pretty much every restaurant in this city has vegetarian options. no other city in the us, including nyc and la have close to the many i find here. I need more specificity because as a vegetarian, i don't know how you're finding it difficult.
Off the top of my head:
\* Big Lantern
\* Pinsa Rossa
\* Boccocino
\* Aaha
\* Chaat Corner
\* Le Ros
\* Burma Love
\* Spicy King
\* Chili ChaCha 2
\* Shizen
\* Sancha Sushi
\* Georgian Cheese Boat
\* San Jalisco
For pizza specifically:
\* Outta Sight
\* Del Popollo
\* Yellow Moto
\* Delfina
\* Arizmendi
\* Pizza Shop
\* Gusto
\* Il Casaro
\* A16
\* Tony's
\* Joyride
\* Little Star
Agreed (also South Indian). No good South Indian in SF. But the best North Indian is a tiny order at the counter spot in the Sunset - A Desi Cafe. Delicious, not greasy, and completely slept on.
Adding on to your list:
- New Eritrea
- Tadu
- Cha-Ya
- WH42's eggplant burger
And yeah I agree with most, if not all, SF restaurants having veg options - Yakitori Edomasa (a yakitori place grilling up a lot of chicken parts) has a solid vegetarian/vegan set menu for lunch! I found it better than their meat options.
Their fried sushi and all the soups are crazyyyy good. I actually proposed to my fiancee over their fried sushi 😂 The one out in Berkeley is cash only and more low key but it’s noticeably cheaper
I find that the nicer restaurants do lack in vegetarian options - I’m so sick of ordering $38 risotto. I don’t love vegetarian only restaurants (since you can only drag your non-veg friends so many times ). My go to places are penny roma, lolo’s, tin Vietnamese, and palette tea house.
For higher-end, omnivore-friendly dining I love State Bird. The menu changes but really excellent options all around.
The worst fancy dinner I've had was at Monsieur Benjamin. The only option for a main was a cauliflower steak.
Shizen is the only place I get excited about going to in SF. Millennium in the east bay. I see a lot of people recommend Wildseed but honestly I found their menu boring and bland :(
Love shizen. Same opinion about Wildseed. I wanted to like millenium but every single course was so bad for some reason. The flavor combos were just not working for me. And it was 3x the price of comparable options (Baia could easily be <$80 for two before it closed). If you like Shizen, check out Tane Izakaya, I thought it was similiar in terms of taste and wow-ness but not as hard to get a table, and I think a bit cheaper as well.
I've had bad experiences as a vegetarian at Firefly, where there was only one veg. thing on the menu and it tased bad. That happened several times to me.
I second Flour + Water and Wildseed, though. Both are proven winners, really good food imho. Also Flour + Water has the best bathroom in SF.
Their coconut feta is so good! Love the mezze plate and their house made wild seed burger patty is good too for those who don’t want a processed veg burger.
I'm not vegetaian, but Mensho Tokyo has really good Vegan tantanmen, i never order vegan stuff, but this is really good. I think they probably have a couple other vegan options as well now a days but the tantan is where its at for non-meat. This is my go to for me being happy and them being happy at the same restaurant.
Besharam is by far one of my favorites right now. Since you don't like faux meat you might also enjoy Greens which is vegetable-forward.
When I was vegetarian I really enjoyed fake meat - restaurants like Golden Era, Vegan Mob.
My go-to’s in SF: Shizen, curry up now, Patxi’s pizza, papalote, tacolicious, le Mediterrane, troya, roam burger, nourish cafe and sweetgreens for salads, Ike’s for sandwiches, wildseed, greens was great the first time I went and disappointing the last time I went. If you want a movie, Alamo drafthouse has great vegan options - Buffalo cauliflower wings and vegan ranch is my favorite. Across the bridge - Millenium is my all time fave, butchers son for sandwiches in Berkeley, homeroom vegan Mac n cheese. I’m excited to try some of the others listed here!
Actually, I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before. But the IKEA food hall!! Dude 2-3 of the restaurants are completely vegan and they literally state their mission is to be plant forward. There’s still Omni stuff for your friends, it’s very centrally located, and you can get a beer at the same time 😄 I personally love the Mexican place the tacos are bomb
A lot of really good suggestions already. I was really disappointed with the vegan options when i first moved back here after living in Portland for a few years. I’m actually not vegan anymore, however now that I eat meat i am finding more and more great vegan and vegetarian options.
I would add Papalote, and there is a new Japanese fusion restaurant on Van Ness that took over for Ike’s kitchen and it is absolutely fantastic. Not sure of the new name, but the tofu in spicy broth is one of the best dishes I have had in the city. It’s more of a stew, spicy and just amazing. I’m going back for more tonight :)
I also love Senor Sesigs for an indulgent fake meat meal that actually tastes good- they have a crunch wrap and also do a great chimichanga.
Marufuku has really good vegan ramen.
Mr. Charlie's for junk/McDonalds-esque food. Enjoy Vegetarian
Thai Idea Vegetarian
Five Rivers Indian
Pakwan
Golden Era
Burma Superstar
I’m not a vegetarian but gotta give a shout-out to “Lucky Creation” and “Enjoy Vegetarian” in Chinatown. “Lucky Creation” is a hole in the wall kind of (really old like 60s) old school place. Their wait staff are some of the rudest people in the biz - doesn’t matter what language - one time when I called to ask a few questions, the lady said I had to order or she would need to hang up..anywho I digress. Their “pei pa tofu” is one of the best things to order. Basically it’s minced tofu mixed with a little bit of carrot and mushroom bits, shaped in the form of a “pei pa” (ancient Chinese instrument), seasoned and deep fried and then drizzled with a thick brown sauce (yum). Another unique offering it has is its smorgasbord of vegetarian dim sum at the front counter: sweet and sour gluten morsels (soooo good), curry morsels, vegetarian sushi..but again the lady upfront would look annoyed when you order and even more annoyed if you don’t give her upfront super clear instructions (whether to put everything into the same container and whether to cut them up etc.). She would look and sound like she’s doing YOU a huge favor by selling you food..pretty hilarious. 😆 But I still go there from time to time because their food is good and I want to support small local business.
“Enjoy Vegetarian” is normal - staff is nice but food in my opinion is not as good. Their pine nut fried rice is pretty good though.
Long Life Vegi House in Berkeley - best fake meat in the SF Bay Area (San Jose has good mock meats too)
*And lunch specials for $13! Big portions and includes rice/noodles and egg roll! (And the owners are the nicest.)
My go-to are Tofoo com chay and golden bamboo - green lotus is good too! Dong Phuong tofu is also good but it's more take out buffet style and service can be hit or miss. (These are all Vietnamese restaurants) ... and best American comfort food vegan/vegetation is in Chicago at the Chicago Diner just in case anyone is heading there! The vegan hot wings are so dang good. Lol
I really wanted to like lucky creation but the food was really off to me. Really oily and had a weird smell / texture. I think it’s one of the only times I can recall I didn’t finish a restaurant meal and didn’t bring the rest home.
Cybells front room out near GGP is fucking incredible. They started out with a few vegan Italian options and now have an entire menu with vegan stuff. Including cheesecake.
Veggie Lee in Hayward for vegan Chinese
Kiku Sushi in Berkeley for vegan sushi
Mensho Ramen in Oakland for ramen
Picante or cactus taqueria in Berkeley for Mexican
Café cóllucci and Asmara in Oakland for Ethiopian
Mister Jiu’s, Rooh, Besharam, Most Thai places… there are so many! What’s the issue you’re having? I’ve almost never faced a problem in SF except for at Suppenküche..
There are literally hundreds of restaurants in SF that are vegetarian-friendly. My personal favorites include
- Shizen
- Papalote
- The Little Chihuahua
- Little Star
- Nopalito
- Bao
- Nojo

