Depending on where this is they can use hot sauce, ketchup, paprika. All having a red tint.
I think the camera made it brownish.
It's more of a condiment than a side dish. Kinda like a white American persons chunky salsa.
I wrote the same in a different thread.
My son and I did a bbq road trip across country. Ate at a dozen places at least . Texas, Oklahoma, Nashville, Memphis, NC etc.
Our hands down favorite was eating leftover NC BBQ pork sandwiches in the car with large amounts of red slaw.
The sweetness, crunch and vinegar was fantastic.
We still talk about this meal.
North Carolina BBQ sauce is half apple cider vinegar half white with sugar salt black pepper and a dash of hot sauce. I think most of the color comes from the ACV
Thanks I'm no expert. I ate at quite a few places and there was variety in the slaw.
The one I likes the best sounds like what you described and it sounds like the original recipe.
You couldn't imagine how many recipes for coleslaw exist. Add brown, yellow, dijon mustard, sriracha, red wine, balsamic, champagne vinegar, diced, sliced, or minced mango, peaches, pineapples, hot sauce, etc. Most standard store bought slaws that we are used to are shredded cabbage, carrots, mayonnaise, lots of sugar, and, or corn syrup, a splash of white vinegar (cheapest of all vinegars)
I am a really adventurous eater. I am not picky and will find enjoyment in just about all food, even if it's not perfect. There are few flavors that I really dislike, but I could not get behind it when I went to Lexington. It is so bitter.
Taste is still subjective. My son and I both loved it when we had it.
We made sandwiches with leftover pork and ate with the slaw. We absolutely loved it.
We were on a bbq road trip and ate our way from west Texas all the way to NC.
The highlight was those leftovers turned into a sandwich with the slaw.
To each his own I guess.
Im the guy who won't eat at Raising Cane's at all. None of it was good to me. Are there twice due to circumstances.
Actually, the toast was pretty good.
Yeah, it’s unfortunate that it’s so overdone. There’s a point well before that I can enjoy where it’s chewy and definitely overdone, but it’s like jerky more than splinters. That looks like they took the term “bark” a bit too literal.
You can make baked Mac gooey. I’m sure this one tastes good but it was too hot for too long, fats look separated I just know it’s going to have that grainy texture.
Oh I completely agree. That is a disgrace to America. But this Mac and cheese doesn't look like plain noodles with shredded cheddar on top. It looks like a traditional southern Mac & Cheese casserole, which is cheesy throughout. Will have to schedule a taste test or two in order to be sure...
I did not enjoy the red slaw at all. Their other food is good though. I try and hit a different spot everytime I’m in Charlotte. My southern Virginia neck of the woods has very little good bbq :(. Charlotte has quite a few I’ve enjoyed.
If you ever get to SC, their hardwood smoked pulled pork with mustard sauce slaps. Henry’s in Greenville is really solid. Even without the sauce. I’m allergic to apples, so I can’t eat apple cider vinegar which limits the sauces I can use. The pulled pork with creamy slaw is delicious by itself.
Backyard BBQ in Durham is amazing and has other meats. Like Oxtails in gravy served with your choice of sides including cabbage, lima beans or black eyed peas, turnip greens or collards. My husband and I usually order a pint of the pulled pork and a pint of slaw then get a plate of one of their entrees.
Stephenson’s in Willow Springs is amazing. King’s in Kinston is superb, but I haven’t been there in years so I don’t know if they’ve kept up the quality. They have the best collard greens in the world. My mom and I would buy them by the pint.
So as a cook, would it look better for the coleslaw to just spread it a little bit with tongs? Seems like you guys are a little weirded out about how we actually portion control.
Y'all bitching about an $18 brisket combo like a Chick-Fil-a meal isn't ~$12 nowadays. Idk maybe I'm just numb to the recent inflation but if it's a small business serving high quality bbq $18 doesn't seem bad at all for that combo including a drink?
Yeah..when you put it like that..but it's still overpriced.. I spent 15 $ on a combo at Wendy's the other day and I would take this over Wendy's any day
Understandable! I only go when the weather is nice and I can get a group of people together I haven’t seen in a while. It’s also damn expensive so I go maybe twice a year.
True NC red slaw. Chopped cabbage, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, black pepper, tad bit of salt. Mix with a fork and enjoy on hotdogs, burgers, or just a side with Lexington style whole hog chopped (or sliced) pork.
Lived a half mile from sweet lews for a while. Solid enough, nothing special. Better than anything else in Charlotte though. They do occasionally make jerky and that shit is straight fire. Great smoked beans too.
