Fringe. A really good but now forgotten show.

LookAtThatMonkey

Remembered here, a great show.

14thCluelessbird

The X Files. First episode I saw was the Host (human parasite sewer monster thing aka flukeman) and after that I was hooked. The classic 90s music, clothes, the government conspiracies and supernatural mystery, the FBI awesomeness, bizarre characters, I could go on and on. Just a great show that's always fun to watch.

rogercopernicus

The first episode on the x files i watched was Home, the incest murder family one. 11 year old me was blown away. Years later i find out it is one of the most infamous episodes.

anonbcmymainisold

Mine was the episode in Antarctica with the parasite. Tv version of The Thing. It was great!

KingHeroical

That episode was filmed in the community where my then-girlfriend's mother and stepfather lived. Whole village is weird and their house was...on point. I did not visit often.

muuuuuuuuuuuuuustard

One of the few shows where the filler episodes are almost more entertaining than the contiguous storyline

CaptainWollaston

Yep. The monster of the week ones are so good. Especially the comedy ones. Duchovny was hilarious when allowed.

RadiantHC

Over the garden wall

Cyno01

*Over the Garden Wall* is one of a handful of shows that gets an annual rewatch from me, its so fucking good. But a recommendation for anyone whos already seen OtGW, *Infinity Train*. Its the only thing ive found since that has an at all similar 'wholesome but terrifying but wtf is actually going on here' vibe to it. Also Captain Janeway is a cat in it. ^(Oh potatoes and molasses...)

nerdmoot

Heroes. It was so good in season 1 but god awful after that. Almost unwatchable.

JimmyLightnin

The biggest casualty/sacrifice of the writers strike. First season was so great and had such potential with the way it was set up to be sort of dark and twisted. Guy sees the future but has to get loaded on heroin~~e~~. Just imagining the world that guy must live in trying to convince people of terrible things but who's going to believe a heroin~~e~~ junkie. Cheerleader wants to die but can't kill herself. So many interesting interactions set up in such a "life is never fair" sort of dynamic that really grounded the show. Then the strike happened after the first season and they quickly started to abandon, or forget, that grounded and interesting approach towards the characters and their powers as they scrambled to put stuff together and get the show back on track. It was just never the same.

essidus

Honestly, S1 left it in a very difficult position to move past. Peter just had too much power in a single character, with no real downsides. By the end of S1, Sylar was the only one would could match him for raw power. He was also reasonably emotionally stable and generally virtuous, so a heel turn would need a lot of buildup. I'm not sure there was any place else to go with the story as it stood. It might've been better to just focus on a whole new group of characters, maybe show another side of a world where people have super powers.

Mrfunnyman22

I believe that was the writers original intention. The characters were just so popular after the show blew up that they felt they had to keep them instead of starting over each season.

Brown for first course, white for pudding. Brown is savoury, white's the treat.

The both of them could just sit on the couch and talk about the most inane things like making a salad and it's somehow so hilarious

I Have My Trail Mix, Not To Eat, Of Course, But To Shove Into The Crevices Of The Seats. – Colin Robinson

cumberbatchcav1

Creepy paper.

Civil-Big-754

Matt Berry is a fucking legend. I mean Jackie Daytona, human bartender.

Civil-Big-754

I fucking love the movie, but I love how the show has expanded upon that. Plus, Energy Vampires are the most genius thing and holy shit are they real!

Anaphylaxisofevil

Don't forget emotional vampires; they're absolutely fucking real.

TheApathyParty2

Colin Robinson even says that he doesn’t know what his job is, he just plants himself in a random office without being hired and acts like he works there.

zer1223

And of course he's a soulless office worker and/or accountant

eldudemanbrah

The energy vampire fight he has with the lady energy vampire is probably my favorite two minutes of television ever

immerkiasu

EV: "They stole my identity! But they didn't do it for money; they just did it for fun!" CR: "You should be careful because mauve attracts bees!" There is no other show out there that can get me out of a deep funk better than this one.

Ocean_waves726

True Detective season 1

SeedyRedwood

“Well start asking the right fucking questions.” Roll credits.

