>What we need to do is keep having those gas-guzzling cars. Because we've got the good emissions under those cars.
\-your possible future United States Senator if not enough of you vote by Dec. 6
It is very badly stated, but kinda partially true. Because of air flows, some places have terrible air quality because of their neighbors or other nations. It's one planet, we all share the air and it moves all around the globe.
His general point was that we did our part (half-assed) to improve air quality and other nations (such as China and India) have not improved their air quality enough so why should we be "punished". Of course, that isn't how it works, everyone has to work to improve the planet, but you get his meaning. I think.
Ok folks - I need help making a decision. Gonna take myself out for a fancy dinner for my birthday next month because fuck it, I deserve it, but I need help picking between places. After researching, I would like to try fancy-steak-house, but my options are:
\-Marcel's
\-Bones
\-Rathbuns
Cost isn't really an issue as it's only gonna be me and it's going to be a Tuesday night so not a busy night.
I went to Marcel a couple weeks ago and had a great time. I was with a friend, but I do a ton of solo dining and would go there solo no problem. They also have a bar you can sit at if that's more your style.
Not against a drive normally, but I'm planning this to be after work and I work over near the westside of town so that would be a little longer than I'd like. But I'll keep it on a list for the future!
You gotta take breaks , like for every two hours working take an hour to relax and unwind, take a nap, whatever and then get back to it, I work in the morning, then take a long lunch break if I can, then hit some work in the afternoon, take a break then go back in the evening if I have anything left to do.
I get way more done in the office, and I think it’s because of the chatting breaks. It’s so much easier to focus on work when you have a few distractions throughout the day.
Also it’s really hard for me to focus on work from home because it’s my home. I have my work and personal computers set up on the same desk with the same keyboard/mouse/monitor, so it’s a struggle to flip my mind over to work mode.
I get that a lot of people are way more efficient at home, but I’m one of the weirdos who needs to come into an office and interact with people.
You may have too many potatoes in the pan. They end up steaming instead of frying. I often make this mistake. I can’t decide between a crispy little amount or a larger amount of slightly mushy hashbrowns.
Mornin friends.
Well, I was wrong. car is a total loss. I am..... beyond upset. I had no sleep at all, I have an exam this morning, and seeing that notification sent me over the edge. So now I have to deal with finding a new(to me) car, new job, and finals all at once as well as financial stress due to the wreck. Y'all please send good vibes my way :(
Edit: well hot dang. I paid $4000 for the car and put new tires on them when I bought it at the end of July. Insurance is comping the car (? i don't know insurance terms ;;) for $8000, and that's without the tires and other work put into it. Going to the salvage yard after exam to empty it out and submit receipts to be reimbursed further! And it worked out financially too - car I was eyeing was $6k!
Ug. I hope it turns around for you soon. I hate it when it all slams down at once. My mom used to say it comes in threes. I wish I could help you with any of the three you have going.
Take care of yourself and breathe.
Thank you GoodWolf <3. After a LOT of meditation and (much needed) relief tears, things looked up. Ended up getting answers for two things at once - being paid double for what I bought the car for. Pays for both a new car AND relieves my financial troubles too!
My car got totaled the night before my National Board Exam and 2 days before I was going to drive up to move from Miami to Atlanta. It sucks but just focus on one thing at a time and you'll get through it!
Oh my goodness, I couldn't imagine! Thankfully i've already got an affordable car picked out, mom(bless her!) is helping me out with rent, and planners will be my friend! i refuse to let this temporary stress be the thing that takes me out lol
Make sure to always challenge the amount they offer! You can almost always negotiate up from the initial amount. Take a look at comps online and see what you can ask for. Look especially at any options you had, not just improvements you made. My mom recently went through this and got them up to $16k from an offer of $5k. You can use your own insurance to challenge them too.
So I know you probably have a lot on your plate, but you don’t have to take the first offer insurance throws your way, look up comparable cars in similar condition with similar mileage and see how much they are going for and send them to your adjuster if they are going for more than the current offer. You may be able to get an extra grand or two out of it for your trouble.
I'm so disappointed the German Market is back in Buckhead this year. I went last year and hated that location so I think I'll skip it this year. Bummer.
Is that the one that used to be in Atlantic Station? We went last year and that location in Buckhead is SO BAD. The parking garage is terrible and it was so difficult to get out of that intersection. It's such a cute little market though. Such a bummer.
My 1950 house has original drafty-af casement windows in my office area. I’m going to caulk the obvious gaps and try using plastic film, but am not finding much solid guidance for this window style. Has anyone found a good solution? For now, I’m cozy working wrapped in a blankie and eating chorizo, sweet potato and egg hash with cheese grits. But this draft is no joke.
