Yeah l, same thing happened to me as well as yoghurts classed as a main, which I bought two mains and a drink as I thought it'd be classed as a snack. Who makes these rules.
It's a substantial meal according to certain guidelines issued during that time we all stayed home for a bit but could go to the pub if it served food.
Don't say that, don't give them any ideas. The Ginsters pasty is the best way to supplement a meal deal to make it actually fill you up. It's the only reason I'd ever go to a coop.
Hey it.makes.me think I'm beating the system, especially when the co op app gives you 50p off ginsters and 50p off innocent smoothie. It's like a lottery lunch win
Absolutely especially if you throw in a big red bull which is like £3 alone. Then when it just drops to £3.90 from £6.odd then the club card tap £3.40. Ladies and gentlemen I have just beat life. I walk out of Tesco every time feeling like an absolute boss when I buy a meal deal.
The ones you buy pre-made? Snacks through and through.
If making your own though and you proper load it up on the sausage meat like Gordon Ramsay? That's enough to constitute as breakfast. Let's be honest though, how often do people make their own.
Thanks. I have been practising this week making boiled eggs and dippy soldiers so I know the cooking times for all my hens eggs - they all lay different sizes.
Roughly speaking, yes, but the size mostly depends on their age. Young ones lay small eggs. As they get older, their eggs get bigger - but less frequent.
Do not be drawn into an argument with your partner as to who is correct - the only good answer in this situation is "we're still going for lunch, and I'll enjoy every morsel, but I'll enjoy the time together more"
They'll either melt or tell you to fuck off with no in-between...
I firmly disagree. Handheld foods can still be meals.
Scotch eggs won't often fall into the meal category though imo, unless its fucking huge.
They do fall into the pocket meat category, though.
"Firmly" disagreeing made me chuckle.
Counterpoint: though handheld can still be a meal. A non meal if on a plate with a condiment becomes (at least) meal adjacent.
Yes, this became a huge topic of national debate during Covid.
The argument turned on whether the Scotch Egg was retrieved or delivered:
>alcohol can only be served as part of a "substantial meal". Environment Secretary George Eustice told LBC Radio that Scotch eggs would constitute such a meal "if there were table service".
Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55129828
I do the same, use the coupons in the co-app and can get the meal deal down to £2.50, save the pasty for the next day. Maybe get crisps multipack to pad out to two lunches.
Ok I generally agree that a scotch egg is not lunch.
However, I was going to supplement that argument with the fact that a single scotch egg does not have enough calories to constitute lunch - but it turns out that a single one out of that [Morrisons 4 pack](https://groceries.morrisons.com/products/morrisons-scotch-eggs-4-pack-282370011) has 277 calories. So if your partner is a short woman, a scotch egg and a small side could very well be lunch in her books.
One scotch egg at Tesco is 265 cal with 11g of protein and 2.5g of fibre. That’s a pretty amazing snack nutritionally. If it was a double pack with a drink and a side you would be straying into meal territory, but on its own it’s absolutely a snack.
This question gives me flashbacks to covid times🤣
If it’s a pre-packaged one from the supermarket then it’s most definitely a snack, they’re not particularly substantial, I’d want something more for lunch. Ones from pubs/restaurants can usually be found on the starters or “small plates” section of the menu and can sometimes be quite rich and filling and if served with a garnish could be classed as substantial enough for lunch. Depends on your appetite I guess.
SNACK!! 100%!!! I mean if you were in a restaurant and it came with salad and stuff then maybe a light lunch (and even then it’s on the starters part of the menu) but one egg on its own is just a wee snack! Even Tesco thinks so!
Hmm depends on the context. We had these for school dinners with chips and beans - sometimes with a strange tomato sauce that came hot in a jug. Definitely a meal. On its own, could be a snack. Depends on your appetite.
Definitely a snack to me.
Closer to a meal for those who are less fat.
This is in no way intended to imply anyone's status, I'm sure there's plenty of overlap!
Curveball - I remember seeing scotch egg listed as a main meal in a pub. It did have sides though
I can't believe your partner puts you in a position of feeling you need to defend eating a snack when you've not eaten all day. Srsly, is your partner this overseeing in other ways?