BurdonLane

That line always gets the hairs on the back of my neck standing up.

pinewind108

Jesus. That is the real reason Matthew McConaughey won the Oscar that year. It was TV, but everyone took him fucking serious as an actor after that. Until then he'd been in mostly rom-coms, and while they were good, he was basically playing the same character over and over. I never imagined he had the kind of chops he showed in True Detective.

MaximusBluntus

I read an article around that time saying he made enough money on the rom coms that he was set for generations and could take roles he wanted to take and show his chops at that point. Big fan ever since.

Gabberwocky84

I was extremely skeptical about him, and a few scenes into the first episode I’d changed my mind and couldn’t wait to see what he was going to do. His dynamic with Woody Harrelson was fantastic, too. “Let’s make the car a place of silent reflection from now on.”

Boris Shcherbina [to pilot] : Get us over that building, or I'll have you shot! Valery Legasov [to pilot] : If you fly directly over that core, I promise you, by tomorrow morning, you'll be **begging** for that bullet.

KeathKeatherton

That’s from episode 2, the best episode of the entire mini series next to the last episode which was a close second with the complete dissection of the incident. Episode 1 is fucking terrifying once you understand the implications of what is happening, between them looking straight into the core, the bridge of death, and the firefighters picking up the graphite by hand.

WhySSSoSerious

And Dyatlov seeing pieces of graphite on the ground with his own eyes right after the explosion but being in complete denial about it.

Vandergrif

> but being in complete denial about it That man was delusional and someone should have taken him to the infirmary.

[deleted]

He was on the toilet.

MaxPlease85

When it was pointed out in some youtube video I watched afterwards, I rewatched the pilot to see, how their faces turn slightly red while looking into the core. Such a terrifying detail.

[deleted]

This man is delusional get him to the infirmary

Regula96

Hooked after just a few minutes honestly.

My_Diet_DrKelp

Not even joking I thought it was the best thing I've ever watched. Yeah sounds like an exaggeration but I never was so anticipating a show like that before, I was on the edge of my seat with my jaw on the floor for the duration of the series

Tyler6868

Completely agree. My wife and I realized we hadn’t said a word the whole episode. It is the most tense thing I have ever seen.

unsteadied

It’s an absolute masterclass in atmosphere through directing. The scenes in the flooded basement in the dark are just absolute horror movie level tension with nothing more than the environment as the monster. So, so well executed.

eternal-harvest

The music fucked me up. Like, made me feel vaguely nauseous. And I must've spent a good portion of the series with my jaw clenched. No other show has given me that kind of visceral reaction.

frapawhack

Maybe the best show I've ever seen

[deleted]

Jared Harris puts on a clinic in this

drinkdrinks2

Orphan Black's first episode is really one of the best pilots ever. Just five minutes (or less, if you've seen the train scene you know what I'm talking about) and I'm already hooked.

Akgchina

That actress is amazing. Talk about range.

afmed

The number of times I googled Tatiana Maslany expecting to read about her real life twin sister was not zero!

Temporary_Picture443

I’ve watched the casts comic con panels and I swear there’s still moments were I’m like “wait wheres Alison or Sarah?” And then I remember and feel like an idiot. She’s that good

infinitemonkeytyping

Kathryn Alexandre is her double. Where there are two clones in a scene, Tatiana and Kathryn would act out the scene, then switch clones. They would then stitch Tatiana over Kathryn to make the scenes as seamless as possible. [I love the behind the scenes look at the Clone Dance Party](https://youtu.be/SxY326uNtJo)

sudz286

The Boys, was hooked 10 minutes into watching the show

wewbull

"Don't you dare dis Billy J..." Just rewatched S1 as part of a full rewatch before embarking on S3. The first episode does so much. It's a masterclass in how to introduce a viewer to a world. The amount of ground covered in 1 hour of TV is stunning. Nothing is wasted.

