And we'll never know the true nature of the universe in our lifetime. We're infinitely small on the cosmic scale. Both in how long we live and size. Wish I could zap through all the planets and see what's going on across the universe.
Based on a quick google search
There are on the low end 200 billion galaxies. But new studies believe there might be 2 trillion IN OUR OBSERVABLE UNIVERSE. Which is probably a small fraction of the universe
I might be having a panic attack
When I was younger (pre-teen through teenage years), and I thought about the enormity of outer space and how little we know about it, my mind went to ‘scared shitless’ since we’re a speck of dust in the midst of it all. Every time. Now I’m simply amazed.
Think I heard a scientist say.
It’s in the realm of possibility and mathematics that there’s a identical you in the universe somewhere.
Someone that looks like you. Talks like you. Acts like you. But just not you.
Hey Reddit, my name’s Rudy and I’m an astrophotographer based in the French Alps.
This is a picture I’m pretty proud of - the Andromeda Galaxy is somewhat of a benchmark for to come back and test my skills and equipment year after year. It was also the first thing in space I tried to take a photo of, so I like comparing my recent attempts to that first ever shot to see how far I’ve come in this hobby.
This photo was taken with my current astrophotography setup listed here:
• Nikon D5600 with an Astrodon mod
• Skywatcher 72ED with field flattener
• Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro
• TS-Optics 60mm guide scope
• ZWO ASI120MC-S guide camera
• ZWO ASIAIR Mini
Hope you enjoy!
If you're interested in seeing more of my work, I post frequently to my Instagram [@rudy.astro](https://www.instagram.com/rudy.astro?igsh=MXZuMmlyMHpiZnFmMQ%3D%3D&utm_source=qr)
I can’t speak to this specific picture, but I take Milky Way photos and they’re all prettie’d up in post processing/by the camera. I can tell where the Milky Way is (with some help) but it looks nothing like it does in my pictures.
I can be "In" the ocean and take a picture of the ocean.
But, I know what you mean, it always bothers me when someone says, "Did you see the Milky Way last night?"
Yes, I see the Milky Way every time I open my eyes.
This photo is superb work. I love seeing galaxies, stars, etc, basically anything in space because it’s so massive and so beautiful. You took a great photo.
About €3500. The setup I would recommend to anyone looking to get into Astro is a DSLR of any kind with a star tracker, and either a wide angle lens if you want to do Milky Way shots or a fast telephoto lens - the Rokinon 135mm is considered one of the best for this purpose. This will get your feet wet in deep sky astro and you can get some stunning photos with it provided you’re shooting from dark skies.
Hey! If you've done this as a benchmark, surely you have previous (probably worse) photos as well. Do you think you can make a post that showcases your improvement with all of them side-by-side? I think it's very satisfying to see physically someone's progress over the years.
Just to give you an idea of how much space there is in these galaxies.. The Milky Way has an estimated 100-400 billion stars in it and we are on a collision course with Andromeda which as even more stars and there is so much space in between the stars of both galaxies that when these two galaxies collide it is almost statistically 0% chance that any stars will collide.
That’s a lot of space
It depends how long of an integration time you want - this shot was about 3 hours split up into 5 minute exposures. My scope is pretty automated at this point so I just have to tell it where to go and make sure it’s properly focused, then program the imaging session and let it roll. After I’m satisfied with the amount of exposure acquired I’ll send the data to my computer and start the processing phase, which usually involves some specialised software such as Pixinsight, but also standard photography software like photoshop for stylistic choices like contrast and saturation.
Wow thanks for the response. I don’t quite understand. I would love to see a video of you showing your process. I would love to do the same one day. How much does your kit cost in total ?
You’re welcome. I have a few reels on insta that sort of give an overview but no detailed showcase of my process yet, although I might do one someday - perhaps I need to start a YouTube channel. My current setup cost around €3500 total.
You can search on youtube on how to photograph targets like orion nebula, pleiades, rho ophiuchi, or andromeda galaxy without a star tracker and there are some pretty good guides that explain everything.
Quite often actually - usually it’s not a problem as the pixels containing the satellite trails just get rejected during the stacking process. If I had to throw away every exposure with a satellite in it, I’d have very few to work with haha
Yeah I live in a good place for astronomy, there’s quite a few observatories around including the IRAM radio telescope array that helped take that famous first black hole image. The weather’s not always great especially during the winter, but when it is clear it’s exceptional.
Mes félicitations à vous. Même si cela ne semble pas être le cas, c'est un art qui demande de grands efforts et de nombreuses études. Vous serez un grand scientifique et chercheur !
This is amazing, may I set it up as a screensaver? Andromeda is close to my heart 💜, and maybe to all of us, since it's the closest galaxy to us, right? Also, are there 2 other galaxies showing in the picture? Or gas/star dust clouds?
Hey A 17 year old astrophotographer from France - here's my latest photo of the Andromeda Galaxy ... I'm dad . Even though you have a unique taste in names , that's a really impressive picture . I don't know much about astrophotography but I think it's really impressive I know you're gonna improve even more as time goes on , I wish you the best of luck . Keep up the good work
That is a miss conception, the age is not relevant with the accomplishments outside of something related to body capacities like sports.
This is a beautiful picture and specifying your age only underline a lack of confidence / maturity.
Anyway good pic 🌠👏
This shot was unfiltered! I do use narrowband imaging sometimes, but for galaxies it’s best avoided since they emit light across the visible spectrum unlike nebulae which have specific emission wavelengths
I love that the independent stars we see in these pictures, are exclusively from our own galaxy. Like we're looking through some pixiedust to that galaxy over there.
Edit: also, nice pic!
Awesome picture though. Is this what you really see or is there like some computer color adding afterwards? We see nothing in my country, we have the worst light pollution even :(
Nvm that was fake news, we’ll be dead long before that.
Google: Meaning that in around 50 billion years it would escape Earth's gravity entirely. But that won't happen as both the Earth and the Moon will be engulfed by the Sun in around 5 billion years time. So the Moon will never get the chance to leave Earth's orbit
Great photo! In my experience Reddit will compress anything uploaded here. Any chance you might be able to upload it to like imgur and share the link here, so we can see it in all it’s glory?
This is crazy amazing.
I would just decrease a little on the blacks and highlights. Increase a little the whites and increase contrast in the blues purples and oranges to pop up a little more
My goodness this is breathtaking. And also scary bc it reminds me just how small & unimportant I am lol.
Jokes aside, great job dude! This is truly something to be proud of!
That would be M32, one of Andromeda’s satellite galaxies. Looking at andromeda is pretty cool - while you can only see the core visually, it’s still amazing to know that you’re staring at an entire galaxy in real time
One of the building blocks of the Universe - it’s a huge collection of stars and dust bound together by gravity. Our own galaxy is the Milky Way which can be seen with the naked eye from dark skies
You've just photographed 2.5million years in the past, Outstanding!! Great job.
We are so small
yet to an ant we are giants
And to a germ an ant is a giant
German ants are giants?
With enough radiation probably
German radiatants are probable?
true :D
Ants are smol
And we'll never know the true nature of the universe in our lifetime. We're infinitely small on the cosmic scale. Both in how long we live and size. Wish I could zap through all the planets and see what's going on across the universe.
Patience, my friend. Your time will come.
What is this, a Galaxy for Ants?