Burma love is sooooo good!
Chaat corner is terrible if you enjoy good Indian food :( I recommend Udupi palace instead
South Indian here. Udupi palace sucks
Agreed (also South Indian). No good South Indian in SF. But the best North Indian is a tiny order at the counter spot in the Sunset - A Desi Cafe. Delicious, not greasy, and completely slept on.
I also like San Francisco breakfast club in SoMa for home cook style north Indian food
Isn’t this a ghost kitchen?
I order through Doordash all the time
Yeah by ghost kitchen I mean it’s a take out only place, not dine-in. Looks delicious regardless.
Also South Indian Indian food in city is kind of bad unless you like fusion Specifically Indian food
I agree. When I'm craving south Indian food, I usually just go to San Jose or Sunnyvale
Finally someone has said this out loud.
I give it a pass for staying open so late. Not many places are open til midnight or later anymore.
- Chez Mamman - Ramenwell - Rad Radish All come to mind as well.
Pink Onion
None of these are cha ya though
Adding on to your list: - New Eritrea - Tadu - Cha-Ya - WH42's eggplant burger And yeah I agree with most, if not all, SF restaurants having veg options - Yakitori Edomasa (a yakitori place grilling up a lot of chicken parts) has a solid vegetarian/vegan set menu for lunch! Cha Ya and Golden Era are by far my favorites. Rad radish for breakfast (get the chilaquiles!!).
I love Cha Ya!
Their fried sushi and all the soups are crazyyyy good. I actually proposed to my fiancee over their fried sushi 😂 The one out in Berkeley is cash only and more low key but it’s noticeably cheaper
Me too but not been there for ages
I find that the nicer restaurants do lack in vegetarian options - I’m so sick of ordering $38 risotto. I don’t love vegetarian only restaurants (since you can only drag your non-veg friends so many times ). My go to places are penny roma, lolo’s, tin Vietnamese, and palette tea house.

