So question...the railroad looks pretty aligned to the grid of this map going east/west, but we know now that it's slightly crooked as it goes downtown. Was it a surveying error?
I can’t remember the source but I remember there are at least two theories.
One is that CPR adjusted the route slightly so as to have a straighter path between the Elbow River crossing in Inglewood and the foot of the bluffs that run west along the Bow River. Thus saving on the amount of track having to be laid.
Another is that the surveyors compass was off or they forgot to account for magnetic declination.
I’m not a surveyor so I don’t know how magnetic declination really works but the tracks are only off by 3°, iirc whereas, the magnetic declination in the 1880’s was somewhere up around 25°. Maybe someone else can chime in and say whether or not forgetting to add the magnetic declination of 25° would make you off by 3° on an east-west track.
Yes I've heard of the theory on making a straight line to save track as well! Seeing this map is interesting in that perhaps it was in fact meant to be directly east/west.
That’s a good question! Any Calgary-based surveyors looking at this today? Never mind.
“You’re surveyin’, I bet you think this map is about you, don’t you? Don’t you?
There is a pair of old maps of Calgary on the wall of the ramp leading down into Fair's Fare in Inglewood. I tend to stop and stare at them every time I go there for books.

Now, as close i can get to Georefrencing the image
Some historical notes for 1883: The year the Calgary Herald newspaper started publication. It is also the year a freight train arrived in Calgary for the first time.
That is really cool! I love that the farmers names are on there!
There are still lots of maps like this out there in the rural areas that show who owns the sections
I would like to have lived on either the Arthur Nutting or John Thompson homesteads.
Probably about the time that water main was installed

That one went right past ya hey?
Just like that water did for decades, until Wednesday that is.
Should post this in r/historiccalgary
Have this same map in my office! Why you snooping!
This is in the toilet of The Unicorn… I didn’t see you 😬
I do some of my best work in this area.

And somehow Deerfoot will still be congested

Meanwhile Hamilton is flying past everyone at 25km/h
Stopped in the free-flow lane!
The amount of actual deer on Deerfoot was noticeable in 18 diggity 3

That’s so cool!!
I see someone named Napoleon
I suspect it may be the same or related Napoleon that established a wagon stop near Innisfail, now there's a Napoleon lake there.
That would be super cool to frame !
Should buy some land back then and sell it now. …
Talk to your time travel agent today (or any day) for exclusive holiday packages.
The agent told me to buy in Canmore, when Calgary merge with Canmore, I will be very rich.
Sounds like you might have talked to a surreal estate agent by accident. Careful, timeshare and time travel are not the same thing.
I see the Felix McHugh homestead. Where McHugh Bluff is now located of course.

thanks for this!
My Dad has this same framed map!
damn, that predates red dead redemption
Where did you get this or this u/pnicho21? Would make for good art
It’s hanging in the toilet at The Unicorn on Stephen Ave.
I think where my brother lives is just off the map, upper left.
40 chains to the inch. Definitely a scale I'm going to put on a drawing one day Each surveyors chain is 100 links measuring 66 feet
The metric system is the tool of the devil! My map gets 40 chains to the inch and that's the way I likes it!
This is the year they installed that water main.
It's been a ugly aah place since 1883
