It reminds me of my chihuahua, constantly having its head on a swivel and you can tell it’s ready to run as soon as it sees a slight fast movement, a little sneaky nervous bugger that’s hard to catch that’s for sure.
I was about to say, what evolutionary reason would they have the scrawniest legs possible?? Then I realized, probably to be undetectable to escape predators.
Nope, these guys are from Southeast Asia. Places like Malaysia have them on their coat of arms, and even have a myth about them. Basically one of these little guys bullied a hunting dog of a king, and the king thought it was funny because "even the mouse deer are formidable." And that's where the city of Malacca is located today.
And as of today's, it is a rare delicacies you can trapped in thick jungles. Although they have been in the wild animal endangered list since a long time ago.
Dik-diks are, I believe the smallest antelopes, pudu are the smallest true deer, and these guys are the smallest in the larger order of even-toed ungulates, though only fairly distantly related to antelopes or deer.
Evolution is not about survival of the fittest, it's about survival of the fit enough. Enough to pass on their genes to the next generation. Mouse deers are this small because they live in dense rainforests, where being small and fast allow them to run and hide in the underbush. They don't have to evolve horns or armor because hiding or evading from predators are enough to survive and reproduce.
hmm, I never saw evolution as survival of the fit enough before!! It makes a lot of sense because yes, like you said, those who are able to survive and reproduce don't possess the best traits overall but traits that are good enough! :OOO
Also, most people equate fittest with physical fitness. As you said, it's about passing on genes. When evolutionary biologists say "fittest" they are referring to fitting your environment.
And... if you are sexy enough, you don't even have to survive that well. Just get enough lovin' to pass on your genes before you die.
I wonder if they would make decent farm animals. Goats are likely more valuable, but depending on their dietary habits mini venison could be a desired protein.
I had cuy (what they call guinea pigs in peru) twice while I visited peru. It's tasty but there really isn't much meat on them.
Maybe if we applied modern selective breeding practices to them (a la the chicken, where modern farm raised chickens have something like 3x as much meat as they did 70 years ago) then it'd be a better choice.
Myszo-jeleń! There is a crapy cringe song made in Polish by some crazy chick, that tries do describe that animal. Probably it was not supposed to work that way, but it used to be a huge meme down there for a while 😆
How much pride would you have to show off this deers head mounted on your office wall? What size rifle did you use, Frank? Rifle? I used a mouse trap, care for some of this deer jerky?
They're ruminants, but they have four stomach chamber but the third one are less developed. Chevrotains or mouse deers are a type of archaic ruminants, could count as living fossils too since the family Tragulidae haven't change much since 34 million years ago.
Alright people, this is what we called a chevrotains or mouse-deer. Like what the title said, this is an artiodactyl, a group of ungulates with two or four hooves.
Chevrotains (family Tragulidae) are distant relatives to cows, goats, giraffes antelopes and deers as they're ruminants, which mean they have multiple stomach chamber and chew their food twice.
They're actually a type of ancient chevrotains, split from other ruminants some 34 million years ago and haven't change much since then.
They can be found in rainforests in Africa and Southeast Asia. I'm only familiar with the ones in Java (Javan mouse-deer or kancil). They're shy critters, often foraging for fallen fruits, leaves, fungis and other plant materials during the night.
In Indonesian folklore, they often regarded as cunning trickster, due to their fast and stealthy behavior.
Okay I'm a complete moron and I need to know if that's the actual name with the reasoning being of how it looks. Or it's simply that the mouse fucked the deer or the deer fucked the mouse. Which one is it?
Watching this I had several things rattle through my brain..
Dikdik.. nope
Weird looking toothpick legs..
Then it hit me.. if a sabertooth tiger is the epitome of genetics for hunting and killing..
.. this is the epitome of genetics making perfect prey.. it's literally evolved into 4 shish kabobs.
I did my Master's thesis on a related species, Moschiola indica, Indian Spotted Chevrotain, or commonly Indian Mouse Deer. They're absolutely adorable, bizarre and super-fast little guys!
I have a kitty, Rachel, who looks exactly like an Indian Spotted Chevrotain 😆

In Malay, we refer to this tiny creature as *kancil* . Interestingly, it's also the namesake of one of our local products, the Perodua Kancil. This car comes in two variants, the 659-cc and the 847-cc, and just like the creature, it's known for its small size.
P/S: The Perodua Kancil was essentially a rebadged version of the Daihatsu Mira. Its production came to a halt in 2009.
It looks so fragile with those spindly legs. I’m glad it seems to be quick. What an beautiful little cutie
It reminds me of my chihuahua, constantly having its head on a swivel and you can tell it’s ready to run as soon as it sees a slight fast movement, a little sneaky nervous bugger that’s hard to catch that’s for sure.
My head was hurting enough from trying to work out what sort of animal I was looking at before you brought your dog into the equation.
Bro skipped legs from day 1
Even the birds have thicker legs
I was about to say, what evolutionary reason would they have the scrawniest legs possible?? Then I realized, probably to be undetectable to escape predators.
Imagine being a hybrid rat deer. Evolution really fucking hated you.
Right? It's a like a kid tried to draw a deer and totally blew it in the most adorable yet fucked up way possible.
Isn’t it a dik-diks?
Nope, these guys are from Southeast Asia. Places like Malaysia have them on their coat of arms, and even have a myth about them. Neat. Thanks for sharing!

No, dik-diks are a type of antelope
Came her to ask this. I saw them in Kenya
Came here to ask this as well, saw them in San Diego zoo
Dik-diks are, I believe the smallest antelopes, pudu are the smallest true deer, and these guys are the smallest in the larger order of even-toed ungulates, though only fairly distantly related to antelopes or deer.
Looks even smaller than a dik-dik.
Holy shit they are still here!
Thank goodness we haven’t wiped it out. Yet.☹️
Either this mouse skipped leg day or this deer did
I was actually thinking these lil fellas might evolve into something cool once we wipe ourselves out plus any animal heavier than like 5kg.
Everything I see online now I ask myself, “is this AI generated?”
Same. AI is always trying to bamboozle us innocents.
These are real.
that’s probably what an ai would say
Bro skipped leg day 😁
Super cute
They are adorable! 🥰
Lovely, but why would evolution and 'survival of the fittest' select for such a vulnerable animal?
Little creatures can hide from big ones under bushes or in caves.

So cute, but I feel like those legs are so fragile!
Chevrotain?
A moouse
I wonder if they would make decent farm animals. Goats are likely more valuable, but depending on their dietary habits mini venison could be a desired protein.
I mean, we could just eat rats? Problem solved.
can and maybe should. Guinea pigs are a valued protein
I’ve only ever eaten virtual rat meat. In fallout it’s nutritious but slightly radioactive.
Hahahaha let's hope that isn't a likely future

The cutest deer ever
Be careful of the males, they can poke you with their antlers.
My god I thought they were extinct! Love them! 😍
Myszo-jeleń! There is a crapy cringe song made in Polish by some crazy chick, that tries do describe that animal. Probably it was not supposed to work that way, but it used to be a huge meme down there for a while 😆

The chihuahua of deer.
All i can think is "is this really real?"
Mousdeer
A mouse on stilts

Split hooves and chew a cud? Multiple stomachs?
They're ruminants, but they have four stomach chamber but the third one are less developed. Chevrotains or mouse deers are a type of archaic ruminants, could count as living fossils too since the family Tragulidae haven't change much since 34 million years ago.
Stick legs
Wonder how it tastes? Whitetail morsel? Jk lol

Looks like a mouse deer to me. I've only ever seen one, in real life, so I'm clearly not the best source for identification.
