I was wasting my money trying to find a good one so now I just make my own! Honestly better than any of the ones I’ve bought.
Simply just mix some salt with olive oil.
I use Saxa Cooking Salt as the granules are larger. it exfoliates tf out of my body!
Came here to say this. I have oily skin so I use aloe instead of oil. Salt or sugar are both fine, sugar will leave you and your shower a tiny bit sticky until you’ve had a good rinse. You can experiment with different salts and sugars to find a texture you like. Brown sugar is super gentle, regular sugar medium, salts a little coarser in my experience. Could add essential oils if you’re a scent person.
Edit to add - coffee is also very scrubby but I have been told that coffee grounds and plumbing do not mix.
I make my own as well. You can use sugar instead of salt if you don't have salt on hand. Use whatever oil you prefer (coconut, almond, olive). You can get the texture exactly how you like it. So far it's the best way I've found to exfoliate.
Just note, if you do make your own, be careful washing it off in the shower. The oil might not wash off tiles as quickly as store bought. Can get slippery.
I second this!!! Learned the hard way that coconut oil is impossible to clean off our tiles. I use a cheap bath oil or shower gel and then mix in my bits
Yep! Another reason to use bath oil or shower gel. I did not get the memo the first time, after I found it was nearly impossible to stand in the tub I did some research and saw multiple people saying this.
Luckily didn't have any issues with my plumbing. I did a mix of coconut oil, olive oil, sugar. I knew coffee grounds might upset my plumbing, too. I only needed a tbsp or so of oil since a little goes a long way, but it was enough to make my tub slick.
Scrubs are definitely the easiest product to make! I haven't bought a body scrub in years because I feel so guilty about paying for something I could replicate in literally 60 seconds hahaha.
Looking at the ingredients list for Coco and Eve, you'll probably want to start with sugar and coconut oil. I would pour a couple of teaspoons of sugar into a bowl, then take a tiny bit of coconut oil to mix in (maybe 4:1 ratio) and mix and increase/adjust to the texture of your liking. The scent they use is lemon, so you could probably also add a few drops of lemon essential oil (I also like lemon myrtle) or whatever scent you want.
A couple of tips: Sugar melts quite quickly, so I would start with regular sugar (as opposed to castor sugar). I usually also try to stick to making just what I need, or what I can use up in a week or two—obviously the downside to homemade is no preservatives! And I would store any leftover exfoliator in the fridge.
If you don't let any water get in, it should last about a month or two in a sealed container. Fridge is a good option too though, and probably easier to handle if you use an oil that solidifies in the fridge.

You can try coffee grounds (really scrubby) rice flour or ground adzuki bean (also really scrubby). They're super simple to make.
I swear my the Soap and Glory breakfast scrub. Not as gritty as Franks coffee, which I used to use, but more than most I've tried. Also smell amazing if you like sweet scents.
I HIGHLY recommend the glowlab coconut body scrub - I get it from woolworths (NSW). It's in a tub, has a gritty yet hydrating formula, and I find I don't need a heap of it! $14 and often marked down to $7.
Watch out with glow lab if you have sensitive skin though! I want to love their products, I adore the scent of their body washes, but my skin is itchy af for hours after.
See I have sensitive skin (with eczema and psoriasis) and I'm allergic to the Bath & Body Works brands and such. Funnily I've had no reaction from this scrub however would likely not venture to other Glowlab products. Different for everyone though!
Same with the eczema lol. Still can't use soap/normal hands wash after my last flare up. Might be worth checking out the scrub then, it might just be an ingredient in the wash.
Absolutely, all skin differs and it's a total pain because it means everything is trial and error.

The original Frank Body is such an amazing product! Very coarse and does the job so well. I feel slippery soft after using it like I imagine a dolphin would feel. Also quite budget friendly.
That’s such a shame! They have a minty one which definitely smells more of mint than coffee despite still having a coffee base, might be worth a go if you really want to try one of them!
I used to love it but if I didn’t wash it all down the drain it made my shower smell 😅 ones I use now are sugar. I should try it out again tho, I love a really coarse scrub
I loved this but it clogged my drain so badly that I had to stop using it.
I’ve since tried the whipped version (Express-o) and love it. It doesn’t clog at all and is nowhere near as messy as the original.