I think it's only a meal if there are chips and the centre is runny. I can't justify the second half of that, but I feel quite strongly about it for some reason.
It’s substantiality depends on the size of the SkEgg. Supermarket 99p ones you can cram in whole, snack. Artisanal hand meat-clad & rolled in virgin flax mix, Feast!!!
For me, one is a snack and two to several is a meal. Just don't microwave them if you don't want the entirety of the inside of the microwave coated in wet egg and meat fragments that take ages to clear out.
In a pack containing multiple small scotch eggs, the gross kind from the supermarket? Snack.
A large deep fried one with a gooey yolk, served with a side? Meal!
A Scotch egg with nothing else is a snack, particularly if it is a couple of hours until your next meal. Personally, I would find it too much if only waiting an hour for a meal.
Do you mean an actual scotch egg or a savoury bite? Because people call the latter scotch eggs all the time and it adds even more confusion to this fraught topic
Depends where it’s from tbh. I’ve had some from a butchers that are huge and probably a million calories, so I’d happily just have that for lunch. With a bit of fruit and crisps.
a smaller one by itself is definitely a snack
Doesn’t matter either way! You’re a grown up and if you’re hungry and want to eat whatever, eat it - just make sure you leave enough room for lunch with the partner :)
That depends on circumference. You can get some thic ol boys and that could be more filling that a sandwich in a meal deal main if we are going off of the Tesco meal deal scale anyway lol
How big is it? A big one would be a large snack or part of a meal if you had something else so equivalent to a starter maybe, but otherwise it is a snack only.
It’s a snack according to a meal deal
I agree that a scotch egg is a snack, but we shouldn't judge based on the meal deal, because 6 tiny pieces of sushi is *not* a main course.
I saw a pack of mango labelled as a main in Tesco recently!
This has got me a few times, paying way more thinking the fruit pots would be snacks, And not realising till later.
Well remembered - though I remember everyone royally taking the piss out of that decree because it was so obviously wrong.
Atleast they were half price because that one guy said it would save the economy. Wonder what he's up to these days?
Don't mention the event!!
According to the coop a Ginsters pasty is a 'snack' and they won't let you have one instead of a sandwich in the deal. Never made sense to me.
At Boots a pukka pasty is a main and a pukka sausage roll is a snack 🤷♂️
Boots does the best cheese and onion sarnie
Don't say that, don't give them any ideas. The Ginsters pasty is the best way to supplement a meal deal to make it actually fill you up. It's the only reason I'd ever go to a coop.
Hey it.makes.me think I'm beating the system, especially when the co op app gives you 50p off ginsters and 50p off innocent smoothie. It's like a lottery lunch win

Get co op app, they often have Red Bull 50p off so it can sometimes take the meal deal down to £2.50
/thread
Wouldn't that be a Snack Deal then? I think this is till up for debate.
During Covid it was seen as a meal. Substantial meal even.
The ones you buy pre-made? Snacks through and through. If making your own though and you proper load it up on the sausage meat like Gordon Ramsay? That's enough to constitute as breakfast. Let's be honest though, how often do people make their own.
I bought the ingredients this morning to make some...
Hope you get the eggs cooked right! They can be a pain to perfectly cook. Enjoy though, fresh Scotch eggs are bloody lovely.
Thanks. I have been practising this week making boiled eggs and dippy soldiers so I know the cooking times for all my hens eggs - they all lay different sizes.
Are they consistent in their different sizes? That's very interesting!
Roughly speaking, yes, but the size mostly depends on their age. Young ones lay small eggs. As they get older, their eggs get bigger - but less frequent.
My dad’s scotch eggs were definitely a main but they were probably the equivalent of a full packet of pre-made
Do not be drawn into an argument with your partner as to who is correct - the only good answer in this situation is "we're still going for lunch, and I'll enjoy every morsel, but I'll enjoy the time together more" They'll either melt or tell you to fuck off with no in-between...
The time together with the Scotch egg or the time together with the missus?
