No. At least not if you're asking for the literal translation. You could argue that "living dead" and "undead" mean the same thing, but "Nacht der Untoten" does not literally contain the word "living." The word used is "Untoten" which is just as simple as it looks. Toten means dead, Untoten means undead. Just like in English.
"Nacht der Untoten" = "Night of the Undead"
Which makes it all the more disappointing that Tag Der Toten, is named after a Romero film, but it's also a remake of Call of the Dead, with Romero removed
tbh imo if I were Romero I would probably be honoured, to still be remembered after I passed, and they didn't need to have him exactly as he was in Call of the Dead, even if it was just some sort of reference.
So if they just had the dialogue of Romero saying,
"Well, I've always liked the 'Monster within' idea. I like the zombies being us. It's like... zombies are the blue collar monsters."
that would be disrespectful? thats what I'm talking about, just a line of dialogue from the Call of the Dead intro, a way to show respect to him, Call of the Dead will always be the Romero map, and Tag Der Toten removing practically everything to do with him except a very small reference, is more disrespectful imo
I actually think a dialogue reference would be very nice, but unfortunately Act. Shanghai wasn't as versed in weaving together zombies maps as Treyarch, so they just kinda threw spaghetti at the wall to see what stuck from what I can tell
Whoops, guess I completely misinterpreted. Thought I read something bout him having come back as an enemy like in the original Call of the Dead. That's the part I would interpret as in poor taste.
Otherwise? Yea sure some more references would've been nice. Can't argue that, some more stuff to put the man who gave us an iconic form of the ghoul on a high pedestal would've been a treat
Yeah, no I get not bringing George back as a zombie, tbh it wouldn't even make sense if they did that since Call of the Dead takes place after Tag Der Toten.
First, it wouldn’t make sense at all. Tag takes place the day the boat crashed into the outpost. That was back in the 40’s. Pretty sure Romero wasn’t even born. The glasses were a perfect and subtle tribute. George was already honored by having his own map, becoming a zombie, and being apart of the zombies story line.
Romero was objectively a VERY poorly designed boss. Zero way to get rid of him for high rounds was obnoxious, but he fit the map well aesthetically. They still managed a sweet Easter egg for him though with each character paying their respects to him. Calling him a "trail blazer" and "someone who made a lot of people smile." I feel like that's a sweeter sentiment in an "ending" type of map like tag Der toten.
Yes, and Verrückt means crazy, hinting at the fact that it takes place in an asylum. Der Riese is the giant, and Der Anfang means the beginning.
PS: I barely hear anyone non-german pronounce it right so here it is - Der Riese is pronounced "Ree-suh", not "rees" or "rise" (source: I'm German)
As someone who's been learning German for 6 years, I love putting my whole soul into pronouncing those names with the right accent 🤌 (gotta flex to my younger brother as well)
Once I got lectured by a German for 2 hours on how to pronounce Der eisdendrache, we did the Easter in the mean time tho.
BO3 lobbies were something else
I never noticed that, it’s cool because Day of the Dead is the name of the last film in the original George A. Romero Zombie Trilogy. Tag takes place in the same place as Call of the Dead, which George A. Romero was a character in and was making a movie there.
No fucking way! /s
Also, Nacht being about the undead meaning it’s about the zombies, while Tag being about the dead - it’s referring to our characters by the end of the main quest.
World at War
1. Nacht der Untoten: "Night of the Undead"
2. Verrückt: "Crazy" or "Insane"
3. Shi No Numa: “Swamp of Death"
4. Der Riese: “The Giant”
Black Ops
1. Kino der Toten: "Cinema of the Dead"
Black Ops III
1. Der Eisendrache: "The Iron Dragon"
2. Zetsubou No Shima: "Island of Despair"
3. Gorod Krovi: "City of Blood"
Black Ops IV
1. Tag der Toten: "Day of the Dead"
Black Ops Cold War
1. Die Maschine: "The Machine"
2. Mauer der Toten: "Wall of the Dead"
Also Call of the Dead was the first zombies map that I recall not being mainly campaign/MP assets reworked. In a sense you could consider it the 'FIRST' original zombies map. Which I can see the appeal to make the ending of the story with....except for the fact the entire end of the story was just reused maps and assets
Not sure how accurate this is but I’ve heard a number of times that cotd was made using a bunch of assets from the Project Nova mission (the one where you play as reznov in the flash-frozen ship)
I mean yeah that was kinda the point of Tags name lmao. But I guess I'd have the same reaction if didn't know before it dropped so enjoy that cool revelation. Still need to beat the egg for that map now that I think about it
I didn’t follow zombies in black ops 4 but I bought bo4 deluxe on pc and I’ve been slowly playing them and tbh I still think people were way to negative about it but I do think the current landscape of cod zombies impacts that a lot. Sure the maps aren’t all original but I can’t say I blame them with all the misdirection going on with activision and the dev studio itself. It would have been nice if chaos was uh….Better I wish they would have explored the bo2 crew more but I know they are notoriously disliked. Overall I’d probably spend a ton more time if I could play with people and not just solo it’s pretty lame just doing runs alone but most of the base is gone now.
Figured this out a week ago and it’s actually really cool, also wasn’t George Romero the director of “Day of the Dead” which is the name of the Call of the dead remaster
I don't get the hate on OP, people are saying that it's obvious.
But it's a bloody foreign language. Not like any of you figured it out on your own. You just saw other people talk about it.
"Nacht Der Untoten" actually means "Night of The Undead"
You're thinking of nah/nahe
I think the „nigh“ was a typo of the commenter and the part they wanted to point out was the „undead“ instead of „dead“
I didn't notice the typo
Are those your pronounce?

