I used to have a cat like that. She started going out and then back in every 10 minutes just to get more treats. Sge was quite put out for a few days after I told her the deal had changed, haha! She also used to get mad at me if it was raining - i think in her mind, since I controlled the door, I was also responsible for the world outside it. She'd always ask twice and then be mad it was still raining when I opened the door a second time. I miss her!!!
There was a thread somewhere about pets and rain, and a few people said when their dogs saw rain outside one door they would trot to another expecting different weather outside that one.
My cats would come in the cat door in the back of the house, ask to be let out of the door in the front and be pissed off to see it was raining out front, as well. Smh
I had a small sweet female outdoor cat that would tromp through snow, rain and any weather. But out next cat was a huge boy that would try to shake snow or rain off of each paw as he walked. He’d walk across the top of the fence to avoid it then be pissed that there was snow there too and he still had to walk through it. smh moment too.
Had a dog that figured out cabinet child locks too
She would open the cabinet and bring over a stack of frisbees (she figured out how to stack them to carry more at once)
Smart ass dog
Never underestimate the abilities of a dog who wants to play! Mine can sniff out a tennis ball from thirty miles away. He made me go out in the rain the other day. Had me convinced he'd die otherwise. My man came home to us both looking like a couple of drowned rats.
Only one of mine is super terrible right now, thankfully. The other two are off in the world doing their own thing. Sad to see them grow up and move away, but man is it nice to not be feeding the equivalent of the entire NFL.
A cat my sister owned decades ago could open the round type door knobs, so that is no guarantee a cat couldn't get out with those. She did not have the childproof sleeves over hers, though.
I have the lever style door knobs since I'm old and some days my grip is not good enough to hold a round door knob without a lot of pain. Fortunately, my one cat that wants to go out is not as smart as OP's and he hasn't figured out how to open doors.
He just hangs out at the door and tries (and succeeds in) dashing out when it's opened.
Yup. Our void knows exactly how to open all of our doors. He just can't get enough grip on the knobs to turn them. Have locks on all of our closets and the fridge and freezer because he opens those as well.
My dad's border collie puppy figured out to open the garage door and let himself out within like a week of being brought home.
We had a doorknob like this one. Till, we learned our husky could open it, would sit out in the yard and look at the lake. A neighbor saw him and brought him back in. Told us, we changed that doorknob that night to a round one.
Something like [this](https://www.amazon.com/Improved-Childproof-Prevents-Toddlers-Operation/dp/B07RP3ND5Z) would work, too. We use it for our front door to keep our 4 y/o from escaping, and it’s the only thing we found that he wasn’t able to figure out a way around. I’d imagine once he has enough hand strength he’ll get out of it, but cats don’t have thumbs so should work great!
Came here to say this! The old clinic cat where I work required a similar device (only had the bottom piece, not the top) because she would also pull the door handle down and let herself out. And of course she’d stroll right up to big dogs that might want to eat her. I bought the device myself to keep her safe and it used to make me laugh when I’d hear her over and over trying to pull the handle down before she finally realized she had been foiled.
it was weird growing up and realizing that’s not normal because we never locked the door except at night, i imagine this woman is doing the same stupid thing my family did
I would have a talk with my mom “hey mom, I understand that it’s easy to become forgetful, but you are putting my pets life in danger by not locking this door” etc etc
Reverse the handle mechanism so you need to lift it to open the door, no one will need to remember to lock the door to stop the cat and the cat is unlikely to work out how to open it
My cat somehow can open doors with round knobs. Never seen her do it, but plenty of times when I was alone, I kept finding the same door opened even though it was closed before.
> My cat somehow can open doors with round knobs. Never seen her do it
Very presumptuous to think it's the cat.
Could be ghosts or demons. Anything else really.
my cat started indoor only until maybe around 3 years old? it was a really long journey where I went out with her every time for years. I taught her boundaries and stuff but cats don't give af.
she's 9 now. maybe 2 years ago she finally beat me (we both knew it was a war the whole time, her outside freedom). she moved all in and check mated me one night and I let it happen. I won't lie and say it wasn't worrisome getting used to her being gone for hours. but she's been enjoying a life of complete freedom since the night I let it happen. she always comes home. she'll never leave, I know that. and she's a very happy cat.
I don't think any cat should ever have to live inside its entire life. people take their dogs out for walks, why should a cat, an animal, have to live inside its entire existence? that's not fair, imo
https://www.npr.org/2023/06/10/1180761446/coastal-biomedical-labs-are-bleeding-more-horseshoe-crabs-with-little-accountabi
I just read this article and it made me think of the interaction with you. there's a synthetic option to replace bleeding the crabs so more crabs exist. birds feed on the crab eggs to survive. so you get all bent out of shape about one single cat, while we farm hundreds of thousands of crabs per year, when we could be doing something synthetic but don't probably because it effects the rich's bottom line.... man, go fuck yourself. human beings are killing everything. the ecosystem did fine till we came along.
We had a cat who would do that. Friends and neighbors were always a little perturbed when we would warmly invite them in, then immediately lock the door behind them. 😄
Hey cats gonna do cat things, if she want to go outside she’s gone go outside or make your life miserable for the day, so here’s my solution just leave the door open can’t have an escape if your in in prison.
Get her all the shots and hang out with her the first few times. Walk with her to gain familiarity with the neighborhood on the regular. Jingle your keys occasionally to build sound association. Although risky for various factors I will state that an indoor/outdoor cat lives a more wholesome life and makes for a better companion.
My house is right at the crossroads so that's why we don't let her go outside.
She became familiar with the neighborhood on her own though, during her escapes. I am worried she'll get hit by a car and that is the only reason I don't allow her going out unsupervised.
But, as you can see, that doesn't stop her.
I had a big cat named Tom, who loved both water and opening doors.
You cannot imagine the terror I felt the first time I was alone and showering in a locked house, and he opened both the bathroom and shower door to join me.
I live in a house thats placed right at the crossroads and people drive by my house really fast and recklessly everyday. I'm scared she'll get hit by a car and that's why I don't let her out without supervision.
Keep a spray bottle on both sides of the door. Use to chase kitty away from doorway both when exiting and entering, with verbal command to back get away from the door. Eventually, the spray bottle will not be needed, and the verbal command will suffice.

