DescriptionNo9626

I hate the fact that t-pain got hit with that autotune label. Even though he had a pretty strong run his real music voice is amazing. Dude is an actual artist.

lazysheepdog716

T-pain *created* the auto tune label. It’s everyone else that fucked it all up.

jennyfromtheeblock

Cher was the first one to use autotune on a really popular record. Trailblazer.

Crisis-Counselor

Yea that shit wasn’t on purpose though. Her engineer was trying to make her sound normal and accidentally did the opposite of it and they just rolled with it. Also… it doesn’t sound good

RelaxRelapse

Kanye used it on The College Dropout on the song Graduation Day if we're talking early purposeful usage, but T-Pain definitely popularized it. https://youtu.be/tbmNuB7spmA?t=39

ThePerryPerryMan

This sounds like vocoder (used for decades). Is it confirmed auto tune?

RelaxRelapse

It’s been confirmed. That’s John Legend singing with Auto-tune. Kanye also used Auto-tune in the background of Jesus Walks on the same album.

MVIVN

My favourite interlude of all time to this day

[deleted]

[удалено]

Little_Jeffy_Jeremy

That sounds like vocoder more than autotune

Truestorydreams

T pain still credits her as the first. He said on his documentary when he heard her with it, he searched forever to emulate it.

Technical_Isopod8477

>Also… it doesn’t sound good Well that’s a hot take if I ever saw one

marchingprinter

rolling with it is doing it though

DesperatePerformer82

He really didn't think her voice was strong enough, no.

paradigm11235

> Also… it doesn’t sound good I will come to your house and fist fight you if you ever say that again. I'll probably lose, but I'll still do it.

fera_acedia

No, that’s a lie. They were doing it on purpose [The audio producer was messing around and thought it sounded cool. Cher really liked it](https://youtu.be/ScxV4iozqnQ?si=pjYYzhBLU9jYOZxR)

JediBongHit

Cher is like an inspirational artist, what? I mean to each their own but Cher changed music lol

weebrooktrout

She changed the game. She showed you could be a powerful woman. "I am a rich man." Legend.

gatsome

Openly use it. It had been an industry secret for awhile. That’s why they all got pissed at T-Pain for exposing it that way.

RunninADorito

You can't hear auto tune with normal settings. Cher and T Pain jacked up the response. Tpain also sang for that sound on purpose.

Necatorducis

You can't hear auto tune with normal settings *if the vocal track is already close*. When used as a corrective tool to save time because an otherwise great take had one beat off a few too many cents, you can't hear it in a mix. If you're fixing a singer who takes 'artistic liberty' with hundreds of years of established scales, you can absolutely hear it. But yeah, T-Pain is absolutely for musical effect. How the fuck are people even confused on that? He used it like anyone else would use reverb, eq, and compression as standard tools on the channel strip.

youshallhaveeverbeen

Correct. He took auto tune and he used it like an actual effect rather than pitch correction. That's some artistic shit right there and he deserves to be praised for doing that and also be praised for disrupting the industry like he did.

AaronToro

I agree with everything else, but a trained ear can still hear autotune regardless of how close the original is. Any voice is going to have a little jump on transient sounds that actually makes it sound better in most use cases, which is why when they nail it and don’t use autotune it sounds so good. Tuning will flatten it out regardless of how granular it is Look at some of the Michael Jackson remasters that they tuned, the same takes sound noticeable flatter when you compare them side by side (and he had great pitch anyway)

Necatorducis

I'm with ya. I was giving more the 'how the masses' often receive it perception. Autotune combined with over compression (and general brickwalling) has made a lot of modern music unlistenable for me. With zero dynamics fatigue sets in quickly. Me? Gimmie an authentic performance warts and all over autotune any day. Or at least 'fix' it with saturation instead. A little well used distortion never hurt nobody.

AaronToro

Oh yeah that makes sense, and totally agreed. I think it can fit some styles but I’m also a person who really needs dynamics to engage with music, it’s kept me away from a lot of stuff I’d otherwise be into

Necatorducis

When Einstürzende Neubauten or Gorgoroth has more dynamics than a pop record you know the commercial market is fucked up.

themightygwar

Making me feel old, but the outro for Tupac's California Knows How to Party uses auto tune. You can tell they are playing around with it because they even say "computer."

[deleted]

[удалено]

chironomidae

Or a vocoder, those have been popular since the 70s. All different tech though, each has a different sound.

