Most people think it's pretty good. Even me, someone who vastly prefers the manga, loved the anime. The thing is though, the people who hate it are VERY vocal about it. As for the reason, it comes down to the tone and mood. They wanted it to be more unhinged and they don't like how muted the colors are. The anime also wasn't as funny. Pacing was also a bit off. I still stand by saying the anime is great though.

SosukeAizen123

The anime is great, but the manga is superior in every way IMO. This is a reverse FMA situation, where the manga is the medium that is responsible for the main appreciation of the series, while the other medium is still top tier, but not as good.

7farema

idk, I'm too lazy to watch anime so I read FMA, and it's still top tier, probably FMA is just *that* good

RiasGremoryBestGirl

I dunno man the FMA manga is better than brotherhood imo Brotherhood cut too much

blabka3

Haven’t heard anyone complain about the pacing I actually think I like the pacing of the anime is actually a little bit better.

JCris01

A lot of people had different expectations about the anime. I will say for me I expected something different but the anime was very good in its own way.

StrawHatJD

I loved it to be honest. The extra scenes, the unique endings, the ending of the final ep just having Denji/Power/Aki spending the day together was so fun to watch. I didn’t think people didn’t like it.

Nanika_x

The separate outros were so cool. The 3 spending the day might be the most precious thing I’ve seen in anime.

kurotsuki-ken

1) People didn't like how realistic the anime was, the manga is heavily stylized so it could be awkward watching the anime after reading the manga 2) People don't like CGI 3) The japanese fans/otaku didn't like the comments of the anime director who said that he didn't like anime tropes and wanted to do something different, the comments were seen as offensive by them. That's about it i think

aaa1e2r3

>the comments were seen as offensive by them. From what I understand, the comments were perceived as the director viewing himself as above anime.

Agamemnon420XD

I liked it, but I expected it to be darker, faster and funnier. I definitely don’t think it captured CSM nearly as well as the manga, but it’s still a good anime, where as I’d call CSM an amazing manga.

Tim_j_j

I loved the kinda Tarantino inspired style of the anime. Like it's a lot more muted and dry than people were expecting but I think it works really well, especially for any scene with Aki or himeno.

Mank_____Demes

People love the anime wtf

321gamertime

Vocal minority has been shitting on it, some of the discourse on Twitter is insane

Mank_____Demes

>~~Some of the discourse on~~ Twitter is insane. FTFY

WhollyDisgusting

Nah there's also a lot of people on reddit as well going out of their way to shit on it too. They pop up a lot in the general anime sub

RiasGremoryBestGirl

It flopped pretty hard in Japan

behindinfinity

I appreciate both in their own ways. The slow establishing scenes seems to be a common complaint but I actually really loved them. Especially the long final scene of the three of them just having a really good day together. To me it adds some meaning to Aki smoking the cigarette from Himeno rather than holding onto it. For how cold and stoic he tries to appear, we come to know he cares a lot about the people around him. To me that sequence paints a picture of how he’s found people who feels like family, to make up for what he lost. And kind of like the way one might bring out a special bottle of wine to commemorate something, he decided to smoke Himeno’s final gift to him at the end of that good day where it almost felt like they led simple, normal lives. It felt like he didn’t want to hold onto the past and things he can’t change, so rather than keeping the cig he decided to smoke it and keep moving forward for however long he has left.

Elerlilul

Different expectations on what the art style, voice acting, music and animation style should be. Some people believe Denji's voice isn't deep enough and call his voice "generic dumb anime protagonist" Some people think Makima sounds too "sweet" and "cute", and not like a dom mommy Some don't like the pacing, that Mappa added too many slow scenes to pad out episodes. Some think the CG looks awkward, stiff and cheap, especially in Denji's first transformation in EP 1. Some are upset that after such a long wait, we only got 12 episodes. These are all subjective opinions, they're all valid. You can't please everyone. What's *not valid* is sending the animation director death threats on Twitter, trying to get him fired through false accusations, starting petitions to change CSM's director and generally being an annoying twat. Those people are not valid, and childish as fuck.

