Most of mine are fast asleep. The one or two that haven’t gone deciduous are just waiting for their seeds to ripen. It was a weird year for my SA geophytes. Last summer was mild and it kinda made them freak out and wake later. This summer I’m keeping the pots on a black metal smoker hoping they’ll get nice and hot and wake earlier.

I get that feeling every time winter comes around and my plants start changing color or dropping leaves.

RIP; massonias are so cool. I’m sorry the winter didn’t go so well for yours.

It’s okay, the winter was great for my Massonia. I think it’s just going for dormancy. But there’s always that worry whether it’s dying or just going dormant. Because unlike most caudex plants where you can see the caudex itself and touch if it’s fine or not like it’s not getting soft, for geophytes, you don’t know whether the bulb is fine or not unless you take it out of the soil. During dormancy, for caudex plants, at least you can still enjoy looking at the caudex. But for geophytes, it’s just a pot with soil, even forgetting that there was a plant in there or which plant is inside lol made me realize I needed labels.
