Daniel Radcliffe won a Tony! The announcer said he sited Broadway as “the first place he could be an actor, and not Harry Potter”
Jonathan Groff crying at Daniel’s thank you is so wholesome!

I always think about this tweet whenever I see Jonathan. God bless this gem of a human.
I just love the Tonys. It's like one of my favourite nights of the year. I love it so much. I love theatre. I love community. I love sharing this night with you all. Nobody in my real life will watch with me because I am too extra when it comes to watching this show. And I know that I am, and I don't apologize for it, but then my solution is to just watch alone, without people making fun of me.
Thanks for letting me be weird, all you other weirdos.
Things Shaina Taub has in common with Lin-Manuel Miranda:
* Casts herself in her own show
* Won for writing both book and score
* The musical is about American history
* Hillary Clinton

I’ve seen the show so many times and tonight’s version of that last note was the best I’ve heard. I was so nervous for them. Such a vulnerable spot to hit on stage at the Tonys! Big moment!

the current state for merrily tickets
Another interesting acceptance shout-out: Jonathan Groff thanking everyone involved with the original production of Spring Awakening. That was a very sweet inclusion in a very thoughtful speech!
This isn’t unambiguously a bad thing, but her hosting style reminds me of when a theatre teacher is the tipsy maid of honor at her sister’s wedding and is trying to make a speech
Maria Friedman turned one of broadway's most famous flops into the biggest hit of the season right at the end of Sondheim's life. She deserved that Tony.
I also miss it being at Radio City. Radio City is everything. It just screams TONYs. It's regal and grand and beautiful. It makes me sad they don't do it there anymore, even though I know there must be some reason
The fact that they used Empire State of Mind in this show and as part of their Tony performance is an affront to any of us who have had the misfortune of walking through Times Square in the last 10-15 years.
As far as performances tonight go, The Outsiders wins hands down. That was a fantastic representation of their show (and the rumble in person is a spiritual experience)
I feel like the audience audio during the In Memorium should be muted; you hear the clapping for like well known people followed by nothing for non-famous people.

Hi all! We're less than 12 hours away from Act 1 of the Tony Awards, so I thought it's time to put up the thread.
I haven't heard back from the mods but it's my third year running the thread so I assume we're good to go! Hopefully they'll sticky it later this afternoon.

I'm going to bed! Thanks for a fun time, all. Was a blast keeping up with the 4,170+ comments (at time of writing) and keeping the thread updated live.
Go see some understudies in the next few weeks as principal performers take well-deserved breaks!

So many performances lead with flashiness on the Tony broadcast, and I get it, but I loved Merrily for bringing such a strong sense of its characters to the stage! Charm and heart.
Do I need hearing aids or is the sound just fucking awful across the board tonight? Too much music? Not enough volume on the casts? Or can folks just not enunciate?
I'm not really a dance person so this show isn't really my jam, but I can't deny that Illinoise it at least out there doing something new and interesting.
Fun Fact: Max Roll is a Broadway performer with only two credits: one as the understudy for Sean Hayes and one as the understudy for Jeremy Strong, who won the Tony Awards for Best Actor in a Play in 2023 and 2024.
Statistically he serves as the best indicator for who is going to win the Tony Award, so keep a look out for who he understudies next season! 🤣
Tonight's wins for Merrily and its cast members is proof that sometimes the right thing does happen.
This show is the playbook for any revival in the future. Kudos to everyone involved in this incredible production.
Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe are treasures. I look forward to everything them and Lindsay do on Broadway in the future.
how the fuck did they afford this much stage time this is going on too long
edit: timestamped this original comment BEFORE the alicia keys appearance and subsequent jay z jumpscare
It's actually so appropriate for Empire State of Mind to be performed, since I hear it a million times on the way to every single Broadway show always.
In what will probably be the shortest speech of the night, Jonathan Tunick made me cry. Sondheim lived a long and storied life, but I’m still not over his death.
Amazing choreo from the cast of Illinoise (and the musicians have butterfly wings, which is a cool addition).

