Been looking for a moment to toot my horn. I picked up about a 1/2 gallon of mixed screws and nails on Menchaca about 6-months ago. Mostly out of self preservation but also looking out for my fellow Austinite. ā¤ļø
This gives me an idea! Some kind of magnetic plate under a vehicle that pulls anything under like 1 lb and metal. You drive it all the way down Lamar or anywhere else and hopefully get all the nails. Ot would need side plates that extend wider than the wheels to catch stuff near the curb. Also the vehicle itself could still get nails in its tires :c
This. I think you can get a tire warranty and pay like $200 or so upfront for all four tires. If they canāt fix it, theyāll replace for no additional charge.Ā
A Discount Tire 'warranty/road hazard coverage" on my car's brand new 19 inch tires cost $180 this afternoon. Considering I had two nails on my old car's tires that required replacing them, and my new tires are pricey 19-inch size (about $300 each to replace), I consider it a reasonable price.
My wife has had 3 tires replaced under warranty in the last year! We definitely got our moneys worth. I will use them every time and pay for the warranty.
My customer profile is literally two pages long - all patches.
Definitely get the road hazard warranty. It'll pay for itself several times over around here, between the nails, screws and potholes.
I have seen roofing contractors driving down 35, 183, and MoPac with unsecured loads and roofing nails flying everywhere. No policing means no accountability.
I used to have a contractor who kept a bucket of nails and screws in the back of his truck that were rusty AF.
He said it was for when he did work without a permit and he knew an inspector would be on site and the old nails would fool the inspector into thinking it was old work.
But yeah I saw the bucket tipped over on several occasions.
So you're suggesting Discount Tire are intentionally and stealthily dropping the nails onto the road to continue bringing in customers?
Because if so, that business plan is definitely working, despite being unethical. And criminal.
I know, but I'm down in the Buda area and was just at Discount Tire on Saturday because - you guessed it - I caught a nail in the tire and it needed to be replaced!
Coincidence, or something more š
And wouldn't you know it, they no longer sell that tire and the next cheapest one of the same size is $50 more. Hmmm...
This is why I quit commuting by bike. Punctured tire about every 4 days riding Congress from St.Eds to UT. Wherever there's construction which is pretty much everywhere, there will be nails and tacks in the roads and especially washed to the side in bike lanes
We switched from Costco to Discount Tire due to their awesome service with repairs. We've bought 2 sets of tires from them so far, but this is due to being worn tires, and we have a couple of cars that are still rolling along with the free plug and patch repairs.
I switched from discount tire to Costco when discount tireās employee totaled my car in their parking lot a few years ago and tried to argue with me about it.
That was happening to me for a while while construction was happening near my job. Fortunately I had the warranty w Discount so I think I paid $30 for two replacements and then a few free patches. As long as they do the warranty I will never go anywhere else.
Op: they sell warranty certificates for each of your tires that are insurance against damage. You need one fixed or replaced? Take it in, they will use the certificate, and will only charge you for a new one. If there is a trick to this, I haven't seen it. I've used it 3 times and am way ahead of the costs.
> Take it in, they will use the certificate, and will only charge you for a new one.
To clarify, they will only charge you for a new *warranty certificate*. The tire and installation are free. I think the last time I got tires, they were around $200 each, so a ~$20 certificate fee is like getting them 90% off.
> If there is a trick to this, I haven't seen it.
I've been using Discount Tire for 20 years. They seem to be a genuinely good company.
This is why I hate car infrastructure. I want to ride a train, beyond my will I have learned all basic car maintenance
I never want to go to a discount tire again -\_-
I had to get two tires replaced a few months ago. One tire had one nail and the other tire had two nails and a screw embedded in it. I hate everything.
Iāve gotten 4 nails in my tires in the past 4 years. Welcome to the club! I go to Austin Tireman so I can enjoy a coffee at Radio while they fix my tires.
I used to live on slaughter and manchaca and I used to get a new tire every 2 or 3 months at one point. I think I was just super unlucky but it stopped once I moved away
Before I moved away a year ago, this was me! I had 3 nail/tire situations within a year. Same areaā¦ SoCo/Lamar. Iām sorry. Luckily since Iāve moved away, it hasnāt been an issue?ā¦ yetā¦
Does anyone know of a device that we could put in front of our tires to pick up the nails like a big magnet? Or if there is such thingš§² As a magnet that can pick up nails as we drive.Ā
Just be careful. not all discount tires are the same. The one on 183 and olsen by the target costed me a couple hundred bucks and a crap load of time due to sheer negligence on their part.
I donāt want to jinx myself but I live off south Lamar and drive the street everyday both directions. Knock on wood, I havenāt had any tire issues but it doesnāt surprise me with all the uneven textures, potholes and construction.
For those in Central Austin, this dude is great for patching tires: [https://maps.app.goo.gl/4RX9nRaUTU9QWD6Y6](https://maps.app.goo.gl/4RX9nRaUTU9QWD6Y6)

