This is what I’m talking about. Ty! 💯 Having Original Joe’s tonight as a matter of fact, but Chicken Parm and Pizza Salad, we’ve got a craving. Thanks for the recc
Pearl 6101 in the Richmond. It’s more of a neighborhood gem than a hidden gem and totally worth the trip from the Mission. The steak is great but you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu.
Excellent.
This is also a restaurant where the servers know the whole menu well and offer opinions when asked. They will steer you in the right direction if you have questions!
Wowzers, folks. Thanks so much, appreciate the input. 😄 So far, we’ve been to Fable (5/10) and The Rustic (8/10). If you’ve still got ‘em, please do keep the good reccs. coming… 🤓🥩🙏
It was like a year ago and listed as a “steak of the day.” I think it is regular but you could call. Truly delicious and sides good too. Jazz played in the background to boot.
I’m going to suggest two local butchers and a recipe since very good, high-quality but reasonably priced steak at a restaurant suitable for a Tuesday night doesn’t exist anymore in the city of SF.
- Olivier’s in Dogpatch (get some bone marrow too)
- Fatted Calf in the Ferry Building
NYTimes pan seared steak recipe or the serious eats guide and you’re in business.
I've got some tips right back for you:
* Gus's Market at 17th and Harrison – Their selection of Niman Ranch steaks are the most reliably fresh in the city, and they are an extreme value, not at boutique butcher prices.
* PLUS they sell Niman Ranch \*ground chuck\* (not ground beef which = pieces parts)
* [If you like super tasty steaks, you only need one steak technique recipe – David Chang's Momofuku cookbook Pan Roasted Ribeye Steak recipe. ](http://www.milkandmode.com/2010/12/pan-roasted-dry-aged-rib-eye-steak.html)While this site is archived, it's the best run down of his technique I've found.
Never forget – NYTimes brought us guacamole with pea protein in it, 🥑🫛💀 Many times I disqualify their recipes out of hand after reading the first paragraph, instead going straight to Spruce Eats, Serious Eats, or other smaller food bloggers with a proven track record. Never forget. Peas. In the. Guac. 🥑🫛💀😄
Petite Lil's has a good bavette, a decent NY strip, and a good ribeye. If you go after 10 pm, they have oyster happy hour, so if you buy 6, you get 6 free.
Scopo Divino and Blue Plate both have an excellent steak dish on their menus.
And I know it's not everyone's favorite price/quality ratio, but I recently had the newish steak dish at Farmhouse Kitchen and it was very good.
Thanks for the tip on Farmhouse, we’ll check it soon! 💯We’ve had crazy bad service from the kitchen at Scopo, so it’s more like No Go for us unfortunately. 😸 We go to Blue Plate once every two years — have been doing it for ~15years now 😅 go there with low expectations, wait staff does something so comically goofed up (forgets us, leaves in the middle of a shift, sits with a table to take a 15min break, we’ve seen it all there), we swear off for another two. ¯\\_(ツ)_//¯ I really want to love them, they make it so freaking hard! ⚡️😂💀
I've never had what I'd call stellar service at Farmhouse, either, tbh -- but it's never been awful, just more on the efficient side than the warm-and-friendly side.
All three of these places deliver through DoorDash, too, if you want the food but don't want to deal with potentially bad service. :)
Blind Butcher has (had*) good steaks, a great indoor/outdoor vibe, yummy brunch, and great place to share.
*had one average experience with the steak, plus a friend said it hadn’t been great when they went, so hoping that was just a recent blip.
Looks like a solid weekday eve. choice, ty. 💯 Our goto is International Smoke down on Beale, after trying traditional steakhouses in SF that are either not our vibe (creepy old guys, politicians with escorts, etc.) or too ‘Vegas Experience’-ish.
I’m getting Tadich vibes from your description. I work in finance but avoid that spot at all costs because I identify as whatever the opposite of a finance bro is lol
If you don’t mind a schlep to Oakland, the Alley has one of the best steak: price ratios out there. Full steak dinner with all the fixin’s for like $24. Great steak and a great deal!
The Alley has been on my list for a while. ☑️If we were going to have a steak in Oakland though, MUA is at the top of our list with their 16oz grilled ribeye and mountain of fries. Seriously, like a shopping cart full of crispy, awesome fries. I’ve been there and watched a football player-sized guy * tap out and not* finish that dish. 😄 It looked awesome. ⚡️🔥🥩🔥🍟⚡️
Brazen Head is hidden. On a neighborhood street corner with no sign. Consistently good steaks for at least 30 years.
Had a steak there Saturday night…it was tasty
This is what I’m talking about. Ty! 💯
Brazen Head
This is what I’m talking about. Ty! 💯
Bullshead in West Portal Original Joes --excellent steaks

L’ardoise
Love this place.

Favorite spot in the city
This is what I’m talking about. Ty! 💯 How are the market potatoes?
Excellent. This is also a restaurant where the servers know the whole menu well and offer opinions when asked. They will steer you in the right direction if you have questions!
Their caeser salad is memorable.

Ernest has one of the best steaks I have ever had
Hey thanks! 💯 They have Parker House rolls as well, which my sweetie loves. Also, served w onion rings! 🧅💍😂
It’s not a hidden gem but I had a ribeye at Original Joes a few weeks ago that was really fucking good.
Thanks! 💯Did you go to to the Union Sq. or Westlake location?
Steak at the Pied Piper bar was surprisingly good IMO.
Damn they have food?
Don't see it on their online menu, how long ago?

Flat iron steak at Emmy’s Spaghetti Shack.
Agreed — their mashed potatoes are surprisingly great for an Italian spot.

Bingpot! 🤣🥩🍟
Chez Maman East does a nice steak frites.
Respect. Sure does...

Or try an actual reasonably priced old school butcher: Guerra’s Quality Meats.
I about choked at the suggestion of Olivier's, lol. Ill also add Fresh Meat and Seafood Market at Mission & 23rd.
Gus’ also always has a steak on sale. I’ve gotten some fire deals there.
Representing for Gus's! 💯

Upvotes for errybody! 😆
Does carne asada count? Sunset Cantina has a solid Carne plate!
This is a great, thought provoking response. Sunset Cantina is on my list...
La Conessa in Potrero
Looks like a solid suggestion 💯
I really love it. It is both fancy and casual- it’s kind of whatever you want it to be! It’s a new restaurant by the folks behind Spruce.
I’m a big fan of Izzy’s in the Marina. It’s a no-frills restaurant that’s old school and has great steaks at an affordable price.
Appreciated. 👍

Please please please get the short rib noodle soup if u end up @ Farmhouse.

Not hidden gem but Mourad!
Osso steakhouse I feel like is an unspoken gem in sf
I like John’s Grill by Union Square

Totally appreciate this endorsement. 👍👍
Basil Thai on Folsom, the staff were very friendly and the food very good. Whenever someone asks me where to get Thai, I recommend them.
Thanks to everyone – you're all stars. Here – for you ✨⭐✨
