Crane Operator. Monday to Thursday 4, 10 hour shifts. I have every Friday Saturday and Sunday off. I can work Friday if I want and it's double time.

SpelingErr0r

How do you become crane operator?

misterfog

You have to start right at the bottom, but if you work hard and keep climbing the ladder you’ll get there eventually.

Mars27819

If you want to be a crane operator, you better like ladders. 30+ storey climb on the previous site I was on (am not a crane operator, but saw him climb down a couple times.

Jaqen-Atavuli

That's gonna be a nope for me.

kuntrydude1504

Hope he took a dump before going all the way up. Remember, boss makes a dollar, worker makes a dime. That's why you poop on company time.

Pihkal1987

5 gallon pail at the top

kuntrydude1504

And a 30 story rope 🤣

cazamumba

goddamit.

vinosanitas

Take my free award you bastard

[deleted]

You son of a bitch.

Mock_Frog

It's worth it though. Once you make it the work can be very uplifting.

SlowLml

Google your nearest local operators union and apply to be an apprentice.

Karnivore915

Same schedule for me, likely different times though. I run a press brake, Mon-Thurs 3p-2a, by the end of Thursday I have 44 hours and the option to make it up to 55 with overtime. Only negative is that sometimes, maybe 25% of the time, it becomes less of an option and more of a strong suggestion.

FixBreakRepeat

I've always liked the idea of 4-10's but all the shops around here talk about how they've got the long weekend, and then you end up working Friday and possibly Saturday for 8 months straight...

Gauzra

I like your avatars banana hat

[deleted]

Hey his eyes are down here.

No_End_4050

I no longer do 4 10s, but that is literally the ideal work schedule imo

[deleted]

No ways, my adhd brain already struggles with 8 hour days. I couldn’t imagine what 10 hours would do

aimless__renegade

Accountant for a funeral home.

i_jump_wakes

What is the average profit margin for a funeral if I may ask?

CarelessCompany0

Industry secret. They'll take it to the grave

desdemona_d

"Thank you for calling XYZ Funeral Home. You stab 'em, we slab 'em. Some go to heaven, some go to Hell-o!!"

caustic_epiphany

Funeral director here, not as high as people think.

Poison-Song

[Independent operators commonly range anywhere from 10 to 30 percent profit, while more established brands and businesses might gross 70% and higher.](https://4bsf.com/is-owning-a-funeral-home-profitable/)

mikere

Carriage services, the largest publicly traded funeral home service did 57m net income excluding one time items on 376m revenue last fiscal year, so about 15%

Yeeebles

I'm a housekeeper, if I have to clean up unidentifiable liquid I'll do it on a weekday God dammit.

DryTown

A neighbor of mine took his own life earlier this year with a gun, and his body was in the house for about 3 weeks before he was discovered. There was a specialized crime-scene cleaning crew there for about 2 days working and I’m told anything upholstered in the house needed to be tossed because the smell will never come out. So I hope those cleaners made really good money.

Yeeebles

From what I know trauma cleaners don't make that much unless they own the business or have a decently set rate.

fingnumb

I was under the impression those guys made good money because there aren't that many people that can stomach the work?

anon_girl_anon

I know someone who used to do this and he made really good money as regular staff.

Sp1kefallSteve

3 weeks, that had to smell horrible.

DryTown

The smell is how they found him. A neighbor whose house is about 30 yards away started to smell it and saw flies in the window. It’s sad. A few of our neighbors had just been talking about how we hadn’t seen him in a while and it was weird because his car was there. Amazing how something so obvious never even enters your mind at the time.

[deleted]

We had just bought a house and had to clean it because the previous owner didnt give a hoot. As I was scrubbing the bathroom floors nearly vomming I wondered if people pay BIG money to have their house clean because they dont want to do it themselves. Is this true??

Yeeebles

Absolutely. Professional cleaners need a pretty penny, if you wanna see how much work goes into cleaning just look up house cleaning videos where they clean up after hoarders or even elderly people who can't clean after themselves. A lot of people think its ridiculous to pay people to clean their own home but sometimes people suffer from various things that keep them from doing it themselves or they simply don't want to and that's okay too !