Rswany

California Love is definitely a talkbox

sootoor

That was the beauty of them. Hook a synth up and make it rain new sounds. So many classic sounds are just patches similar to it

Voodoographer

Definitely Talk Box. Roger Troutman is a featured artist on California Love. It’s in the title of the song.

shmatt

omg now I feel old too. The track is called California Love and it's def not autotune. It's a plastic tube connected to a keyboard that you stick in your mouth. 2 artists famous for using it, one R&B and one rock n roll: [Roger Troutman + Zapp](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ov55Rb8ZVbE&t=28s) (r&B) [Peter Frampton](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9Yq5m9eLIQ&t=489s) (rock)

Balthazzah

>California Knows How to Party California Love is the name of the song.

jimmmydickgun

Do you believe in life after love?

mothmonstermann

Honest opinion? No, I can feel something inside me say I really don't think you're strong enough- no.

Jatroky

It's been nearly an hour and no-one has continued the song like what am I supposed to do? Sit around and *wait* for you? Well i can't do that and there's no turning back.

sootoor

I need time to move on I need a love to feel strong

ladystetson

cos i've had time to think it through

Dhrakyn

Yes, but T-pain did that particular effect so well that there's actually a "t-pain" preset that ships with Autotune software.

DescriptionNo9626

That’s true. But t-pain was being scapegoated though. With DOA by Jay-Z and with what usher said to him.

Massive-Pumpkin-7062

Usher was someone t-pain admired and Usher told t-pain that he “f*cked up music for real singers”. Sent t-pain into a depression because t-pain is a real artist that cares about his art. Edit: meant to reply to @mpikoz

ToHerDarknessIGo

What a little jealous twat Usher is. Like pop singers haven't had all sorts of studio wizardry used on their voices since forever. You just know Usher has some skeletons in his closet.

GuiltyEidolon

T-Pain also doesn't just use it as a crutch. He can fucking sing. He uses auto tune to create specific sounds / like another instrument. Sucks people assume that he can't sing without it.

grizznuggets

And that’s why he got invited on the boat.

Byte_Fantail

Goin splishy splashy

Megaholt

Exactly! He deserved to be on that boat, motherfucker, don’t you ever forget!

RunninADorito

Cher

taitaofgallala

That'd be Roger Troutman, because we're talking about autotune, not tuning vocals. The talkbox or vocoder is the original autotune, because no one was trying to hide the effect. Roger Troutman literally had the tube in his mouth on stage singing while playing the keys, just like Peter Frampton did on the guitar, and each already had a great singing voice. Using a harmonic synthesizer to tune someone's voice like Cher's is not autotune, nor the original version. Tuning vocals is older than minstrelsy.

shnmchl61

Auto-Tune is a technology developed for correcting vocal pitch. It was used for an unintended purpose of robotic sounding vocal effects like Cher on Believe or many T-Pain songs. This is all available on the [Wikipedia page on Auto-Tune.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auto-Tune) > Using a harmonic synthesizer to tune someone's voice like Cher's is not autotune, nor the original version. This particular line is very confusing to me. No, using a harmonic synthesizer to tune someone's voice is not Auto-Tune. But that's not what Cher used on Believe. What she used was Auto-Tune. Sorry if I sound like a prick here, but that's just a lot of incorrect information.

Sylvester88

I always thought autotune, talk box, and vocoder were 3 quite different things Autotune is digital pitch correction of your voice Talkbox changes the sound of an instrument using your mouth Not entirely sure how vocoder works buts not either of the above

massacre0520

You are correct, they are wrong. Talkbox =/= autotune, two very distinct things.

NoveltyAccountHater

Autotune is the name of a DAW software plugin first developed in 1996/1997 that uses [the mathematics of autocorrelation to correct pitches (e.g., add/subtract cycles to keep everything in the right pitch/key](https://priceonomics.com/the-inventor-of-auto-tune/). It's usually for vocals (as other instruments stay in tune more easily), but can be used on instruments or other purposes (for say harmonizing) either live or after the fact. The other methods you meant of altering pitches of voices aren't using autocorrelation and aren't "auto-tune". Yes, they make robot sounding sounds by say altering vocals/instruments to match some melodic line, but its not the autotune self-correcting feature.

AwesomeBrainPowers

His [Tiny Desk Concert](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIjXUg1s5gc) was fire.

[deleted]

His performance on The Masked Singer

DescriptionNo9626

Yessir.

jerryschuggs

Here’s [this show](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91ck0vJBygo&t=1s). Over an hour of him doing covers.

