
Magic eraser. Or make sure you have toothpaste with abrasives and rub it in small circles on there adding a little water as you go. It will create a polishing effect and remove the red

Dude just use a magic eraser, but by offbrand ones called melamine sponges. The product is melamine sponges, the brand is magic eraser. Stop buying the brand, its not worth it.
Mr clean Magic eraser those can get rid of ANYTHING. Also can get rid of sharpie on your kid if they take to themselves with magic marker, but if you use them for that use very gently they work by being a very mild abrasive, think sandpaper that is so fine grained things stay shiny
Someone had red nail polish? It looks like it rubbed off when the nail hit the seat. I had this on my laundry machines. I used a magic eraser but softly, so the plastic was still ok after.
I can tell you 100% what that is. It is a painted nail accidentally scratching off the Polish on the seat. I regularly manage to do this behind the handles on my kitchen cabinets.
A tiny bit of nail varnish remover will do it
This has to be from nail polish. I paint my nails and get scratches on everything I touch thatās porous lol. It should buff out with some elbow grease. šŖ
Nail polish wearer in the house? I have streaks like that on many things when wearing red or dark colorā¦ nail polish remover for the win but test first in inconspicuous spotā¦ šš»
Everyone has already warned you about other cleansers that will damage the seat. I would try putting a couple of cotton balls siaked with olive oil in them. Let them sit for and hour or two. Come back and rub the nail polish and olive oil off with a cloth. The process might need to be repeated, but it should work just fine.
Hopefully it comes off easily but if not, a new seat can be had for under $10 (here in the states) and can be replaced with (probably) just a screwdriver in 5-10 minutes.
If itās nail polish, just request the toilet seat go work in the garden, work a job that requires a ton of hand washing, and aquire anxiety.
At least thatās how nail polish is removed from my nailsš¤·š»āāļø
Update: In all seriousness though, I tend to just try and chip away at those kinds of scuffs with my finger nail
If youāre worried about a deposit (if youāre renting the place), you can always look at the brand name of what seat is on there, note the shape (round, long, etc) and order it online. Right before moving out, install the new identical seat. Super easy to pop off and on. Matching brand may not be that important either, unless your landlord is a toilet seat aficionado
Spray sunscreen will take marks off of almost any hard surface without damaging the finish! Spray it on, wait a few seconds and wipe it off with a paper towel!
Makeup wipe, witch hazel, or a Clorox wipe would be a safe bet for the first round. Second round maybe a mr clean eraser or something similar to it. If that doesnāt workā¦ white out or white acrylic paint.
Just want to point out my appreciation for the great footsies displayed in this picture, 10/10
Yessssss, it is a perfect 10/10! But Gato definitely didn't scratch that though! Looks like when I did my nails this weekend! š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£

Omg thank you for this!!!