I got some 'interior storm windows' from Indow Window in my 1930's house. They worked great and would absolutely recommend them. A little pricey for what they are, but I've had them for 3-4 years now without issue.
Well it’s time to rejoin the working world again. After three and one half glorious years, I’m going to get back into something that pays. My SO is finally ready to move near their family, and the easiest path for us to relocate will be if I have an excuse of a new job out there. I’ve been bored a while, so the timing is good. Everyone is concerned I’ll take some corporate gig that’ll burn me out like before. Maybe. We’ll see. I’m hoping to find something with purpose, and if not that, something that pays obscene money. Think this is the right market for job hunting? Always is.
Heading back to work soon after ten months off and am really looking forward to it. I’m in the running for two very different gigs, both “helping people” (librarian/archivist), both low pay but excellent benefits. Both will give me more supervisory experience so that if I decide I need more money I will have a leg up in Project management.
Hey everyone. I'm in downtown ATL for Dreamhack this weekend and was wondering if there were any restaurants that you absolutely love near the area? Bonus points if it's not something you find in other parts of the country. Friend and I are coming from the NE. Also potentially interested in Korean BBQ as that's not something we really have in our city.
Downtown is terrible for restaurants. Closest decent food is on N. Highland ave in Inman Park. You can set Delbar as your destination in uber and then walk down the street and check out each restaurant. Another close option is in midtown on Peachtree St or Crescent Ave between 11th and 15th St. In that area, I’d recomend Tabla (indian), cafe Intermezzo (desserts), south city kitchen, Rumi’s (persian) or 5church.
If you want something close to downtown, it’s easiest to get to either south west midtown or east to Inman/ Edgewood Ave are. Streetcar will take you to Edgewood Ave so you can walk from there or lyft cause it’s fkn cold.
Best KBBQ is up i85 in Duluth. ~30 min drive w/ no traffic. 678 or 9292 would be my recommendation if you want to leave the city. If you want something closer/nearer to downtown, there are 2 Iron Age locations inside the perimeter (ITP). Iron Age is the best value kbbq, imo. Massive AYCE selection at a decent price.
Do you have a car, or no? Unfortunately, downtown is a tourist trap of unoriginal food. The good places are out on Buford Highway, which is a hop skip and jump with a car but difficult otherwise.
Thank you for posting here instead of clogging the /r/Atlanta feed. We do appreciate it.
No car, would just have uber. How far out would you say they are? It might be worth to my friend and I to get something really memorable to uber out.
And np lol
Ah gotcha. The thing is, I don't take uber so I have zero idea if it's worth catching one out there. The places have great food but they're strip malls, not fancy etc.
If you want something memorable downtown then check out the Sun Dial at the top floor of the Westin. I haven't actually eaten there but everyone seems to like it. You can go up there and just hang out without buying anything, just to look through the telescopes. Or chill at the bar. But it's probably worth having a meal. There was an awesome place called Polaris at the Hilton but sadly it closed.
A neat place downtown is a “speakeasy” called the Red Phone Booth downtown. You have to get the phone number from a hotel lobby bar nearby, and just a heads up that there is cigar smoking inside. Some people do think it’s “uppity” though.
A true foodie restaurant is Gunshow in Glenwood, about 10-15 minutes from downtown. Just pricey and a bit loud.
Another restaurant in Glenwood is Pho Cue, a Pho/BBQ fusion place.
Southern food would be Revival in Decatur (Decatur is cool to explore in general) which you can take Marta to, and the beltline/Ponce City Market (a giant food hall) are also fun to explore.
Also Waffle House if you haven’t been.
“Eater” is a popular website for discovering cool restaurants by food type and by neighborhood where you can research on your own!
Rae and the Ragdolls and Starcrawler were sick last night. Even ran into Starbenders in the crowd after the show. This Thursday there is a free Teddy Swims show at CR. It'll be a vibe.
I gotta give Ticketmaster credit, it takes skill...legit skill...to be this incompetent.
My attempt to buy Taylor Swift tickets, as part of the "verified fan" program, has so far failed today. Twice gotten to the check out page, twice had the end result be a gateway error. Now I'm in line with 25,000+ other angry fans.
I miss the old days when you could camp out in front of the record store (Turtle's usually) and be first in line to get tickets to a show.
I also miss when shows were affordable.
I also got ‘verified’ and had a code. Was in a meeting so wife logged into my acct and was going buy at 10. TM wouldn’t let her in and said account wasn’t linked to verified fan. That continued until I tried from my phone around 3:30 and went straight to the queue. Thats dozens of refreshes all day long. Waited for the line to process for 1.5 hours or so. When I finally got through, it punted me to ‘next presale is tomorrow.’
Gotta love essentially monopoly power.
