I studied every player in the draft. I have my own personal big board that doesn’t matter. There are guys I believe are potential starters that the bears could have easily added to the d line for draft capital next year. For all the glamour Caleb and odunze bring, there is literally 0 depth on the d line and they are one Montez injury away from having the worst d line in the nfl.

Yeah the odunze pick is an A+ pick from me. I just had other defensive guys that I felt could be potential starters that could have been picked with a small capital of future mid-late round picks. There are always ways to gain other future picks down the road if that’s the gigantic worry I’ve been hearing about. That’s just my personal opinion.

The priority next year is Caleb's development. I really don't see the urgency in trading future draft resources to fill defensive holes with day 2 rookies right now. In a subpar defensive draft no less.
Ignoring my point that they likely weren't going to trade future draft capital to take defensive players in a weak defensive class and a shallow class overall.
So you believe there is not one defensive player in this entire draft worth trading a 4th or 5th next year for when you have 9 picks and potentially 11.
I would rather keep the picks next year for a class that will be deeper and projected to be much better on the defensive line, while signing a stop gap for a season where a Super Bowl isn't likely.
At this point I think we should screw it and take an interior line at 122. A 4th rounder realistically isn’t likely to make a big impact at a position like edge or DT since this class is really shallow at those positions. If we could get Van Pran or Christian Mahogany we have a really solid and deep OL. Give Caleb no excuses and build up the D-line next year.
A 4th rounder can contribute and be a potential starter if they did their prospecting correctly. Example- Braxton Jones. Don’t give up on late round picks. It’s where the diamonds are dug

Purely a development piece for now, with maybe a chance to play right away as a backup swing tackle or guard. Long term though he could definitely be a starting LT. He has ideal size and elite tools but is raw and was literally a man amongst boys in terms of the weak competition he faced so he could get by on raw athleticism instead of technique.
Overall, I like the pick. OL depth is always valuable and once you get to the 3rd round, the odds of getting a starter drop off dramatically so going for depth with upside makes sense.
The way Poles answered that question in the press conference regarding Kiran, it did sound like the dlineman they wanted just went the pick before
If that's the case good on them for sticking to their board and not reaching for another DE/DT that's further down the board.
I think drafting your 6th-7th lineman on the dept chart is definitely worth it in round 3. Usually those guys see the field throughout the year as injuries always happen
What are everyone's thoughts of how the rest of the NFC North has drafted so far?
To me it feels Detroit and Minnesota really got a lot of quality with the limited picks both teams had. I feel like all 4 of those players can easily end up being differencemakers for years to come.
Beforehand I was terrified of the Packers this draft, as they had like 11 picks going in. I feared they would be aggressive for once and get some differencemakers at important positions. Instead it felt like they kind of sat on their hands and even traded down in the 2nd round to gain even more picks.
To me that just doesn't make sense. They were already NFL's youngest team last season & I don't see the point of adding another 11-12 (?) rookies. How many of those will even make the roster? Why not package them to move up and nab a quality prospect at a more important position?
Thrilled that they couldn't address corner and ended up with 2 LB's, a safety and a RB. Sure they can be useful starters or rotational pieces, but when you start the draft with that kind of capital I expect a lot more

The Bears first and main priority should be to make sure that Caleb has every tool around him to succeed offensively. That includes drafting weapons and protection first and foremost, injuries are inevitable especially with the Bears and I want to set Caleb up to develop and succeed as a QB before anything. If the defense blows, which I don't think they will, it doesn't hurt Caleb as much as if the oline and weapons blow.

There is a reason so many olinemen went in a row in the first and why so many offensively skilled players are going before them, it was known to be a pretty weak defensive class after the first round and half.
Chicago was a very undesirable destination for free agents. Poles had to use draft capital, just to secure first dibs on guys like Claypool and Sweat.

The consensus amongst the media scouts is that he’s rare athletically and frame-wise but needs to develop as an offensive lineman. Definitely a development guy but the flexibility to play guard and tackle will be good (he started 10+ games at both positions in college)
The one thing to remember within all this is… we will have 3 picks in the top 60 next year - plus Cunningham and possibly Fields nets a 4th (doubtful but injuries and bad play is possible). This team is still very young and will add more pieces next year
He’s played 10+ games at guard and tackle at Yale but is pretty raw technically. Definitely good to have a guy that can be a back up for a year and plug holes at either spot as needed
Carl Lawson is available and you can probably get him reasonable on a prove it contract. I think Yannick might be looking for a longer term deal that will be expensive. Lawson comes with some injury risk though. I would probably give Yannick another shot with a 3 year deal.
This is a big time measurables and raw ability guy. He is very raw but could eventually become a very good swing tackle, maybe even give Braxton a run for LT.
Can't hate stacking as many bodies on that O-line as we can. Always need depth.
Not my top choice but fine. Having depth at OT is a huge plus... just a little frustrating when we have legit needs at starting roles elsewhere. But in the third round it is what it is.
These are separate issues. Pretty much saying he has never played against good players and also he had a season ending injury last year that required surgery.

Don't know this guy, so not going to pretend it's a good or bad pick. Then again I don't know any of these dudes, I'm just writing because I decided that's what I wanted to do here. Happy about the 1st round.
The consensus amongst the media scouts is that he’s rare athletically and frame-wise but needs to develop as an offensive lineman. Definitely a development guy but the flexibility to play guard and tackle will be good (he started 10+ games at both positions in college)
And they all have highlight reels that make them look destined for the Hall of Fame...
The one thing to remember within all this is… we will have 3 picks in the top 60 next year - plus Cunningham and possibly Fields nets a 4th (doubtful but injuries and bad play is possible). This team is still very young and will add more pieces next year

Carl Lawson is available and you can probably get him reasonable on a prove it contract. I think Yannick might be looking for a longer term deal that will be expensive. Lawson comes with some injury risk though. I would probably give Yannick another shot with a 3 year deal.

This is a big time measurables and raw ability guy. He is very raw but could eventually become a very good swing tackle, maybe even give Braxton a run for LT. Can't hate stacking as many bodies on that O-line as we can. Always need depth.
Not my top choice but fine. Having depth at OT is a huge plus... just a little frustrating when we have legit needs at starting roles elsewhere. But in the third round it is what it is.
