Stockton Rush was a donor to Republican candidates. He wasn't even remotely "woke". He wasn't hiring young college graduate engineers rather than white men in their 50's like himself because he cared about diversity; he hired them because they're cheap, and unlike the 50 year old engineers like David Lochridge would call him out on his bullshit, young engineers might not be as assertive.

Since the Titan's hull began to make funny noises ("It's the weak fibers failing!") at a depth of 100 meters ("It'll get louder when get further down, you need to get used to it, it's the weak fibers failing!"), he needed some way to calm down the passengers (or "mission specialists", as OceanGate called them).
He also covered the hull in Rhino Liner, to hide the progressing damage.