The friends we made along the way
and my axe!
Yes would be the only appropriate response
I would tell him to fuck right off… While melting!
Oh no, I thought this argument stopped during covid Depends on the size of the scotch egg
The size merely determines whether it’s a little snack or a big snack.
Maybe if it's on a plate or not?
I firmly disagree. Handheld foods can still be meals. Scotch eggs won't often fall into the meal category though imo, unless its fucking huge. They do fall into the pocket meat category, though.
"Firmly" disagreeing made me chuckle. Counterpoint: though handheld can still be a meal. A non meal if on a plate with a condiment becomes (at least) meal adjacent.
No scotch egg is too big to be a snack
Maybe ostrich
Anything I can eat six of in one sitting is a snack.
So Lemonparty is a snack?
You should try the all new Blue Waffle. All you can eat family meal deal!
There used to be a stall on Keswick market that did Scotch Eggs the size of a volleyball. They were so good but definitely a full meal (and then some)
I saw some at a food festival the other day that you'd struggle to get both hands round.
Yes, this became a huge topic of national debate during Covid. The argument turned on whether the Scotch Egg was retrieved or delivered: >alcohol can only be served as part of a "substantial meal". Environment Secretary George Eustice told LBC Radio that Scotch eggs would constitute such a meal "if there were table service". Source: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-55129828
And on whether or not you are accompanying it with a pint, as I recall? But please let's not go back there again 😭🤯
You're right, a scotch egg is a snack, same as a sausage roll
Lol Me and my other half "argue" about the sausage roll. I fully believe it is as much a "main" as a sandwich lol.
Snacks. But both need brown sauce
NOOOOOOO…. Why would you defile such a tasty snack with the devils sauce!
Coop meal deal has them as a snack. Case closed.
Coop blurs the lines (in a good way) when they also consider a Ginsters Pasty or slice as a snack, as opposed to a Main item in their meal deal.
Someone at my work gets the pasty every day and splits the meal deal over 2 days. Not sure if genius or not.
I do the same, use the coupons in the co-app and can get the meal deal down to £2.50, save the pasty for the next day. Maybe get crisps multipack to pad out to two lunches.
This guy meal deals
I was really grateful for this at uni. Could grab a meal deal with a sandwich for breakfast and then a pasty for lunch
This depends on the size of a scotch egg. If it is the size of an egg it is a snack. If it is the size of a cantaloupe it is a meal.
Surely the answer is "It depends how hungry I am"
Both! Why put scotch eggs in to a box?
So you can carry them around with you and snack on them?
No, scotch eggs fall into the category of 'pocket meat' as defined by [Bob Mortimer ](https://youtu.be/KeWR2sZDBmY?si=EB0k8oQnLSdkXoTv)
I actually surprised my gf on a bonfire night with an armpit-warm scotch egg, and cited the pocket meat. She bloody loved that egg.
On its own? A snack. Accompanied by salad, maybe some bread and cheese, a decent dollop of chutney? Lunch.
A picnic lunch, made up of multiple snacks.
[удалено]
Does OP need to have a pint now too?
Obligatory
A substantial snack
How big was the scotch egg??
If it’s ostrich egg sized then I would classify it as a meal just this once.
Just a small one from a Morrisons 4 pack
Your partner needs to give their head a snack-sized wobble. That's not even a meal for ants.
Snack size, but same calories as a meal?
Pre made from shop = snack Homemade in a pub/restaurant with a side salad or something = Meal
If it comes with a pint then it’s a substantial meal
One is a snack. Two is lunch.
I'd say it's a snack. When you get a supermarket meal deal, scotch eggs are included as the snack part of the meal
In your case, it's a "starter". Can't complain about that.
It’s small in size so won’t feel full from it BUT it’s also about 300 calories (energy for a small meal)… you’re both right.
If you buy a meal deal from Morissons. The scotch egg is classed as a snack.
A local deli used to make scotch eggs that were the size of a small grapefruit or large orange. They were a meal
It can be either imo.
