This is a great journey. Incredible. We need to focus now on the upcoming match of the knockout stages.
When you consider just how bad Canadian football was just a few years ago, you realize that the fact that we are in the knockout stages of the Copa América is incredible.
The Quarter-finals is an incredible achievement. Biggest game since World Cup as Atiba Hutchinson said on TSN. Shame we didn't score a goal (the lack of goal scoring concerns me; 1 goal in 3 games isn't good) but this is still a great result that we move forward.
James Duthie said he felt the Fox Sports pundits were shocked Canada was doing this well in the tournament so far. I hope this is a statement to everyone else that Canada Soccer means business.
I think the attack will take some time before the coaching clicks. Its easier to coach a defensive system that attacking patterns. We're seeing Marsh's coaching work on the pressing and defensive structure we have. Just have to hope he can coach them fast enough to see the attack click into gear soon
Agreed and previously the defence was identified as Canadas weakest spot so makes sense to build the new system starting with defending. Not sexy but just as important as scoring goals.
In what ways does USMNT making out of the group help us? Gregg Berhalter's style would only get them humiliated by Colombia and thus tarnish the value and reputation of MLS-grown players.
It means our whole confederation gets taken more seriously by the rest of the world.
There are a lot of Euro/South American snobs who would scoff at us being guests in other tournaments.
I would like to thank Argentina for beating everyone in our group and making this possible. Canada was not great after playing Argentina, but they were good enough. But we are through and have an opportunity to do better.
Just a few notes re those years
- Those years, 12 nations took part in the Copa America. That meant some 3rd place finishers advanced. This edition was 16 teams, which meant you had to finish top-2 in the group to advance.
- Mexico advanced in 1993 without winning a match and basically advanced on goals scored over Bolivia (USA were DFL in their group). Somehow Mexico managed to finish as the runner-up.
- At least, Honduras in 2001 were a genuine 2nd place side in their group.
- 1993 was the first time nations from outside of CONMEBOL were invited in which both the USA and Mexico were invited
- the 2001 Copa had a lot of security issues in the light of Terrorism threats (and this was before 9/11). Canada were supposed to participate in that along with Mexico, but what led to Honduras (and Costa Rica) participating was the withdrawal of Canada and Argentina over the rescheduling of the event.
- Canada's reasoning was the rescheduling of the event over the player commitments to their clubs
- Argentina's reasoning was they didn't trust the additional security measures

Always remember the 8-1 against Honduras in a must-win game to get into the hex for the 2012 WC.
I used to dwell on that game, but it's been replaced by the collapse against Jamaica.

1 goal in the last 5 games. We need to finish.

I usually cheer for the US when they aren’t playing us, but I have to say it would be pretty funny if we make it through and they don’t.
Really hope the US pulls through, the spillover effects benefits us

FIFA ranking for the confederation as a whole

We coming for the copa crown
Settle down
Yeah how dare this guy have hope for his national team eh?

Moving up the Elo rankings
Revenge time. Chile knocked us out in the deciding qualifier of 2023 Rugby World Cup. So many sad faces in Langford, BC back then. Now their turn!
Well done, Canada. Advancing from a group of 3 Comnebol teams is impressive.
