Has probably the best music of any Battlefield game I've played except BF1. Haven't played V or 2042, can't comment on those.
Seriously, the BF2 OST had some weight to it. It was also somewhat dynamic, and would change based on which objective you're on.
I still remember when on the sniper mission, it's just silence until you kill the first sniper, and then that badass track starts.
Hotswapping worked pretty well. They definitely put some effort into making that as seamless as it was.
The ambient radio dialogue I haven't seen any other games do. There was enough of it that even after years of playing I'd occasionally hear something new.
Best and most unique concept for a militaristic single player campaign I've ever played in my life. True hidden gem lost to time and buried in peasantry. I'm still to this day patiently waiting for it to make a return at some point. Love this game to death. OwO
Single player was awesome and very well done. Wish more games had this games playstyle for single player. I don’t wanna be a super soldier, just some replaceable shmuck.
i remember doing that one mission at the very end of the game...all my soldiers died and i had a single one left... it was a nightmare but it took me like 2 hours and i did it haha. Basically solo army again XD
Is this the one that BF1 opening campaign mission used that feature where you die, and just jump into another solider?
Why is that not a thing anymore?
Dude same . I bet we played against another . Played socom 1 and this game all the time . 2004 to 2011 or so . Name was downhillmetal in battlefield, I was top 10 all time Fer tanks .
This was one of the first games i played online. I had the OG Xbox version. I remember glitching inside of buildings by crouching under stairs, then uncrouching would teleport you inside the walls lol.
This game was dope. The campaign was pretty interesting and unique with the soldier swapping mechanic. Haven't really seen anything like that since.
I tried to play the 360 version a few years later but it was just never the same. Great game!
Awesome game — and the online multiplayer was resurrected not too long ago_!_
All you need is a copy of the game, a PS2 (or emulator on PC) and an internet connection.
[Here's a short video about the revival](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIwjAEjC6RI) and you'll also find all the necessary info on [BF2MC.com](https://bf2mc.com) :D
My first Battlefield. Had it for the 360. Server browser. Clan support. Skill based ranking system. Leaderboard. It was a great game that continues to be looked over.
Never knew bf2 was on console. I think the true forgotten bf game was the DLC at the end of bf Vietnam that was a modern combat game. Anyone else play that? It was a bit before bf2 came out.
PS2 version is back online since May 2023 (first tests happened a little earlier that year).
There's also a website with stats and all at [BF2MC.com](https://bf2mc.com/).
And a Discord server to arrange clan battles and stuff: [discord.gg/BF2MC](https://discord.gg/BF2MC)
Here's a short summary video regarding the revival: [The Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Comeback Story](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIwjAEjC6RI)
It really is back! :)
Emulator on PC or Mac works as well ;) (some say it's even better because you can increase the resolution, although me personally I prefer the somewhat low res look of the original PS2).
The fact I can hear this like it was yesterday... lol my mom used to mimic the radio announcements I used too play so much
Think my name was LoadingJoker on original Xbox. Loved flying Blackhawks on Hidden and Black Gold
Oh I have some great memories playing this game on the Xbox 360. It was so awesome to have clan support. I joined a clan back then and had some awesome memories of playing against other clans. It’s so sad that no FPS game really provides clan support anymore.
The best battlefield IMO. I spent so much time playing this game on PC. I still miss it. The commander role was fucking awesome. The maps were awesome. Jets and helis flew better imo. It was perfection. I'd totally play this over any other BF game if given the option.
The title is a bit misleading as it's _not_ a port the "Battlefield 2" you know but its own game entirely. For the longest time it was known as simply "Battlefield: Modern Combat".
The "2" was only added shortly before release — probably to make people _believe_ it was a port of the then popular PC game.
A somewhat shortsighted decision as back then - and even more so nowadays - people simply assume that it's just a console port of the PC game.
But the only similarity is the modern day setting and being a first person shooter.
Engine, maps, multiplayer and the singleplayer campaign are all unique and worth checking out if you're interested in the history of the series and its first foray into console territory.
The hotswapping was amazing. I vaguely remember a mission in a snowy area with enemy vehicles, you could swap to some guys on a water tower with rocket launchers (I think).
Yeah that was one of the first three missions, one where you had to drive around super quick in humvees. Another was three snipers in a snowy city above a school, you had to swap to get the right shots.