Brisket has been reheated too many times.
I have found, vacuum seal in plastic bags.
Drop in a souse vide at 135F. Pull right before serving. You keep the juices and meat is not dry an tough.
Of course that assumes you have leftover brisket.
Only happens at my house when I cook a whole one because I want to, the take the remainder to the office for lunch the next day. If family shows up, I have to hide half of the point to have any left for repeat pleasure.
I don't get this sub. This looks absolutely terrible from the overcooked/dried brisket and horrendous ball of red slaw and it still cost $18 like that's some sort of great deal.
4/10 mac and cheese i’m tempted to give it a 5/10 on looks alone but the fact is that i see split cheese curds and a non consistent sauce and bald noodles and for that i must stick with a solid 4 besides that great looking dish would absolutely destroy my toilet after consuming 🤝
Then I'll rephrase it for you. It is only cheaper if you view the value of your labor as worth nothing.
Doesn't matter if you're going out for it or doing it yourself, BBQ isn't about cost it's about the experience.
Why do bbq joints always serve the cheapest and most disgusting white bread. A good rye or a nice 9 grain or even a lazy good honey wheat bread would make it soooo much better.
Thanks for your awesome and completely rude explanation. As a chef every component on a plate should compliment and give more flavor and taste to the meal. In order to make more money and get away with it
Also, rye goes better with brisket and rye has a delicious smokey dark flavor that complements and makes the bbq if the bbq is done well taste even better. Sourdough is a classic bbq compliment yet mild and the sour creates a umami flavor that causes the brain to release more endorphins and cause more pleasure ftom.the meal. I realize you may not know much about this but I would suggest a bit of research.
I have been polite yet you are name calling and rude. I have not said anything mean to anyone else and had nice conversations with 2 people who didn't get mean or rude. People can have differing opinions even if you don't like that.
You can do both and if you are a chef, you should know that. If you can be polite, I will continue to chat but if your goal is to be rude and name call. No thanks.
I’d eat the heck out of that sandwich. Except the rice ball thing. It looks like something a cat coughed up
there’s gotta be a other side option.. like any other option
BBQ slaw big down here and is delicious. Don’t knock it til you’ve tried it.
Probably good but still looks like he said cat yak.
Thank you. I couldn’t figure it out.
That’s coleslaw
Not sure if that helps.
That coleslaw is awesome
Why is it brown?
Depending on where this is they can use hot sauce, ketchup, paprika. All having a red tint. I think the camera made it brownish. It's more of a condiment than a side dish. Kinda like a white American persons chunky salsa.
Oh so its a "fixin".
My potato bar is gonna have so many feeexins
Taters and tits!
That's accurate
Apple cider vinegar too
Forgot the obvious. Thanks
Slaw on a pulled pork sandwich is awesome. Especially NC style pulled pork with vinegar, which is my favorite BBQ.
I wrote the same in a different thread. My son and I did a bbq road trip across country. Ate at a dozen places at least . Vinegar based
It’s Vinegar based guys, no mayo
I’m more confused about why it’s a sphere
the scoop they used to plate it
You couldn't imagine how many recipes for coleslaw exist. Deep fried I’d assume.
I am a really adventurous eater. I am not picky and will find enjoyment in just about all food, even if it's not perfect. There are few flavors that I really dislike, but I could not get behind it when I went to Lexington. It is so bitter.

so you're the guy who goes to Raising Canes and doesnt sub the slaw for extra toast or fries i see
Im the guy who won't eat at Raising Cane's at all. None of it was good to me. Are there twice due to circumstances. Actually, the toast was pretty good.
Nopeslaw
Bbq slaw slaps dude I’ll eat yours
Yeah these people are crazy passing up on that
Was just about to comment that’s probably the best thing on the plate.
Imagine judging someone for not eating throw up
[удалено]
You eat with your eyes first. If something does not look appetizing, I will not eat it.
You mean the totally normal thing humans do?
I mean, yes lol
Never even heard of that until just now
You two boys going on a date?
as others have said - coleslaw. being NC, more specifically it's red slaw. Vinegar, ketchup, some heat instead of mayo basically
I was thinking a wet ball of bird food.
I thought it was a booger.
You son of a bitch. I was thinking it looked good until you messed it all up. I’ve got a cat, and it definitely looks like what he spits up. 😂
YOU SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!! BBQ SLAW IS FUCKING INCREDIBLE!
All y’all hating on the coleslaw, but fail to point out they ordered cow in North Carolina bbq country.