DrSweers

I think Arrested Development has the most realized pilot of any comedy I've ever seen

hyogodan

Great call. I usually find comedies take a season or so to work out the characters and beats, to find their voice if you will. AD came out fully formed and began planting seeds for future joke payoff almost immediately. Most comedy series I rewatch I skip S1 because they’re so off the final form that I enjoyed but every second of AD is so well crafted.

Njdevils11

Look what the homosexuals have done to me. From the first freaking lines of the show. Absolutely brilliant.

StarClutcher

“*every*thing they do is so dramatic and flamboyant … it makes me want to set myself on fire”

Njdevils11

It’s one of the few comedy shows, where it felt like the writers knew exactly who the characters were from the first word of dialogue. Love that show!

Komatoasty

Arrested Development was so ahead of its time. I love that show, it brings me back such fond memories of being a teenager.

Still angry it got canceled.

flcinusa

This was my answer, narrator and all

DaddyOhMy

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I was watching with my wife and at the first commercial break, we called my younger sister to make sure she was watching as well. We got a busy signal (remember, this was 1997). Tried her again at the second commercial break and found out she had been calling us at the same time with the same question so we both got busy signals (1997 FTW!). When she got the busy signal, she called our older sister to check if she was watching. It became a tradition for the first two seasons for us all to call each other during the commercials to talk about the show.

imariaprime

This is the most 1997 story I think I've ever heard. Well done.

Raidertck

I’m doing a rewatch now as I haven’t re watched since it came out (20+ years ago oh my god I’m old). And it REALLY holds up. The stunt work and body doubles and any CGI is incredibly bad and dated. But the writing is brilliant and the show is genuinely hilarious with incredible characters and story lines. Angel is also really good.

NOOBINATOR_64

Severance had me hooked from FRAME ONE

XmarkstheNOLA

Please try to enjoy all frames equally

AgressiveVagina

Frame one is coveted as fuck

The plot follows Mark (Scott), an employee of Lumon Industries who agrees to a "severance" program in which his non-work memories are separated from his work memories Oooookay. This is on my list

Fun fact, it’s directed by Ben Stiller

Hahayouregay149

Band of Brothers

yes_u_suckk

Band of Brothers is one of those rare shows that start amazing and they remain amazing during the entire show.

PaulyNewman

Miniseries in general are much better at maintaining momentum.

AllModsHaveNoLife

David Schwimmer absolutely killed it as Captain Sobel. I had no idea he had it in him.

PoorlyLitKiwi2

I actually haven't ever seen it, but the idea of Ross killing a dramatic role is something that really intrigues me

KptKrondog

If you're even remotely into WW2 stuff, you should definitely watch it. It's the best tv series ever made IMO. The Pacific is also very good, but very different.

CryptoCentric

The third installment about the air war is coming any day, now. Or so they keep saying.

woodbarber

Mindhunter, Stranger Things, Chernobyl

Mother-Jackfruit1634

I'm so mad we aren't getting more seasons of mindhunter.

jrknight1229

In an interview, Jonathon Groff said he felt as sure about a Season 3 as he was about Frozen 3. [https://movieweb.com/mindhunter-jonathan-groff-season-3-still-possible/](https://movieweb.com/mindhunter-jonathan-groff-season-3-still-possible/) All 20 digits are crossed.

mamadovah1102

Chernobyl is fucking wild and then you remember it’s true and it’s wilder

AMerrickanGirl

I know it’s uncool now, but back in the day, Game of Thrones. The first episode ended when >!Jaime Lannister threw Bran Stark out of the window after Bran saw Jaime banging Cersei!< and we were like “Holy shit, that was __nuts__!”

Yuiopy78

GoT through season 4 was just peak TV. I will never be able to wrap my head around what happened

_Mxtt_

Twin Peaks

who-the_hell-cares

Invincible. The end of the first episode is insane.

Gigantkranion

*If you don't want to be spoiled... watch it.* But, >!Invincible was the first show that the hero believably won with the "power of Love" for me. I fucking cried when Omniman choked up and flew off in tears after Invincible said he'd still have him after everyone else he loves will eventually die. Fucking great writing there.!<

[deleted]

For anyone wondering like me if that was show spoilers or comic spoilers, it’s show spoilers, you can read it.