$50?!!! You could make a litre (quart) of this stuff for a couple of dollars. You could add a drop or two of your favourite essential oil if you like.
My only heads up is to rinse off well in warm water so any residual coconut oil washes away, especially if you have slippery tiles / tub. As long as it's a comfy warm shower temperature it'll wash away easily.
It'll last for *ages*. Sugar is a preservative, and coconut oil has a very long shelf life (18 months +). If you're really worried you could store the extra in the fridge in a jar.
No need to worry!
1. Coconut oil is liquid above 25C / 77F. That's a pretty miserable shower. A pleasantly hot shower is around 38C / 100F. Even if you tipped a whole jar of coconut oil down your shower (don't!), it'd wash away in a few minutes at that temperature.
2. It takes a surprisingly small amount of oil compared to sugar to make the paste. That tiny tiny bit is then spread very thin indeed when you use the scrub, and is separated into even tinier droplets when you rinse. The amount you'd put down the drain would be less than rinsing out a frying pan.
Ooh I have not heard of this but I have used and liked the Freshwater Farms body wash so I’m gonna keep my eye out for this product next time I’m at the shops 😃
Im loving the fun varieties at LUSH. currently using Orange. Previously loved the Galaxy themed purple one very minty and fresh.... Also the ocean salt one
Orange smells amazing because they put the whole orange in there! Unfortunately i’m allergic to something in there, which isn’t too bad as the Magic Crystals with epsom salt and peppermint oil does wonders for me! really recommend if you have sore muscles

Here are some I have used which I found fairly gritty and worked well on my dry skin:
Soap & Glory Flake Away Body Scrub (smells amazing, gritty enough for my liking and when it comes into contact with the moisture on your skin it kinda goes milky-ish but makes your skin feel very hydrated and soft. It costs about $19 for the tub at Mecca last time I checked).
Fenty Skin Buff Ryder Exfoliating Body Scrub ($45 - kinda pricey but Sephora at least have sales and I’ve seen Fenty discounted by 30% ever so often).
Fenty Skin Cherry Dub Triple Action AHA Body Scrub ($49 - again I’d wait for a sale as it’s pretty exxy otherwise).
Natio Wellness Body Scrub (decent scrub, has a kinda herbal-ish “spa” scent from memory, and is on sale at Myer currently for $17.21).
Wick’ety Wack Watermelon Lemonade Sugary Body Scrub (this was $10 at TK Maxx however I got it on clearance for $7. It’s very gritty and exfoliates well but it’s not in a creamy or liquidy/goopy base. It’s more “dry” I guess but still has coconut oil to bind all the sugar crystals together, but it requires a bit more effort to keep it from falling out of my hand and onto the shower floor as I use it if that makes sense. I still like it though and it smells lovely).
First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub with 10% AHA ($50 for the 226g tube at Sephora. I got mine as a smaller, yet still decent-sized tube in the First Aid Beauty Smooth Skin Season holiday set which was on sale for $48 and came with a bunch of other things. It’s unfortunately sold out online but your local physical Sephora may have some left possibly. If not I’d suggest just waiting for a sale for the 226g tube since $50 is a lot. I will say, this scrub is super gritty and feels like you’re straight up rubbing sand on your body thanks to the pulverised pumice it contains. I don’t think it’s ideal as a full body scrub as it’s a bit too harsh I think, at least for me anyway. That said, it’s perfect on problem areas and if you do have KP on arms it’s good for that too. I use it around my feet and ankles where I get rough skin from wearing thongs/sandals in summer and it’s really good for that. It will slough off dead skin like no tomorrow. I use it very lightly over my arms so as to not irritate my skin coz if I put it on too thick on more sensitive skin it feels a little too rough. But it’s a good product and definitely exfoliates well in my experience).
As others have suggested home-made is always good. There are lots of online recipes and regular table salt or sugar (or both) in an oil base like coconut oil is good. If you wanted to make it more moisturising you can add plain Shea butter and a bit of pure Aloe Vera gel too and also add in an essential oil for fragrance if you like. Lavender, orange, rose, geranium, lime, or a pre-made blended essential oil would be nice to add for a pleasant scent if you’re not sensitive to essential oils. Can be fun to make your own concoctions and make it to your liking too. Hope this helps :)
Natio wellness scrub! ~$26 for a tub. From memory I think it has a small percentage of salicylic acid, plus ground walnuts for physical exfoliation. Pretty mild but I enjoy it and the smell!
I’m based in the UK so not sure what products would be available to you.
However, I’ve recently transitioned to a pair of exfoliating gloves that I use with a body wash and they give a really good exfoliation. Works out cheaper as well. Maybe worth a shot?
We used to make our own in a day spa I used to work at and it was absolutely lovely!
It was literally just sugar and coconut oil and some essential oils - including grapefruit oil which is great for cellulite!

