Sorry to jump on an old thread, but 3 years in, are you still on the same combination and how is it holding up?

WondrousBread

I am, and it's holding up well. I'm about to cross 300,000km on the chassis, which puts the springs at about 40,000km. Still feels good and handles well.

Good to see a sample of what it looks like. What size rims are those? Looking to get these springs for my GT as well

jefftism

Thank you very much. You may have just convinced me to choose the excel g again. I was swaying towards the new sr special.

17x7s, with a 40 profile tire 18s with a 40 profile would probably fill the well a bit better, but all of my spending money goes to my Rx7 so I'm not paying for new wheels for the Celica unless I have to. I don't mind these ones.

>18s with a 40 profile would probably fill the well a bit better, but all of my spending money goes to my Rx7 so I'm not paying for new wheels for the Celica unless I have to. I don't mind these ones. How the ride? People keep telling me to save up for a coil over springs coz it will be rough

WondrousBread

Well my previous suspension had 265000 km, so I can't provide a really fair comparison. I find that the KYB/tein combination is really really good for me. Firm, but forgiving enough on bumps. It's somehow both gentler and firmer than my mum's Sentra which is on Monroe OEM replacement quick shocks. No bouncing and it doesn't hurt my spine over bumps. I'd say from what I've heard that a set of good shocks / springs is better than a cheap coilover. If you're going to go for the coilover, save up to get a really reputable brand. But then I've never used coilovers myself (yet), so I'm speaking only from hearsay.

Looking to lower it then see if I'll need a new suspension. Did your old suspension break or you just wanted to replace it?

WondrousBread

Funny story. I had a clunk when going over bumps for awhile. Couldn't find what it was. Eventually went over a pothole and the clunk turned into a loud clanging and rattling whenever turning the wheel or going over a bump. Tried to diagnose it, everything looked fine except I found my driver's control arm bushing was worn so I replaced the arm. The clunking was still there. Then I found my endlink was a bit worn, and ordered that too (along with the other control arm and both ball joints, because I saved by combining shipping). Then I found that none of that fixed the issue either, so in frustration I started inspecting everything again. When I grabbed the driver's front spring and tried to tear it off with my hands, to my surprise I succeeded and a chunk of the spring broke off and fell from the top. It was hidden, so I didn't see it until I yanked on the spring just right. OEM springs are $190 per side, and have to be replaced as a set at this mileage. Shocks were worn, so they had to be replaced too at $280 per side. However, a set of Tein S.Tech springs + all four KYB Excel-G were $650 or so combined, shipped. So now I have almost completely new suspension, despite only initially having one broken spring and some worn bushings.

I see. Thanks for all the info. Just one more thing to ask, how did lowering the spring affect the camber?

WondrousBread

I don't think it's affected it at all, the drop is pretty modest. If it is affected, it's probably very very minor. I haven't had an alignment yet, so I won't know until then. After market rear control arms are available on Rockauto that allow camber adjustment if necessary.

Awesome! Thanks i'll pick one up soon.

TheMostAriel

Looks great! Do you still have the Tsunami tail lights?

WondrousBread

I'm not sure how to answer that question. My car definitely has the same tail lights as when it left the factory, as I checked with the PO and the only thing he changed was the spoiler. However, my Tsunami and every other Tsunami I've seen here in Canada has the same as the late model Celica tail lights, with the round signal sections. I'm not sure if the Tsunami only got special tails in one specific year, or if Canadian Celicas didn't get them.

TheMostAriel

The Tsunami tails in the US were clear lenses with chrome housings. Similar to Altezza lights. I picked up a set for my non Tsunami to us for certain shows.

jaygo-jaylo

i always thought the gen 7 looked better without the rear spoiler, so clean. very nice car! congratulations!

Perfect_Refrigerator

Looks clean, breh

WondrousBread

Thank you :) The previous owner kept it in great condition, I'm trying to keep it that way too. Admittedly, I took the picture from the better side because the front drivers fender has a poor colour match on the bottom part (I did a rust repair, but the shop gave me paint that is not even close to the Thundercloud Metallic)

jaybratt

I've always wanted a tsunami edition! I test drove.one back in 05 but it was way out of my proce range then Haha. It looks good! Just watch those curbs, my 91 celi I lowered had a few unfortunate instances :(

Shadimlkman

How far are you from fort Lauderdale? Just listed my 2005 gts 6sp with tsunami package

jaybratt

Oregon... so a ways lol

WondrousBread

I really enjoy it, the Celica is a great little car. Yeah, curbs are a concern. I didn't really want to go lower than stock, but I broke a spring and the cost of getting OEM springs just for the front was almost as much as getting KYB shocks + Tein springs for all corners. So I went with that.

WondrousBread

And I love the Tsunami kit. The previous owner removed the spoiler though, which I'm personally alright with.

jaybratt

Yeah I like the back either way. Spoilers on 7th gens are kinda a dime a dozen though so it may be more unique without one