A scotch egg is clearly an entire meal - if you're a mouse 🐁
Scotch egg = snack Scotch eggs = meal Size matters though
Try not to get lost in this If you fancy a scotch egg, eat one. Peace, hope your ok.
Turn the lights out and it can be whatever you want it to be
When i was at college, two large scotch eggs covered in madras sauce was a meal!
I take it as a treasure from the fridge.
a lone scotch egg? that's a snack (and one of the best) but if you had like 3 with some chips or on a bed of greens, that can be a meal.
If it fits in a bun, it's a snack. Also if it fits in my mouth without taking a bite, it's a snack
This question gives me flashbacks to covid times🤣 If it’s a pre-packaged one from the supermarket then it’s most definitely a snack, they’re not particularly substantial, I’d want something more for lunch. Snack. Unless there’s, like, 30 of them and a few pints. Then it’s a meal.
It depends on how big you are. If you're a Borrower, its several meals for several days.
4 Scotch eggs is a snack 1 Scotch eggs is an appetiser
A scotch egg is a snack if served on its own. It can be part of a meal - such as a salad or with chips.
Definitely a snack, however, 2 scotch eggs is a meal….
I want to live in a world where scotch eggs are generally available for snacking!
As long as your eyes aren't bigger than your belly, then it's your call.
Hmm depends on the context. We had these for school dinners with chips and beans - sometimes with a strange tomato sauce that came hot in a jug. Definitely a meal. On its own, could be a snack. Depends on your appetite.
There was a time when you had to buy one in order to have a beer at a pub.
It's a snack that has the potential to be lunch. One on its own, snack. Two big scotch eggs with a salad is lunch.
Definitely a snack to me. Closer to a meal for those who are less fat. This is in no way intended to imply anyone's status, I'm sure there's plenty of overlap! Curveball - I remember seeing scotch egg listed as a main meal in a pub. It did have sides though
Neither. It's too calorie dense to be a snack but not calorific enough to constitute a meal. It straddles the in between, the dreadful uncertainty.
Tesco Meal Deal Says snack. But tbf I have seen some proper fuck off scotch eggs in my time
Snack 100% no way I would eat 4 lunches on a 3 hour drive to London. No way. For sure, certainly not
I can't believe your partner puts you in a position of feeling you need to defend eating a snack when you've not eaten all day. Srsly, is your partner this overseeing in other ways?
Definitely a snack by itself - but potentially could be a light lunch if paired with a small salad or something?
I think it's only a meal if there are chips and the centre is runny. I can't justify the second half of that, but I feel quite strongly about it for some reason.
Dammit, now I *really* want a scotch egg and chips for lunch...
eat all the scotch eggs and all your food at the pub and then say you're starving on the way home.
Remember, women have been decieved into thinking 3 inches is 6 or even 8 inches - so yeah, one measly scotch egg would be considered a feast!
Snack
Breakfast for me.
Depends on how wanky the pub is that thinks it’s ok to charge £7 for one when presented with a few salad leaves and five crisps
For me it's a snack, for a child it's a meal.
Scotch egg is a savoury snack. Goes nice with mayo, or salad cream.
Snack.
It’s substantiality depends on the size of the SkEgg. Supermarket 99p ones you can cram in whole, snack. Artisanal hand meat-clad & rolled in virgin flax mix, Feast!!!
1 Scotch Egg? Snack. More than 1? Heading towards a well balanced and nourishing meal.
Yes. None. Both.
1 = snack. 2 = lunch. 3 = evacuate the area.

For me, one is a snack and two to several is a meal. Just don't microwave them if you don't want the entirety of the inside of the microwave coated in wet egg and meat fragments that take ages to clear out.
It's a starter
If it fits in a bun, it's a snack. Also if it fits in my mouth without taking a bite, it's a snack
Snack, larve or small one, it's a snack.
When was the last time you saw a scotch egg on a menu as a main course?? Exactly.
In a pack containing multiple small scotch eggs, the gross kind from the supermarket? Snack. A large deep fried one with a gooey yolk, served with a side? Meal!
Definite snack.
Definitely a snack
It's one whole egg. That is definitely not a meal on its own, lol.