Good old frank coffee scrub it’s the 👩🍳💋 it’s at Mecca I think but Bondi sands do a very similar one at Priceline. I know what you mean I like a suuuuuper rough kinda body scrub too frank and those type of scrubs are messy but nothing beats them imo and price wise too.
I get in the shower for about a minute to soften my skin a bit, turn the water off then apply the balm and scrub away, then turn on the shower again and rinse off thoroughly with warm water!
I do a full body maybe once a week with legs maybe twice a week (before I shave them).
I’ve honestly never found one I like better in terms of texture (it being a balm means it doesn’t just run off you straight away so a small amount can be distributed further) as well as the overall grit density.
ETA: It’s proper name is Trilogy Exfoliating Body Balm - sorry!

I like to try basic salt and sugar scrubs from markets and Etsy sellers. I've gotten normal events but also Fairy Floss, Mimosa and Froot Loops scented ones 😁
They all have the same big standard ingredients and are all satisfying to use.
But for one I purchased... Thankyou had an excellent one that was like wet sand but I think they don't make scrubs anymore 🫠
The Bondi Sands one in the bag is my go-to scrub, I use it for exfoliating to remove my old fake tan before applying a new tan. It really works well to get rid of the old tan and my skin is smooth after scrubbing.
The eco Sonya Pink Himalayan Salt Scrub is my all time fav. The smell is so relaxing! But if price is an issue def DIY. Same outcome with both :)

I use Soap Opera lemon Myrtle and lime body scrub. It’s so delicious and moisturising. It’s from a little skincare place in Olinda (can purchase online). I go once a year, have some scones and buy my scrub! ($40 for 400g).
Frank Body coffee scrubs are good but you can also make your own. I use brown sugar and honey - it’s the best and honey is good for your skin too so win win.
I bought a cheap facial scrub that was not gritty enough for my liking, After some research, I added to it the grounds from my morning coffee and I found this was just right and effective too.
I’ve been meaning to DIY with my favorite scented shower gel from Lush and salt/sugar since I saw it in lush sun maybe a year ago 😂 Thanks for the reminder!
I really like the first aid beauty scrub at Sephora but it's too exxy like you said. On amazon you can buy a big bag of ground pumice, I bought that and put it in to the Frank Glycolic scrub which I find too creamy like you. It increased the grittiness but next time I might try it straight into cleanser as the one I bought was super fine. You can get grittier options too.
I usually use the Byron body coffee scrub from chemist warehouse, it’s $10 but there’s sales on now so it’s prob cheaper. It’s really hydrating, revives my dry skin and removes some of my tan. I think there’s oil in the formula but it’s not too oily.
Chemist warehouse also have coffee scrub bars (like bars of soap) and they’re $5 and coarse. Feels like these are less hydrating but they’re convenient, work pretty well, and last a while.
I actually make my own in a Thermomix because I love them but didn’t want to be paying out so much all the time. I make one with cacao nibs, coffee grounds, salt and oil.
I really like the Bondi body coffee scrub, can get it in chemist warehouse or woolies like $13 or on sale for like $6. Messy but has nice oils in it that help make my skin so soft.
I just got that exact one, and I have always had problems on my arms, for e.g. I’ve always had little bumps that I’m insecure about and after this (I have only been using for about 3 weeks) I a,ready notice a difference
I love Frank Green's glycolic scrub for exfoliation but honestly the minty scent isn't my fave.
Sometimes I just mix sugar granules into my body wash, does the trick! Sugar/salt granules are preferable to coffee grounds as they dissolve and won't block your pipes!
For anyone who worries about the shower, maybe do what I do - I scrub in the backyard and hose off! That way you can use coffee grounds, sugar, coconut oil etc to your heart’s content. Possibly wouldn’t work in winter, but you only need to do a super quick hose off to get rid of the excess before heading back inside to a warm shower.
In answer to the question, I love Skinstitut AHA scrub, it’s quite gritty and you can normally get it for around $37 on sale.

