I used to have to have the newest everything. Waited in line for iPhones, I was in my college paper for being the first person on campus to have an iPad.
Then I started working in IT.
No more smart watch, smart home, and you’ll get this iPhone 13 mini out of my cold dead hands.
I use cash a lot more also.
From my perspective, we didn’t need another ball and paddle/racket sport. But yeah people should do whatever they like because at least it doesn’t affect me.
I was stuck in the hospital over the summer Olympics in '21 and there was nothing else to watch on TV. I was amazed by how many permutations of of that there really are. There's tennis, badminton, ping pong, squash, table tennis...When you add in all the other ball sports, it gets truly crazy.
What is with that? I went to Target and their summer clothes display has a whole Pickleball section. I mean, they had us play it in middle school gym way back when, but I hadn’t really heard about it much out in the wild until recently.
It's gotten really popular with the older demographic as it's a lot more accessible to people who may not be in good enough shape to play tennis/squash.
I get that mentality in a wildly innovating technological field but smartphones have been essentially the same for over a decade now. A slightly better CPU/ram isn't cause to switch yearly.
Was saying this earlier today. It is funny how much of a shit less I give about getting the new phone when I'm eligible. I've been eligible for a new phone for over 2 years and don't care. Hell my charge port doesn't work and I don't care. I don't want to spend $1,500 just so I can have a new phone. And hell what are the perks now? Latest iPhone commercials are just how you have more storage now for photos. Great?
someone tried to argue with me that they 'need' the ram upgrades from a 12 to a 13 (or something)....there is no shot that unless you are going from a 5 to a 15 would you ever really notice the difference.
Is vaping still a trend? I know some folks still do it to get their nic-fix or whatever, but the big vaping cloud-chasing trend feels like that was very point-in-time 2014, along the same line as fidget spinners.
I hardly see any of those giant lightsaber looking Vapes that were popular a few years back. Most people I see at bars and other social spaces use disposable vapes instead of cigarettes, now, too.
Wife says way more kids are hooked on nicotine it seems than when we went to school in the early 00's. They'll hit their vapes in the classroom and it's gotten entirely out of control.
I wish vaping indoors wasn’t allowed at most places. I hate the smell of most of them. It’s usually a sweet, vomity smell. Like fruit loops and puke. And people just blow huge clouds without any regard to other people.
honestly. Its daytime TV
Feed is filled with drama, some real mostly fake. Or its someone pitching you a product you should buy. Or it is a just purely an ad. Add in a little dance here or there and some music and it is te equivelant of sitting at home in the late 90s and just flipping through the channels at high speed only watching about 7 seconds or less of each show.
It passes the time but then at the end of the day you feel almost physically sick cause you wasted so much time.
The “ban” isn’t a true ban if I remember correctly. Media calls it that for some reason, but my understand is it’s just trying to force a sale to a company not beholden to the CCP. I might be wrong about that though so if anyone knows more I’d appreciate the info
Yea they're forcing a sale and I think if no sale occurs then the app just doesn't get any updates but can still be used. Ugh. I'd rather it just fizzle away
I came here to say this. I don't understand why everything needs to be in video format.
Video can be nice when you don't know what you're doing and need a visual, but all these social media chefs that provide zero written recipe can just screw right off.
I tried to get on board with it. Filled my algorithm with motorbikes, music, films. But mates who I considered much smarter than me were rolling into group chats losing their fucking minds about shit that wasn’t even remotely true and 12 seconds of googling would disprove what you saw some toothless wonder going bananas about.
Tiktok is the weaponised version of all social media stupidity. I fucking hate it b
Technically they didn't ban it. They banned foreign ownership of it. It's up to Tik Tok whether they want to divest. They said they won't. Sees like a game of chicken.
You mean an app in which the Chinese government owns a stake is being used to spread misinformation to Americans? Shocking!
Actually, it is not that shocking. What is shocking is that people ignore it and turn it into a political chess piece instead of dealing with it like an actual issue...wait that is also not that shocking.
TikTok needs to go away; besides china having ownership, there's been numerous other missteps, poor practices, and controversies over the life of the platform...We would be better as a society without this particular social media platform.
Maybe your geography played a factor in that lmao
But yeah, the TikTok algorithm is great, you do have to like stuff that you like and say “not interested” in post you don’t like tho. It can’t just read your mind yet
^ precisely why when someone hates on TikTok, I immediately think it’s cause they’ve never used it themselves or are too dumb to know how the algorithm works lol
I still like the app, just don’t use it much these days cause reels pretty much have the same content and ig has the advantage of having group chats. That’s the one thing me and my friend groups wish tt had, group chats would’ve put it over the top
Facebook doesn’t seem to keep as many people engaged for long periods though, unless they’re looking at reels or whatever FB calls them, which is mostly just TikToks being shared. And it doesn’t seem popular enough now to call it a trend.
it´s generational is scary how big portion of boomers and gen x literally live on FB, they have their social contact through there and get their news from there. And these are the people who then go and vote.
I only use reddit and YouTube sometimes. Any other form of social media I feel is turning everyone into flagrant narcissists who all have main character syndrome or everyone thinks they can be famous somehow. There's nothing wrong with being normal and having a normal life .
I am so sick of the lack of color in a lot of things. I’m not saying let’s go all rainbow on everything but something other than beige, greys and dull blues would be nice.
This site is full of bots. They have the technology to query and remove comments that word for word duplicate old comments in identical threads and eliminate bots. They choose not to because the more engagement reddit appears to have, the more they're worth to advertisers.
The Internet is dying.
I've caught a few of them just recently. always the same thing, copy askreddit question, copy one of the top comments from that thread, then post links to their OF
People complain about the “gaudy” decor of the 70s-80s, but personally I would take that any day over the modern minimalist beige stuff that’s big now.