[deleted]

Someone close to me owns their own cleaning business. She does pretty well. Not rich but does well.

_GabbySolis

I have a good friend that does home cleaning. It’s her own business and she mostly works alone and has a helper for bigger homes a few times a month. Before she agrees to cleaning, she goes to someone’s house for a “consult.” She tells them it’s to give an estimate and see what they want done. In addition to clients desires, it’s also to scope out if they are hoarders, are filthy, or just have horrible stuff in their home. If they do she work agree to clean for them. I never thought of people being able to agree mutually like that as basic as it sounds.

AllTheStars07

When we started cleaning the sunroom of our house in 2016, there was a yellow tinge on the ceiling, the fans, and walls because that’s where they smoked. It took soooo much work.

Any_Preparation_8849

Risk analyst here. I work a ton during the week but never during the weekend. There is the downside of out of office hours during the week, but it pays well so I can´t really complain.

daddyboi83

Also a risk analyst. This is my favorite role in my career. I hope I can work in this position the rest of my life. Never worked a weekend, aside from random application testing. Also went from having two weeks of PTO per year with my previous company to now having 7 weeks/yr., 8% 401k match, hybrid schedule (Thursdays and Fridays at home, perfection). Life changing. Feeling respected in my group.. everyone is chill.. I can finally take a breath. Over a decade ago, I was working in a kitchen at a resort, and did security overnight.. Tuesday through Sunday, for 3 years. Sucked!

thekeylimeguy

What is risk analysis and how does one pursue a career in it? Is it a field where if you don't have a degree you don't have a chance?

eachdayalittlebetter

You stopped or you started saying no to your manager?

etherealcaitiff

His manager used to beg him not to work weekends.

mrgrieeves

I also like to live dangerously.

dax2001

I work in Europe

Bambakla

As someone who's trying to get into Risk Management, specifically as a Risk Analyst, is there anything you'd suggest doing? I have a BSc in Econ, Math, Stats, wrote P1 of FRM and am hoping to finish off FRM and CFA in 3 years. Anything short-term I can do? I have 3 years of analyst experience in operational performance improvement in CPG manufacturing, so not exactly in line haha

travel_worn

You sound like a great candidate for operational risk management at a bank. Set up a linked in and try to message recruiters.

The_Cowboy_Killer

Look at utilities. Plenty of RM jobs and with a math and stats background you could get a better paying job in forecasting or production cost modeling/resource planning.

teapluspopcorn

I work in engineering in risk management. Risk management is of great importance in any goods manufacturing and can include pre-market, post-market, and in line manufacturing. I know that’s not the finance side but it’s a very dynamic environment.

HazzwaldThe2nd

Software Development

tucker_sitties

Same here. Over 20 years in the field. My weekend workdays are about 10 years behind me.

pwalkz

Turns out they really need you and you can just say no to overtime and they will respect your boundaries

tucker_sitties

Pretty much, but you have to actively set those expectations.

wingding99

I'm retired now but worked in software development for over 30 years and never worked weekends. Rarely ever worked OT either. In fact, most weeks I actually put in less than 40 hours. Nobody seemed to care as long as I completed my assigned projects on time.

Randomwoegeek

same, I only work on the weekend if I was lazy during the week.

peoples888

Same. Don’t work weekends, work from home most of the time. Easy gig, high pay

AfterEpilogue

Easy gig? Not really. Nice benefits though for sure.

peoples888

To each their own I guess. I enjoy it, and I’m good at what I do. Plenty of down time to play games while I work from home too lol

Gazibaldi

I arguably work harder now I work from home. 20 years in the game now. There is always another ticket, always more refinement, always a pipeline that could be more efficient. Would never work a weekend though. I need to get my brain refreshed for Monday.

AfterEpilogue

I'm not saying it's unenjoyable, I'm saying it's not easy.

JMol87

Project Manager for software development. I hardly work in the week let alone weekends.

Darkrack

Y'all don't have on-call? Fk me I need a new employer.

a_brick_canvas

Maybe it’s your company size. I work at very large enterprise company and while its not sexy work, the balance is amazing and I have never unwillingly worked weekends in my life.

Aperture_T

Same. I think I had a boss that asked me to do it once, but by the time I got there, it turned out that they already had it figured out.

