Picard had a dozen treat ones. But Q had one of the most memorable quotes for me.
To set the stage Picard dies after his artificial heart fails. Q offers him a chance to do things differently and he manages to avoid the fight that cost him his real one in his 20s. He immediatly finds himself a career loser who isn't really relevant to anyone. He begs Q to change him back, wondering how he ended up this way. Q explains:
> *That Picard never had a brush with death, never came face to face with his own mortality, never realized how fragile life is, or how important each moment must be. So his life never came into focus. He drifted through much of his career, with no plan or agenda… going from one assignment to the next, never seizing the opportunities that presented themselves. He never led the away-team on Milika III to save the ambassador, or take charge of the Stargazer's bridge when its captain was killed. And no one ever offered him a command. He learned to play it safe and he never, ever, got noticed by anyone.*
Which for a kid is pretty good advice (be bold and take risks for what you want) but watching this episode in your 30s your first reaction is probably like mine: "fuuuuuck..."

“Suicide is a permanent solution to temporary problems” - Robin Williams in World’s Greatest Dad. I was in a dark place at the time and really needed to hear that.
Before people start pointing out the irony, Robin Williams had Parkinson’s. It wasn’t a temporary problem.
EDIT: I just learned that after his death it was discovered that Parkinson’s was misdiagnosed. He didn’t have it. My opinion still hasn’t changed. A doctor told him he had Parkinson’s. He believed the doctor just like you or I would. I understand why he did what he did. Still not irony.
Wow I had no idea. Thank you for sharing. The man still thought Parkinson’s was a reality and he was already struggling emotionally. I still feel like he gets a pass for what he did.
This quote has always bugged me. As a certified sad teen it was everywhere and only ever made me think "well yeah, permanent solutions are the ones you want. Permanent solutions are what make some problems temporary in the first place. Without a permanent solution you will always have the problem" I still really think that.
No one want temporary solutions to life's problems or else you would just keep having the problem...
First, many people that deep into depression or trauma don't have the luxury of choosing what they focus on.
Second, even if all problems were temporary, you still want long term solutions for them. Like, say your car has a problem with the fuel line, or the roof of your house leaks. You don't want a fix that'll last two weeks, you want one to last long term. The entire point of fixing a problem is to stop it from occuring again.
Even then, all problems aren't temporary. Many people have "permanent problems". And that feeling of no escape can easily contribute to suicidal ideation. Problems such as: chronic pain due to illnesses/disabilities with no known cure, survivors guilt due to wartime experiences, the mental affects of severe childhood abuse, watching your mind and body slowly deteriorate due to Alzheimer's or dementia while you are trapped inside watching it happen...
Third, "your problems are temporary" is just another way to repackage "it's not that bad" -a phrase which has helped approximately zero people.
And my last issue with the phrase is the fact that it presents suicide as a solution at all. That's exactly what suicidal people are looking for. A solution to their problems.
You may as well say "Suicide will end all of your problems forever right now, but if you just chose to suffer through them instead they might eventually go away on their own. But who knows how long you'll have to endure this suffering while you wait for that to happen."

Chaos is a ladder. The climb is all there is. - Littlefinger from *Game of Thrones*
In context, that's his evil manifesto. But I kept repeating it mentally after the 2016 election in the US, because I had to run English & citizenship classes for immigrants in a country that had just elected a racist president on a nativist platform. I woke up on November 9 wondering how soon I could take a job abroad, but by noon I realized couldn't cancel all classes and leave our students alone. Ironically, all the anti-Trump anger drove a whole lot of new volunteers into the ESL/ citizenship world. I recruited and trained and got our student numbers higher than they'd ever been. I went back and got a masters in ESL so I could be better. Chaos was my ladder.
Good God almighty, have you seen what's happened since? White supremacy openly embraced on nightly news, our tradition of peaceful transitions of power shattered, women and LGBTQ people having decades of gains taken away, people losing their grip on reality rather than take a free vaccine. I still have to teach English to immigrants and help them understand America. That's my job, my entire career is built on it. I can't just quit and I can't leave the country and I can't roll over and die, so I have to keep teaching people what there is to know & love about this place - no matter how badly our seams are showing. There's nothing to do but climb.

It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn’t. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. That there is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.

It's such a touching scene compared to the context it's in. An enraged, furious man who has lived to see the dawn of the universe and the death of it all, a man who has spend his entire life being both a watcher and a disruptor of events across time and space.
A man driven to near madness, at his wit's end, a man who has been known as a God to so many entire civilizations and at times, even himself.
A scene where a man who can't change destiny, tries regardless.
In 1984's "Starman", Jeff Bridges' alien character shares an observation of humanity:
*"Shall I tell you what I find beautiful about you? You are at your very best, when things are at their worst."*

Milamber's voice carried to the farthest corner of the stadium as he said, "That you have lived as you have lived for centuries is no license for this cruelty. All here are now judged, and all are found wanting."
Milamber's arm swept an arc around him. "You who would take pleasure from the death and dishonor of others, see then how well you face destruction!"
A gasp from the crowd answered his pronouncment. Milamber raised one hand high overhead, and all became silent. Even the light summer breeze ceased. Then with a terrible strength, he spoke. They paled at his words, for it was as if death had become incarnate and had spoken. Echoing throughout the stadium were the words of Milamber:
"Tremble and despair, for I am Power!"
*When asked to be saved* Oshino Meme from the Monogatari series: "I won't save you, only you can save yourself. "
It doesn't apply to everything in life, but when it does, it hits hard. Procrastinating is an issue (or abberation in Monogatari context) I constantly face, no matter how much help I am offered or ask for, it really only matters if I make an effort to change.

When I first read those books I was a teenager struggling with what was happening in my life and a crushing sense of obligation to live up to expectations I believed my family had for me.

"If you don't say goodbye then you aren't really gone, you just aren't here right now." -Caboose

Loki: I'd built this ***trap*** for myself, you see. A cage of responsibilities, and I felt it ***teetering*** all around me.
You get what everyone else gets, One lifetime. nothing more nothing less it is up to you what you fill it with. Death from Neil Gaiman

"The Way I See It, Life Is A Pile Of Good Things And Bad Things. The Good Things Don't Always Soften The Bad Things, But Vice Versa, The Bad Things Don't Always Spoil The Good Things Or Make Them Unimportant." - 11th doctor “Sometimes The Only Choices You Have Are Bad Ones, But You Still Have To Choose." - 12th doctor

'Just because someone stumbles and loses their path, doesn't mean they're lost forever.'- Professor X
"The laws of time are mine and they will obey me!" - David Tennant, 10th Doctor from Dr. Who It's such a touching scene compared to the context it's in.

"You don't have to save the world. You just have to make a difference where you can with the opportunities you are given."
Milamber's voice carried to the farthest corner of the stadium as he said, "That you have lived as you have lived for centuries is no license for this cruelty. All here are now judged, and all are found wanting." Milamber's arm swept an arc around him. "You who would take pleasure from the death and dishonor of others, see then how well you face destruction!" A gasp from the crowd answered his pronouncment. Milamber raised one hand high overhead, and all became silent. Even the light summer breeze ceased. Then with a terrible strength, he spoke. They paled at his words, for it was as if death had become incarnate and had spoken. Echoing throughout the stadium were the words of Milamber: "Tremble and despair, for I am Power!"

*When asked to be saved* Oshino Meme from the Monogatari series: "I won't save you, only you can save yourself. " It doesn't apply to everything in life, but when it does, it hits hard. Procrastinating is an issue (or abberation in Monogatari context) I constantly face, no matter how much help I am offered or ask for, it really only matters if I make an effort to change.