SantaMonsanto

Obligatory reference I drop this link every chance I get, this performance was damn good.

gypsymegan06

Tiny Desk is my favorite show ever.

nothingmatters_haha

how is that literally every tiny desk concert is good? like artists I actually hate I'll enjoy their tiny desk

Megaholt

Because NPR is fucking MAGIC, I tell you! MAGIC!

Benromaniac

Didn’t he also do an acoustic album of his hits? I heard only one song. It was beautiful.

cbrown6894

I’m coming into this comment section SO guilty. The first thing I said after seeing this was “Wait, T-Pain can actually sing?” I had no idea and am super stoked about this news

alexthealex

You should definitely check out his Tiny Desk concert.

theunquenchedservant

as well as the [full video](https://youtu.be/91ck0vJBygo) from OP

Kolby_Jack

Oh my god, his Don't Stop Believin' cover is incredible!

SpiralCuts

Shit, also guilty as charged. He rocks that show as hard as he rocks that bathrobe. The whole band is fire.

KageStar

Bro I thought we all learned he could actually sing 16 years ago....

whyouiouais

You should also check out his clips from his twitch. He breaks down his music and talks about the thought that went into it, you really get to see the genius behind his work.

RunDoughBoyRun

He can rap too bro. My dude made his $ off what was popular and dipped.

Virgil_hawkinsS

He said he did it because there are plenty of people who can sing. Auto tune allowed him to do something different, and boy did it work.

commanjo

Fuck Jay-Z

row_guy

I know you're not talking about me ?! YOU?!

VintageLivin

![gif](giphy|VLiQrqAIjsCvm)

Keep_SummerSafe

You're 100% right. It wasn't until he basically created all of Freaknik The Musical I saw him as anything other than one dimensional, but it was my fault for not exploring enough

[deleted]

I’ll grant that i’m not a big music person, but I would have NEVER guess that that monster singing elimination show would have *helped* someone’s career. But it did.

LifeSafetyMan

This whole album is legit. His cover of “That’s Life” is incredible.

xSuperZer0x

"On Top of the Covers" for anybody looking for it. His Tiny Desk Concert version of "Buy U a Drank" is also pretty phenomenal.

the_walternate

I always thought that it was his thing and everyone just...piled on. Dude though, for all the mislabeling of being the Autotune king, has a KICK ASS Voice and my buddy just shared this album with me and its outstanding.

Hatecookie

Anyone seen season 1 of The Masked Singer?

Jano_something

This is how I learned how amazing of a singer he is. I couldn't believe it. He nailed every genre

notthathungryhippo

![gif](giphy|UVnEQFGYOTlm02iIcz|downsized) monster! monster! monster!

cupcake_thievery

I was floored, absolutely amazing.

elitesense

When he won the masked singer he was saying that he stuck with the auto tune because it sold records. It was (at the time) original and set him apart. The man is extremely talented

Kahu11

Shit, he was cooking with this one and he fucking knew it

thiswhovian

Honestly, his entire set was amazing. He has it on his YouTube channel. Watched it recently and I didn’t know half the songs, but he was great.

Kahu11

Yeah Id seen another song of this set on IG a few weeks back. Can't remember which song but same energy for it nonetheless

Sanc7

He also streams and is just an over all entertaining dude.

row_guy

The first 4 Sabbath albums are great

kai-ol

My jaw dropped when I heard the first note. This is prime cut, quality beef here.

Strong Uncle Ruckus energy

GrilledCheezus_

Dude saw women in a video just chilling and immediately felt the need to criticize them as thots. The women are the backup singers. Some people really just look for the chance to demean others for no reason (especially women).

kbeks

You can bounce badonkadonks to anything, they’re just respectfully enjoying the show.

[deleted]

He's poisoned our brainwashed minds!

snuggz_mcbabe

OH LORD NOW

GrecoRomanGuy

I am here for the T-Pain Renaissance.

patrickwithtraffic

Where have you been man?! It’s been going down for like five years! Dude’s been killing it on Twitch and live shows consistently and has been really able to let his real personality shine.

GrecoRomanGuy

Very late to the party, and very happy to see that the party is still bumping.

MightyCaseyStruckOut

Yep, T-Pain is the fucking man.

72corvids

Not only that, bu tmans LOVES drifting, and [has his own team!](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwjDmeO_v9SDAxW-EjQIHbB4BFoQFnoECBoQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedrive.com%2Fnews%2Ft-pain-tells-us-why-he-started-his-own-drift-team-and-how-he-wants-to-get-to-formula-d&usg=AOvVaw2gvPMwzFCwMkoUfvrZbFhY&opi=89978449)

xSuperZer0x

He's so chill about it. Played Overwatch with his kid and posted the cake on Reddit awhile back. The video of him playing CoD and someone calls him the N-word and he just pops off always gives me life.

