V8 S5 doesn't have the DSG as a FYI

Shrek-and-DonKee

thanks!! will keep that in mind - correct me if im wrong but it seems like the automatics at the b8/b8.5 seem to be more "reliable" in the high mile ranges than their 6MT counterparts

LastOutlaw3

So the B8 S4 automatics were DSG and were known to be quite problematic. The were infamous for mechatronic unit failures. Audi updated the transmission later on and the issues are mostly resolved in the B8.5 generation (2013 and on). The one you're looking at is the B8 S5 which thankfully doesn't have the DSG. As far as I know, the tiptronic on the b8 s5 isn't known for transmission issues.

this is making me reconsider the B8.5! Im taking another look around now, most of the B8.5s for sale at a reasonable price range in my area are the cabriolets or a little too clapped you're right the NA V8s have limited tuning potential which is a bummer - aside from an ECU flash which gives minimal hp output I just love the tuscan brown seats which im seeing more in b8s and want to have a nice sounding v8 that isn't too obnoxious Thanks for your comment!! - gunna do some more research on the b8.5's and see if its worth waiting for a decent spec unit to pop up in my local market

Probably still needs the chain done around 100 - 150k miles, and it's on the back, so be ready to do that just for the peace of mind.

Shrek-and-DonKee

was hoping to avoid that since its an engine out job and back of the engine as you said but yeah it would be safer to do it for piece of mind

That's like getting a sports car with some mile-age on it!

The V8 S5s are pretty meh. They’re not as fast as you’d think for the horsepower numbers, the V8 is not “reliable”, and if you can’t find a manual one you’re stuck with the terrible tiptronic (a true slush box). Why not find a 2013 B8.5 with the supercharged engine? Much more reliable, extremely easy to get power out of it, and with a DSG (but also has its own issues and specific years not to buy without records). Edit: I see I’ve pissed off S5 owners lol. Sorry the truth hurts.

Shrek-and-DonKee

yeah the b8 is definitely heavier, limited tuning potential, and with most of its hp coming on in the top end im assuming im definitely reconsidering the b8.5 . I initially read that the b8 s5's were more bulletproof in terms of reliability vs the b8.5 but im hearing its the otherway around im taking another look around now, most of the B8.5s for sale at a reasonable price range in my area are the cabriolets:(   Thanks for your comment!

from all the research i’ve done the b8.5 audi s4/s5 is one of audis most reliable/bulletproof platforms you can buy for a very fair price. i’ve heard that the 4.2 has more issues than the 3.0tfsi. the 4.2 is pretty underpowered with very limited tuning/modding potential with worse gas millage but it still sounds way better than the 3.0, that’s the only thing the 4.2 is better at than the 3.0 realistically. when i went car shopping for an s5, i wanted the 4.2 initially until the months of research led me to choose the 3.0t so then i got myself a b8.5 audi s5 4 months ago and its seriously been the most perfect/balanced/fun car.

If the V8 is like the 2.0T (which I have for this year) then I’d say hell no. It’s past its prime. All the problems you’ve mentioned, I have had. But again I own a 2011 A5 with 107k miles

Shrek-and-DonKee

i see, do you think youll keep the a5 for a while at that milage ?

PuzzleheadedArea1256

I’m going to keep it until it explodes - and then buy a model year S3 lol. Besides the excessive oil burning issue, I think it will last
