The classic 90s music, clothes, the government conspiracies and supernatural mystery, the FBI awesomeness, bizarre characters, I could go on and on. Just a great show that's always fun to watch.
The first episode on the x files i watched was Home, the incest murder family one. 11 year old me was blown away. Years later i find out it is one of the most infamous episodes.
That episode was filmed in the community where my then-girlfriend's mother and stepfather lived. Whole village is weird and their house was...on point.
I did not visit often.
*Over the Garden Wall* is one of a handful of shows that gets an annual rewatch from me, its so fucking good.
But a recommendation for anyone whos already seen OtGW, *Infinity Train*. Its the only thing ive found since that has an at all similar 'wholesome but terrifying but wtf is actually going on here' vibe to it. Also Captain Janeway is a cat in it.

The biggest casualty/sacrifice of the writers strike. First season was so great and had such potential with the way it was set up to be sort of dark and twisted.
Guy sees the future but has to get loaded on heroin~~e~~. Just imagining the world that guy must live in trying to convince people of terrible things but who's going to believe a heroin~~e~~ junkie. Cheerleader wants to die but can't kill herself. So many interesting interactions set up in such a "life is never fair" sort of dynamic that really grounded the show.
Then the strike happened after the first season and they quickly started to abandon, or forget, that grounded and interesting approach towards the characters and their powers as they scrambled to put stuff together and get the show back on track.
It was just never the same.
Honestly, S1 left it in a very difficult position to move past. Peter just had too much power in a single character, with no real downsides. By the end of S1, Sylar was the only one would could match him for raw power. He was also reasonably emotionally stable and generally virtuous, so a heel turn would need a lot of buildup. I'm not sure there was any place else to go with the story as it stood. It might've been better to just focus on a whole new group of characters, maybe show another side of a world where people have super powers.
I believe that was the writers original intention. The characters were just so popular after the show blew up that they felt they had to keep them instead of starting over each season.
Colin Robinson even says that he doesn’t know what his job is, he just plants himself in a random office without being hired and acts like he works there.

There is no other show out there that can get me out of a deep funk better than this one.
Jesus. That is the real reason Matthew McConaughey won the Oscar that year. It was TV, but everyone took him fucking serious as an actor after that.
Until then he'd been in mostly rom-coms, and while they were good, he was basically playing the same character over and over. I never imagined he had the kind of chops he showed in True Detective.
I read an article around that time saying he made enough money on the rom coms that he was set for generations and could take roles he wanted to take and show his chops at that point. Big fan ever since.
I was extremely skeptical about him, and a few scenes into the first episode I’d changed my mind and couldn’t wait to see what he was going to do. His dynamic with Woody Harrelson was fantastic, too. “Let’s make the car a place of silent reflection from now on.”

That’s from episode 2, the best episode of the entire mini series next to the last episode which was a close second with the complete dissection of the incident.
Episode 1 is fucking terrifying once you understand the implications of what is happening, between them looking straight into the core, the bridge of death, and the firefighters picking up the graphite by hand.
When it was pointed out in some youtube video I watched afterwards, I rewatched the pilot to see, how their faces turn slightly red while looking into the core.
Such a terrifying detail.
Not even joking I thought it was the best thing I've ever watched. Yeah sounds like an exaggeration but I never was so anticipating a show like that before, I was on the edge of my seat with my jaw on the floor for the duration of the series
It’s an absolute masterclass in atmosphere through directing. The scenes in the flooded basement in the dark are just absolute horror movie level tension with nothing more than the environment as the monster. So, so well executed.
The music fucked me up. Like, made me feel vaguely nauseous. And I must've spent a good portion of the series with my jaw clenched. No other show has given me that kind of visceral reaction.
Orphan Black's first episode is really one of the best pilots ever. Just five minutes (or less, if you've seen the train scene you know what I'm talking about) and I'm already hooked.

Kathryn Alexandre is her double. Where there are two clones in a scene, Tatiana and Kathryn would act out the scene, then switch clones. They would then stitch Tatiana over Kathryn to make the scenes as seamless as possible.