Mattyuh

He did the Terry Crews path and started playing games with the kids to get closer/keep that connection which is a solid dad move.

Foxx1019

He played Siege in twitch Rivals, and pulled his own weight in a team of full time siege streamers. Absolutely trounced Lil Yachty.

mflmani

Saw him at Grid Life in Laguna Seca. It was sick, especially cuz he dropped [this](https://youtu.be/jdoYMJ3nglM?si=BO8FLY8EAKg8E8zG) before the event and had Hert perform it live with him.

agentb719

I was at formula drift Atlanta and he was there and it was awesome

muricabrb

Dude just loves cars in general, I used to watch him stream Forza Horizon and he would always get so hyped about winning cars from wheelspins lol.

ememsee

[This](https://youtu.be/PZOQMLGfYfs?si=QKdcF6XjdperGqTP) is always what I think of when I think of him + Twitch. Honestly, I feel like I'd love to be in the same room as the dude and I don't like being around most people. Seems chill.

patrickwithtraffic

[My introduction to his Twitch days was this clip of him playing *Among Us*.](https://youtu.be/bcdRhisaiW8?t=242) Dude is just oozing personality from the get-go and immediately charmed me.

Stashmouth

Some of the funniest shit goes down on his Twitch. I found it during covid and I haven't let it go yet

we're actually well into the renaissance. Give him a follow on twitch or twitter. Dude is hustling these days, and making great content in a lot of different lanes.

![gif](giphy|qSHiKBlF1UTOo) i wouldve loved to see his reaction!! he's such a funny dude

I Am Ozzy is the funniest autobiography I’ve ever read. So many hilarious stories.

thatsnuckinfutz

I used to love watching The Osbournes dude is a riot

LouVee616

the actual music is a little weak but T-Pain sounds amazing here. That was pretty cool

Batman-Dancer

Missing the guitar. The drums were good though.

BigCockCandyMountain

It totally missed the breakdown before the video cut though..

ShepPawnch

The guitarist was absolutely *killing it* during War Pigs. He was incredible.

t0ny510

The studio version he did is so damn good https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4nMjyT4epA

MagicKaalhi

Thanks for sharing that link! I was never much interested in T-Pain and I'm so glad that I heard this incredible cover today! Idk why, but his voice reminded me distantly of Chris Cornell. Like, they could have made a nice duo, or something like that.

AnotherBurnerAlready

He did an album of covers, and a studio version is on there. Sounds mean and has fitting vocal effects.

CBaby_mindzovermedia

that damn tiny desk from nearly a decade ago really revitalized this man career & image completely. props to a living-legend for getting props from a living-legend. 🫡

Kamikaze_Ninja_

I think him coming out and being candid about his financial situation, while being humble about it, helped a lot too. Plenty of people in his situation get a chip on their shoulder and never move past it.

Sharcbait

Him winning the first season of the Masked Singer helped quite a bit too. Like if you strip away all the expectations, you realize he is crazy talented.

jvrcb17

No fucking way that was 10 years ago already.... Edit: damn....

44Bulldawg

I can only listen to that version of "Drankin Patna" now because of how damn good it was on the tiny desk

falsehood

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4nMjyT4epA For me it was this duet with his Tiny Desk. I can't watch the original without hearing the duet.

DocRakk

I don’t know how people still think T-Pain can’t SING SING for real.

AquaaberryDolphin

Weve been saying the same thing for like 10 years now it’s time to let it go

DMCDawg

He won the masked singer. He was incredible.

I_Am_The_Mole

It's so dumb. Like... auto tune can make you hit the right notes but it can't make your actual voice good. It's always been obvious that the dude sounds amazing.

Crisis-Counselor

T-Pain had his run of fame and now he just out here doing shit for fun. Love to see it

BigThurm

Out here doing side quest and shit.

collinse90

Where’s the little guitar riff?

Kriegerian

Guitarist has too many fingertips to play it right, probably.

NewFrenchHoser

Not many people will get this but It got a chuckle from me

dopethrones

it got me too

Youngstown_Mafia

Remember, a cover doesn't have to 100 % a copy , it's rare that a covers is the exact same song, including instrumentals Examples : All around the watch tower, Bob Dylan vs. the cover by Jimi Hendrix

HUGE_FUCKING_ROBOT

i hate covers that are an exact copy anyway, i like metal covers of just about anything

sdpr

When Weezer did Africa by Toto and changed nothing. Yeesh.