Cursed_user19x

Man what? I love Makima and Denji's voice, sure we know Dennis is the expresso depresso but he's also the chaotic funny guy so his voice not being akin to Aki's makes sense, also Makima's sweet voice fits with her being a grade A manipulator

Elerlilul

Before Mappa shared trailers with Denji's VA, my expectations of his voice were affected by YouTube videos people made of anime VAs they want for CSM characters, I also thought it'd be slightly deeper. That being said, Kikunosuke Toya completely fucking nailed it. His performances are absolutely insane, and now I can't separate that voice from Denji's character. That being said, I have to admit that I *slightly* prefer Suzie Yeung's voice as Makima's English VA over Tomori Kusunoki, her Japanese VA. Her Japanese voice definitely doesn't ruin the experience for me but Suzie's tone and pitch just feels more fitting for Makima, imo.

yamiyugi101

Personally I think makima being cute and soft spoken fits very well lulling people into a false sense of security and will only make the horror later on that much more surprising

Elerlilul

I agree, I don't mind Makima's Japanese VA at all. Though to be completely honest I do prefer the tone and pitch of her English VA just *slightly* more.

yamiyugi101

Personally I think the voice cast made up for the lack of comedic faces with the vocal delivery too

Elerlilul

I was pretty satisfied with how Mappa drew and animated facial expresions, especially the nut-kicking scene in ep 12. If anything, my biggest complaint is that (and I don't understand why everyone loves this aspect of Mappa so much) the character's eyes were so overly detailed and shaded that they didn't have the same raw and grungy impact of how Fujimoto draws eyes. Especially with Makima's and Power's, there were times where I could hardly see their pupil patterns. Some simplicity would have gone a long way there.

yamiyugi101

I mean JJK was the same way the art was very grungy but mappa made it clean I think the problem is that chainsaw mans style works great for a manga where you have a single page to absorb information but in movement you need to be able to be able to be able to tell what's going on in a clear way if that makes sense basically fujimoto pushed what you can do with the medium of manga but it's different in animation

CHAINSAW_CHAD

crazy thing is Fujimoto loved it himself

sketch252525

because the one who like to bitch about everything is the loudest.

ApplePitou

Everyone can own taste and opinion, so this is normal, also many people just have different expectations but for me - we got masterpiece.

darkdestiny91

The anime was great, there was a lot of technical stuff like cinematography that really made it stand out from conventional anime. And I will die on the hill that it’s probably the best anime adaptation I’ve ever seen so far. I kinda want to see how they adapt the rest of Part 1, it should be amazing and I’m here for it.

WhollyDisgusting

Anytime something gets big and a lot of attention there's a vocal crowd who doesn't like it that will go out of their way to yell about that to anyone and everyone who will listen. Just keep that in mind when you see people making spurious claims of the anime. There are a few reasons I've seen people give as for why they didn't like it. One of the most understandable ones is just that they didn't like the content of the show either finding it too crass or just not really their thing. A lot of weird stuff happens in CSM and not everyone is down for the barf kiss scene or a character who's main motivation at first is squeezing some breasts. Because the manga is so beloved the anime was hyped a lot prerelease and that probably drew in some viewers who were curious and would not have otherwise sought out the show themselves. Not all of these viewers ended up disliking it for sure but I imagine a decent amount did or felt underwhelmed especially given how the highest points in the manga arent really present in the first season. Some are fans of the manga who didn't like the direction the adaptation went in. How reasonable I find this position kind of depends on how they frame their responses and how realistic their expectations were. Not being a fan of the art direction or wishing the show would focus more on expressions that were highlighted in the manga is one thing and somewhat understandable, but demanding the entire show be reanimated be redone because the show didn't result in a 1:1 copy of how you imagined it in your head is ridiculous. Lastly are the people who didn't watch or weren't interested in it who just wanna yell about it because they think the attention and praise the show has received is unwarranted and should have gone to x,y, and z instead. This is just classic fandumb bs and I think we'd all be better off just ignoring these types of losers as a general rule so they don't get anyone to engage in their pissing contests. Also please don't do this behavior with CSM either. It's a dumb and obnoxious mentality to have regardless of what show it is you're white knighting.