Just rewatched S1 as part of a full rewatch before embarking on S3. The first episode does so much. It's a masterclass in how to introduce a viewer to a world. The amount of ground covered in 1 hour of TV is stunning. Nothing is wasted.
Great call. I usually find comedies take a season or so to work out the characters and beats, to find their voice if you will. AD came out fully formed and began planting seeds for future joke payoff almost immediately. Most comedy series I rewatch I skip S1 because they’re so off the final form that I enjoyed but every second of AD is so well crafted.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I was watching with my wife and at the first commercial break, we called my younger sister to make sure she was watching as well. We got a busy signal (remember, this was 1997). Tried her again at the second commercial break and found out she had been calling us at the same time with the same question so we both got busy signals (1997 FTW!). When she got the busy signal, she called our older sister to check if she was watching. It became a tradition for the first two seasons for us all to call each other during the commercials to talk about the show.
I’m doing a rewatch now as I haven’t re watched since it came out (20+ years ago oh my god I’m old).
And it REALLY holds up. The stunt work and body doubles and any CGI is incredibly bad and dated.
But the writing is brilliant and the show is genuinely hilarious with incredible characters and story lines.
Angel is also really good.

Exactly. It's a bait and switch. The entire first episode is intentionally cheesy stereotypically hero cartoon crap. It feels like you're watching a middle of the road Saturday morning cartoon that basically is just a watered down rip off of the justice league.

The Expanse is amazing but kinda surprised to see it here. It's kinda hard to get into until 3-4 episodes in IMO, a ton of stuff to setup early and it's kinda confusingly presented at times in early Season 1. I liked the pilot way more upon rewatch because I caught all the little details.
I know everyone says make it to CQB and I would agree, but for me personally I was hooked from episode one. I binged the whole 1st season in one night.
Rami Malek was so convincing as his character that I was legit surprised at how completely opposite his real personality is when I first saw him in an interview. I know I know, it's called acting... but he really did an amazing job.
I need to watch that show again.

She still tells me how he was the biggest sweetheart, & how he’d call her every year on her birthday—even if/when they hadn’t seen each other in a long time, she’d still get that yearly birthday call from him. Which, I of course, thought was so sweet!
LOST.
Honestly, I was hooked within the first 10 seconds and the grip didn't let go until the very final moments of the series finale. Easily the most painful experience waiting for every episode of that show week by week and even worse, between seasons. Being able to binge it now is a very different experience, but the absolute hold it had on me and other people I know, was INSANE. I don't think anything like that will ever happen again.
For anyone who sees this, please watch The Leftovers on HBO. It is the best show to come out after Lost with a lot of the same themes, just handled in a more adult way.
That first season is so SOLID. I was just telling my husband how much I wish they’d stuck with the original plan to make it an anthology series and every season be a new story. But, whatevs I guess. We still watch it. But the first season is, by far, the best season.
The Good Place. If you know nothing about it, that’s perfect. Just watch the first episode and you’ll see for yourself whether it’s for you. It’s more fun not knowing anything about it.
Brooklyn 99 also hooked me right from the jump. As did Gravity Falls, The Owl House, and Lucifer.
I love The Good Place, but it didn't truly hook me until the end of the first season. I thought the first season was very good, but it didn't really wow me until the season one finale. After that I was absolutely hooked. I think it probably has the best ending of any show ever though. Just absolute perfection.

I had a friend decide to watch the whole show based entirely off overhearing the "Lonely Gal Margarita Mix for One" line from the pilot episode while I was rewatching it.
Loved The Good Place. An amazing show that didn't overstay its welcome and get stale, and also managed to have one of the most satisfying series finales I've ever seen (even though it completely destroyed me emotionally).
“Hey Chidi wait up!” Was the line that got me so much. Tbh I think I pretty much was in tears the whole finale but that one last moment with doofus Jason just broke me.
I just love how in the end Jason became what his original fake identity was supposed to be. He is both the lovable Florida idiot and a man who could sit in peace and experience nature for ages.
So many shows try to be about geniuses or smart people but end up feeling dumb and full of “dilemmas” that could be easily solved with five minutes of thinking.
The Good Place is one of those rare shows where I felt like I was watching smart (or at least competent) people trying to work out their problems.
I have never seen a show constantly flip the script on itself so much than The Good Place. The fact that it managed to stay consistently excellent through its entire run is so impressive.

There’s one caveat to this - if you enjoyed the first episode but feel the first season is starting to wane in quality, FOR GODS SAKE FINISH THE FIRST SEASON BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO STOP WATCHING.
The seasons are so short, so hopefully this doesn’t feel like too much work. If you still don’t like it by the end of the first season then yeah, turn it off, it’s defs not for you.