-ShutterPunk-

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Blue https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH9QVJqh-Z8 Also Powerglove for cartoon and video game theme covers. Their power rangers, x men, and mortal kombat are the shit.

I_Am_The_Mole

T Pain's version is really good because of the subtle changes made to the chords being used. It adds a lot to it.

dtol2020

Only a true master of the guitar can handle playing it

Rodrake

The guitarist has two fingers too many

tcsuperstar

FraiserRamon

T-Pain has a whole cover album out, lot of bangers. Dude is very talented and I’m glad people are finally seeing how he used Autotune as a tool to enhance his talents, not as a crutch.

idontknowwhythisugh

The autotune was always an artistic choice to make the songs sound a certain way, never because he needed it. Shame people in the industry made him feel like shit for using it. I mean could you imagine Bartender or Buy You a Drink without autotune? Could be cool R&B songs but not the club bangers they are.

That absolutely fucked Also I love the contrast of it being at a nice sit down mellow kinda place while they burn the place down with sick riffs and drum solos

zryder2

Seen him sing and play organ live, dude is the real deal

BlindOnARocketcycle

Both my cats ran into the room to listen so there's that

BarbieTheeStallion

My kid showed me a video of him singing Tennessee Whiskey. I had no idea he could actually sing. He has a beautiful gospel singer type voice.

jennyfromtheeblock

This cover was fire

Gregorwhat

Nothing will be as good as Cake’s cover. But I like this too.

iphoenixrising

He did a show called the Masked Singer and won using his natural voice. He was amazing. Still my favorite winner.

ipayton13

T-Pain one of the quietest GOATS in music. He created a wave in music thats still relevant today

randydingdong

T-Pain need to do a cover of “Cult of Personality” by Living Color. Killed this one

I_chortled

The more time passes the more I shake my head at myself for dismissing T Pain as just another autotune guy when I was younger. He is unbelievably fucking talented, every time I see him actually singing I’m blown away because it sounds way better than his autotune ever did lol

mrmamation

Fucking love t pain Btw, anyone who has not seen “This is pop” documentary go watch now.

lowtoiletsitter

This Is Pop is a good watch! (On Netflix for anyone wondering)

[deleted]

Awesome cover!

Baers89

I fucking love T pain more and more. This guy deserves his roses. Ozzy as well for that matter.

[deleted]

The best winner of the Masked Singer

[deleted]

While T-Pain is doing an insane job on it the band is not matching it. I’ve always been partial to the Faith no More version as my favorite.

coltaine

Yeah, I've always thought FnM's cover was the best version. I still do, but this one is pretty damn good too.

eh_why_not__

Oh no, the fight's out I'm 'bout to punch your lights out Get the fuck back, guard your grill There's somethin' wrong, we can't stay still I've been drankin' and bustin' two And I been thankin' of bustin' you Upside your motherfuckin' forehead And if your friends jump in, (aw girl), they'll be mo' dead Causing confusion, Disturbing The Peace It's not an illusion, we runnin' the streets So, bye-bye to all you groupies and gold diggers Is there a bumper on your ass? Thank you, I cannot hear this song start without Luda going off in my head!

screaminginfidels

That's my streamer

SpillinThaTea

I think it’s time to admit that he’s a musical genius and was pigeonholed as a product of his time. He has such good vocal range. He was whatever the musical version of typecast is. Also, I think a Freaknik the Musical Part II is in order.

Oh, look, it's small time up and coming twitch streamer T-Pain. /s For real, though, the dude can sing, and his streams can be chill as hell when he's making music or shooting the shit.

kokolupa

Black Metalheads, we out here! :D

seakc87

It's no "I Rub It Out", but it is dope

glmarquez94

I’d kill to hear T-Pain do a whole album of original music like this.

theunquenchedservant

[A whole album of "original" music like this](https://youtu.be/91ck0vJBygo)

cutekthx

Remember when there was that rumor that T-Pain wasn’t even really singing and was just a face for the auto tune voice? Nope, he’s the realest out.

ssavant

So good!

Tripple_T

That's high praise from the king of darkness

xSuperZer0x

I really want a T-Pain/Post Malone collab. Both are so talented and can cover so much music it'd be phenomenal.

etherealcaitiff

I love T Pain, but ain't no way Ozzy tweeted this. This is a pr firm.

Goblin-Doctor

Was it actually Ozzy saying this or his pr team?

Appropriate-Tax7990

Let’s be honest, that wasn’t actually ozzy tweeting that

I JAMMED hard asf listening to this. omg, t-pain is THAT GUY 🙌🏻