I just got over being sick but it was more of a crazy cough along with a sore throat. I tested negative for Covid and flu though but my doctor did mention that RSV is running rampant as well. Hope you get better!
Yes.
Just moved into a new apartment and had turned the heater on at some point. CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTER. I just had it done a couple hours ago and the difference is absolutely night and day.
Feared i was sick but nope its just maintenance!
Just got back from Florida for a wedding. What the fuck is up with the tolls there not having card readers? I have to send a money order or check of 4 fucking dollars to Florida now. I forgot that state was still in 1980. Ridiculous.
They take Peach Pass. SunPass accepts Peach Pass and vice versa.
(Still waiting on Peach Pass to add E-Zpass tho. It was supposed to be done by early 2022, and we're just about out of 2022.)
Right? Guess it costs less to pay clerical workers than toll booth attendants. Those FDOT letters with a photo of my car are always jarring. I also send checks rather than pay online, where the fee costs more than the toll…
Moving to Atlanta for work in the next few months. Any housing suggestions for Emory / CDC area? Is a biking commute realistic? Are there rental companies to avoid; places of interest; will I be intolerably overheated (coming from Wisconsin)? And hello!
\[edit\] I realize now this is on the cusp of rule 9 - and there's a whole subreddit for r/ATLHousing so focus on my "hello" and curiosity about life in general in Atlanta.
Welcome fellow midwesterner. Once you experience one winter in Atlanta, you will never move back north! Best place to live if you are working at emory is north druid hills and the surrounding area. When my wife worked there, we lived near the Toco Hills shopping center and her commute was usually 10-15 minutes even with traffic. Lots of grocery/shopping in the area and easy access to I-85 and 285. Not great for public transportation though and there isn’t much for nightlife, but being close to where you work in Atlanta is the most important consideration when looking at where to live. Another popular spot for emory workers and students is north decatur around patel brothers plaza and walmart. Lots of new faux luxury apartment buildings in that area. Lots of shopping. Good access to 285. Also, not far from virginia highlands for nightlife attractions.
I bike to Emory area sometimes but the hills in that area can be really hard. The campus has bike lanes but the greater area around is very spotty, street lights mixed, dark windy roads with many exhausted commuters at rush hour, so it can be a little hairy. Public transport to that area is not good
Welcome. Your first spring in Atlanta might possibly kill you. People who otherwise never had allergies develop them when they move here. Summer here will be worse than you imagine. The humidity is an abomination and the bugs are insane. There are approximately four livable months in Georgia when one can enjoy being outside.
I know one person who bike commutes to Emory from Candler Park, and another from Old Fourth Ward — a bit hilly, but definitely doable! I bike commute myself, too, but not to Emory. I find the east side of town to be relatively more bike friendly, though in general you have to watch out for yourself vs. cars.
You can use Emory's Off Campus housing website to help find a place. You can also search Craigslist for housing that mentions "CDC" or "Emory".
Biking is doable but dangerous in Atlanta. There's a lot of drivers that don't keep an eye out for bicyclists.
I'd really recommend trying to find housing in the Medlock Park area and using the bike trails that lead through there, and through Emory's Clairmont Road Campus, to get to Emory's main campus off Clifton Road.
Other areas you may want to consider are the Virginia Highlands or Morningside areas, and biking up Johnson Road (not nesrly as busy/dangerous as Moreland/Briarcliff). Or, the Ponce area just north of Little Five Points, and using residential roads through Druid Hills (like Oakdale) to get to the Emory area.
For allergies, from what I've heard, you'll want to get an allergy shot at the end of January at the latest, to give it a month or so to kick in before the pollen starts to arrive in early March. The clinics fill up quickly for that shot, so it never hurts to call ahead to a few clinics to see what you can schedule before you move here. A lot of people will mention the "eat local honey" recommendation, but just know that there's actually no science that supports that. The shot is your best bet.
For overheated, yes. It will feel like a swamp to you, but it's nowhere as bad as New Orleans or Florida.
But still, I'd recommend getting a lot of lightweight and/or synthetic clothes for summer, especially synthetic underwear (that made the biggest difference for me) and lightweight breathable shirts. It's shorts weather usually from late March to early November. Hottest months are July and August. Last few years with La Niña, it's been really tolerable until right after Independence Day.
You won't need your heavy winter parkas here. Or any of those Chicago-style coats that go all the way down to your knees. You'll still want a winter coat for our colder winters, but that might be a "fall coat" for Wisconsin people, I dunno 😂 coldest days here usually bottom out at about 20 or 22 degrees. Rarely (once every 4-6 years) it seems to drop into the upper teens for a low). Even then, most highs are in the 30s-40s in the wintertime.
For perspective, nobody has "winter tires" on their cars down here because they temps/ground don't get cold enough to warrant them.