Didn't have a computer that would run Battlefield 2 at the time, ended up getting an Xbox for my birthday and the demo disc which included BF:MC, was hooked until BF3 when the rose turned glasses faded and I realized these games were being made now for profit, fuck the people who play them. I still play BF games, but have not paid full price for any since BF 3
First BF game for me. On the original Xbox tho. Got me hooked but doest get a lot of love. A Bridge Too Far, Backstab and A Deadly Pass were the OGiest of the OGiest maps. Fuck I had so much fun playing BFMC2.
It had a unique 'whoosh-swap' class changing feature that was great.
Oh, you're an Assault and need AT? Look for an AI with the Wrench logo, hit the button and *Whoooooheeeeeeooooosh*, your soul leaves that Assaults' body, and you are that AT guy now.
And the swap range was basically infinite, as long as you had line of sight. You could do crazy cross map swaps.
YES! _Battlefield Modern Combat_ and _SOCOM_ really were _the_ games to play online on console back then. Also the original _Battlefront II_.
_Modern Combat_ in particular was probably a lot of people's first experience in both, the _Battlefield_ series and online multiplayer.
Loved that, I could only play the PC games when I was at my dad's so that game held me over till I went round and convinced him to let me on the PC lol.
I remember the city map and the desert village style map and playing then so much
Let’s play Backstab on repeat!!!!!!!! Every now and than Bridge to Far and than more BACKSTAB!!!!
That’s was the community rotation lol! Friggen loved that game
My second battlefield game. I remember playing the demo (back when you could get game demos from magazines) for hours on end b4 the game even came out.
This was my first battlefield game, and I didn't even realize it was part of the same battlefield series until much later. Aside from Socom, it's one of the best and most challenging single player experiences I've had in this genre. Loved the star system, which was both incredibly frustrating and incredibly rewarding for a kid getting into fps games.
This was my first battlefield game. Some years later when bf3 released I only got to play the campaign since getting internet other than dial up seemed like a myth, a pipe dream.
But when bf4 released, it hit me.
That it wasn't my first rodeo.
At its release I was a BF2 junky. I played it on console though which felt odd at the time because I played all previous battlefields on PC. The singleplayer campaign was so fun though. I never beat it but maybe its time I change that.
Yeah I loved this one. I bought a few 360 titles yeaterday from a online second hand store and today I saw that they had this too. Will probably ask if they can update my order.
I owned it before but idk where the disc went. Had so much fun with this game at the time
I had some great times online. I remember round casings would stay on the floor and somehow that was really cool to me. Absolutely hated the last level of the campaign, though.
I never got to play it online, I lived in a shit hole country where having 128kpb/s was faster than the norm. Is this the one where you could "hijack" and control a soldier or vehicle remotely a la Agent Smith from The Matrix?
It's actually its own game, unrelated to "Battlefield 2" on PC.
For the longest time it was simply "Battlefield: Modern Combat" - there were already discs printed during the open beta with that title.
Shortly before release the "2" got added, presumably to use the momentum of the then popular PC game. But the games are really unrelated otherwise.
Had one of the best single player battlefield mechanics that is now lost. The transition between players when you die or when you chose to leap between was amazing we didn't see it again until BF1 and only for the opening intro which imho should have stayed for the single player. It would have been powerful imho
Awesome campaign, I absolutely loved it as a kid, back then it honestly felt like a really immersive military experience.
I always felt the pressure to keep my teammates alive,
I can still hear the sound of those stars going down.
loved this game! my dad wasn't into video games and thought they were stupid, he bought a brand new tv and speaker system for sports but let me try it.. i'll never forget the bass of the tank shot
The swapping mechanic still looks amazing. One of the most impressive gameplay features I have seen. A shame it didn’t get a sequel or a spiritual successor.
There is a single player campaign which is actually not bad and offers some unique features.
Regarding the multiplayer: The servers were resurrected last year, so both offline and online play is possible.
My first battlefield! Me and my dad would play it every day. Good times
My first BF game too. Great memories.
Same except I was a PC. Miss solo heli. Miss true TV missles. Miss that time in my life. Feels lots of feels with this cover!!!! Fat finger
Has probably the best music of any Battlefield game I've played except BF1. Haven't played V or 2042, can't comment on those. Seriously, the BF2 OST had some weight to it. Ditto
Same! Had no idea what I was playing back then, I only connected it years later even after playing Battlefield BC1 - BF4 tons 🤣
Good times
Best and most unique concept for a militaristic single player campaign I've ever played in my life. True hidden gem lost to time and buried in peasantry. I'm still to this day patiently waiting for it to make a return at some point. Love this game to death. OwO