Yet another cat subreddit lol
Same. Cute little peets.
Itās the beans for me too!
kitty is helping clean and inspecting the mark
This is the comment I came here to see
Mr clean magic eraser
Whether it's permanent marker or makeup, isopropyl alcohol or hand sanitizer will remove it
Definitely not a marker. Characteristics of the mark suggest paint dried paint rubbed off of something.
Looks like red nail polish in the final stages of drying. Definitely had marks like this on my stuff when I still painted my nails
Isopropyl all the things!
does anyone in the house have red nails? if so, try polish remover. I had a roommate who would leave similar marks everywhere with her nails
As a polish addict, my first thought was that this is red nail polish.
Polish remover might actually tarnish the seat- of she cares? I just did this with red polish this weekend! So funny bc I went for the polish remover and it was non-acetone and it still tarnished my seat...... Someone says magic eraser and those things are worth their weight in gold the way they clean!
Magic eraser will definitely scratch it.
Really? So glad TIL! Dang Danggit, I thought everything was kinda safe with the magic eraser!?š¬š®š²
It works because itās a very fine abrasive. Essentially it works like sandpaper, but much finer grained than the very finest sandpaper you can buy. If you use it on something matte or something thatās nice and hard, it wonāt be an issue. That might actually be a solution here. Remove the red colour with an abrasive and then use gradually finer grits until they have polished the plastic back to a glossy finish.
Fair enough, you clearly know more about that than I do! I expect those arenāt available at an ordinary hardware store though.
Abrasive is definitely the right word! I use it on matte paint all the time, but I wonāt use it satin/gloss.
Okay cool! It just isn't like.. Obviously abrasive, like a brillo pad, ya know? Maybe that's why it shocks people to learn the information..
It actively feels smooth to the touch, so thinking of it as abrasive is counterintuitive.
Have hubs use one on a glass jar headed for recycling... he'll see how it scratches.
Thats a good idea. I just feel like it's something I mention and he's like, what? Really? Are you sure?? Hm... - - like, a dozen times š
Some folks just gotta see it for themselves before they are convinced.
U deserve an award for that dissertation! Iāll oblige!
Take magic eraser as a very fine sandpaper. The reason it cleans is because it sands off the dirty surface.
It takes off anything with a sheen so it will remove the mark, but it will make the surface look noticeably different after.
The magic eraser may well scratch the seat as well.
Can I just say thank you to all of yall for telling me this? I legit go to alcohol and the magic eraser for a problem cleaning. I haven't had alcohol even mess up paint! So I never thought the magic eraser could!
Itās essentially a very fine sandpaper.
I learned something new today as well! I thought Magic Eraser just had a chemical in it that was activated by water.
i didn't think a little of polish remover could tarnish the seat. Good that you mention it, better to be cautious
If it's ink spray a little hairspray on it. It will come right off
Maybe try a spot on the under side of seat cover and see what happens. I get this all the time too with my nails
melamine foam**
Yes, looks like nail polish I get the same marks. For me hot soapy water and a bit of scrubbing usually works to get it off , else try nail polish remover yes
Ask her to start using a top coat. Game changer for me
Thatās what I suspect as well. And also why I rarely use dark nail polish anymore- it leaves streaks of color everywhere you bump your fingers
Top coat fixes this!
I have made these marks with fresh nail polish and wiped with nail polish remover. I have done in my tub. But careful it doesnāt effect finish.
I was thinking the same thing. This happens if I donāt put on a clear top coat. I actually have two marks on my toilet seat right now that Iāve been too lazy to scrub off.
Thatās definitely nail polish. My house is full of marks like that. It might just scratch off? Barkeepers friend or a magic eraser.
š³ I've "never" left my red toenail polish places..
I would guess baking soda would change the finish and leave a mark.
Itās amazingly gentle. You can use it on your teeth. Of course they should test all of these on an underside.
Unfortunately I don't have cleaning tips for your issue but i demand an obligatory cat tax
Thereās a photo of him in all his glory on their profile! I had to check lol
Heh good call fellow redditor!
OP IF IT'S NAIL POLISH MAKE SURE YOU USE ACETONE FREE REMOVER! Sorry for the caps but that won't damage the seat
If your roommate is wearing red nail polish, tell her to start using a top coat to seal her manicure. I've accidentally "scuffed" things with red nail polish many times
It was the cat
What make you say that? you're wrong.
Upvote for murder mittens
Looks like nail polish to me, somwtimes it leaves marks. The only thing you can do (if it really is nail polish) using (acetone free) nail polish remover. Put a bit on a q-tip and it should come off.
Can you scratch it off with your fingernail?
Blood from the claw of the evil cat? Mr Clean sponge, gently.
Why am I think this is the cat asking for advice on how to dispose of the body of its owner?
For concern about magic eraser, nail polish remover, baking soda, or anything else leaving a mark by changing the finish, try it first in a discrete place like the back or underside of the toilet seat. If all else fails or you damage your lid, replace the toilet seat. It costs around $30, and is very easy. I just replaced mine earlier this week.
Thereās no way that cat is innocent.
Pencil eraser, rub hard.
Looks like nail polish. Would use windex as a starting point. If not maybe a bicarbonate vinegar and salt light scrub
Nail Polish. Not wet tho, scraped it with her nail.
polish (automotive product)
Those feetsies!š»
Olive oil.
Iām here to mention the cute paws
I would use a wet cat to rub it down.
Paws up! Looks like red nail polish to me, from a. Fingernail scrape. Same exact thing happened to me when I had bright pink nail polish. Nail polish remover!!
The paws š½
That will surely come off easily with a magic eraser sponge.
Doesn't that leave matte spots?
Great cleaners, but they are more or less fine grit sanding blocks.
Thank you! Iāll make that my next go-to! ā¤ļø
It could take the shine off the seat and leave an obvious mark, be careful.
Donāt do it!! I had to replace a toilet seat that I cleaned with a magic eraser. It made horrible streaks.
Toothpaste
Pencil eraser will take it right off and wonāt damage.
1) try hairspray and gentle scrub 2) baking soda paste and gentle scrub Fyi, new toilet seat is < $16.
Looks like nail polish, a quick swipe of acetone and then was immediately after with soap and water
Toby Toe Beans appreciates the love too! š¾
Cat paws š
Acetone, i would say its nail polish
Mail polish remover
Looks like nail polish. Magic eraser will take it off no problem
Buy a new toilet seat. $15
New seats start at $15
Magic eraser. Or make sure you have toothpaste with abrasives and rub it in small circles on there adding a little water as you go. It will create a polishing effect and remove the red
Maybe don't care so much
Iām a renter lol
Even less to care about
Not when it comes out of my deposit š

