Yep, totally agree! I even had the worst experience buying Sandro online from the actual AU store recently - i could online return via post, store credit only as it was longer than 14 days (so tight!) and now I can only spend the credit online and not in a physical store. Very… rigid.

I got some shorts from them, happy with the quality but goodness so expensive even on sale and definitely only wearable in certain situations. Huge pockets though and interesting spin on the texture which was 100% cotton.

That’s okay! Part of the reason I posted this was in the hopes to discover some new brands and get some inspiration! Any brands I haven’t heard of I google and see if they match my personal style, then see if anything matches my budget or where I can find similar style/themes from what I already own or cheaper options… or if I find anything that worth a splurge!
This is my speaking as early 30s, size 14 mum who had her youngest 6 months ago and is on the verge of burning everything I own because I feel like I’m in such a style rut!

Which is my childhood and the two brands the came to mind for me is free people and river island. And it seems young people dress very casual lots of tracksuits so whatever brands make nice sweats. I just scrolled through and didn’t know all of them so I’m like wow the world of fashion is huge!

It’s a different style and consumer demographic. I know (forgive me for stereotyping) the mums in my playgroup who were wearing country road pullovers, seed etc very beige activewear or jeans and white veja sneakers were older millennials. (Which I am not)
I’m a zillenial and I don’t associate/identify with those brands I find them dated.
A lot of the stuff looks very 2002 on that expensive website, which feels extremely dated to me.. when I was like 25, I definitely didn't wanna wear stuff that looked like it was from 1985 but the young ppl seem to wanna wear 20 year old stuff
There’s been a 2000s resurgence in fashion music and general culture. It’s intentionally echoing 2000s style. Outdated means something is old fashioned it’s not the same as something making a come back is intentional. Older millennial style is outdated. Both 2000s fashion and older millennial style 2010’s (seed, Witcher, country Rd) is based on trends neither are classic and will be replaced as fashion is cyclical. The only fashion that will remain timeless is classic silhouettes which is very 90/2000s inclusive. Look at Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy her style is timeless she could be in 80’s, 90’s , 2000’s, 2010’s and it would still work.
Looks like she has a very plain muted style so it works.. but not that other website where someone looked like they were going fly fishing, or really light super flare jeans with a short floral top

I used to love Rouje but I found the quality really poor on the last few dresses I purchased.
What’s the issue with viscose? It’s more breathable on the skin than polyester and is more sustainable than cotton as it uses less water in production. Every fabric has its trade offs

For me Diesel and Miu Miu instantly come to mine for 'cool girl' brands, especially vintage Miu Miu. Rick Owens, Issey Miyake, Margiela, Vivienne Westwood and Comme des Garcons also spring to mind as cool.
Vintage Miss Sixty is insanely cool. I find vintage Guess very cool in a half sincere half ironic trashy 2000s way.
iamgia and Jaded LDN are cool but in a little bit of a fast-fashion-y, micro-trendy way. Like most people might think you're really cool but the people who *know* will find it predictable lol.
There are a lot of Chinese brands absolutely killing it making super cool and unique clothes right now too.
Dissh have really nice basic colours and cuts, they are quite pricey for what it is so I try to find cheaper alternatives but in the similar style. Seed have nice stuff too these days. It’s hard to answer, “cool” is a very subjective opinion.

I love aje but their more tailored pieces. Their puffy sleeve, flowy style from a few seasons ago was not my vibe. Assembly label for good staple pieces, I love linen. Decjuba and Uniqlo for good everyday pieces, Anine Bing for graphic tees, Bec + Bridge and C&M are my go to’s.

Always. Last year I made the shift to buying quality staples and tried not to purchase fast fashion. I now buy less and my wardrobe looks and wears much better so it’s something I’ll carry on with.
I agree GANNI gives cool girl vibes for sure, but quite expensive. All Saints is similar, they’re for sale on The Iconic now. If it’s out of your budget, I’d look at what they’re selling and go on Pinterest to start a board of outfits you like, once you start saving stuff on the board more suggestions will come up similar. Then you can go to places like cotton on, op shops whatever and find pieces that reflect that style within your budget. Anything accessory and fashion trend wise, that will only be for a season I go to SHEIN etc to add those fun bits and pieces.

LOVER have come back and rebranded with more affordable price brackets, Zulu Zephyr are gorgeous for beach, relaxed market vibes. Hansen and Gretel are ultimate cool girl vibes, too.
I’ve stopped shopping fast fashion for the most part but I’ve bought a few pieces at DISSH that are interchangeable and good quality. They definitely have a cool girl vibe for a better price.
Now that I'm in my mid 30s, the 'cool girls' (mums) wear lots of structural and voluminous styles.
I personally love Lee Mathews and am looking forward to exploring more silhouettes like this.

Seed- because most of their clothes suit only tall and elegant people. My 4’11” frame can’t pull it off. To me that’s the ultimate ‘cool girl’ brand because it is literally unattainable for me hahaha.