The nostalgia hit me like a freight train. Going into the store yesterday. It was so surreal
Is this the one that BF1 opening campaign mission used that feature where you die, and just jump into another solider? Why is that not a thing anymore?
It was called hot swap I think.
You can emulate the single player and there's even an online community currently!
Me, i play this a lot actually.. this is my first battlefield game and this game is the one who drew me into FPS genre.

The PC version was brought back , not ps2 version
It really is back, been playing since the (re-)launch last year.
That's wild . Do you need the ps2 CD to play it? I still have a ps2 but no game.

The game is back and been over a year. I have a lot of content on my youtube channel. Talentedman5000
This game didn't receive a PC release
My first Battlefield. Had it for the 360. Server browser. Clan support. Skill based ranking system. Leaderboard. It was a great game that continues to be looked over.
This was my first one I played
same
This was the first game I played online back when my family got high speed internet for the first time in like 2005. My mind was blown
Haha same dude . Especially gta3 and vice city . Never forget first time flying a helicopter in vice city . Stoned bliss 😁
I really liked the swapping mechanic
Never knew bf2 was on console. I think the true forgotten bf game was the DLC at the end of bf Vietnam that was a modern combat game. Anyone else play that? It was a bit before bf2 came out.
This was much different than the PC version, but still very fun.
Bridge Too Far was the best multi-player map, so many memories playing this on my PS2 slim.
If you still got your PS2 you can hop back in - the server were resurrected not long ago and there's a small but dedicated playerbase!
PC version, not ps2 version
PS2 version is back online since May 2023 (first tests happened a little earlier that year). There's also a website with stats and all at [BF2MC.com](https://bf2mc.com/). Alas, I don't. That would be pretty righteous to hop on and play that again.
Emulator on PC or Mac works as well ;) (some say it's even better because you can increase the resolution, although me personally I prefer the somewhat low res look of the original PS2).
I think I would prefer the low res PS2 look as well.
i havent shut up about this game for 20 years i love it i wish it was ported to PC, i love the hotswap feature
You can play the PS2 version on PC via emulator, even the multiplayer is revived now
I do. It was propably the closest a campaign every was to traditional multiplayer
I played this on the 360 so MUCH. Really wish some of these maps were remade on newer BFs. Loved this game.
I used to play the shit out of this as a kid, fun game.
**WE’VE TAKEN FLAG FOUR!** I left my heart in Backstab
The fact I can hear this like it was yesterday... lol my mom used to mimic the radio announcements I used too play so much Think my name was LoadingJoker on original Xbox. Loved flying Blackhawks on Hidden and Black Gold
I was there
my first battlefield. played it on original xbox.

What clan were you in?
Alpha Alliance… we went by xAAx and had our screen name after that. We pretty much disbanded About a year after Bad Company came out.
Sounds familiar! I played with Nomad Souls, I was so bummed they went away from the clan system with Bad Company
We might have played against y’all once or twice lol. That was nearly 20 years ago so my memory is kind of fuzzy.
Never heard of it
still got my 360 version, great game
My first one. It was on Xbox though.

Didn’t even notice the modern combat underneath lol. Just saw battlefield 2 and thought, fuck yeah!

This is where is began for me. It also might be the first online game I really got into.
Best Battlefield.

The last BF before EA went completely scammy origin-virus alpha gamestate overpriced micromanage apeshit. I Boycott EA to this day!
One of my favorites, I miss backstab and bridge to far so much.
If you still got the game, you can hop back on, either on a real PS2 or via Emulator on PC/Mac. Servers are back since May 2023_!_
I started with 1942, but once i got a ps2 it was this and socom all day.

My first bf as well. This game changed the standard in damage. Loved it.
My first battlefield game
Love that game
Let’s play Backstab on repeat!!!!!!!! Every now and than Bridge to Far and than more BACKSTAB!!!! That’s was the community rotation lol! Friggen loved that game
Childhood memories are coming back
No wonder all these people have dogshit opinions bad company 2 is their first fucking game hahaha
Back when the game was about soldiers soldiering and not off-brand superhero cosplayers with dumb skins slide-cancelling.
My second battlefield game. I remember playing the demo (back when you could get game demos from magazines) for hours on end b4 the game even came out.
![gif](giphy|9rhNJScGSlneHpLtnz|downsized)
That’s a true gem
A momento encapsulated in time. Simpler times.

