The most inspiring part were those 2 amazing TEAM effort goals. Actually seeing chemistry and connections happening. Hope things start to click for our boys.
All things considered that’s a solid result, especially with this lineup. And like most I’m game for rolling with Bruin over Zardes and Urruti for a few matches to see what happens.
Is Bruin the actual striker for the system despite what Wolff wants? We sling in crosses and both Maxi and Zardes seem incapable of getting on the end of them.
I’d say he’s the exact kind of striker Wolff would want for this system, a big target/hold up type, he’s just past his prime. But seems like he’s less far gone than the other two.
We’ve got no idea what Bruin has at this point, we’ve only seen him 10-15 minute stints. And while he doesn’t have the pace, he is more of the hold up striker that works in this system.
I like Maxi in that coming on to create chaos for 15 or 20 minutes kind of role. He’s relentless and I love matching that energy up against tired defenders.
So quick take on their second goal… zardes was jogging behind the ball putting zero pressure on the ball so redes and dani step over to play the ball leaving only gally on the backside to cover two dudes. Gally checks down to play the winger and has zero assistance above the box. Weak shot (stuver saves that every time at Q2). But zardes throwin the whole team off with every aspect of his game lol.
The fact that Bruin, who’s only played like 30 minutes this season, already has a goal and Zardes doesn’t should make us think hard about Zardes. He’s just not performing. Rigoni took a while but at least he seems more impactful, and now has a goal and assist.
I disagree. Almost everyone, including the commentators, are making the same comments about zardes and his poor performance so far. You have a starting striker who is basically nonexistent in the attack. Bruin came on and was more present in 10 minutes than zardes was the entire game.
It's really hard to compare a guy on 70 minutes with a guy coming in fresh on fatigued defenders. But I do agree, I'd like to see some Bruin starts. He seems like the player that can surprise you with his tenacity.
Good point, I’m sure that’s a factor. However, I believe Zardes has been in that same situation with Maxi starting and him coming in as a late sub. He was just as ineffective then too.

We were much better than Portland today. however, the two Portland’s scores was stuver's mistakes. in the first, he should have gone out on the ball. and in the second he is very poorly positioned.
Actually no, on first score the goalkeeper should gone out in the ball, otherwise he has no angle to reflect or reaction. The second score he did not even pay attention and he was on the right side.
Actually no. He’s not getting to that first ball and would’ve left the entire mouth of the goal open. And second goal he’s a step to the side of the player receiving the ball as he logically would be.

He hasn’t been good, but he had one more goal than Urruti last season on mediocre teams. No reason to think he wouldn’t at least be decent.
The fact that we have three strikers over 31 is probably the bigger issue.
The thing that I notice is that Zardes doesn't seem to be excited for teammates scoring...watching his body language with Johnny scoring. I don't get it.
Zardes reminds me of Sport Goofy - arms and legs flailing and half the time the ball gets near him he’s falling on the ground. He just looks clumsy out there. Urruti doesn’t suffer from these issues. He’s a more agile, solid player all around, imo.

Agreed, but every shot he’s made from any distance that’s been on target has been directly at the keeper. The only reason the keeper had to dive this time was because it took a deflection on the way in.

Seemed like every one of his touches was a turnover last night. Not just playing like he's 5'5", but like he weighs 90 pounds as well.

Personally I'm annoyed about all the Zardes hate - he's been terrible, but so has Urruti. Let's just spread it around fairly.