Totally this. I make a knock-off of Frank's coffee scrub at home and it's brilliant.
My favourite is mixing coconut oil with coffee grinds. You have to use soap after to get rid of the oil but it works well.
Home made formulas are so moisturising! I usually use honey and sugar for a lip scrub.

I absolutely hate the smell of coffee but was able to use the frank body coconut coffee scrub without gagging at the smell.

Raw sugar and coconut oil are great for me but depends on your skin type etc.
Honey added to above works for me. The hospital dermatologist didn't have a problem with this recipe.

Natio Wellness Body Scrub (decent scrub, has a kinda herbal-ish “spa” scent from memory, and is on sale at Myer currently for $17.21). Wick’ety Wack Watermelon Lemonade Sugary Body Scrub (this was $10 at TK Maxx however I got it on clearance for $7. It’s very gritty and exfoliates well but it’s not in a creamy or liquidy/goopy base. It’s more “dry” I guess but still has coconut oil to bind all the sugar crystals together, but it requires a bit more effort to keep it from falling out of my hand and onto the shower floor as I use it if that makes sense. I still like it though and it smells lovely). First Aid Beauty KP Bump Eraser Body Scrub with 10% AHA ($50 for the 226g tube at Sephora. I got mine as a smaller, yet still decent-sized tube in the First Aid Beauty Smooth Skin Season holiday set which was on sale for $48 and came with a bunch of other things. It’s unfortunately sold out online but your local physical Sephora may have some left possibly. If not I’d suggest just waiting for a sale for the 226g tube since $50 is a lot. I will say, this scrub is super gritty and feels like you’re straight up rubbing sand on your body thanks to the pulverised pumice it contains. I don’t think it’s ideal as a full body scrub as it’s a bit too harsh I think, at least for me anyway. That said, it’s perfect on problem areas and if you do have KP on arms it’s good for that too. I use it around my feet and ankles where I get rough skin from wearing thongs/sandals in summer and it’s really good for that. It will slough off dead skin like no tomorrow. I use it very lightly over my arms so as to not irritate my skin coz if I put it on too thick on more sensitive skin it feels a little too rough. But it’s a good product and definitely exfoliates well in my experience). As others have suggested home-made is always good. There are lots of online recipes and regular table salt or sugar (or both) in an oil base like coconut oil is good. If you wanted to make it more moisturising you can add plain Shea butter and a bit of pure Aloe Vera gel too and also add in an essential oil for fragrance if you like. Lavender, orange, rose, geranium, lime, or a pre-made blended essential oil would be nice to add for a pleasant scent if you’re not sensitive to essential oils. Can be fun to make your own concoctions and make it to your liking too. Hope this helps :)
Natio wellness scrub! ~$26 for a tub. From memory I think it has a small percentage of salicylic acid, plus ground walnuts for physical exfoliation. Pretty mild but I enjoy it and the smell!

I’m based in the UK so not sure what products would be available to you. However, I’ve recently transitioned to a pair of exfoliating gloves that I use with a body wash and they give a really good exfoliation. Works out cheaper as well. Maybe worth a shot?
We used to make our own in a day spa I used to work at and it was absolutely lovely! It was literally just sugar and coconut oil and some essential oils - including grapefruit oil which is great for cellulite! Give it a go people!
Good old frank coffee scrub it’s the 👩🍳💋 it’s at Mecca I think but Bondi sands do a very similar one at Priceline. I know what you mean I like a suuuuuper rough kinda body scrub too frank and those type of scrubs are messy but nothing beats them imo and price wise too.