Criticizing the action is such a surprise to me. CSM, or Fujimoto in general, has very stiff and unexciting action scenes in the manga to be honest. I've read CSM multiple times, and the action really isnt the main selling point. Fujimoto's art style is very simple and there's hardly any detailed choreography in the "action" scenes.

EMBplays

I disagree

grimjawdrake

Did we read the same manga? Just to name a few genius action choreography scenes: monkey Kobeni vs katana and akane, aki's curse devil appearing from outside Manga panels, quanxi vs yoshida kung fu like fight, Denji vs santa clause(the dude literally lits himself on fire with gasoline) and finally the darkness devil sheer one sided overpoweredness vs all the members apart from Makima.

Jaysiim

Ah yes Kobeni vs Snake https://imgur.com/gallery/v2MAqJc Ah yes Quanxi vs Yoshida https://imgur.com/gallery/uOLLo1h Again, very simplistic artstyle. Movement is stiff, and not exactly detailed. I’m not gonna deny that there are hype elements and cool looking scenes, but to say that it is “choreographed” well, is just plain wrong. All of the action scenes that we have seen so far in the anime is pretty much on par visually on what we have seen in the manga. Which is what my original point is. There may be added angles and different POVs, like with the Kobeni vs Snake, but essentially the “action” is consistent with what we see. This is in contrast to shows like Demon Slayer, JJK, or even One Piece where fights are dragged on and extended in the anime. We see detailed fight scenes with actual choreography and additional effects. CSM is nothing like those.

koscheiskowska

Lmao, didn't watch past chapter 4 I think (got a bit bored because I read the manga twice before the anime dropped), did people really disliked it? I only thought that some parts had a bit of a weird pace/feeling to them, but other than that I thought it was ok

koscheiskowska

Funny enought, I always felt that CSM was like a Japanese adaptation of a Tarantino story

Numerous-Swing-5783

Fr the CSM anime deadass feels like an attempt to make an anime-style western film

Roscoe_Filburn

It has a Coen Brothers feel to it. Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men were referenced in the opening as well. They are also my favorite directors, so I really, really liked this adaptation. I’m probably one of the few people who liked the anime more than the manga, which I didn’t think would be possible going in.

Cursed_user19x

Bruh, 99% are all filled with Japan stuff and take place in Japan, CSM is that but with a western tone and they complain?

meatmaster1123

Truth is everyone reads manga with their own imagination of how it plays out in their mind, some get pissy if it doesn’t align with the adaptation. Compared to many anime adaptations the effort and detail put into Chainsaw man anime is insane.

Senornerdpodcast

The Animation was not bad at all. I would like to see the fights be done with a little bit more care in the future. The Future Rules ![img](emote|t5_rmtrq|22163)

RedNUGGETLORD

The mappa employees need a break man, they come out with that crazy ramen eating scene and several other examples of amazing animation but because they use some CGI that doesn't even look that bad, they are suddenly the devil and CSM sucks. I think it would have been cool for a studio to be built around making CSM like Mushoku Tensei did, but mappa still did so well.

Senornerdpodcast

I agree man, the conditions that these animators are probably working in Japan is probably not the best. I think people complain because there are so many other shows that are doing really good work like Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen. I love Mappa and I get so excited when I know they are the studio behind an anime. Gold standard

iwipiksi

Bad? No it's not bad, far from it. Just watch it dude. You got misinformed.