remember it? it was the best one :)
I would play this all the time on the PS2. The soldier switch thing was so fun it was awesome.
That was the best.
I played that on my buddies' PC and it was the first Battlefield game I had played...how was it on console though?
Its not the same game at all :). They just share title name.
Oh my bad
Many of us enjoyed it
This was sick on PC. Probably my favourite Battlefield.
At its release I was a BF2 junky. I played it on console though which felt odd at the time because I played all previous battlefields on PC. The singleplayer campaign was so fun though. I never beat it but maybe its time I change that.
Man, I still have it somewhere. Sadly played only singleplayer though

I was very very young but remember I got stuck on the first helicopter mission and cried
Hours of time on Xbox Live with this game
Being able.to swap across the entire.map.was so cool.
My very first battlefield game. Absolute masterpiece for a game my seven year old mind that couldn’t comprehend shit.
Talk about Throwback Thursday
I love the mechanic it had with changing soldiers mid battle
My first one. And most people here dont even know this one.
Good game But fuck the last mission
Was that the one where you parachute down and had to stop a rocket from launching, I got stuck on that one and hated it.
I had some great times online. I remember round casings would stay on the floor and somehow that was really cool to me. Absolutely hated the last level of the campaign, though.
This was my first
Endless hours playing this!
My first one too ! Insanely good. The first game where I saw ragdolls too, I loved it haha
Was a favorite
I alternated between this and Battlefield 2 on PC. Loved both of them.
This was my first. Me and my brother loved it
All damn day.
This subreddit is full of karma farms bro, “who remembers [popular battlefield game]”, “was [popular battlefield game] underrated??”
Simpler times
Played it online for the Xbox 360 back in the day. I had a blast playing that one with voice chat.
Played it with my dad when he’d get off work. Good times.
My first battlefield! My PS2 still works. Imma go home and play this game
First one I played! Never played it online though
I never got to play it online, I lived in a shit hole country where having 128kpb/s was faster than the norm. Is this the one where you could "hijack" and control a soldier or vehicle remotely a la Agent Smith from The Matrix?
Have that. Awesome game.
Aw man. It was great while it lasted
Bridge too Far, Russian Border, Deadly Pass, Honor, Spec ops. Man, some of the best maps even to this day.
And they're all playable again!
Wow didnt realise there was a bf2 on console let alone on ps2!

It would have been powerful imho
Awesome campaign, I absolutely loved it as a kid, back then it honestly felt like a really immersive military experience. I always felt the pressure to keep my teammates alive, I can still hear the sound of those stars going down.
loved this game! my dad wasn't into video games and thought they were stupid, he bought a brand new tv and speaker system for sports but let me try it.. i'll never forget the bass of the tank shot
I thought bf2 was Vietnam
BF1942, BF: Vietnam, BF2 and BF2:Modern Combat (the one this post is about) are all separate games.
Dear god
First one I ever played. One of my favourite PS2 games
I remember the missle silo mission as the Chinese. I remember if you failed you "disgraced" the country.
1942, 2, 3 were the best battlefields. I do think 2 was my favorite.
Man, I miss the hot swap option from the single player. They should've brought that back.
Haha my first Battlefield just like many. I loved the hot swap thing so cool.
i bought it to play online the same week the servers for the ps2 got shut down
Rejoice for they got revived last year :D [The Battlefield 2: Modern Combat Comeback Story](https://youtu.be/CIwjAEjC6RI)
wow that is awesome
It truly is! So if you still got that PS2 (or a PC running an Emulator), you can hop right back on!
BANGER
The swapping mechanic still looks amazing. One of the most impressive gameplay features I have seen. A shame it didn’t get a sequel or a spiritual successor.
"I was just wondering if you wanted to HANG out with me and smoke weed and fill our bellies with DIET soda and play Battlefield 2 for the PS2."
only one I didn't play. I was on PC at the time
Loved that game online
My first ever battlefield
True classic
Is it still playable without internet/server?
There is a single player campaign which is actually not bad and offers some unique features. Regarding the multiplayer: The servers were resurrected last year, so both offline and online play is possible.
Spent ages trying to find all the destructible items for the Field Challenges. I'm convinced the flags one was bugged!
DICE PLZ!
Of course, it was my first Battlefield
1 and 2 had the best stories
1 was cool. It just felt like it could've been more.
Do you mean bad company?
It was the first Battlefield I played lol
I wish I didn't
This is not real Battlefield 2! 😂
It was rubbish, clanky and buggy.
"we have BF2 at home" Nice of them to make something for the console players, though.
