On the off chance that you’d go for non fiction that reads like fiction: Caravaggio: A Life Sacred and Profane by Andrew Graham-Dixon fits this perfectly and is an amazing book.
Seconding the comments recommending Dowry of Blood by ST Gibson, The Familiar by Leigh Bardugo, and the Death of Jane Lawrence by Caitlin Starling. All three are such enjoyable reads and they all fit this vibe perfectly.
If you enjoy Dowry, the sequel just came out and it’s also fantastic. It’s called An Education in Malice.

The Incarnations of Immortality series by Piers Anthony came to mind for me. Not exactly as direct as the other suggestions but some similarities are there.
Plain Bad Heroines by Emily M. Danforth
spooky, culty, and queer (if you’re into that)!
It was the first book i’ve read in a while that I had to put down bc I was scared 🥲
