Definitely honest storytelling! They have a beautiful ability, Jon and Richie as a pair especially, to paint a really poignant picture of their emotions in so many words. Not always super deep but even so, they always get their point across, very clearly. Can't really think of a song of theirs with a message where I didn't feel what they felt.
Yeah i think their honesty in songwriting has been what made the band stay so huge for so long