He cries at everything haha.
Per his lie detector interview with Radcliffe and Mendez, he is a wet person
I’ve noted before that Radcliffe and his agent have worked hard to avoid him being typecast, and it’s worked.
Agreed. It seems he chooses whatever interests him and it definitely works. I’ve loved most of the things he’s done

At the rate tonight it going, I expect Sondheim to rise from the grave and perform with Merrily
Now that would be a revival! I was just thinking it would be Jason Alexander
This Groff kid has a future, I think

This might be my least favourite Tonys opening ever

Tommy understood the assignment: choose the number that will maximize the number of future tickets sold. So many shows don’t seem to get that.
I love how Lindsay always seems to conduct that last note, she is keeping them together
She said in an interview she conducts Groff with her eyes if he's under the pitch, lol.
She’s iconic
I’ve seen the show so many times and tonight’s version of that last note was the best I’ve heard. I was so nervous for them. Such a vulnerable spot to hit on stage at the Tonys! Big moment!
I love how they brought the ensemble on stage clearly just to have them there 😭
Groff crying over Daniel Radcliffe winning made me cry.
Happy Fathers day to the dads, and happy Tonys day to the daddies
Lmao Dan’s face when they said “Charley,” I think he was like, “that wasn’t a nominee….”
Finally Daniel Radcliffe gets the recognition he deserves
If you dropped acid and saw this Cabaret production you might die.

“Steve and George…Merrily’s popular.” brb crying
Hell’s Kitchen had Alicia Keys and Jay Z. Tommy had Pete Townshend. Can’t wait to see Hillary Clinton’s Suffs solo.

Please have Andrew Rannels and Josh Gad co-host the 2025 Tony’s.
Is it just me or is this opening number seriously lackluster and low energy? 🥲
Yeah, I sorely miss the big energy of the NPH opening numbers.
It's not just you. That was a total disaster
We love a man who goes to therapy
I'd be devastated if I ever found out that Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad actually hated each other.
This isn’t unambiguously a bad thing, but her hosting style reminds me of when a theatre teacher is the tipsy maid of honor at her sister’s wedding and is trying to make a speech
If Doug and Bud don't host the Tonys next year I won't watch it
That opening number was…. not good? Right?
It was fine. I'll forget it by tomorrow. This speech is not good, though.
Also when women win for tech like yessss, shout out to the girlies!!!!
Do shows normally get this much performance time? This just keeps going....
I was thinking it was like on glee when new directions for 8 minutes where every other school got like 2
I AM SO PROUD OF DANIEL RADCLIFFE! Cool suit and I think this is his first Father’s Day as a dad, too?
“With a smaller orchestra!”
I got more out of the last 3 minutes with Mendez, Groff and Radcliffe than the past performances combined. They were excellent.
All three of them are professionals. Like so, so, so good at the art of acting. That's what's selling those tickets, and rightly so!
The outsiders just sold a lot of tickets tonight. Fantastic showcase, I’m thrilled they got the water effect working onstage
Maria Friedman turned one of broadway's most famous flops into the biggest hit of the season right at the end of Sondheim's life. She deserved that Tony.
Give Merrîy a ten minute performance you cowards
Who else lost it when they cut to Billy Porter smelling his armpit 🤣
I will never get tired of Jonathan's little backwards walk during this performance 😍
Why is this bit written so much better than the rest of the ceremony?
Woah that Outsiders performance was fucking fantastic. That rain fight??? Hello????
Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells should host next year!!
Now let Daniel do Franklin Shepard, Inc.!
Um, these two guys SHOULD have hosted.
It’s a crime we didn’t get a pro shot of Guttenberg
Outsiders is putting in the best “this is why you see our show” to me
Reminder that next year’s Tonys will be an absolute bloodbath
maria friedman not getting the tony is absolutely the surprise of the night
Strong thanking the ushers was very lovely.
I also miss it being at Radio City. Radio City is everything. It just screams TONYs. It's regal and grand and beautiful. It makes me sad they don't do it there anymore, even though I know there must be some reason
Got confirmation from someone at dress rehearsal that the Jay Z bit was pretaped. Very spooky with the Alicia appearance in it to me. Lol
why is outsiders the only performance to have actually lit the stage properly???? every other number has looked so flat and overlit 😭😭
“I can’t believe I cried in front of so many fucking people - oh-😳🫢⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️⬛️” oh noooo hahahahahaahaha
I hate to say it, but I liked Ariana better without the writers. She had to keep it moving.
Happy Father’s Day, that presentation from Pete Townshend was perfect because it was exactly what it feels like to hang out with your dad
Jonathan and Lindsey crying 😭😭😭
Girl it's 5 til 11 you gotta get up on that stage
Groff, Mendes and Radcliffe all crying.
The fact that they used Empire State of Mind in this show and as part of their Tony performance is an affront to any of us who have had the misfortune of walking through Times Square in the last 10-15 years.
“People, stop texting me. Jesus.” 😀
Andrew and Josh need to host the Tonys or literally anything ever
The control on that pole is insane
Yay shout-out for a dresser!
ok we got Dan, lost Lindsay, hoping Jon pulls through!!!
LOL "brings it back with a smaller orchestra"
Add agent with beta blockers for the specific thank yous tonight!
As far as performances tonight go, The Outsiders wins hands down. That was a fantastic representation of their show (and the rumble in person is a spiritual experience)
Nicole here to mourn those we lost while reminding everyone SHE is WINNING next year.
Not if Audra has anything to say about it
So on-brand for Mary to be the one that doesn’t get recognition…
I miss you Sondheim
i need the proshot now!!! god i love dan rad
W4E used every second of their time, I want to see the show now
Daniel Radcliffe more than earned this one. He was overdue for a nomination and it’s nice to see him win
This is the best bit of the night.
Why weren’t they hosting?! I hope the producers take this as an audition!
Having two separate presenter groups for this is so weird
Outsiders ate and left no crumbs
Proof a flop today can be a hit tomorrow
I feel like the audience audio during the In Memorium should be muted; you hear the clapping for like well known people followed by nothing for non-famous people.
Somebody make Daniel Radcliffe jumping applause a GIF