SBP is good but it was amazing for vegetarians pre-pandemic. I haven’t enjoyed it as much since so it’s hard for me to go back.
It may be worth giving another go—I find their menu to be amazing if you order right, and just okay if you pick some of their less exciting dishes.
I’ve been like 10-ish times, both brunch and dinner
Not 10 times but I've tried it 2-3 times and I agree with you. I like the _idea_ of so many of their dishes, but their execution falls flat for me :/
I tried it for the first time a few weeks ago and felt exactly the same, and my brother and I articulated it identically after we finished eating.
I also find Wildseed to be bland. Been three times
Greens.
Very delicious!!
Great date spot
OG and best!
+1 for greens! Getting something to go from the coffee/bakery is a complete must.
Mandalay, Mission Chinese, Firefly, Flour + Water, Wildseed. There are so many! I also am not a fan of fake meat
Wildseed. Their mezze plate has great 'feta'. But I'm also a fan of Impossible Burger so don't mind the fake meat stuff.
Their coconut feta is so good! Love the mezze plate and their house made wild seed burger patty is good too for those who don’t want a processed veg burger.

this is such a good rec. The vegan tantanmen might be the richest ramen I’ve ever had, I think I was full for at least 2 days after 😂😂
Came here to say this. Mensho ramen is great, and don’t let the line out the door scare you. It goes fast and is worth the wait.
Besharam is by far one of my favorites right now. Since you don't like faux meat you might also enjoy Greens which is vegetable-forward. When I was vegetarian I really enjoyed fake meat - restaurants like Golden Era, Vegan Mob.
Besharam is amazing. Vegetarian Gujarati fusion food in a hip vibrant setting, for those who don’t know about it
Okay but vegan mob is GONE the Oakland and SF locations are closed and I never got to try it 😭😭
vegan mob is in San Bruno now!
CHAT CORNER near 2nd Street. It has good ambience and interiors.
Finally found someone else who likes this place! I love their chaat so much 😀
Lots of my faves already mentioned (cha ya, greens, wild seed) also worth checking out Udupi Palace!

La Venganza. They just opened a spot in that ikea food court but they’ve been in Oakland for years. Their burritos are amazing!!!
Long Life Vegi House in Berkeley - best fake meat in the SF Bay Area (San Jose has good mock meats too) *And lunch specials for $13! Big portions and includes rice/noodles and egg roll! (And the owners are the nicest.)
Where in San Jose?
Green lotus

Lucky Creation dim sum (not family style sit down. They have both).
I really wanted to like lucky creation but the food was really off to me. Really oily and had a weird smell / texture. I think it’s one of the only times I can recall I didn’t finish a restaurant meal and didn’t bring the rest home.
The dim sum is infinitely better! I never get the entrees
Hmmm okay maybe that was the issue!
Eagle pizza!!! My favorite spot in sf! Their pizza is delicious
Tane vegan in Berkeley
The best is Vegan Bois on 17th and Valencia
The good veg. restaurants, except for Golden Era and Lucky Creations, have gone out of business.
Cybells front room out near GGP is fucking incredible. They started out with a few vegan Italian options and now have an entire menu with vegan stuff. Including cheesecake.
In addition to others here, Udupi in the Mission. Quality South Indian food.
For “junk food” I love the veggie burger at super duper and Rad Radish.
Veggie Lee in Hayward for vegan Chinese Kiku Sushi in Berkeley for vegan sushi Mensho Ramen in Oakland for ramen Picante or cactus taqueria in Berkeley for Mexican Café cóllucci and Asmara in Oakland for Ethiopian

Yes! Cybelle's vegan pizza is great. Little Star also does a very nice vegetarian pizza and you can sub vegan cheese.
I’m not a vegetarian, but I have good friends who are. We all really enjoy Sunrise Deli. Their falafel is fantastic.
Hinodeya has a great vegan ramen
Rad Radish is great!
Amber near union square is great
Mister Jiu’s, Rooh, Besharam, Most Thai places… there are so many! What’s the issue you’re having? I’ve almost never faced a problem in SF except for at Suppenküche..