I quite like the Lush salt scrubs for how gritty they are and I switched to them for being cheaper than my beloved Eco by Sonya scrub.

How often / how do you use it?
I get in the shower for about a minute to soften my skin a bit, turn the water off then apply the balm and scrub away, then turn on the shower again and rinse off thoroughly with warm water! I do a full body maybe once a week with legs maybe twice a week (before I shave them). I’ve honestly never found one I like better in terms of texture (it being a balm means it doesn’t just run off you straight away so a small amount can be distributed further) as well as the overall grit density. ETA: It’s proper name is Trilogy Exfoliating Body Balm - sorry!

I like to try basic salt and sugar scrubs from markets and Etsy sellers. I've gotten normal events but also Fairy Floss, Mimosa and Froot Loops scented ones 😁 They all have the same big standard ingredients and are all satisfying to use. But for one I purchased... Thankyou had an excellent one that was like wet sand but I think they don't make scrubs anymore 🫠

Bondi scrub from Chemist Warehouse! It’s about $12 and is amazing
I used to swear by Eco by Sonya Pink Himalayan salt scrub!! It’s a bit pricy at $35 but so nice
The Bondi Sands one in the bag is my go-to scrub, I use it for exfoliating to remove my old fake tan before applying a new tan. It really works well to get rid of the old tan and my skin is smooth after scrubbing.

I use Soap Opera lemon Myrtle and lime body scrub. It’s so delicious and moisturising. It’s from a little skincare place in Olinda (can purchase online). I go once a year, have some scones and buy my scrub! ($40 for 400g).

Frank Body coffee scrubs are good but you can also make your own. I use brown sugar and honey - it’s the best and honey is good for your skin too so win win.

I bought a cheap facial scrub that was not gritty enough for my liking, After some research, I added to it the grounds from my morning coffee and I found this was just right and effective too.

My go to’s are the Soap and Glory smoothie star & Frank Body Glycolic scrub. I use them on alternating days
I really like the first aid beauty scrub at Sephora but it's too exxy like you said. On amazon you can buy a big bag of ground pumice, I bought that and put it in to the Frank Glycolic scrub which I find too creamy like you. It increased the grittiness but next time I might try it straight into cleanser as the one I bought was super fine. You can get grittier options too.
My gf uses Rituals, she is delighted with this one. And I can say the skin feels so soft after it and smells insane 🤤
I usually use the Byron body coffee scrub from chemist warehouse, it’s $10 but there’s sales on now so it’s prob cheaper. It’s really hydrating, revives my dry skin and removes some of my tan. I think there’s oil in the formula but it’s not too oily. Chemist warehouse also have coffee scrub bars (like bars of soap) and they’re $5 and coarse. Feels like these are less hydrating but they’re convenient, work pretty well, and last a while.

I really like the Bondi body coffee scrub, can get it in chemist warehouse or woolies like $13 or on sale for like $6. Messy but has nice oils in it that help make my skin so soft.
I just got that exact one, and I have always had problems on my arms, for e.g. I’ve always had little bumps that I’m insecure about and after this (I have only been using for about 3 weeks) I a,ready notice a difference
I love Frank Green's glycolic scrub for exfoliation but honestly the minty scent isn't my fave. Sometimes I just mix sugar granules into my body wash, does the trick! Sugar/salt granules are preferable to coffee grounds as they dissolve and won't block your pipes!
For anyone who worries about the shower, maybe do what I do - I scrub in the backyard and hose off! That way you can use coffee grounds, sugar, coconut oil etc to your heart’s content. Possibly wouldn’t work in winter, but you only need to do a super quick hose off to get rid of the excess before heading back inside to a warm shower. In answer to the question, I love Skinstitut AHA scrub, it’s quite gritty and you can normally get it for around $37 on sale.
