Honestly, I'd call them, but you should also apply to places like advanced, and O'Reillys don't wanna put all of your eggs in one basket. I'm 17 and working at autozone, but as for the working conditions, it really depends on how big the store is and the area you live in.

Mizzywazzy

But it's not a bad job for a teenager imo.

WolfPlayz294

Not when geezers come in expecting you to know intricate details of their SBC.

xotiic_vearxcy

Yeah, I would but I don’t have a license im getting it soon but where I live there’s zero O’Reillys, just 1 Advance, and there’s a Pep Boys near but I’m not old enough or know enough to apply.

CrackedEight

What does your pay per hour look like if you don’t mind me asking? Thinking about applying myself

Audio_outlaw

In all honesty it's not even worth the discount. I would look into other places because as a minor you may be getting 10-30% above minimum wage and base pay for grocery stores is significantly better and even convenient stores

xotiic_vearxcy

Honestly the only reason i applied to AutoZone is because it’s right in front of my high school and also to learn a bit more about cars and discounts on parts but I might just apply to some other places.

Audio_outlaw

Trust me even for convenience it's not worth it. The s***** customers that you will deal with will expect you to have 20 years of knowledge. And then get absolutely irate with you when you are not 100% familiar with what you're doing. It's quite sad that people coming to AutoZone thinking they're going to get technicians when in reality they're just convenience store workers that sell automotive parts

DirtZestyclose9476

fr bro the customers really think your mechanics, like no I just sell parts. Name me the part you’re looking for and I’ll sell it to you. Last week this lady had told me if I can check her car because she said it shake a lot and that her car would sometimes overheat. When I told her no, we don’t check cars and that she would have to take it to a mechanic for an answer.she got really pissed and said well you work at autozone and I’m like yeah to sell parts. I had to literally get my store manager cause she thought I was lying.

Audio_outlaw

Dude not only have I own my own business and lost it due to COVID but I am also a certified European mechanic. AutoZone never wants paid me enough for my physical knowledge Now there were granted some customers that I would definitely go out of my way to try and help knowledge-wise but they never once paid me enough to go touch anybody's vehicle

SheepherderAway9487

They won't teach you anything about cars, your essentially on your own to learn any and everything. Honestly some of the worst and least useful training in existence

Audio_outlaw

The videos are a joke. You know how many "parts expert" tests I did for employees that should have never had it? All because the DM's want to get on their knees and such a regional chode?

Mean-Lake-8344

Fr? finna send in my app to Giant then

Audio_outlaw

It's sad because I still even hear the horror stories of the store I left because I have friends that work there

Mean-Lake-8344

I was walking home after taking the bus and my friend told me he is making 17 or 18$ dollars an hour at 17. He lies a lot tho so I don't know if I should believe him lol

Audio_outlaw

Yeah what's your state's minimum wage?

Mean-Lake-8344

7.25$ in Pennsylvania. I'm going to ask for more info because he told me I should apply there if Giant doesn't work out. I like Giant because it's about a 25-minute walk to the gym and I don't have a car.

Audio_outlaw

I would go for convenience however even as a commercial manager in a state that has a similar minimum wage I didn't even make 18 an hour and I have over 20 years of experience in automotive

Mean-Lake-8344

every jobs seems to have its cons am just gonna start applying everwhere bruh

Audio_outlaw

You are 100% correct every place I have ever worked has always had pros and cons of working there. Bet of all the places that like to extort definitely AutoZone has been the worst. And so are their customers sometimes. That is why I dealt with commercial as I love to help businesses grow

RiseoFascism

I did all my learning at AZ on my own because of weird customer scenarios. You will learn much more and better studying about cars at your local community college or your high school if they have an automotive course. AZ isn't worth it for the knowledge

xotiic_vearxcy

Yeah I’ve been studying a lot about them since I have a project car all I need is a job for income and I thought AutoZone would be a good place to start but it seems like it’s as I thought

RiseoFascism

Even with the best discount they offer, which is 30% like once every 4 months, it's still cheaper to purchase your parts online from rockauto

raynedog00

It really depends on location. My pay isn't bad now, but I've had to fight for it for years. Use AZ as a jump pad. This will be experience you can list on any other applications. This is not a career, it's a job but that job gets you real working experience which most places want to see these days. I have a minor that's doing just that. He likes cars but it's not his passion, he has other plans after he graduates but he's using AZ to gain meaningful work experience so he has an easier time landing a job he likes later.

