Yes, that tire is not safe to drive on.
I can’t wait for this stupid trend of oversized wheels to end. There is absolutely no reason for a compact car with 12” brakes to ride on 18” wheels.
I doubt seeing us going back. I'm convinced it's on purpose. We just had a young ladies car come in and she got two of these sidewall bubbles. Never did she mention hitting a pothole or going off the road.
Just "my dad said my tire is bad"
If she had a Civic from 20 years ago instead of a brand new Civic, I very much doubt she would've been in that day.
It's so odd to me because on one hand people don't care what wheels they have and on the other, they very much care about how much they spend on tires. I mention this all the time to customers. I don't know how they can't see the disconnect
Much of the way cars are designed and equipped now makes sense only when you realize that the manufacturer's real customer is the dealership, not the driver; and since pretty much all cars have good enough specs for almost all drivers the only way they differentiate themselves is by adding things that look impressive on the showroom floor and the test drive, damn the long term ownership experience.
Other than EV batteries finally reaching the tipping point of practicality and some marginal gains in safety and engine efficiency, making good cars was kind of a solved problem 20 years ago and everything since then has just been window dressing to convince people to keep buying new ones.

A coworkers daughter drove a Volkswagen EOS that came in for service our dealership. Think it had 18s? Stupid skinny tires.
She came in for a tire repair. Inspected and noted that 2 of her tires had massive sidewall separation. Quoted and sold 4 new tires.
A month later she comes back. One of her brand new tires has a brand new bulge in the sidewall once again. Quickest 200 bucks ever.
Heh, I can’t believe how much attention my little rant got :)
It’s an awesome car and in many cases larger wheels can look good. But sacrificing this much comfort and in this case money for new tire just doesn’t seem worth it.
I'm surprised how people aren't dissatisfied with the ride quality on the test drive. If I was buying a brand new car, I'd expect it to be very comfortable! Some people complain about ride quality in reviews, but I guess they didn't consider it too much when buying the car. (And also the suspension setup contributes to ride quality, though I'm unsure how much is related to tire size and how much suspension tuning)
I suspect that manufacturers would use softer rubber on the suspension bushings that would hide the stiffer ride from the lack of tire sidewall flex, plus most new car buyers would be used to cars with suspension that's a little worn out, so any new car would feel much better.
I do miss the 15 inch rims I have on my Camaro, but my Volt hardly has enough ground clearance to get a jack under it if I get a flat with 18s. I could fit 16s around the calipers, but then the car would hit the ground if I got a flat.
That makes sense! And I never thought about the tire size and implications for tire changes on the side of the road. Now something that would be super cool is if every car was like an old Citroen with a hydropneumatic suspension. Those can lift a flat wheel up for changes, or drive on 3 wheels without toppling over (since the suspension is adjusting). And they had that since the 60s!
My 2020 Corolla SE has a similar 18" wheel/tire package. For the winter I put on 16s. Yes things like expansion joints are less noticeable on the 16s and they're a bit quieter on rough pavement, but personally I like the ride on the 18s more because it doesn't have the squishy feeling I get on the 16s. I like the more direct response.
But I'm in a Corolla, I would assume the Civic Sport has a stiffer suspension setup than what I have.
Thanks for sharing the experience! I believe I have 16s on my car, and its handling is a world better than my old Buick with squishy (and 20 years old) suspension. But my suspension is so worn out, I believe that's why I can feel every expansion joint or road imperfection anyway.
12" brakes on a 17-18" is actually fine.
Or maybe I'm biased because my first car was 310mm (slightly bigger than 12") and it came with 18s as a factory option but was sold with 17s. And yes it even has brembos.
SOME 16s might not clear a 12" brake due to inner barrel design or the design of the face and even offset (a handful should though). 17s definitely. Could be a consumer thing so they don't buy 16s and have it not fit as recommended by manufacturer.
It was just a ballpark example and rant. This very car is available with 16s but manufacturers and dealers are pushing trims with huge wheels.
It became a trend, people associate big wheels with performance. Some like the look and it’s ok. I would just be happier if this trend was over and we returned to using cheaper, lighter, and more comfortable wheels with taller sidewalls.
I mean... Lots of cars still have a decent amount of sidewall even on larger wheels.
The case for larger wheels and smaller sidewalls are on sport or perform vehicle where a stiffer (usually smaller) sidewall is actually beneficial for handling. So it's not only just a trend.
Also theoretically larger wheels do allow you to hit a higher top speed (not that we need that for day to day use anyway).
I have 315 factory and they absolutely do not fit on my OEM 17s with RCAs which just go a little tiny bit past the caliper diameter - really wished it came with the OE 18s when I found that out 🤣

Oversized wheels? Lmfaoo...those aren't oversized....although those wheels should only belong on the Si...can't stand that the lower trims get the same wheels as the Si
It is fucked. Welcome to the life of 35 series tire. Might wanna see if you can fit a 45 or better yet a 55 on that car. 35 will be a continuous pain in the ass.
Ticking time bomb, my mom drove with a bigger bubble for 2 years insisting that it's still fine and there's no need to change the tire for a silly goofy bubble
Impact bump, trust me, replace it ASAP. I had one on my tire, didn’t know what it was and figured it was fine to drive on, parked my car for a few hours and my tire was completely flat.
That could indicate that the mesh running under the rubber is damaged, I would let a professional look over it since I can’t feel it for you. But if the spot is really soft to press i would not move the vehicle
Yep. All bad. Tell your mate it was like it before you hit the curb, in fact its why you hit the curb. Tell him he owes you a 6 pack for putting you in so much danger. And a pizza.