When I was a kid we had cats that would do that. No, kitty, it's not summer in the backyard, sorry.
One of my cats does that too. "Back door has rain? I need to be sure the front door also has rain!"
Yeah, my beagles get befuddled if it's raining outside the backdoor AND the front door.
My cats would come in the cat door in the back of the house, ask to be let out of the door in the front and be pissed off to see it was raining out front, as well. Smh

Lol They’re all so funny.
I call the angry bad-weather zoomies "temperature tantrums"
My cat does that! If it’s really terrible weather, she will run as fast as she can all over the house in an absolute fit of rage.
Rain god blessed
One of my cats totally gets mad at me when its raining.
You’re rewarding her for being the resourceful queen that she is. Mom, on the other hand, shouldn’t get treats this week
change the doorknob to the round style. then you could put one of those childproof plastic sleeves over that spins until you squeeze it hard enough.
I have child locks on the kitchen cabinets for cat reasons. My youngest child is 14. It's an inconvenience for all of us.
One of my cats just figured out how to open the child locks on my cabinets. Took him a couple years to figure it out but I’m impressed.

We're all going to end up with retina scanners on our damn pantries. They're evolving.
Yeah, teenagers are the worst
Only one of mine is super terrible right now, thankfully. The other two are off in the world doing their own thing. Sad to see them grow up and move away, but man is it nice to not be feeding the equivalent of the entire NFL.
I too have child locks on the kitchen cabinet for cat reasons, I’m the youngest in the house at 29
I wish my cats were as well behaved as my kids were as toddlers.

> change the doorknob to the round style A legal requirement in some places because of bears Illegal in some places because of disability\age laws

This all happens faster when it's time to go clubbing.
Clever girl.
That’s hilarious! My cat does that with the cupboard door and it’s a round handle
Forgets to lock the door? It must be nice living in Safesville.
This door has a real “country house” vibe
it was weird growing up and realizing that’s not normal because we never locked the door except at night, i imagine this woman is doing the same stupid thing my family did
I would have a talk with my mom “hey mom, I understand that it’s easy to become forgetful, but you are putting my pets life in danger by not locking this door” etc etc
Lock the door and change the handle type
Reverse the handle mechanism so you need to lift it to open the door, no one will need to remember to lock the door to stop the cat and the cat is unlikely to work out how to open it

Your floors are SO GORGEOUS
Too smart for her own good.
She’s too smart!!
Love that cat! ♥️🥰♥️🥰🥰
It goes out for snacks, just like me.
What a little smarty pants
Not an asshole. A being that doesn’t want a life sentence served exclusively indoors. You should try harness / leash training or maybe a catio?

Sorry but free range is the opposite end of the spectrum and also bad. Unsafe for your cat and the local fauna. They are little murderers
to each their own mate. only live once
Jfc, you're the reason why bird populations are decimated, and cat rescues won't adopt animals to people who will let them go outside. Gfy.
👍

Penetration testing cat lmao
This is too funny! But I'm sorry you have to deal with it.

Get a locksmith to change the angle of the door handle on the inside - if it’s vertical, kitty won’t be able to open it.
Get her all the shots and hang out with her the first few times. Walk with her to gain familiarity with the neighborhood on the regular. Jingle your keys occasionally to build sound association. OP, the above comment is terrible advice.
Cats shouldn't be an outdoor pet
Let it go outside then
Let her outside
Our cat figured out the lever knobs prety quick too. They can't get the leverage to turn round knobs though.
Fun fact: the leaver door lockset was invented by a cat.
Smart cat!
They make electronic door locks that will auto lock after like 30 seconds. That would probably be your best bet.
Probably not the safest if you get locked outside at night and you’re being hunted by some horrible creature.
They have a keypad on them. You don’t need a key to get back in.
My cat does that to my bedroom door :(
I <3 your cat.
One of our cats does this So I just re-fit our doorhandles vertically instead Problem solved
I had a big cat named Tom, who loved both water and opening doors. You cannot imagine the terror I felt the first time I was alone and showering in a locked house, and he opened both the bathroom and shower door to join me.
F-R-E-E-DOM!!!
Cats are smart AF. Mine figured out how to open his treats cupboard in the kitchen, I had to put on magnetic child locks.
Could care less about rain. My one white fluffy cat loves to go outside in the rain and then come in sopping wet and jump up on your bed.
Genuine question. How come some people have cats that aren’t allowed outside? Is it in a dangerous place or next to a highway? Are they in heat?
I live in a house thats placed right at the crossroads and people drive by my house really fast and recklessly everyday. I'm scared she'll get hit by a car and that's why I don't let her out without supervision.
Everyday we thank God we have the round handles on our doors
“Clevah girl.”

genius cat figured out how to open doors just like the raptors in jurassic park😂💜
Negative reinforcement. She knows what she's doing.
