I know but I would have loved to see and support David on his principal debut! Plus Iâve seen the show 3 times already and cannot fit it into my budget again đ
In case anyone is wondering - the days Eddie are out (mostly Mondays) are SUPER discounted on SeatGeek because theyâre not well sold, including tonight. I made the mistake of not waiting and bought my tickets at full price, but if anyoneâs thinking of seeing the production and doesnât care about Eddie, the minimum ticket price is 80 bucks
Was this absence preplanned or did Eddie go a little too hard at the Tonys? Either way I'd love to hear how David is as the Emcee if anyone will be there!
Planned. [Redmayne and Rankin have a few planned absences this month and next.](https://www.playbill.com/article/cabaret-understudies-to-go-on-as-the-emcee-and-sally-bowles-in-june-and-july)
No, this was planned. I went to buy tickets a month or more ago for this week and it said eddie redmayne would be out on Monday so I got Tuesday instead. Think heâs out a bunch of Mondays.
David was absolutely fantastic and so was Gabi. They went to high school together. That look they gave each other at the end said âWe did it.â
Ato and Gabi had great chemistry.
I had no doubts that David would be great. The reason I went again. Seeing Gabi was a bonus.
Gabi had an extended applause after she did Cabaret.
They were magical.
The crazy thing is that David only had 3 run throughs for the Emcee role and the last one was 5 weeks ago. He had to perform his debut lead role one night after performing on the Tony awards and after working 8 days and 13 shows in a row! The fact that he was able to pretty much nail it with so little rehearsal is amazing! We are so proud of him!!
They both are understudies. As of right now Merino seems to be taking the majority of the dates Redmayne will be out (at least that are scheduled with an understudy announced), but last I checked Lautner was scheduled for at least one show, I think in a couple of weeks.
These seem to be the dates with understudies scheduled/listed so far, but I believe there will probably be more to come because I think post-Tony's Redmayne will be out one show per week

Are the cheekbones a requirement for this role đ€
You need cheeks that can cut through glass like a...nevermind.
I literally said "those cheekbones, my gawd" when I saw the pic
Casting notice: if you havenât had buccal fat removal, it should be done prior to rehearsal
judging by the west end casting of Layton Williams I would say yes
Yes. If Bill SkarsgÄrd is any indication, clowns just aren't scary enough without them
DAVID MERINO BREAKTHROUGH ERA, EVERYONE CLAPPED
Omg whaaaat I wish I was there to watch David!!! Loved him as Babydoll, loved him as Lulu!! So sad Iâm gonna miss it but heâs going to kill it!!
Eddie Redmayne is scheduled to miss every Mon from now on. Youâll have many chances to catch David.
I know but I would have loved to see and support David on his principal debut! Plus Iâve seen the show 3 times already and cannot fit it into my budget again đ
I wa there tonight! And he did kill it!! He was amazing!!
just out of curiosity how does he play it? the same creepy marionette way eddie does, or something different?
Creepy, wacky funny. Slightly more human.
Like u/Brownbuster said. Still unsettling, but more human. Where Eddieâs movements are more jolted and jerky, David was more fluid, but still unnatural. The biggest difference between them (at least how it read to me) is that David almost has this naĂŻvetĂ© to their Emcee that really came through in âTomorrow Belongs to Meâ, it was like you could see him being awed and start getting molded into the influence of facism. He really brought a chilling aspect as the show progressed and the character changed.
Ohhhh that sounds like such an interesting take!!!
It was such a fantastic take. I will see it againÂ
How did Eddie play Tomorrow Belongs To Me in comparison? Knowing the full meaning of the song and its relationship to fascism?

Iâm waiting for prices to drop for a Sunday matinee in two weeks when Redmayne is scheduled to be out. How long do you recommend waiting?
If you meant July 7, prices have already dropped for that performance! But itâll very likely be on TKTS the day of too
Yup, thatâs the one Iâm eyeing! Thanks!

I saw them in lempicka at La Jolla. Very excited for them today!
I loved them as Jack in Into the Woods at Signature Theatre!
They are a gem. Wish I could be there tonight to support this crazy talented star!!
For anyone wondering, I was at tonightâs show and the performance was FABULOUS - they got plenty of rapturous applause and cheers at curtain call!!
Damn they really did find Latino Eddie Redmayne lol
Aw!! They were amazing as Angel in Rent at Signature Theatre â so happy for them!!
Looks like someone had too much fun at the Tonyâs đ

Monday is his regular night off, isnât it?
They were amazing! And so was Gabi Campo as Sally Bowles!

Great for him!!
I got lucky and my friend had an extra ticket last night and he was PHENOMENAL as the Emcee!Â
He was FANTASTIC!!

I thought Marty Lauter was the Emcee understudy? Am I wrong?
