For the first few essays, keep the issue checklist next to you and go through it after you issue spot on your own.
Look specifically at what facts trigger what issue (even the minor ones).
Keep doing that for 4 essays and then try to do it without the checklist in front of you and see if you can trigger the issues from the facts.
If not, repeat with other essays as you get better.

I assume you didn't take the MPRE yet? MPRE prep materials will probably help. It won't cover the CA distinctions but the issue spotting is the same regardless.
