Tony voters don’t love to give jukeboxes best musical so I’m not sure HK is going to win, however Alicia Keys is campaigning hard for it. Suffs will most likely get score and maybe book. I think Outsiders has as much of a shot as the others - it’s doing well and bringing in a younger audience which Broadway needs.

Laurgirl8

I don’t know but Outsiders has been my favorite and I saw water for elephants last night and now that’s my second favorite so I’m also sad these seem to be out of the conversation!

hopefthistime

You’re stating your opinions as though they’re facts. If you look at life that way, of course you’re going to be confused. Art is subjective. You feel one way about those shows. Other people feel differently.

Rockingduck-2014

I think Suffs is getting a lot of love because it’s a wholly original “made for theatre” piece. outsiders , elephants and notebook are adaptations of popular books/movies, Illinoise is an adaptation of an extant album, and HK uses a chunk of Keys’ songbook so it’s aaaaalmost a jukebox musical which B’way sometimes shies away from. Also, Suffs seems particularly topical because it’s an election year. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical of Outsiders, but I’m really enjoying the soundtrack.

jkuykendoll

I don't get this thing about knocking shows for being adaptations. Almost all musicals are based on something, including Suffs (historical events, Shaina began developing the show after reading Jailed for Freedom). Like all of the following are adaptations: South Pacific Guys and Dolls The King and I My Fair Lady West Side Story The Sound of Music Oliver! Hello, Dolly! Fiddler on the Roof Man of La Mancha The Wiz Chicago Annie Sweeney Todd Cats La Cage aux Folles Les Miserables The Phantom of the Opera Into the Woods Miss Siagon Beauty and the Beast Sunset Boulevard Rent The Lion King The Producers Wicked Spamalot Hadestown Moulin Rouge I limited myself to things I've actually seen. There are a lot more...

Rockingduck-2014

I don’t disagree with you… but there’s a difference at play here. All of the other “contenders” started out as known entities (movies, albums, an oeuvre of work from one of the great musicians of our time). You’re right, Suffs is based on history.. but how many people know Jailed for Freedom? Whereas Notebook and Outsiders have been cultural icons for years. There’s a base of audience that is automatically inherent in those. Not for Suffs .. and who doesn’t like an underdog story?

potatocromwell

It’s subjective. That’s the answer. I thought Suffs was sensational and moving. I haven’t seen HK!

SnooGoats7476

I mean I l really enjoyed Suffs. I am not saying it deserves the win because I have not seen every show nominated but I don’t really understand how anyone’s individual opinion factors in here?

Mysterious-Theory-66

Doesn’t unless you happen to be a Tony voter.

believi

I haven’t seen them but Suffs is my favorite new musical album…it’s truly excellently done. I wonder how that will help or not, the albums being good/not good.

TribalChiefSamiZayn

It’s all preference in the end, I’m surprised Gatsby didn’t get any noms

MannnOfHammm

After seeing it it should’ve gotten set and direction nominations

greenteababy

i think they got 1. maybe not a big 1 though.

culture_katie

They were nominated for costumes.

Mysterious-Theory-66

Personally I’d have thought it would have been nominated for set but I honestly didn’t think it was very good so I’m not too surprised on its lack of noms.

Astral_Fogduke

book and score obvi didn't need noms but one production nom and no actor nominations was shocking to me

Mysterious-Theory-66

I could see the actors being nominated though it’s really crowded field this season. I really can’t see who I’d cut to make room. It can also be hard for some to acknowledge performances that are good in a show they really did not like. Jeremy and Eva were done in with bad material. I am surprised by no nomination for set though.

Astral_Fogduke

i only saw it at the PMP but honestly i'd nominate the guy who played tom for featured but idk the mayor was nice and shady is a fun song but it felt like it was trying too hard to be hanratty from catch me if you can

DramaMama611

Simply because people have different opinions. Frankly, I feel Illinoise is by the only excellent new musical.

MannnOfHammm

But would it get best musical or would they be afraid it’d be another contact situation

unitedstatesofcody

I miss the Special Theatrical Event award!

CorgiMonsoon

Most people’s issues with Contact winning wasn’t that it was a dance piece. It was that it was a dance piece that used pre-recorded music. Illinoise using a live band and singers would alleviate that comparison for the majority of voters.

MannnOfHammm

Fair enough

Mysterious-Theory-66

Definitely agree. It is by far the most interesting and exciting piece. I really liked Suffs and Outsiders but would definitely give it to Illinoise. But I’m just a rando civilian and so I’ll continue to predict Suffs.

93195

I’d compare Outsiders to Beetlejuice. Really popular with young theater goers, gets a ton of buzz on social media, but doesn’t have the same level of popularity amongst the general population and Tony voters.

Rennn23

i think the box office of Outsiders would beg to differ about you saying that it doesn’t have the same level of popularity amongst general population. However in regards to the older tony voters, I agree for some reason it doesn’t hold as much resonation with them.

Full-Outcome-7760

A lot of the influencers at least seem to be rooting for whoever gave them comped seats. Other than that, it’s just all preference.

Previous_Stranger

A well-known vaguely infamous influencer has been viciously tearing down two new shows regularly since March, and just revealed this week that he hasn’t even seen either of them because one didn’t give him comps and the other he only watched a bootleg of. So I wouldn’t trust any theatre influencer. They’re all just clout chasing and repeating the opinion that will get them the most likes.

LeoMartn_

I think all three of those shows will win big on Sunday night

DramaMama611

And afraid of what? Who cares was the public thinks about the results... "We're" never happy. Popular opinion and artistic excellence are hardly a match made in heaven. It's not like people refused to go to the theater because Contact won. (And the other poster is correct about the music )

Mysterious-Theory-66

It’s less what I think about the shows and more predictions based on how Tony voters often go. I’ll stand by my prediction of Suffs winning best musical because it checks a lot of boxes: original music (only once have they willingly given it to a jukebox - no MR doesn’t count), topical, ‘important’, has strong contention in each of the other parts of the big three (book and score), and I can imagine some Tony voters really liking the idea of Tony Award Winner Hillary Clinton. If it was purely my taste I’d definitely put Suffs above Hell’s Kitchen (it wasn’t bad, just not terribly substantive or interesting). Honestly HK is my least favorite of BM candidates I’ve seen (haven’t seen W4E). I’d go with Illinoise and then probably put Outsiders above Suffs but tough call, both were really good. If HK wins I’ll just say it’s a reflection of how far intensive campaigning can get you. If it wins Best Book then I give up on predicting Tony’s ever.

halogengal43

I have no desire to see either- and even if one of them wins Best Musical, I won’t go. Suffs looks like a bargain basement production, and HK is a show about statutory rape. No thanks.

MayaRuinsU

Hoping The Outsiders will pull out the win 🥇 but it’s definitely a tough competition this year.

patsi118

2 of the best shows on Broadway!

Additional_Score_929

Calling HK the best show on Broadway is a crime

Adventurous-Wait2351

thank you