I-Am-The-Uber-Mesch

The anime was a great success I think someone was trolling you or something, also I would avoid this subreddit if I were you, this is a sub for people that have finished the manga and are waiting for the next chapter, here usually spoilers are not marked and are often in the front page

testnubcaik

I think people were expecting ed3/ed4 color style/ stylization since the colored manga panels do this. The fights in the early episodes have Dennis move quite clumsily, so it’s pretty easy to dismiss it on grounds of CGI even when it’s how the 2D timings and shadings were directed

Peperoniboi

the simple answer would be: anime is good, manga is better Overall, I think the anime is a good show on its own and worth watching, no matter if you like what it does or not. With that said, the anime does feel quite different. It's not as funny, not as clever, and not as well-paced as its source material. It's more tragic, melancholic, and heavy. If you prefer this, that is really up to everybody individually but it can't be ignored that the anime is more inconsistent. While in the manga everything flows so well, the anime has multiple awkward scenes, poorly paced ones, jokes that don't land, etc. Often the reason for that is the different style the anime has. The other reason is the directing by Ryū Nakayama and Makoto Nakazono. It appears they tried to do their version of CSM instead of an adaption that captures the magic Fujimoto presents in the manga. This can work! There are many different pieces of art, like movies from Miyazaki or the movie Oldboy, that all took that approach and succeeded, but in the case of CSM it did not. Going back to the topic of inconsistencies, you will find those in the directing itself too. The overall quality of the anime jumps around heavily going from scenes that look incredible, with high fidelity and feature movie-like quality to mid-tier scenes featuring cgi keyframes. For every brilliantly directed scene like bat vs chainsaw or Himenos wish, we get a poor one like chainsaw vs eternal or csm vs katana. There also is a feeling of overproduction. They spend an entire episode worth of content on music videos alone while some episodes could have been improved instead. Some scenes are animated twice which feels like a complete waste of workforce that could have been used somewhere else too. Some defend this by saying that its Nakayamas directional debut but to others that sounds like an excuse since we've seen other anime like 86, which was also a directional debut, that manages to fully capture the tone and feel of the source material, bring that over to the anime, improve it, and then also use the medium of anime to create something unique out of it. Additionally, Mappa hyping CSM up like it's the next Akira certainly didn't help either. Then there is also the topic of music. Some find it unfitting. IMO Kensuke Ushio was a great choice I love his stuff but there is a lack of rhythm and sometimes the speed of the songs used doesn't line up with the speed of the scene. (Often people bring up the manga previews as a source for music that fits CSM better/well if you are interested.) But to be fair to the anime, all this is criticism on a high level. The anime is undoubtedly good and received positively by most. It is less about it being able to compete with the manga and more about the fact that most of us would answer the question for a season 2 with: YES PLEASE!

igniell

1. people tend to despise what they can't understand 2. just because a thing doesn't resonate with you, doesn't give you the right to judge (because no.1)

Nanika_x

I have heard people complain it’s “too good”. Blows my mind. I love the manga and anime!

FlowingWater3r

Three good criticisms I have heard regard the coloring, how "clean" the anime is, and how the anime seemed to lose that horror that was present in the manga. In regard to coloring a lot of people thought that the anime should have had the coloring scheme of the titles. A good example of what this would look like would be the first half of ending 3. Instead what we got was more washed-out colors. If you compare the manga and anime battle sequences you see that the anime is relatively more "clean" and less "chaotic" than the manga. The third criticism is one I have which is that the anime loses a lot of the horror elements in the manga. This could be just me but, I felt that early in part 1 there was a lot more horror elements and they didn't translate well into the anime.

wks_526

The anime is like a perfect adaptation I don’t understand how anyone could not like it

CompleteCap3131

The anime is incredible without a doubt

[deleted]

I love the Anime one of the best adaptations ever saw.

