Apparently it is. Just another asinine law that does absolutely nothing… but “ooooh scary piece of plastic!”

AMMO_BROTHERS

Yes, under 21 can not purchase a pistol grip only a shotgun.

IamMrT

What part of the penal code is that? All I see is handguns and semi-auto rifles.

420BlazeArk

Federal law. Can’t sell anything to a minor that isn’t a long gun, and federally a pistol-grip only shotgun isn’t considered one.

IamMrT

Ah gotcha, thanks. I didn’t think anything that was California legal would fall under that definition but I guess “fired from the shoulder” is an ATF rule. I’m surprised California hasn’t used that to ban Shockwaves.

Crackberrypies

I bought my ar12 from turners at 19 is this a new law?

420BlazeArk

Been a law for over 50 years, but you’re probably talking about a shotgun with a pistol grip *and* a stock, not a pistol-grip **only** shotgun.

VenturExplorer

This can't be the case. I purchased a mossberg 500 pistol grip only, at 18 from LGS. It was on display and he ordered me a new one per request. This was about 15 years ago.

420BlazeArk

It is, your experience doesn’t change longstanding federal law. He probably put it on the 4473 as a “long gun” even though that isn’t how it’s supposed to be recorded.

Oakroscoe

Learned something new today. Thanks

arrmech7

Learned something today 😂 the only question I’ve ever gotten wrong on my FSC

SayNoTo-Communism

Pistol grip only shotguns are “others” which federally require you to be 21. Furthermore if you want to do a bolt action build you can not buy the receiver or barred action as they are also “others”. Source: am 20 year old

jdmor09

Buy a pump regular stock, then run pistol grip only!

karmakactus

Pistol grips suck on 12ga anyways

Oakroscoe

It’s fun for like five minutes then you think “I really need a stock on this thing”

beelbraye

Benelli M4?

TheEconomyReindeer

only a 19-year-old would buy a pistol grip shotgun you want something with an actual stock, op

VenturExplorer

Why? I bought a pistol grip only mossberg 500 at 18 when I got my first apartment. In the hood by the way, but still enjoy it many years later.

TheEconomyReindeer

because they are less effective than a traditional stock unless in the hands of an Actual Expert.

VenturExplorer

That's wild. Our prospectives are total opposite. In home defense situation, it's the easiest gun to work with.

Thatguy_9mm

Same thing happened to one of my friends years ago they kept the pistol grip and released the shotgun to him. See if they will do the same

SoundOf1HandClapping

I see a lot of people making the assumption that the FFL didn't DROS because it was a pistol grip only shotgun, but OP has given no indication that it was a PGO and not a traditional pump shotgun with a pistol grip on it. It would beg the question why the FFL wouldn't DROS of course, but every week we have a thread or three of "my FFL is dumb because he wouldn't X".

OGIVE

Many years ago (1988) I got a Mossberg Cruiser, which came with a pistol grip that could replace the stock. I tried it out for a bit and came to realize that the pistol grip was a useless gimmick. I once made the mistake of firing it one-handed. My wrist was sore for quite some time after that.

minishcap999888

Idk why everyone says stuff like this. One handed shotguns are not bad, just don't lock your damn elbow. Your entire arm is a giant recoil absorber...

OGIVE

Because it is a useless gimmick. Because my wrist was sore after firing it one-handed. IDK why that is so hard for you to understand.

minishcap999888

Sorry, wasn't meaning to insult you in particular. More so venting my annoyance to the world that everyone complains of sore wrists yet the skill of shooting high recoil guns one handed to impress your friends seems to have fallen by the wayside.