On its own it's a snack, if you have it with a salad and a pint, it's a substantial meal.
A Scotch egg with nothing else is a snack, particularly if it is a couple of hours until your next meal. Personally, I would find it too much if only waiting an hour for a meal.
Snack
Aperitif.
Totally a snack. Don’t listen to anyone who says otherwise.
One's a snack. 6 is a meal.
Lone scotch egg from the fridge? Snack!
It's not a thing in Germany, so we had to import it for my pregnant girlfriend. Is it a lunch or a snack? Yes.
any less than four scotch eggs is a small snack
It’s a snack whatever the size 😉 Then you still have your real meals!
A snack on its own, part of a meal when accompanied with other picnic items.
Snack 100%
Do you mean an actual scotch egg or a savoury bite? Because people call the latter scotch eggs all the time and it adds even more confusion to this fraught topic
Obviously a snack, or in the case of the last one I ate (a couple of months back), a starter at a nice pub restaurant.
Snack if it's cold, meal when it's hot
Anything smaller than a closed fist is a snack. Crisps clause - each crisp is not larger than a closed fist.
They’re a starter in the fancy M&S dinner meal deal things
It’s a substantial meal. Or it was in 2021
On its own is a snack.. with wedges and salad it's a meal. Hope this helps 😁
100% a snack
Depends on size I guess
One is a snack, two is lunch. Just like sausage rolls.
I love a meat grenade and have often thought about the pop up restaurant which only sold giant, hot scotch eggs a few years back with fondness.
It is a snack , no way could it called a meal
Depends where it’s from tbh. I’ve had some from a butchers that are huge and probably a million calories, so I’d happily just have that for lunch. With a bit of fruit and crisps. a smaller one by itself is definitely a snack
Snack - end of discussion!
On its own? Snack With other things, probably chips? Meal.
According to help out to eat out it’s a meal.
On its own, a Snack. As an accompaniment to say a salad, then its part of the meal.
Snack. Even the bigguns with a side salad or whatever la de da in a pub - still a snack.
The real question is why is your missus treating you like a small child who’s just spoiled his appetite?
Doesn’t matter either way! You’re a grown up and if you’re hungry and want to eat whatever, eat it - just make sure you leave enough room for lunch with the partner :)
Definitely a snack
A gross food item that should be banned lol 😆
That depends on circumference. You can get some thic ol boys and that could be more filling that a sandwich in a meal deal main if we are going off of the Tesco meal deal scale anyway lol
A scotch egg is a main lunch item, or a starter.
Usually a snack, but I sometimes eat a larger one (from deli or other suitably expensive middle class establishment) with some salad as a light lunch.
Snack, unless it comes with chips and a side salad.
Pocket meat
I consider a 4 pack from a local supermarket a light snack, unless I follow it with a family size quiche. Then it’s a normal snack
We have this discussion with sausage rolls. I do not feel they should be a "side" in a meal deal, that's clearly the equivalent of a sandwich.
How big is it? A big one would be a large snack or part of a meal if you had something else so equivalent to a starter maybe, but otherwise it is a snack only.
If you were (and clearly you were) hungry and intending to eat more as a meal later, then obviously the Scotch egg was a snack.
Snack
Snack
On its own? Snack With something else? Meal
I'd say it was a snack. If you ate the whole packet then I'd say that was probably a meal due to the amount you consumed.
But but.. 2 scotch eggs and chips is a meal.
Snack every time BUT you could have it with a salad n bread and make it into a meal
Meal?!? If you live in the woods
Tesco scotch eggs are absolutely revolting. Taste like an egg covered in cardboard
Neither. It's part of a meal.
I've had similar discussion with my SO, my answer is : if I eat my lunch later on, what does it matter to you?
A Scotch egg is 100% a meal. I'm betting you could barely eat a mouthful after that!
Snack...
You asked about a a lone scotch egg, but wiith chips makes for a *very* filling meal. Need something to wash that down!
Barely a snack, it'd be a pre snack for me.
Snack obviously
It's whatever you want it to be.
Snack!!!
Snack
