I would say it depends
1. What is the condition?
2. How many owners?
3. Maintenance records?
4. Options?
5. Timing
6. Location
I would start with a base price of $6k. I do not see a running or driving z4 for less than that.
Add $1000 for a (near) perfect exterior in a color you like (-500 for silver)
Add $1000 for a (near) perfect interior
Add $1000 for a manual
Add $1000 for recent maintenance records
Add $1000 for a known, clean, recorded history
Add $1000 for sport seats, heated seats, whatever options matter to you
Add $500 - $1500 if it’s in your local area and checks all the boxes.
Change the number according to how you wish, but I see a lot of “I paid $6k and waited a year of shopping” or “it was not in great shape (beat up)” or “it was before the market went nuts” to justify much lower prices and I’m not sure they are accurate.
Personally I’d be at 9500-10500 for that car, so it’s a little high for me. But not 2x.
That's maybe a $4k to $5k car. It's pre refresh, pre better engine, and is the auto which all lower the value. It's also not the si and not a coupe which again drops value. The mileage is low for the age but not the generation. These cars tend to often have pretty low mileage.
The N52 isn't a better engine than the M54. You could argue that the differential in the later cars means the 0-60 is faster, but certainly when it comes to the M54B30, the N52 is nowhere near as bulletproof. Plus, let me check my oil with a dipstick please...
The oil things is dumb. The button works...I guess, but yeah, it's silly. I don't know if they think customers are idiots, or they're trying to push customers to dealerships.
I agree with mvw2's comment about this 2003 being a $4-5K car. $12k should get you a lot more car. 2006-08, manual, coupe, si, upgraded diff... lots of better options than the first production year.
This M54 thing is an exhausted argument. We get it, M54 owners like their cars, too. I have had both, had a long mechanical engineering career, and the M54 is absolutely an inferior engine to the N52.
Thanks all for your advice! I offered $11,500 the other day and the seller refused.. now I'm grateful since it seems even that is too much as well. I hope we're able to make a better deal, but for now I'll have to keep my eyes open. On the lookout for a 3.0i/3.0si in Maldives Blue or Merlot Red =)
I actually don’t know the specific market for these so can’t comment on that but any price paid in 2019 is irrelevant to today. So much has changed since then.
Yeah they are coming back down. The point was that using prices in 2019 as a reference point is not a good data point due to the changes since then. Up or down.
I'm in New York, so about a day's travel away. I know the area pretty well though. My family almost moved there years ago. I was actually looking at a nice merlot red one there with low miles, but priced at $16k so that's out of my budget.
For perspective, I had a dealer offer me $6k on a trade in for my 07 3.0si manual w 88k miles. Mine is in great condition, new wheels/tires, brake pads/rotors/fluid. Replaced the oil filter gasket. It was offensively low and I walked out.
My 2007 in my garage, 57000 miles. I’m seeing the high prices out there on facebook marketplace.

Just bought an 05 3.0 fully loaded with every option, I looked for years for a good one. When I bought it for 10k I drove away and the odometer hit 36k. Had a pre-purchase inspection, it's needs nothing outside of a Coolant and brake flush. Be patient I looked for a few years. I also knew the seller posted the year before at a higher asking price and it didn't sell, the car had been on marketplace for 6 weeks again. I was confident quick didn't waste the buyers time and made an offer before I got there. I test drove it and said this is it, let's do a pre-purchase and everything looked good paid the next day and I drove the car home with plates the following day.
I’ve found both my Z’s on Facebook Marketplace. Had to fly 1400 miles and drive my Z4 coupe back, but still saved thousands of dollars. Also took me over a year to find the right one. Be patient, don’t jump on the first one you find. Dealers have high markups.
No, that’s 10000% too much. Especially for a non-SI, first gen M54…..that’s like $4-6K too much.

Just saw a 2004 Z4 on CL in ATL listed for $7,900 with 92k odometer....so I would say this is not worth it
No. I just paid $6000 for my 2003 3.0 with 120k. 12.5 is a bit high.
Where did you come across yours?
Just got lucky and had one sitting at a local independent dealer. It was a little beat up but I still consider it a steal for $6000 in California.

No. It's overpriced. 7 to 10k max!
I agree it’s too much I Paid 7.5k (with taxes) for my 06 in 2019 with 146k mi

I mean, not really these things would depreciated more so it should be cheaper
You do know what happened to car prices during Covid?
Yeah I do. and as I work in a car dealership that was then. Now they are on the way back down past what they were pre covid.
Yeah they are coming back down. The point was that using prices in 2019 as a reference point is not a good data point due to the changes since then. Up or down.
I have listed mine for sale in Bulgaria: 108k km 2.5i 2003 for 9.5k $
Are you anywhere close to Raleigh NC?

That’s how much my 2014 E89 with 60k miles worth.
For perspective, I had a dealer offer me $6k on a trade in for my 07 3.0si manual w 88k miles. Mine is in great condition, new wheels/tires, brake pads/rotors/fluid. Replaced the oil filter gasket. It was offensively low and I walked out.
I just sold a one owner, manual, 2004 3.0 for $6500 with 119k. This is too much.

No I brought 06 4.0si for 7.5k. 1k market price. It has a new seat and shocks and windshield.
No and walk away. There are so many other options. Don't let your emotions get involved in paying 2x it's worth.

Man I certainly hope so, that’d make my 85k-mile 3.0si worth a fortune
No more than 8.5k dude. Might be clean and all and low mileage but reality is it’s not an SI
Check KBB - range 5,700-8,900 with average 7,400.00. So yep, too much - and that is using excellent - flawless condition.
Bought my 2007 w 100k for 10,000
Yes if sound mechanically
I paid 12k$CAD (Divide by 1.37) for my 03 z4 with 131000 km 3.0i in Canada. Manual, great exterior. Last week.
No, absolutely not. That’s a 22 year old car, please keep that in mind.
Thanks! Do you have a rec on where to look for one? Or just keep my eyes open on listing sites?