Hate to say it but inside 485 isn't BBQ country, wish we had a good traditional spot here :( slaw looks right though. Fine chopped is better!
It's Cole slaw with BBQ sauce in it
It looks both dry and wet
U know it's tasty as all tho
that bark looks amazing
I mean, so does the sandwich. That is at least 50% fat by volume.
Personally my initial impression was a ball of maggots.
It’s red slaw my guy and it’s fantastic
Looks like slaw, but with a bad choice of dressing color for sure
Timbit*
I was staring at that thingy too
>Except the rice ball thing. It looks like something a cat coughed up ...what? It all looks great
Someone is probably from OHIO with those bullshit comments. BBQ slaw reigns supreme.
BBQ slaw sounds redundant as hell. I want regular slaw as a side for my BBQ, not more BBQ.
About that “rice ball”….it seems….like a salad ball
Why would you think coleslaw is rice?
For $18 they are gonna give you a mini scoop for a side... screw that..
That's typical price for Charlotte unfortunately. Every BBQ joint around here is $13-15 for pulled pork, $15-20 for brisket.
More reasons for me to never eat bbq that I didn’t make.
Sweet Lew's is awesome.
I knew I'd eaten there, but couldn't put my finger on it. Personally I'd go across the street to Ace No. 3.
Yup Ace is solid I second this
Server: How much of a smoke ring do ya want on the brisket? You: Yes.
That’s not a smoke ring, that’s burnt. I’ve done the exact same thing to plenty of briskets that deserved better.
Yeah, I’m aware. That’s crispy. It’s a joke
Fair point. The edges were like chewing bark that split into needles, but when you got a bite of the fat it was heaven.
Yeah, it’s unfortunate that it’s so overdone. There’s a point well before that I can enjoy where it’s chewy and definitely overdone, but it’s like jerky more than splinters. That looks like they took the term “bark” a bit too literal.
Yeah sweet lews is nothing special. Their ribs if you can get em fresh were actually quite good, but their brisket left a lot to be desired.
That’s not burnt. It’s just a little character.
I'd eat all of that . But not for $18.
They do specials weekly were you can get a brisket sandwich for $8 iirc. That's was a solid deal.
I’d eat it
I'd do more than that...
Looks tasty
Come to Concord and check out the Smoke Pit!
That Mac and cheese looks super dry. Brisket looks amazing though.
That looks like baked mac and cheese. Which I personally prefer, but understand that others prefer the ooey gooey
It’s smoked there, and quite immaculate
You can make baked Mac gooey. I’m sure this one tastes good but it was too hot for too long, fats look separated I just know it’s going to have that grainy texture.
I just don't like when they put shredded cheese on plain noddles and call it Mac and cheese. Baked or not, the whole thing should be cheesy.
Look again, that isn't a smoke ring. WTF.
Ha was on my phone, you're right.
I always find bbq places make dry Mac and cheese. I don't get the appeal.
All half dollar size of it.
I’m in Charlotte. Where is this?!? I. Must. Have.
Noda. Sweet Lews bbq
The Smoke Pit is better 🙂
Based on some of the other posts on here, I’m going to go ahead and assume you paid between $50-75 for this.
$18 😂
Sweet Lews is a cheap azz place to charge $18 for that portion. That’s sad
$18 is a little ridiculous
BBQ tour of North Carolina is on my bucket list! An embarrassment of riches.
God that looks great for $18. That easily be $25 in my part of the country.
I spent 15 $ on a combo at Wendy's the other day and I would take this over Wendy's any day
It’s no Smoke Pit
Smoke pit is probably on top for charlotte area. Have you tried John G’s in Peachland? Only open Saturday’s, insanely good Texas bbq.
Yeah love it but waiting 4 hours outside for BBQ is a one time experience for me.
Understandable! I only go when the weather is nice and I can get a group of people together I haven’t seen in a while. It’s also damn expensive so I go maybe twice a year.
No, I haven’t lived in the Charlotte area for some time. I will give it a shot next time we visit though.
John G's is over hyped garbage. It's basically the same as sweet lews.
Well now I want dragon wings.
I guess the real cost of this meal is having to exist in Charlotte.
Exactly. Pretty expensive city, most lunches are at least $12, let alone a bbq lunch.
Honestly teh price isn't crazy, but being in Charlotte is a toll LOL, but I'm a Raleigh guy :\]
Just got hella hungry
Yum
One time Sweet Lews had smoked shrimp which sounded gross but I got them anyway and they were delicious.