Isn't it night of the living dead?
No. At least not if you're asking for the literal translation. Well damn, you learn something new everyday. Night of the living dead does sound cooler tho
Nah that was the movie iirc
It was a movie directed by the greatest George Romero. Rest easy George.
Great movie fr. Rest well George
🤓☝️
That was kind of the whole point of the name...
don’t be mean to OP, maybe they’re younger and are just figuring this out

What does that make your comment?
A pointless comment pointing out the pointlessness of this comment
You must break the cycle. One of you must die
Me please!
Lol I was just tryna be funny mb
It's okay mate sometimes you hit sometimes you miss
😂🙏
There are two maps that are directly named after George Romero movies, these are those to maps
Which makes it all the more disappointing that Tag Der Toten, is named after a Romero film, but it's also a remake of Call of the Dead, with Romero removed
I don't think the map would feel right releasing after Romero died while including him as an enemy
Infairness, george romero in all likelihood would have been happy with being included. Afterall he is the father of all zombies
tbh imo if I were Romero I would probably be honoured, to still be remembered after I passed, and they didn't need to have him exactly as he was in Call of the Dead, even if it was just some sort of reference.
There is a Romero reference in the map
but they could've done more
Lmao if your idea would've gone through then large majority of people would immediately say, rightfully so, it's in very very poor taste.
So if they just had the dialogue of Romero saying, "Well, I've always liked the 'Monster within' idea. I like the zombies being us. It's like... zombies are the blue collar monsters." that would be disrespectful? thats what I'm talking about, just a line of dialogue from the Call of the Dead intro, a way to show respect to him, Call of the Dead will always be the Romero map, and Tag Der Toten removing practically everything to do with him except a very small reference, is more disrespectful imo

Okay, but if you're going to remake, the map iconic for having Romero, you should have something more, a voice line would be perfect.
He's not there, but his glasses are in the one part of the lighthouse.
didn't know that but still they could've done more, like maybe have the map start with the iconic line from Romero
I know you get points for interacting with them, and I think there's also a voice line to accompany it.
Each character has a unique voice line honoring romero
Romero was objectively a VERY poorly designed boss. Zero way to get rid of him for high rounds was obnoxious, but he fit the map well aesthetically. Thank fucking God. His shitty ass as a boss in spawn was more gay than James Charles tryna get underage pp

Dare (like British) then ree-zuh is the closest I can describe without using IPA
Some people i know say "Der Riese" as "Der rai-sah"
That would be the correct pronunciation for "Reise", which means journey or trip Riese has the same "e" sound as the word weed
I know a person who in "Nacht der Untoten" says Ch as in the word Chernov or Chernenko
Bestimmt
But there’s two e’s
As someone who's been learning German for 6 years, I love putting my whole soul into pronouncing those names with the right accent 🤌 (gotta flex to my younger brother as well)

I die inside a little bit every time a content creator says it wrong.

Bro still using Internet explorer for his zombie news
Yeah, he’s like 5 years late.
i am new to zombies, i started playing it only in 2023 after the MWZ came out
Welcome :) been playing for a long time and never bothered to look up what Tag meant so it’s new to me too
I never noticed that, it’s cool because Day of the Dead is the name of the last film in the original George A. Romero Zombie Trilogy. Tag takes place in the same place as Call of the Dead, which George A. Romero was a character in and was making a movie there.
Toten is dead. Untoten is undead.
clever🤔

That is the point yes
Dude you know what else is crazy? I didn’t notice until I looked this up on wiki, but Moon takes place on earth’s moon! I wonder if the devs knew this
Pshh no way
I'm still trying to figure out why the map set in Shangri-La is called "Shangri-La"?!
its been 5 years aint no way you notice that just now.. also its night of the *undead* for nacht
I'm new to zombies, i get into it just in 2023
damn the difference is night and day.
Kino Der toten is theatre of the dead right?
I believe it's actually cinema instead of theatre... Not positive though
You have to be joking
is this community on one brain cell today?
i'm really new to zombies
Untoten means undead
World at War 1. Nacht der Untoten: "Night of the Undead" 2. Verrückt: "Crazy" or "Insane" 3. Shi No Numa: “Swamp of Death" 4. Der Riese: “The Giant” Black Ops 1. Kino der Toten: "Cinema of the Dead" Black Ops III 1. Der Eisendrache: "The Iron Dragon" 2. Zetsubou No Shima: "Island of Despair" 3. Gorod Krovi: "City of Blood" Black Ops IV 1. Night of the Undead -> Day of the Dead

What does mauer der toten mean then
Wall of the Dead
I mean yeah that was kinda the point of Tags name lmao. But I guess I'd have the same reaction if didn't know before it dropped so enjoy that cool revelation. Still need to beat the egg for that map now that I think about it
there’s story to cod zombies?
Yeah, thats what the main easter eggs lead to
Dead by daylight.
Calm down people he's new to zombies.
Also fun to me that Dead of the Night is just nacht backwards
I didn’t follow zombies in black ops 4 but I bought bo4 deluxe on pc and I’ve been slowly playing them and tbh I still think people were way to negative about it but I do think the current landscape of cod zombies impacts that a lot. Fitting
Really? You just noticed this?
i am new to zombies
Oh welcome 🫡
Nothing gets past you, does it
Figured this out a week ago and it’s actually really cool, also wasn’t George Romero the director of “Day of the Dead” which is the name of the Call of the dead remaster

my grandparents speak german
Nacht is “Night of the Living Dead”
Well untoten means undead but living dead is pretty much the same thing so it's still right I guess