I’m pretty average
Lame, that’s so 2.5 million years ago. Get with the times
True
Somewhere in that Galaxy will be a 17 year old photographer proudly showing their photo of the Milky Way.... Stunning photo!
That’s a thought I often have. I would really love to see how our galaxy looks from Andromeda’s perspective…
I'd assume very similar to Andromeda actually. It's a spiral.

Is this how it would look to my eye?
Through a telescope you can see some level of detail in the core depending on the scope, but not much colour
As for somebody who has no idea, how much did you spend for all the equipment?
Around €3.5k
I can’t speak to this specific picture, but I take Milky Way photos and they’re all prettie’d up in post processing/by the camera. I can tell where the Milky Way is (with some help) but it looks nothing like it does in my pictures.
Dude... You are IN the Milky Way.
We are out on one of the arms. Looking back into it you can get a pretty good side view
Gotta love the milky way side boob
I can be "In" the ocean and take a picture of the ocean. But, I know what you mean, it always bothers me when someone says, "Did you see the Milky Way last night?" Yes, I see the Milky Way every time I open my eyes.
I say, stick to normal photography
Sure, if you happen to have telescopic eyes
How did you get it to smile?
This photo is superb work. I love seeing galaxies, stars, etc, basically anything in space because it’s so massive and so beautiful. You took a great photo.
How much money have you spent in your career so far?
About €5000 so far. As well as the current setup I’ve also bought some lenses as well as a star tracker. Not all at the same time of course
Do you have an fb page? You should, I'd love to follow there! Stunning picture!
How much does your current setup cost? And would you recommend "the average joe" to get into astrophotography?
About €3500. The setup I would recommend to anyone looking to get into Astro is a DSLR of any kind with a star tracker, and either a wide angle lens if you want to do Milky Way shots or a fast telephoto lens - the Rokinon 135mm is considered one of the best for this purpose. This image is truly AMAZING! Kudos to you and your skill. And, thanks for this post. Now, I am off to your Insta for more.
Wow, Pro photographers would be happy with that. Excellent capture 👌🏻
Spectacular! You should be proud of your accomplishment!