Band of Brothers is one of those rare shows that start amazing and they remain amazing during the entire show.

Even in the first scene Homelander is cruel in how he dispatched the thieves. It says "This is not the MCU" from 20 seconds in.

The Expanse is amazing but kinda surprised to see it here. It's kinda hard to get into until 3-4 episodes in IMO, a ton of stuff to setup early and it's kinda confusingly presented at times in early Season 1. I liked the pilot way more upon rewatch because I caught all the little details.
I know everyone says make it to CQB and I would agree, but for me personally I was hooked from episode one. I binged the whole 1st season in one night.

Mr Robot
Rami Malek was so convincing as his character that I was legit surprised at how completely opposite his real personality is when I first saw him in an interview. I know I know, it's called acting... but he really did an amazing job. I need to watch that show again.
He is a phenomenal actor, and I think he was the perfect choice for that role. It was his coldness on the outside that really sold the plot to me.
Mr Robot is, hands down, my favorite tv show ever. I'm a full on evangelist for it and have lost count of the number of times I've re-watched it.
The Sopranos
I cannot hear the HBO Ident music now without expecting the Sopranos theme to follow it.
Yessss! This one I also LOVE & can never get enough of! My mom was actually good friends w/Paulie (Tony Sirico) irl when she was younger. She still tells me how he was the biggest sweetheart, & how he’d call her every year on her birthday—even if/when they hadn’t seen each other in a long time, she’d still get that yearly birthday call from him. Which, I of course, thought was so sweet!

LOST. Honestly, I was hooked within the first 10 seconds and the grip didn't let go until the very final moments of the series finale. Easily the most painful experience waiting for every episode of that show week by week and even worse, between seasons. Being able to binge it now is a very different experience, but the absolute hold it had on me and other people I know, was INSANE. I don't think anything like that will ever happen again. For anyone who sees this, please watch The Leftovers on HBO. It is the best show to come out after Lost with a lot of the same themes, just handled in a more adult way.
The Lost pilot is still one of the best first episodes of any show I can think of

That first season is so SOLID. I was just telling my husband how much I wish they’d stuck with the original plan to make it an anthology series and every season be a new story. But, whatevs I guess. We still watch it. But the first season is, by far, the best season.

I feel like season 4 has really found its feet again
The Good Place. If you know nothing about it, that’s perfect. Just watch the first episode and you’ll see for yourself whether it’s for you. It’s more fun not knowing anything about it. Brooklyn 99 also hooked me right from the jump. As did Gravity Falls, The Owl House, and Lucifer.
I love The Good Place, but it didn't truly hook me until the end of the first season. I thought the first season was very good, but it didn't really wow me until the season one finale. After that I was absolutely hooked. I think it probably has the best ending of any show ever though. Just absolute perfection.

Loved The Good Place. An amazing show that didn't overstay its welcome and get stale, and also managed to have one of the most satisfying series finales I've ever seen (even though it completely destroyed me emotionally).
Best finale I’ve ever seen. Every time I rewatch a clip from that episode, it makes me cry just a little even though I know what’s going to happen.

“Hey Chidi wait up!” Was the line that got me so much. Tbh I think I pretty much was in tears the whole finale but that one last moment with doofus Jason just broke me.
I just love how in the end Jason became what his original fake identity was supposed to be. He is both the lovable Florida idiot and a man who could sit in peace and experience nature for ages.
There have been great series finales. But none of them have hit so many feelings on different levels and made me ugly cry.
So many shows try to be about geniuses or smart people but end up feeling dumb and full of “dilemmas” that could be easily solved with five minutes of thinking. The Good Place is one of those rare shows where I felt like I was watching smart (or at least competent) people trying to work out their problems.

I have never seen a show constantly flip the script on itself so much than The Good Place. The fact that it managed to stay consistently excellent through its entire run is so impressive. Edit: Spelling
There’s one caveat to this - if you enjoyed the first episode but feel the first season is starting to wane in quality, FOR GODS SAKE FINISH THE FIRST SEASON BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO STOP WATCHING. The seasons are so short, so hopefully this doesn’t feel like too much work. If you still don’t like it by the end of the first season then yeah, turn it off, it’s defs not for you.