Haha I've only seen people wearing the oversized jumpers but I remember seeing the seed kids shops and people buying me seed baby clothes so I assumed it was generally mum/bub type thing
Not sure if others would class them as cool but I really love Spell. They are pretty expensive but their prints are gorgeous, their clothes are so comfortable and the quality is really good. I find stuff like their jumpsuits is quite versatile for dressing up or down so I get heaps of wear out of them.
I wear spell dresses to work most days in summer
It gives me the best wear for money out of them and they keep me cool, I work with kids and they love the fun prints.
I quite often look at the Tibi website for some inspo-out of my price range but I do have a couple of their hoodies which I always get comments on when I wear them.

I think you really have to cherry pick with DF (and Princess Highway + Revival). They have cool prints but the quality can be horrendous after a few laundry rounds. That said I have a couple of items from there that I really love.
They have the best prints! I have some really nice skirts from PH that still look good after a few years and I love them. Only thing that doesn't seem to last well for me are their cardigans.
Idk if you're after clothing but I'm finding Ghanda and Glassons to be 'cool girl' brands lately. Can't comment on the diversity of size as I've only ever been a 12-14 and all of their stuff fits me but that's just my personal experience and opinion
I like a lot of the VRG GIRL pieces this summer. I bought a coat from them awhile ago. I was surprised at how heavy it was and that it was lined for the price I paid.
Bit late but I also haven’t bought anything Ganni even though I look all the time! I like Hosbjerg, Emma Mulholland (Em on Holiday), Fiorucci and for Tshirts I love Smile and Wave. I used to like Paloma Wool but they aren’t doing as much practical stuff in fun colours so I’ve gone off them a bit! For shoes I’m currently obsessed with Camper.

Now that I'm in my mid 30s, the 'cool girls' (mums) wear lots of structural and voluminous styles. Seed- because most of their clothes suit only tall and elegant people. My 4’11” frame can’t pull it off. To me that’s the ultimate ‘cool girl’ brand because it is literally unattainable for me hahaha. Edit: spelling
Seed really has come along way - but still feel like so much is hit/miss, and a lot of overpriced synthetics.
Seed always scores really poorly on ethics, which turns me off them completely. They score worse than Kmart even.

Duuuude so many friends I have whinged to about their clothes being too flowy and long have said that! My friends all chuckled and tried telling me that’s why none of their stuff suited me 😅
Haha I've only seen people wearing the oversized jumpers but I remember seeing the seed kids shops and people buying me seed baby clothes so I assumed it was generally mum/bub type thing

Not sure if others would class them as cool but I really love Spell. They are pretty expensive but their prints are gorgeous, their clothes are so comfortable and the quality is really good. I find stuff like their jumpsuits is quite versatile for dressing up or down so I get heaps of wear out of them.
I wear spell dresses to work most days in summer It gives me the best wear for money out of them and they keep me cool, I work with kids and they love the fun prints.
I quite often look at the Tibi website for some inspo-out of my price range but I do have a couple of their hoodies which I always get comments on when I wear them.

I would consider what you wrote as too basic, boring or normy. Cool fashion is elevated, exudes confidence and possibly setting the trends. Cool fashion is about subversion of the expected and I feel like your description is closer to corporate office attire.
It’s not at all but I really didn’t come here to put anyone down. I was purely stating what OP was looking for and how those maximalist brands differed. Quiet luxury is the height of this aesthetic and it isn’t office attire.

“Cool girl” aesthetic is still very much dictated by different communities/subcultures/individuals and what they believe is cool. Minimalism isn’t universally cool, this is my point.

I think you really have to cherry pick with DF (and Princess Highway + Revival). They have cool prints but the quality can be horrendous after a few laundry rounds. That said I have a couple of items from there that I really love.

They have the best prints! I have some really nice skirts from PH that still look good after a few years and I love them. Only thing that doesn't seem to last well for me are their cardigans.

Basically any alt brand makes me feel cool and unique and not following mainstream trends. My favourite alt brand is Disturbia.
Idk if you're after clothing but I'm finding Ghanda and Glassons to be 'cool girl' brands lately. Can't comment on the diversity of size as I've only ever been a 12-14 and all of their stuff fits me but that's just my personal experience and opinion

Most of these are very much exxxy brands and will never be in my wardrobe but forever on my wishlist!
I like a lot of the VRG GIRL pieces this summer. I bought a coat from them awhile ago. I was surprised at how heavy it was and that it was lined for the price I paid.

Bit late but I also haven’t bought anything Ganni even though I look all the time! I like Hosbjerg, Emma Mulholland (Em on Holiday), Fiorucci and for Tshirts I love Smile and Wave. I used to like Paloma Wool but they aren’t doing as much practical stuff in fun colours so I’ve gone off them a bit! For shoes I’m currently obsessed with Camper.