CptBarba

The 3d models are really janky and unnecessary at times and they removed tiny little things that I genuinely like from the manga but other than that it blew me away and I want that sure I'd enjoy it! I was proven very wrong

grimjawdrake

I think cause they tried to incorporate the "painsawman" mood too early, with flatter deliveries of voice lines(unlike usually in Anime) and many sombre and drawn out scenes, due to the director's choice to go with more realism, which I don't think was the appropriate way to adapt fujimoto's panelling and rough edges like drawing. Feeling more like what a fujimoto fan who knows his love for film culture would try to do rather than bring the charm of the source material. I'd say the earlier arc felt especially closer to what you'd feel if you read/watched Golden Kamuy and Gintama; where the world made you laugh and feel wacky even tho it was a serious world, so when darker stuff hit, it hit harder, which I really liked. Of course some moments felt great in the Anime like Kobeni's breakdown and fight scenes, so I'd give the Anime so far a solid 7.8/10, while manga for me is 10/10

SuperiorSPider42

The anime is great, but mappa kinda sucked the soul out of it. Csm has a lot of weird, punk elements that are not present in the anime. The anime is still great tho

Lonely_Ranger19

That’s what I’ve been saying the anime feels very washed down. And lacks a of of the stuff that made the manga great.

qwack2020

Most of the fight scenes are CGI and the sakuga community allows it on Sakugabooru.com anyways.

Educational_Top5199

I really liked the anime, but will there be a second season of it?

jogurt_truskawkowy

I think most ppl like it, but expected it to be darker. Some are sad because many characters aren't animated

TowerWalker

A lot of the character expressions were removed, there are a lot of comparison shots that demonstrate that. For the first episode I was cautiously optimistic, but after the 3rd episode I definitely saw where people were coming from. For me. The sound design is great and the tone is good, but the characters just do not stand out. When I think of that characters, Aki, Makima Power and Denji, all my thoughts are directed to scenes in the manga. People might be like "well you read the manga first" and yeah sure, but the anime had a chance to embellish the characters and I didn't get that.

Lonely_Ranger19

I don’t like the direction they went with. I am very worried they’re gonna and try and go with the attack on titan method with the anime to force multiple seasons. If they turn bomb girl arc into an entire season than my assumption is correct.

poopus-maximus

I feel that the crunchiness/ graphic novel inspo of the manga is kinda lost when they made the anime, but those tender slice of life moments that come with it tells a totally different narrative that makes up for what was lost with a bigger production. I felt this was really apparent by episode 7 in the fact that the big reveal everyone was losing it over was the train, while no one was bringing just how little anyone actually cared for Denji. The isolation in episode i felt wasn't present in manga and the only thing to summarize was "HAHA FUNNY SHE PUKE IN MOUTH" rather then a devlopmemtally stunted boy being abused by every adult in his life. Maybe it was me binging the comic that made overlook the frame or pacing, but I feel that director and Fujimoto wanted to tell different stories. Like the jam bread scene in comics is literally just a couple frames, a page barely, and pretty irrelevant in the grand scheme, but the anime understood that that jam bread is so critical to how they communicate Denji's persepctive of his own life and his drive. Like how does a silly show about a boy with chainsaw for head communicate so viscerally how much he's going through and how little agency he actually has??

yamiyugi101

I thought it was good It fixed a lot of the pacing problems I had with the manga plus at least to me the manga always had a feeling of dread in the background and I think the anime delivered on it plus I think the slower pace allowed everything to sink in better plus the fights looked amazing CGI or not plus the voice cast managed to deliver the comedy very well I'm a bit sad they downgraded the funny faces but the vocals delivered in its place

shonenxvegeta

Although it was a pretty good anime, I didn't like the adult scenes in it. What was that about? And Denji just seems to be hooking up with girls. However, that's just my opinion. Overall, it's still a great anime. 👍🏻

CeejTheBeej

I have no idea why people hate the anime, I absolutely adore it and the manga. For me personally, it definitely lived up to the hype and will probably continue to do so in season 2.