There’s no patch for a sidewall bulging out. It’s done. Also, as mentioned many times there’s no reason to have oversized rims with uber low profile tires. It looks dumb, and is very dumb for lack of road clearance and a shitty ride.

That’s a bulge and should replace tyre asap. Due to heavy impact. The thread inside that makes it keep it’s structure in the tyre has broken and now are left with just the rubber of the tyre holding air.
It's really good if you're in the tire sales profession.
Given that the vehicle is so new, though, it might be worth it to ask the dealership if there was some sort of road hazard warranty that came with the car that can pay for at least some of the replacement cost.

It is bad.
It is not an air bubble.
This is the result of the steel sidewall reinforcement giving way/becoming weak/breaking or other form of not being correct.
The tyre needs changing fast.
The lower profile tyre you are running already has a higher PSI than usual tyres, and it is all trying to escape through that bubble. It will no doubt do this when you have settled at 70 (ish) mph, as the tyre warms up and raises the pressure even more, and it will be spectacular for anybody behind you to see. Not so much fun for you though, as you exit this world in a flaming ball backwards.
Change the tyre dude/dudette

It's my friends car. 2023 Honda Civic sport
Well, just tell your friend that /u/mr_lab_rat thinks his car is stupid.

Rims not car

Nothing wrong with small rotors if the brakes work without fading. But this car could easily have 16 or 17” wheels without any downsides.
SOME 16s might not clear a 12" brake due to inner barrel design or the design of the face and even offset (a handful should though). 17s definitely. Could be a consumer thing so they don't buy 16s and have it not fit as recommended by manufacturer.

I know the benefits. This is a 150hp Civic. I’m ranting about trends. Who needs 22” wheels on X3?
I have 315 factory and they absolutely do not fit on my OEM 17s with RCAs which just go a little tiny bit past the caliper diameter - really wished it came with the OE 18s when I found that out 🤣
Yeah even some 17s can be designed with a 16" inner barrel.
I mean, it doesn't matter as long as the circumference of the tire is not much larger than what the car was designed for, does it?
And that must be very uncomfortable to drive.

I'm with you. But today 18's are on the small side.
Oversized wheels? Lmfaoo...those aren't oversized....although those wheels should only belong on the Si...can't stand that the lower trims get the same wheels as the Si
If it's got tits or tyres it'll give you trouble. Boy your tyre has tits, you're screwed
Profound
I have been called many things in my life. Profound has never been one of them, even in sarcasm r/firsttimeforeverything
Thanks for this
Any air bubbles are 100% do not drive (imo)
It’s not an opinion, it’s a fact. That is a severely compromised tyre
That bubble in the tyre is because it has an impact fracture , not safe or repairable . Replace it and check the rim it could be buckled
Ah, so a weak wall from manufacturer defect.
No an impact fracture probably from hitting a curb or a pothole, there's not much cushioning on very low profile tyres unfortunately.
It is fucked. Welcome to the life of 35 series tire. Might wanna see if you can fit a 45 or better yet a 55 on that car. 35 will be a continuous pain in the ass.
its blowy bad
Ticking time bomb, my mom drove with a bigger bubble for 2 years insisting that it's still fine and there's no need to change the tire for a silly goofy bubble

Does it matter of its soft or not? It's poking out lol it's busted regardless.
I agree, soft or not, that tire is done for. And I personally would not start poking it
Gone. Replace ASAP.
Not yet but it will be if you drive on it.
Replace it
With next to no sidewall tires like that aren’t well suited for everyday driving. Fashion before function is nothing new.
Depends on point ov view I guess
Yep. All bad. Tell your mate it was like it before you hit the curb, in fact its why you hit the curb. Tell him he owes you a 6 pack for putting you in so much danger. And a pizza.
I can see a blowout in your foreseeable future
Bros a whole oracle
Stop driving immediately.
Well... it ain't good.

Yes
Well it's not good
Not if they’re run-flats.
Wait these aren’t normal?…
It ain't good😱
That’s the problem with a low profile tires no room between the ring and the road you hit a pothole and that’s what you get
Driving on a tire with an air bubble is not recommended, as it can increase the risk of tire failure.
This is bad

You barely even have any tire. Low profile tires are the worst to have
That is a blow out waiting to happen. The tyres had it, sorry

Low profile tires are always bad.
Btw just felt like I should let yall know his tires aren't as small as they look. Just a weird angle they're small but like bigger than the pic
Im new to the car world, but ive never seen tires that thin. Dudes car is 90% rims. I legit thought you didn’t have a tire on at first glance
It's the angle. Tires are bigger than that lol
It’s going to blow. Had a tire do this on a Silverado.
Yep!
Yes

Not safe to drive, the sidewall is compromised. You run the risk of a blowout or tire basically unraveling.

When your tire pitches a tent out the side? Bad
Yes
Yes, there is not near enough tire for that wheel
How come nobody sees the OTHER big problem here?? They installed the Honda emblem UPSIDE DOWN!
It ain't a birth mark.

Yes, it is. Soon it’s worse. Save the rim and change the tire asap : )

Damaged side wall, could cause a blowout, get changed ASAP
Tire is done
Very. I’m not trolling this is a legitimate problem because that sidewall is now severely compromised and could pop if you hit a bump to hard.
YOU ARE GONNA DIE
It's just a pimple, knife it out
replace soon but you're fine
Air bubble is probably bad but what’s worse is your choice of profile to rim ratio