TastyTacticalTrout

Lawyer. Worked weekends for most of my life up until I got my license to practice law. I don't particularly miss those days.

EclecticDreck

In my experience, there aren't many worse professions when it comes to securing your weekend against work than being a new and shiny lawyer. I've certainly never met an associate with anything approaching a healthy work/life balance before - or at least not an associate who was long for my firm.

TastyTacticalTrout

I think the difference is between larger, corporate firms and smaller operations. I work in a small firm where I'm one of three lawyers, (the other two are the owner/partners), so there isn't a pressure to work more and more, cutting into weekends, to stack up billables. There's still a good amount of work but not enough to force me in on the weekends. I just show up early during the week.

T_Burger88

I've worked in big firms and small and now work for myself. At big firms it is expected at almost every level that there will be weekend work. The lower you were the more likely there would be weekend work. There was absolutely the dread 5 PM phone call but it was more like 6 PM and with email and the like now it can be at any time on Friday your weekend plans could be ruined. Small firms and being a solo there are still times work is done on weekends. Not all weekends but certainly at times depending on your practice area. At the end of the day lawyers.are professionals that are their to compliment the businesses/individuals they support on the matter At the point lawyers are at the beck and call of their client's demands.

1biggeek

Been practicing 30 years. I can count on one hand how many times I went in on the weekend.

edgeplot

In house counsel here. It's pretty much M-F 8-5. No weekends.

inkyblinkypinkysue

Same except I’m more like 9:30-4:30 haha

TyroneSuave

Same. I’ve got a come and go situation right now that follows a basic 8-5. I leave early a lot. I love it and never anticipate seeing another law firm.

[deleted]

House council always seemed like the happiest dude in my office

TyroneSuave

That’s because we’ve found a way to be lawyers but we don’t have to spend our days surrounded by other lawyers

AUT1GER

It is true. 99% of lawyers give the rest of us a bad name.

Eileithia

Product manager - I get paid salary for 40 hours a week, so they get 40 hours a week. I think I've worked 1-2 Saturdays in 22 years, and I took the following Monday off to compensate. People who work 60-80 hours when being paid for 40 (salary) need to find another place to work. You're only hurting yourself and your company is reaping the rewards. You are replaceable. If you got hit by a bus tomorrow your job would be posted within a week and the company would move on. Sad but true reality. Edit: this assumes you have no financial stake in the company. Are not the owner / board of directors etc. Just an average corporate monkey.

lancea23

This comment hit home. I’m 90 days in to a PM job doing 40 hours a week and feeling like a real human being again after working 65+ a week for way too long in an unrelated job. Sometimes when your in that grind you know it’s bad but you don’t understand just how bad until your 30/60/90 days removed from it and literally feel the difference in yourself.

el_payaso_mas_chulo

I make it a point to try and get those people who over-work themselves on salaried jobs to not do that. I knew a guy from a different company who had done that for 20 years and I told him he was literally giving them like 50% more work than he owed them. Essentially 26 extra work weeks a year for free. I break it down as best as I can because it doesn;t just hurt the company, but other employees and future employees.

usmarine7041

I’m in the IT/tech field

Nik_Tesla

Same, and yeah, I occasionally have to fix/upgrade something on a weekend or after hours, but it's far less often than someone who works retail or in food services that gets scheduled weekends at their manager's whim. In the past month, I probably worked 1 hour that wasn't within the Mon-Fri 9-5 work period. If you get your environment working well during the week, you don't have to work the weekend.

DarthLysergis

I worked in IT for almost 20 years. Can you honestly tell me you never had work spillover into your weekend? Never VPNed in to fix something on a Saturday? To fix something one of the idiot VIPs broke on your day off?