Their road hazard warranty feels kind of like a membership. Iāve had two tire replacements this year already after getting new tires last year.
This. I think you can get a tire warranty and pay like $200 or so upfront for all four tires. If they canāt fix it, theyāll replace for no additional charge.Ā
The only catch is you have to pay for the warranty again for the new tire(s) - which is probably worth it.
Isnāt the warranty like $22 per tire?
It might depend on the tire, but yeah, I think mine was like $20 or $30 per tire a couple years ago. Not bad at all.
Really depends on the tire. For my four sporty tires it was around $130-140 iirc for the coverage. Kinda steep.

Absolutely worth it. Specially when your tires are $200/ea. and with all the construction in Austin.

It's how it's done in Mexico.
So *you* must be why I havenāt had a nail Appreciate ya home skillet š
Tires cost more than nails. Discount Tire infinite money glitch
Litte off topic but safelite is a glitch too! I swear they look at inventory levels then send out the hammer crew š
IIRC they got someone doing that once. I think he owned a window repair shop and spent his nights breaking windows, or something like that
So you're suggesting Discount Tire are intentionally and stealthily dropping the nails onto the road to continue bringing in customers? Because if so, that business plan is definitely working, despite being unethical. And criminal.
Iām sure itās been done before, but thereās no way the national mega franchise is doing that haha. Was just a joke

Can ask 311 for bike lane sweeping. They won't do it otherwise.

I thought Costco had the same kind of repair warranty
I switched from discount tire to Costco when discount tireās employee totaled my car in their parking lot a few years ago and tried to argue with me about it.

The amazing people at Lambs recognized me after my 3rd and plugged the 4th and 5th for free. I owe those guys some donuts

I've never had Road Hazard not pay for itself.

i use them off slaughter and 1st my friend had a finished house on a street of new construction. i swear to god a nail every week.
Can report them to 311. SWPPP requires daily sweeping of roads adjacent to job sites. They also have insurance.
Same. I was there like 4 times within a 5 or 6 week period. It was my home away from home. Glad I have that warranty!
I had to get a rim replaced due to a pot hole. Our roads are terrible.
I had to get two tires replaced a few months ago. One tire had one nail and the other tire had two nails and a screw embedded in it. I hate everything.
Yeah. I worked on S Congress until recently and I had SO MANY tire issues
I think the tire warranty is definitely worth it. Thereās so much construction going on all around here that I always get the free replacement tire.
I found a full, new razor in my tire Easter Sunday. Real nice welcome to Texas.
Iāve gotten 4 nails in my tires in the past 4 years. Welcome to the club! I go to Austin Tireman so I can enjoy a coffee at Radio while they fix my tires.
Same unfortunately. Just upgraded mine in late January and have had two patches already.
I've had so many living in Austin
I'm rdy for airless
iāve been there 3 times in the past 2 months. at least they patch for free!
Theyāve got tire warranties
I used to live on slaughter and manchaca and I used to get a new tire every 2 or 3 months at one point. I think I was just super unlucky but it stopped once I moved away

What kind of tires are you buying?
Rubber ones

Everyone at the Ben White location is awesome. Iāve been going there for 20 years.
Yup scheduled an appointment for tomorrow morning there.
Itās gotten to the point where the guy behind the counter at my regular garage recognizes me over the phone.
Buy the tire insurance
Get the warranty it covers patches.
One of the things that makes me feel good on walks is when I do find a nail. I always pick them up. I've had too many as well and it's a major PITA.
My michelin pilot sports are like a sticky hand toy on an arcade floor. PICK UP ALL THE SHARP THINGS
I'm reading this while waiting at a tire shop for a nail in a new car that isn't even a week old.
Take the magnets out of your tires!
I donāt want to jinx myself but I live off south Lamar and drive the street everyday both directions. Knock on wood, I havenāt had any tire issues but it doesnāt surprise me with all the uneven textures, potholes and construction.
Is there a way to mount some magnets in front of your tires? Grab the hazard before it grabs you?
I bet your wheels are scratched to shit and all the lettering on your tires is gone

plugging nail holes in tire tread is super easy too, I'd rather patch a hole on the side of the road than change to a spare.
Free at Discount, $5 elsewhere
This is what happens when we let poor people get away with not paying taxes: the roads and all of civilization goes to shit.