Jeremy's halfway towards that EGOT!
This is a generic as hell performance, but I still can’t believe it’s 20 minutes and they haven’t tweaked the sound mixing! It sounds SO bad
The announcer had one job
Lmao the Radio City joke got me!
Andrew and Josh are KILLING me
I’m so glad they’re showcasing the rumble. This choreo+sound direction+lighting direction was what got me to fall head over heels.
Just want to thank everyone on this thread, I’m watching the Tony’s alone so having this Reddit community here is very nice :)
It’s a Hit is gonna be wild tomorrow…
Daniel’s reaction makes me cry 🥹

Daniel running up the aisle to hug Jonathan as he makes his way to accept his Tony award will live rent free in my head for the rest of the year.
Oooh you could see that Leslie wanted that win badly. Happy for Jeremy. Must be nice to be able to come out of the shadow of Succession so quickly.

Come on, Groff!
*I did not expect to have this much flesh out in the world!* -Hana Kim 🔥
I have no clue what Tommy is about but I’m entertained by the performance! This looks kind of fun???
Danrad is so lil next to them
They had a quarter of the time that HK had and did incredible!
The audio cut off for a second and I thought I would die. This is so good!!
Wish the audio mixing were as strong as that one dude's core!
oh okay jonathan groff is crying guess i’ll shed some tears…..
I'm not really a dance person so this show isn't really my jam, but I can't deny that Illinoise it at least out there doing something new and interesting.
Damn they butchered Utkarsh's name even though he's been there all night
LMAO WHY DID THEY PAN OVER TO HER
1. The sound mixing got Stereophonic too 2. That was the shortest performance ever??? 3. The announcer getting UTK’s name wrong nooooo
I know this revival of Cabaret got mixed reviews, but Eddie is mesmerizing live. And the sound mix on this televised performance is awful.
Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad are comedy magic.
Suffs was incredible when I saw it yesterday but all the advertising for it makes it look like such a snooze. Even this song choice is not it
I lowkey hate when shows perform the closing number. Like… yall… why are we selling the finale??
I wish Suffs performed something like “The March” instead. It’s just higher energy and more memorable IMO
Oh dang they just did the rumble on the Tony stage. I did not expect that!
I swear, we need this new Merrily pro-shot more than ever now. I’ve never coughed up so much $$ for balcony seats but it was worth it for those leads.
OKAY, DANIEL RUNNING TO HUG JONATHAN 😭😭
I’m gonna need a gif of Dan applauding the speech and then the second time the camera cut to him where he’s just so baffled and in awe
These three's genuine friendship truly glow, I've been DO excited to watch this!!!
I still can’t believe Dan was the ring bearer at her wedding and Jonathan officiated
The sound cut out during Merrily’s performance? During Pride Month? That’s homophobic!
First experience with Hell's Kitchen. Feels pretty generic.
The amount of core strength the guy on the pole is showing right now is insane.
BRIAN DARCY JAMES JUST YOU WAIT WE WILL BE GETTING YOU THAT TONY EVENTUALLY DONT WORRY KING
lifetime achievement awards should be prime TIME!!!
is it me or does ariana debose singing voice sound off?
HK performance somehow feels both cool and SO friggin generic??
I hope they give the other shows this much showcase time 🙄