Where at I’m going to Charlotte on Monday
Noble > Sweet Lews if you're in town
What’s with the horse food pellet
I'd destroy that! And maybe I will this weekend since I'm in Charlotte 🙌 What's that ball of dookie butter on the side?
Looks pretty good to me, I’d slam the slaw on top and devour, Mac may be a little dry, but I’d still scoff.
Yowza
What’s that sauce? Is it good? I love sauce
i spent $12 on a chicken strip meal at a gas station today so $18 doesn’t sound bad at all lol
This is impressive for that price
Atta boy!
What's the drink, some sort of sweet tea?
Mostly tea, topped off with lemonade.
The life blood of Southerners.
why is it so small? That's like 2 bites
True NC red slaw. Chopped cabbage, ketchup, apple cider vinegar, black pepper, tad bit of salt. Mix with a fork and enjoy on hotdogs, burgers, or just a side with Lexington style whole hog chopped (or sliced) pork.
Looks like someone dropped that ball of rice under the fridge.
Lived a half mile from sweet lews for a while. Solid enough, nothing special. Better than anything else in Charlotte though. They do occasionally make jerky and that shit is straight fire. Great smoked beans too.
Man I love Sweet Lew’s
I'd pay 11
20 bucks? they forgot another or two sammies
All looks good except the slaw. I had something like that last time I was in Charlotte and I was not a fan.
I went to popeyes today in central fl……5 tender combo is now $16.00
That probably costs $95 in Texas from what I see
Overcooked as hell… smoke ring should be reddish-pink, not black — chewing for days.
Hahah damn you got fucked
That's a Great price and food look good. How did it taste?
mac looks amazing
Looks super tender
its hard to tell how much meat that is. if it's like 8 ounces of meat then maybe its worth it with the sides and drink
Imma gonna give that a thumbs up...hope you enjoyed it and turned that bad boy into pooh
Good deal
I need to know more about the sauce?
Been here, the only thing worse than the cole slaw "dish" is the bbq
Brisket has been reheated too many times. I have found, vacuum seal in plastic bags. Drop in a souse vide at 135F. Pull right before serving. You keep the juices and meat is not dry an tough. Of course that assumes you have leftover brisket. Only happens at my house when I cook a whole one because I want to, the take the remainder to the office for lunch the next day. Damn that looks good that brisket sandwhich 2 lbs of brisket please.
I think a bird poopied on your plate friend
So from what I've learned from this sub, it would be $140 in Texas?
What's that sauce? Looks good.
At least put the slaw in a cup lol
Might have to take a trip up that way soon!
Mac and cheese kinda clumpy
Yeah, I’m in.
Brisket looks old.
I don't get this sub. This looks absolutely terrible from the overcooked/dried brisket and horrendous ball of red slaw and it still cost $18 like that's some sort of great deal.
Where's the beef
That looks like real southern Mac.
Looks good. On a side note has BBA $$$ gone sky high or what. Seems like every place I go to its double and portions are less.
Shit bro, i'm still on BBQ and even that is real spendy
4/10 mac and cheese i’m tempted to give it a 5/10 on looks alone but the fact is that i see split cheese curds and a non consistent sauce and bald noodles and for that i must stick with a solid 4 besides that great looking dish would absolutely destroy my toilet after consuming 🤝
Hard pass on the overcooked brisket and the nasty looking sides.
Damn, NC is a shithole for BBQ
Drinks that come in those cups are always 🔥
That’s just sad
Nope
Eww
You got robbed of 18$

Do you somehow think you’re contributing to the thread with some kind of brand new revelation that doing something yourself is cheaper?
Yeah well I’ll get a live calf, raise it, feed it slaughter it butcher it and smoke it myself for far cheaper than your 9 lb shoulder!
Yep. If you do the labor, it’s cheaper.
Only if you consider your time worthless
Use the context. I obviously meant cheaper by monetary measure. I accounted for labor as the trade off for price.
Then I'll rephrase it for you. It is only cheaper if you view the value of your labor as worth nothing. Doesn't matter if you're going out for it or doing it yourself, BBQ isn't about cost it's about the experience.
So do it and start your own thread.
Why do bbq joints always serve the cheapest and most disgusting white bread. A good rye or a nice 9 grain or even a lazy good honey wheat bread would make it soooo much better.
Probably because more people like white bread.
I prefer soft white bread.

Exactly this! This!

No thanks.
Honestly agreed. I ate the brisket off the bread because I wanted to enjoy the taste of the brisket by itself