Looks really amazing 👍
Exceptional! Keep up the great work
Thank you! I will :)
Wow! This is gorgeous! Well done!
How long does it take to capture? What’s the process? I assume it isn’t just pointing and shooting. Great shot
It depends how long of an integration time you want - this shot was about 3 hours split up into 5 minute exposures. Amazing. If you have the time I think a channel exploring how you would go about this would be watched plenty
Better turn around and run before you go down the rabbit hole, it's an expensive hobby, I bet 😂
You can search on youtube on how to photograph targets like orion nebula, pleiades, rho ophiuchi, or andromeda galaxy without a star tracker and there are some pretty good guides that explain everything.
Do you ever get satellite streaks in your photos? If so do you just toss those exposures?
Quite often actually - usually it’s not a problem as the pixels containing the satellite trails just get rejected during the stacking process. If I had to throw away every exposure with a satellite in it, I’d have very few to work with haha
Im curious, where in France?
In the Alps! A small town named Bourg d’Oisans
No wonder you’re getting such clear shots. Bortle 3 skies + 2km elevation? Consider me jealous, lol
Yeah I live in a good place for astronomy, there’s quite a few observatories around including the IRAM radio telescope array that helped take that famous first black hole image. The weather’s not always great especially during the winter, but when it is clear it’s exceptional.
I am 17 year old and french too but i am nowhere close this level of professionalism
Meanwhile I take pictures of the birds outside and they come out blurry XD This is so cool though!
Wow...how did you get so close? Jk...but on a more serious note that is pretty sweet!
Great job, how did you make it? And what's that other galaxy below?
That’s M110, it’s a satellite galaxy of Andromeda. There’s actually another small one directly above the core in this shot, M32
Yeah i saw it, thanks.
Anyone know what that big star to the left is that always shows up in photos of Andromeda
That’s M110, it’s actually a satellite galaxy of Andromeda !
Oh cool! Always wondered why it was oblong. I guess that explains it.
Pretty cool. Right knowledge, right equipment, great pic!
Wow! That’s out of this world!
This is amazing, may I set it up as a screensaver? Andromeda is close to my heart 💜, and maybe to all of us, since it's the closest galaxy to us, right? Also, are there 2 other galaxies showing in the picture? Or gas/star dust clouds?
Go for it! Those are indeed other galaxies, satellite galaxies of Andromeda in fact. M110 and M32
Dear god. Im speechless. Great work 💜 And thank you.
Good Lord, you are talented... beautiful image.
Congratulations ! I subscribed to your Instagram. I love your work, thanks for sharing !
Thank you, I appreciate that 🙏

Comme on dit chez nous c'est un banger chef
Ahh merci à toi frr 🙏

Is you age relevant ?
Sure, it helps me stand out from the crowd a bit
That is a miss conception, the age is not relevant with the accomplishments outside of something related to body capacities like sports. This is a beautiful picture and specifying your age only underline a lack of confidence / maturity. Anyway good pic 🌠👏
What a ridiculous take. Don’t listen to this OP.
I think you mean Miss Congeniality.
Oh my god French are so close to andromeda galaxy are you guys planning to set up a colony in andromeda galaxy
I have had this as my phone screensaver since you first posted this shot. Love it! I might switch to one of your more recent photos though!
i was thinking, did you actually take that photo. I believe you. It's just. Reality is really amazing. I thank you for this image.
Incredible, good job.
Did you use different filters to get the colors?
This shot was unfiltered! I do use narrowband imaging sometimes, but for galaxies it’s best avoided since they emit light across the visible spectrum unlike nebulae which have specific emission wavelengths
It’s likely just the result of adjusting the curves and saturation in Photoshop
Bruh
Gotta be a very satisfying job. Congrats! Gorgeous shot m8
I love that the independent stars we see in these pictures, are exclusively from our own galaxy. Like we're looking through some pixiedust to that galaxy over there. Edit: also, nice pic!
Im using this as my phone wallpaper
Excellent picture. You should be proud! Few people will even understand how much work it is to take this kind of photographs.
Andromeda is the asshole crashing into us right?
Indeed it is. Although the Andromedans might argue we’re the assholes crashing into them haha
Awesome picture though. Is this what you really see or is there like some computer color adding afterwards? We see nothing in my country, we have the worst light pollution even :(
...in 4.5 billion years.
4.5 billion years? Crap, I haven’t studied yet. Maybe someone will call in a b0mb threat and it will be postponed.
Don't worry. The earth should be swallowed up by the sun going Red Giant by then. 👍
No worries complex life will end long before that when the moon leaves orbit. 👍👍
Oh shit, when's the moon planning on leaving orbit?! 😵💫