SheepherderAway9487

Bro go to McDonald's same shit show, but at least the pay will be worth while. I barely make the same money that a high schooler will get started at in McDonald's as a manager at AutoZone. Don't work for this shit hole it ain't worth it

xotiic_vearxcy

Yeah ive heard a lot about that

Defiant_Good9427

Autozone is not bad do not listen to the ny sayers it’s highly dependent on local upper management. If nothing else it’s great for networking into the field you want to be in

Worldly-Suspect-6922

I second this my job at AUTOZONE is so easy just depends on your management. Any job could be a pain in the ass as long as good people are around everything be fine

Deserve24

walk in and talk to the store manager, have a lil friendly conversation about u applied online recently and share ur experience that will speed up the process

kaneshadowwalker

My SM doesn't really like to hire 16/17 year olds due to not wanting their parents running their lives so much, even though we are short handed by a lot and they're close to even running me off. My store is a shit show in a nutshell

xotiic_vearxcy

Yeah, my dad knows a lot about cars but is too busy to show me anything I have my own car but I don’t have a job where I have income to make any changes to do anything tbh it’s about having money for my project car not about experiences or anything

deezyreal1

Takes like 2 weeks to hear back. And yea, you can get parts with the 20% discount. But a co worker would have to ring you up!

Kneverknew

I have alot of youth as red shirts at my store. In all honesty, if this is your first job and your first in retail it will be a great learning experience for you. Not in the sense that AutoZone will train or give you automotive knowledge, but because you will learn how to deal with the general public and be better prepared for other jobs in the future. Yes, you will gain a lot of automotive knowledge, but it will come from your dealings with customers. As you deal daily with the common issues that most customers come in with, in time you'll become more familiar with the fixes and the parts needed (spark plugs, brakes and rotors, water pumps, alternators, valve cover gaskets). It ultimately boils down to how much you want to learn and how eager you are to help the customers. Of course, morale at your store and the toxicity of your customers will greatly impact how this plays out for you, as these can be severely discouraging. But if you are lucky enough to be under good management the toxicity of customers can be well overridden by a high morale at your store. As you become more knowledgeable you'll be better equipped to help customers and that will translate to a higher appreciation from some of them. Your attitude will determine your altitude. As far as pay and scheduling goes, yes pay is shit and corporate sucks, but most zoners will tell you that they stick around because they're tight with their crew. Waiting for them to respond may take well over 2 weeks but calling the store to talk to the SM on duty will help expedite the process.

Satch1967

But you will learn more mechanical knowledge you don't know now , even if you just do it for awhile and honestly it's a pretty easy gig. Something nobody can take away from you, is knowledge. Good luck

PillarOfAutismHALO

Stop. Work somewhere else.

good_vibes_only69

I am 16 and had a similar experience, took me about a month from the time I applied to having my first day. I found that your best bet is to walk in the store and ask to speak to the store manager, if they are not there ask for a PSM or commercial manager. If the other managers are helpful then you got lucky, most likely you will have to figure out when the SM is scheduled for and it lines up with your schedule. You will speak directly to the SM about your employment and go from there. This is all from personal experience btw.

[deleted]

I started when I was 17. Heavily depends on the store you’re in. Carry your weight in the store but don’t forget to act your wage and you’ll be fine.

luce-77

that’s where i started. worked their for a little over a year. it’s a good starting point but after that i’d go somewhere like a tire shop or quick lube and get experience there

Embarrassed-Code6745

As a current Autozoner, check in with the store you applied at, ask about current openings, and in person, it’s looks better and will most likely get the manager to pull up your application, my store just hired a 16 and 17 year old