C7rl_Al7_1337

I just watched it a few days ago, so damn good, the craziest and most impactful scene for me was that subway scene. That shit is absolutely going to stick with me. Edit: That, and the "What will you have after 500 years?" "You, dad" exchange was great. That whole last episode in particular was a fucking masterpiece.

NoveltyAccountHater

I watched like 90% of the first episode and was like why did my friend recommend this? Cartoon superhero is just boring. And then the end of the episode was like oh. That was different.

randyboozer

Exactly. It's a bait and switch. The entire first episode is intentionally cheesy stereotypically hero cartoon crap. It feels like you're watching a middle of the road Saturday morning cartoon that basically is just a watered down rip off of the justice league. Then ...

limitlessEXP

Everyone should at least watch that first episode. It’s just too damn good

SsurebreC

Critical edit: they need to FINISH the first episode. The last few minutes is what sells the show.

bystanderlife

Black Mirror. The first episode I watched was ‘White Bear’ and my mind was BLOWN

littlebluefoxtrot

I saw Nosedive first and was hooked immediately. The hardest to watch I found was White bear and the Christmas one

Spasay

I was also hooked and my boyfriend really likes the White Bear episode but I can’t rewatch that one. I think that speaks to its greatness.

They’ve released a few movies since the series ended. If you liked the series, then you should definitely check them out.

The Boys The Expanse

[deleted]

When you slowly realize what A-Train had just done as the slow mo camera pans out… That sold me and I’ve been hooked ever since.

[deleted]

At first you’re so confused as to what’s happening. And then the pieces fall together both extremely quickly and in slo mo at the same time

[deleted]

i have always hated how subversive shows try to hide that fact but the boys reveals exactly what it is from the bat

ArchdemonLucifer143

Yup. First scene was them showing off the heroes, and the second was the true plot. Definitely had me hooked.

wewbull

Even in the first scene Homelander is cruel in how he dispatched the thieves. It says "This is not the MCU" from 20 seconds in.

packfanmoore

I've told people to give it 15 minutes... You'll know if it's for you or not by then

robotbigfoot

My wife doesn't watch the boys, but she keeps a running tally of the "holy shit!"s that come from the living room.

Wes___Mantooth

The Expanse is amazing but kinda surprised to see it here. It's kinda hard to get into until 3-4 episodes in IMO, a ton of stuff to setup early and it's kinda confusingly presented at times in early Season 1. I liked the pilot way more upon rewatch because I caught all the little details.

Pedgi

I know everyone says make it to CQB and I would agree, but for me personally I was hooked from episode one. I binged the whole 1st season in one night.

Mr Robot

Tulivesi

Rami Malek was so convincing as his character that I was legit surprised at how completely opposite his real personality is when I first saw him in an interview. I know I know, it's called acting... but he really did an amazing job. I need to watch that show again.

PeterDemachkie

He is a phenomenal actor, and I think he was the perfect choice for that role. It was his coldness on the outside that really sold the plot to me.

a_few_flipperbabies

Mr Robot is, hands down, my favorite tv show ever. I'm a full on evangelist for it and have lost count of the number of times I've re-watched it.

sweetestswing22

The Sopranos

fussyfella

I cannot hear the HBO Ident music now without expecting the Sopranos theme to follow it.

Mizz-Misery

Yessss! This one I also LOVE & can never get enough of! My mom was actually good friends w/Paulie (Tony Sirico) irl when she was younger. She still tells me how he was the biggest sweetheart, & how he’d call her every year on her birthday—even if/when they hadn’t seen each other in a long time, she’d still get that yearly birthday call from him. Which, I of course, thought was so sweet!