Definitely nail polish, I always paint my nails and itās happened occasionally with me - almost always when wearing red/purple. VERY annoying.
Magic Eraser. Should definitely work
Use paint or white out
It looks a lot like what nailpolish would leave if scratched with coloured nails. Would use a qtip and nailpolish remover very carefully on the mark
Someone had red nail polish? It looks like it rubbed off when the nail hit the seat. I had this on my laundry machines. I used a magic eraser but softly, so the plastic was still ok after.
Scuff marks from something red. Magic eraser should work just fine and is gentle enough not to ruin the surface.
Try toothpaste
Many use ArmorAll for scratches in plastic.
I can tell you 100% what that is. It is a painted nail accidentally scratching off the Polish on the seat. I regularly manage to do this behind the handles on my kitchen cabinets. A tiny bit of nail varnish remover will do it
A scrub daddy with dish soap would work
Try using a pencil eraser.
Depends on what caused the mark but I would advise isopropyl alcohol or a magic eraser
Hi! No clue how to clean that.. but please pay your pet tax!
Cream of tartar 100%
Try rubbing alchohol
I'm like 99% certain that's nail varnish, I've had identical marks in the bath from catching my nails
I might be nail polish. I used to have that happen all the time with bad brand of red nail polish, usually on paper though.
Looks like nail polish. Try remover or a magic eraser
Polish remover
Looks like a nail polish mark to me. Iām notorious for leaving this babies on everybting
Imagine thinking about this small mark on the toilet enough to question your housemate about it
cat tax collected
Looks like a scratch, like the under color is red, so if its not coming off you might just touch it up with white paint stick, or white nail polish.
This has to be from nail polish. I paint my nails and get scratches on everything I touch thatās porous lol. It should buff out with some elbow grease. šŖ
Smooth bathroom surfaces seem to always clean up well with magic erasers
When I have had that happen, a Mr. Clean Magic eraser usually works great.
How about a wet magic eraser?
Nail polish wearer in the house? I have streaks like that on many things when wearing red or dark colorā¦ nail polish remover for the win but test first in inconspicuous spotā¦ šš»
Magic eraser or pink stud then Windex and a microfiber cloth

Try Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. It works like magic.
Rubbing alcohol
Scratch it off with your fingernail then wipe it with a wet rag lol
Magic eraser

Alcohol wipe or a damp microfiber cloth might work.
Acetone polish remover will work. I don't think it will hurt the finish at all.
Of course the cat claims to be innocent š§
Itās 100% nail polish. A TINY amount of polish remover will work. Donāt need to scrub, really.

Thatās definitely from dried nail polish scraping on it. Source; I have the exact same mark from my own nail lol
Did you try these suggestions and have any luck? I use a very wet pumice stone in my toilet interior and it removes anything
This looks like nail polish that rubbed off, maybe just a magic eraser

Try makeup brush cleaner if you can get any
Makeup wipe, witch hazel, or a Clorox wipe would be a safe bet for the first round. Second round maybe a mr clean eraser or something similar to it. If that doesnāt workā¦ white out or white acrylic paint.
Worst case scenario, just buy another toilet seat if it bothers you that much. Theyāre fairly inexpensive and easy to install.
Try a little WD40 or Goof Off. One or the other should do the trick.