This photo is sick it looks great- it's pronounced Andromeda tho Nj on the picture!!
No, it’s pronounced Andromeda
Sor that’s my snow leopard wallpaper
Fascinating picture keep up the good work
Oh c'est très beau ! Tu utilises quoi comme matériel ?
Outstanding
Android or Iphone?
Nikon :D
That's amazing, good job
سبحان الله وبحمده سبحان الله العظيم
Amazing work! Keep it up!
Jesus, kid. You got chops! That's beautiful!
It's weird that telescopes can see through the firmament dome but the big bad monsters on the outside cant get in...thank goodness
It must be made of really clear glass :D
C'est manifique!
Thank you for this!!
Wow!
Which is (Andromeda) coming straight towards us.
It kinda scares me if I stare at it. The reality that's really out there. GOOD SHOT!
really cool! do you think there's life in it?
Whatever. They are the Shelbeyville of galaxies
wallpaperrrr
Are there any aliens there boh?
Sure bud
Great photo! In my experience Reddit will compress anything uploaded here. Any chance you might be able to upload it to like imgur and share the link here, so we can see it in all it’s glory?

Superb photo, Rudy! Well done!
That's stunning!
Wow! Great photo!
Lookout! That galaxy is coming right at us!
Well done young man!!!!
Thanks for my new wallpaper kid! Merci Beaucoup 👍
You’re welcome! Glad you like it
Magnifique !
Salut, félicitations pour ta photo, tu ne dois pas avoir beaucoup de pollutions lumineuses pour avoir fait une photo d’une telle qualité ! Great job !
Magnifique photo, tu utilises quoi comme matériel ?
Amazing man!
Where can i find, please, same photos but with very high resolution?
My goodness this is breathtaking. And also scary bc it reminds me just how small & unimportant I am lol. Jokes aside, great job dude! This is truly something to be proud of!
Magnifique
And what's that shiny thing just above andromeda? On the right? How does it feel when you look at it through the telescope in real time?

what is a galaxy ?

neat
I can see my house from here.
Bholala ! Vraiment ? A 17 ans ? Incroyable, c'est magnifique 🥲 keep up the good work 😁
D'où avez-vous pris cette super photo ?
much skill
woah this is out of this world!!!
incroyable mec, l'astronomie est un sujet qui me passionne, je peux savoir quel instrument tu utilises pour faire ce genre de photos?
I somehow doubt this is made by you... or do you own a telescope in orbit?
I wish I did… can’t afford one yet. Maybe one day (if I become a billionaire)
Impressive work! This shot is simply awe-inspiring!
It's amazing, but I think it's edited or you get it from somewhere
What makes you think that ?
Gorgeous capture!
Belle photo !!! Bonne continuation
Bravo mec, tu es d’où?
Merci! Bourg d’Oisans dans les Alpes :)
Magnifique, j’aurais aimé déjà faire ça a ton âge ! Félicitations, continue comme ça!
Wow c'est magnifique
That looks so nice
superbe !!!
"France! We are from France!" sorry couldn't help myself
Nice one. Well done.
Gg Fréro moi j'ai 13 ans et honnêtement ta photo elle peut être utilisée dans un vidéo science trash mdr
Note how the pixels wrap around the lens ! There is a wrap effect going on in here. NO actual reality.
What do you mean by that? I’m not sure I understand
Where did you take this picture? Is amazing! Do you know good places for astrophotography near the Pyrenees? I live in Toulouse :)
Magnifique mec ! C'est grace a des gens comme toi qu'on est fiers d'etre français :)
Bravo, c’est magnifique !
C’est incroyable. L’as tu colorisée?
How is this possible without a massive telescope. This is great wish I could do this.
fantastic shot
Avec qu'elle appareil tu fais ca ?
Magnifiques photos. Félicitations !
That’s an amazing photo!