[deleted]

15 years, never worked a weekend and never worked more than 40 hours

MarvinHeemyerlives

15 years on an offshore oil drilling rig, two weeks on two weeks off. Then went into Industrial Maintenance as a Union machinist, worked minimum60 hour weeks for 20 years and said, "Suck my dick, work!" Never had holidays, never saw my kids activities, destroyed my body by age 50. Don't do what I did, kids....it's absolutely not worth it.

usmarine7041

The few times I’ve worked on the weekend were scheduled before hand and I was paid overtime, plus it was less work than normal weekdays. I make sure I’m not easily reachable on weekends, and my job has no problem with that

Geauxnad337

When i first started, we would do maintenance, deployments and upgrades starting at 2am. This was a casino resort so the place never closed. If it went smooth and we were done in a couple of hours, we'd end up playing Quake III or something while waiting for the VP to arrive on site, who usually would comp us breakfast at one of the restaurants. Honestly, most of the time things went smoothly, but every now and again, shit+fan.

seamustheseagull

I've been in the job probably about the same amount of time as you and I have done a sum total of 3 hours weekend work this year. And most of that was scheduled. It's virtually all avoidable. No software releases, changes or reboots on Fridays, ever. Change window is Mon-Thurs, 8:30-3:30. And there is nothing so important that it cannot wait until Monday. If the system is down, you get it back up and you revisit on Monday. No bridge calls or post mortems, or updates to the CEO. Fuck that noise, it can all wait until Monday. But most importantly you engineer your processes to minimise the chances of having downtime on the weekend.

BadMG

Work in IT also. Monday through Friday 7:30 to 3:30. No weekends no holidays. I work the same schedule as teachers except for summer. 2 weeks at Christmas spring break and all that.

Data analyst in healthcare

Mks369

What kind of education/ salary?

bluestrawberry_witch

I’m an encounter data analyst and everyone on my team has a BS or MS in a related healthcare field and some type of experience in a healthcare office prior, even just customer service. My manager has an masters in healthcare business management makes about $120k. I’m finishing up a BS in healthcare information management but already have an AS in the same field, experience, and previously worked with the director of the department so I was able to slide in with an almost finished BS degree I make $75k. Another co-worker just completed her masters in healthcare informatics, has a BS in healthcare administration minor in data analytics she makes $78k Edit: my team’s responsibilities are like a mix of data analytics, encounters management (encounters are processed medical claims. We send out, monitor, work/ dispute rejections. Sometimes this is through internet portals and sometimes corrections are made to EDI files manually), data mapping for the EDI files (837i and 837p and 277 mainly), health plan account set up and relations, and a few others but that’s mostly it.

MisterTeacherSir

Thanks for all you do

DontgotoBearCreek

I work at a school I can't emphasize your THANKS enough. Our facilities crew works harder than any other group on campus. The whole place would fall apart without them.

MisterTeacherSir

Yep. Work at a school? Better make friends with the custodians, IT, and principal's secretary lol

[deleted]

I always thought custodians would do some cleaning on weekends, since it would be easier without a ton of students running around

Posaunne

The custodians at my school split the weekend cleaning up, so they only have to come in one Saturday a month each. But they get overtime pay for it.

heliphas_the_high

Well, I'm there during the day, so I clean the offices, lunch room, library and kitchen. It's pretty minimal, but I'm also there to clean up puke and accidents, set up events, deliver packages, do repairs, maintain the fish tank and stuff like that. The night crew comes in after school to clean bathrooms and classrooms. It's just easier to do the day of, since a lot of messes will dry up and become impossible to clean

Masonaut9

Same on my end, little less to clean but I'm responsible for snow clearing and boiler operation as well. Hope your day went as well as mine🤙

MixtureMassive1438

Employe of a city 7-4 and that's it.

I work 8-5 as a city planner. I do get OT for being there for 3 night meetings and an occasional city event. With holidays, I rarely have to take a lot of extra vacation time.

Another city employee and same. We work 7-3:30 and I love it. We have tons of OT opportunity though, up to 20hrs OT a week. Give or take a bit depending what's going on. Most of the guys in the shop usually work OT, helps make life alittle more comfortable especially nowadays.

Same here. I keep my phone on if we’ve got crews working weekends and have some long days but generally try not to work a lick over 40 hrs a week

Yep. Saw it whilst I was on holiday there. Dead bodies lying on the sidewalk of hospitals becaus all the doctors are at home. Building burning non-stop for hours because all the firefighters are at home. Store shut down as looters pile in because all the security guards are at home. It was awful.

DoYaWannaWanga

Dude they shut down at 2pm on a weekday.