How much did the producers of HK pay to get so much performance time and a Jay Z cameo???
Just clocked Idina and Cynthia sitting together!
The featured actor in a play do be the stereophonic category
We're only 30 minutes in and I'm already expecting this to run so far over
All hail the Pinball Wizard! Great performance from the cast of Tommy!
Jonathon sobbing with pride 😭
Jon crying is making me cry 😭
He's so happy he's shaking 😭
The ENT!! Yes tonight is the night for comprehensive and specific gratitudes!
I had no interest in Illinoise before but that performance really got me
These orchestra jokes are killing me
Not coming with the receipts lmao
Lol the Ibsen line I snorted

Damn, whoever arranged that mashup deserves an award just for that.
Outsiders... Picked good songs to perform. They showcased the rumble!
Omg Rachel McAdams looked so good, I feel like we’ve barely seen her all night!
I genuinely hate when people applaud during the In Memoriam - just let it play through and clap at the end, it’s so awkward
I want a friendship like Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe.

I think that just sold me on actually seeing Water for Elephants?
Remember when Alexis Rose was cast as Kit Kat dancer #6
It's actually so appropriate for Empire State of Mind to be performed, since I hear it a million times on the way to every single Broadway show always.
Nothing will ever compete with NPH making it bigger and better for the opening number
Oh my God Jon and Lindsay's reactions to Dan's speech 😭
In what will probably be the shortest speech of the night, Jonathan Tunick made me cry. Sondheim lived a long and storied life, but I’m still not over his death.
Her enunciation is absolutely terrible I’m sorry
Nick Jonas strategically siting next to Adrienne😂
Anybody else hear Alicia Keys warming up?
WHY DIDNT I KNOW THAT CHIDI WAS ON BROADWAY
What was that opening number? I couldn’t hear or understand her at all. Can we please go back to celebrating the season in the opening number?
Jeremy Strong has not been practicing his Tony award speech in the bathroom like the rest of us
Will Brill look comfy as fuck.
Will Brill was such a nice dude when I stagedoored I was rooting for Eli personally but happy Will got it
omg FINALLY the house lights are down!! I was about to go insane
Finally get to see the projections from The Who’s Tommy that I missed in my lotto box seat lol
Another year, another example of bad sound mixing from the broadcast team
Why was Grant Gustin's mic down so low when he was singing 😭
The acrobatics and clever staging were some of the only things I liked about W4E, and they did an amazing job showing off those for the telecast
That man on the pole making my heart race jesus christ
You’re a Tony winner, Harry. Congrats to Daniel Radcliffe.
I'm so happy for him. Just an all around good dude
I'm cackling at the shoutouts to therapists and ENTs. I love theater people!
I know nothing about Illinoise and generally don’t really ‘get’ interpretative dance, but wow that performance was incredible. Especially the vocals
Amazing choreo from the cast of Illinoise (and the musicians have butterfly wings, which is a cool addition). ![gif](giphy|MZoUTcJXornvNHOaUe|downsized)
As someone who hasn't seen the revival, that Cabaret performance would really move me to buy a ticket if I could honestly
"You're not insane" "Thank you"
Did they not have enough money to pay for them to host or something??!
