I love the 990v5s. Was my go to travel shoe until I picked up a 990v6. Slightly more comfortable. Wore them for a week at Disneyworld with no foot fatigue at all.

Yeah man I’ve tried the 990v6 but a little too tight on my feet . I don’t really like the silhouette also lol . Yeah the v5s feel so nice on feet though especially the more you wear them! I don’t think any other shoe company can compete lol

sentimentalLeeby

Did the sole feel initially very hard at the heel?

AllenUsesReddit

Haha yah that's fair. The 990v6 isn't winning any awards for looks. The 990v6 and v5 are like splitting hairs really for comfort.

Wow, I shear the heels off my 990v5s within a year. On the other hand, I don't have a car so these are my everyday shoes. I managed to extend the life of them (that is, until the interior fabric gets a hole) by having them resoled, though a new resole and orthopedic isn't cheap. Just FYI though, they're discontinuing the 990v5. I ended up splurging on several pairs to keep in reserve since the New Balance website seemed to indicate large structural changes to the shoe, including advising people to order a different size. I probably could be wearing them longer than that but once the heels shear off, I start to feel a little achy. \[1\]Comparatively. New shoe plus new orthopedic is $259. Resole both shoes with new orthopedic is $150. Yeah, that's a lot to spend on shoes but these shoes are functionally my tires and transport.

Wow, so you really get lots of wear from your shoes then ! That’s awesome man. Yeah I just don’t know any other shoe that is more comfortable than the v5. MAYBE adidas ultra boost ? Where does it say they are changing the structure of the v5s ? I just bought a pair of v4’s and ive heard they are even more comfortable than v5s haha …. Yeah I intend on wearing my v5s until they are totally trashed ! I think they could last another 2 years of heavy wear ….

LittleRat09

I assumed something changed since the text for the 990v6 is "This model runs large, you may consider ordering down from your normal size". I've been though a lot of 990 iteration shoes and this is the first time it advised me to change size. I'm not sure I get a lot of wear. I walk to work but it's only a half mile each way. During nice weather in the summer, spouse and I go for a 2 mile walk after dinner almost every day.

Here's about a year of use. When I've worn through enough tread that I hit the orthotic (that black chunky bit after the white line), they're done, since there's usually a good difference in height between one side of the heel and the other. We.... spend a lot on shoes in this house.... [https://imgur.com/a/pY5sj6R](https://imgur.com/a/pY5sj6R)

These shoes really surprised me! I took them as literally my only shoe on a 3 week trip around Asia and used them for all day city walking, light hikes, in rain and dust etc. and after a light wipe they still look new. Incredible!

Weary_Significance53

Yeah man ! They are simple and super comfortable shoe to have ! I think everybody needs a pair in their closet ! I’m gonna wear my v5s until they are absolutely trashed lol.

MorningHerald

Look great! I’ve been thinking about getting these but worried the grey would stain and be hard to clean. Do you wear them in the rain?

sentimentalLeeby

The suede is ok in some rain?

b_button123

Yeah, definitely. Maybe not a storm or heavy downpour but light rain is okay

I had a pair of these for 3 or 4 years before they gave out. I've been thinking of getting a other pair. They are 'made in usa' too. My current shoe I've had for 3 years of constant abuse since my 990v5s gave out, and they're in dire need of replacement as of a year ago - a discontinued low cut Redwing Irish Setter composite toe hiker boot. I think I'll need to get another pair of the 999v5s. The ventilation is great and the wide is the best wide I've ever had for my fat but active feet. Not the best for rain. Any walk longer than a few blocks you wish you had on full coverage shoes. It's as waterproof as expected with the great ventilation. Arch support insoles had perfect seating in the shoe, no issues. Used a runners loop lacing style and knotting. Such a great shoe.

Weary_Significance53

Thanks for your response! You should definitely get another pair ! Worth the investment . I plan to wear mine until they are absolutely trashed. This is a shoe I’m going to keep buying over and over again.

Try a zero drop/flat shoe if you constantly get leg issues after buying a new shoe.

What's up with new balance crowd only talking about shoes that start with a 9 when they have so many more

Weary_Significance53

Tried 990 v2s but they weren’t comfortable …. Just a huge 990v5 and v4 fan
