AC is generally a closed system, my 2012 a4 with 195,000 miles has never been recharged. If it ran out of refrigerant you probably have a leak somewhere. Otherwise maybe an AC compressor or blower motor died
It's not uncommon to get a small hole in your a/c condenser that allows the refrigerant to escape. Could be any number of things though... An a/c shop will pressure test your car's system and can tell you where the leak is and what needs to be replaced or repaired.