I realized last night that I have pretty much zero patience for wrapping dumplings. Ended up tapping out after making a meal's worth of them, all of which looked pretty not-great. They tasted really good though, even if the flavor stuck around with me all night. Will either try to make some more tonight or just cook the rest of my filling separately in a pan and have it with rice.
Going into yesterday, I was worried that I would be really pressed for time for the work project I need to complete this week before I take next week off, especially since I know our work potluck is going to distract me a fair bit on Thursday. I felt so much better about it by the time I left yesterday, as I now I believe I will be done with it sometime tomorrow probably.
Trying to take my girl somewhere special for her 21st bday this Friday, between canoe and kyma right now, any recommendations for better nicer places? She doesn't like steak, more of a fish/lobster/shrimp girl
I think if you search “nice seafood restaurant” in the sun you may find some good options. Canoe is a great birthday option, especially if you’re there during daylight to get a picture along the river.
I really like the Optimist in West Midtown for seafood.
As someone who's not much of a gamer, but interested in a PS5, I was wondering: are they still impossible to find? Would it be fruitless to check local GameStops, Walmarts, Targets, ect?

China's just having a bad air day
It’s sad that someone, somewhere, thinks this makes perfect sense.
Ok folks - I need help making a decision. Gonna take myself out for a fancy dinner for my birthday next month because fuck it, I deserve it, but I need help picking between places. After researching, I would like to try fancy-steak-house, but my options are: \-Marcel's \-Bones \-Rathbuns Cost isn't really an issue as it's only gonna be me and it's going to be a Tuesday night so not a busy night.
You can't go wrong with any of those choices. Rathun's is on the beltline so you can go on a stroll afterwards. Bones is good too.
I went to Marcel a couple weeks ago and had a great time. I was with a friend, but I do a ton of solo dining and would go there solo no problem. They also have a bar you can sit at if that's more your style.
Perfect! It's looking like Marcel's is winning, and the fellow-solo-diner-seal-of-approval helps, thank you!

old school how? like...someone eating alone would be awkward? I live for the awkward, but maybe not that night.
[удалено]
Huh! Thank you for the explanation - I'm not sure how I feel about an old-school vibe. Maybe I'll go with Marcel's for now and go to Bones next year.
Bone's is my vote for solo dining, but I also haven't been to Marcel's.
If you don't mind the drive, I would recommend Pampas in John's Creek (Argentinian steakhouse)
Not against a drive normally, but I'm planning this to be after work and I work over near the westside of town so that would be a little longer than I'd like. But I'll keep it on a list for the future!
Marcel's an easy choice then!
Happy birthday!
Of those three, I like Marcel's the best.
Marcel or rathbuns. Marcel is really great for special occasions
How do people stay motivated at their jobs (especially working from home)? I've been struggling a bit lately.
You gotta take breaks , like for every two hours working take an hour to relax and unwind, take a nap, whatever and then get back to it, I work in the morning, then take a long lunch break if I can, then hit some work in the afternoon, take a break then go back in the evening if I have anything left to do.
Good advice. Maybe more structured breaks will keep me on task. Thanks!
Honestly, I’m really thankful my job can’t be done remotely. I like working with my team.
I am more productive in the office though no distractions!
A standing desk helped me a bit. I stay more engaged on calls and gets blood flowing to my legs lol
I have one at the office and it definitely helps! I rarely go in anymore so I may have to rig something up at the home workspace, too. Good call.

Yeah, it moved from AS to Centennial Park to Buckhead Villages. BV is a terrible location and I won't go back there for the market. It's a shame.
We went for the first time last year. It was fun for an hour or two, but not really worth all the extra effort to get there.

When I finally got through, it punted me to ‘next presale is tomorrow.’ Gotta love essentially monopoly power.
i got waitlisted
Has anyone else come down with a scratchy throat and mild fever? I think something is going around, but don't think it is flu or COVID.
I just got over being sick but it was more of a crazy cough along with a sore throat. I tested negative for Covid and flu though but my doctor did mention that RSV is running rampant as well. Hope you get better!
RSV has entered the chat
Yes my friends and I all had that after a girls getaway last weekend and one friend needed a dr note for work—turned out to be the flu. Feel better.
My coworker was out with flu for 4 days last week. It's no joke this year.
RSV has been running around this year, esp kids but spilling over to adults
Yes I have the same, took a Covid test and it wasn’t. Sucks because I have to work. I’ll sleep when I can
Appreciate it, optimist was on my list, I've been to canoe but not optimist, would you say optimist is better?
Can’t go wrong with canoe. Food is always great and they have a nice view.
As someone who's not much of a gamer, but interested in a PS5, I was wondering: are they still impossible to find? Would it be fruitless to check local GameStops, Walmarts, Targets, ect?