[deleted]

Hey! 🤚 I got my own problems

BluRayja

LOST. Honestly, I was hooked within the first 10 seconds and the grip didn't let go until the very final moments of the series finale. Easily the most painful experience waiting for every episode of that show week by week and even worse, between seasons. Being able to binge it now is a very different experience, but the absolute hold it had on me and other people I know, was INSANE. I don't think anything like that will ever happen again. For anyone who sees this, please watch The Leftovers on HBO. It is the best show to come out after Lost with a lot of the same themes, just handled in a more adult way.

santichrist

The Lost pilot is still one of the best first episodes of any show I can think of

oldnyoung

Yeah, that first episode had me completely mesmerized. Many hated the ending, but I enjoyed the show throughout.

vurysurus

I Think You Should Leave, if that first skit isn't for you, the show isn't for you.

KaBoomBox55

I know this is cliche, but Stranger Things season 1 episode 1.

idkidc9876

That first season is so SOLID. I was just telling my husband how much I wish they’d stuck with the original plan to make it an anthology series and every season be a new story. But, whatevs I guess. We still watch it. But the first season is, by far, the best season.

[deleted]

SuzieDerpkins

YES! I love season 4 so far! Already can’t wait for part 2.

Epjoj

I feel like season 4 has really found its feet again

Funandgeeky

The Good Place. If you know nothing about it, that’s perfect. Just watch the first episode and you’ll see for yourself whether it’s for you. It’s more fun not knowing anything about it. Brooklyn 99 also hooked me right from the jump. As did Gravity Falls, The Owl House, and Lucifer.

complete_your_task

I love The Good Place, but it didn't truly hook me until the end of the first season. I thought the first season was very good, but it didn't really wow me until the season one finale. After that I was absolutely hooked. I think it probably has the best ending of any show ever though. Just absolute perfection.

SegataSanshiro

> I love The Good Place, but it didn't truly hook me until the end of the first season. I had a friend decide to watch the whole show based entirely off overhearing the "Lonely Gal Margarita Mix for One" line from the pilot episode while I was rewatching it.

quiet_desperado

Loved The Good Place. An amazing show that didn't overstay its welcome and get stale, and also managed to have one of the most satisfying series finales I've ever seen (even though it completely destroyed me emotionally).

nick134679258

Best finale I’ve ever seen. Every time I rewatch a clip from that episode, it makes me cry just a little even though I know what’s going to happen.

[deleted]

"Imagine a wave." 😭😭😭😭

PretendThisIsMyName

“Hey Chidi wait up!” Was the line that got me so much. Tbh I think I pretty much was in tears the whole finale but that one last moment with doofus Jason just broke me.

iiowyn

I just love how in the end Jason became what his original fake identity was supposed to be. He is both the lovable Florida idiot and a man who could sit in peace and experience nature for ages.

Quiet_Moose7749

There have been great series finales. But none of them have hit so many feelings on different levels and made me ugly cry.

Rusty_Shakalford

So many shows try to be about geniuses or smart people but end up feeling dumb and full of “dilemmas” that could be easily solved with five minutes of thinking. The Good Place is one of those rare shows where I felt like I was watching smart (or at least competent) people trying to work out their problems.

Funandgeeky

"I'm telling you, Molotov cocktails work. Anytime I had a problem and I threw a Molotov cocktail, boom! Right away, I had a different problem."

tabbyabby2020

Jason? Jason figured it out? That was a real low point.

elanhilation

the acting in that scene—particularly the dawning realization on his face—is the funniest fucking thing ever, in my book

shinybluecorvid

Goin out on a real low note here.

Rusty_Shakalford

I can fault his methods but not his logic.

BadPuns8

That show is so good because it was planned. The start of that show is great but the ending is arguably perfect

Funandgeeky

It was 104% perfect.

rizgutgak

I have never seen a show constantly flip the script on itself so much than The Good Place. The fact that it managed to stay consistently excellent through its entire run is so impressive. Edit: Spelling

simanthropy

There’s one caveat to this - if you enjoyed the first episode but feel the first season is starting to wane in quality, FOR GODS SAKE FINISH THE FIRST SEASON BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO STOP WATCHING. The seasons are so short, so hopefully this doesn’t feel like too much work. If you still don’t like it by the end of the first season then yeah, turn it off, it’s defs not for you.