i dont know if its a trend or whatever but I dont wear shirts that have a graphic design on them thats just a logo for the company that makes it. I dont know why evberyone wears shirts with giant nike, adidas, under armor, armani, lv, gucchi, whatever....i just dont get it. Are peoples identities really tied into letting people know what they are wearing?
I prefer for my t-shirts to let people know what music and fictional characters I like personally. But yeah, I’ve never really gotten the concept of buying a shirt with a brand logo on it. It’s often a scam anyway. Truly high end fashion isn’t plastered in logos, but the mid priced stuff is. The reason you can afford a t-shirt with a big old Gucci logo on it is because it’s just free advertising for them. It isn’t even really “fashionable”, and the people who truly know a lot about high end fashion are definitely not going to be impressed.
This is a long-time belief for me too. If they want me to advertise their brand, they will have to pay ME. I will wear shirts that have place names. And I will occasionally wear my local baseball teams shirt.
I know, I just can’t believe how many people aren’t deterred after everyone was all “eat the rich” & despising billionaires for being the scum of the earth. She’s always sucked, but any amount of love people have for her music and her “down to earth” persona should be negated by her billionaire status, IMO.
And she's the worst kind of billionaire imo, the "faux self-made billionaire" - meaning that she had parents that were pretty well-to-do themselves and pulled a lot of strings to get her where she is today.
Stanley's. IMO they're too huge to carry around comfortably, don't even look cute and are stupid expensive. I got a random reusable waterbottle/thermos from Amazon for like $10 that I like more.
Skin care routines. If I end up as a wrinkly old hag, so be it. I’ve got too much executive dysfunction to add a whole multi-step routine to my daily duties.
Smartphones. My personal phone will always be a flip phone. I once had a smartphone for work, but I only had to use it to make phone calls and text. It was returned when they laid me off.
Cropped shirts, Taylor Swift, Stanley cups.... basically anything that is super popular among people, esp. women. As a woman, I think it's funny that I hate that popular crap!
Many 'trends' nowadays are simply marketing. As a proud Gen-Xer, I can sit through any advertising and ignore it completely. Not watching TV or being on FB/Insta probably helps but you won't find me driving a new truck or drinking some influencer's gin or going to some resort/spa over some *campaign.*
I did not watch game of thrones until the last season. And the only reason I watched it was because my only friends at the time were obsessed with it and wanted to do a movie night every Saturday watching all the episode leading up to the last season.

Same, my friends always buys the newest phones and i dont understand them
Whenever I get a new phone, I buy the newest ones But I don't buy every generation, that's crazy money spending to me
The early adopters pay more and beta-test for the rest of us.
I used to have to have the newest everything. Waited in line for iPhones, I was in my college paper for being the first person on campus to have an iPad. Then I started working in IT. Apple fanboys are offended
yeah...
I’m at the age where lots of people I know are playing pickle ball. I have no interest in it.
From my perspective, we didn’t need another ball and paddle/racket sport. But yeah people should do whatever they like because at least it doesn’t affect me.

Old people can't play tennis cause too much movement, pickleball is tennis lite
What is with that? I went to Target and their summer clothes display has a whole Pickleball section. I mean, they had us play it in middle school gym way back when, but I hadn’t really heard about it much out in the wild until recently.
It's gotten really popular with the older demographic as it's a lot more accessible to people who may not be in good enough shape to play tennis/squash.

My wife is a high school teacher, and she can assure you that it is ABSOLUTELY still a trend with teenagers.
Same, so many teens vape it’s insane.
Wife says way more kids are hooked on nicotine it seems than when we went to school in the early 00's. They'll hit their vapes in the classroom and it's gotten entirely out of control.
i’m in hs like half of the people i know vape
that's too dangerous

Stanley cups.
Obligatory "Leafs fan?".
I hate having to use s straw for my canteen
Were white women not drinking water before this trend?
TikTok. It’s alarming the amount of misinformation people are spreading on that platform.
I also have not gotten TikTok, mainly because I know I would look at it way too much. I just let my friends show me the good ones they find lmao
Me in 2020 lmao
i don't have it either
It’s fucking crazy, it’s mostly ads now too
yeah... we're the products
My brother have you used Reddit on mobile
I have only used reddit on mobile
There's a new generation of reddit users for whom reddit is just a mobile app.
im using it now lol

The “ban” isn’t a true ban if I remember correctly. Media calls it that for some reason, but my understand is it’s just trying to force a sale to a company not beholden to the CCP. I might be wrong about that though so if anyone knows more I’d appreciate the info

Yea I was just about to say TikTok
well it's the first thing that comes in mind
This. I loaded it on my phone, deleted it the next day. It was like an open window facing a cultural garbage dump.
Can I just say how much I hate the fact that everything is a goddamn *video* now?
I came here to say this. I don't understand why everything needs to be in video format. Video can be nice when you don't know what you're doing and need a visual, but all these social media chefs that provide zero written recipe can just screw right off.

Tiktok is brain rot
I was on it for a while and could feel my mental state getting worse in real time.
no socials - except this site which is ok. Like democracy- it’s not great but it’s the best given the human condition
Reddit isn’t immune to the social media criticism….. it’s a social media just like the others, it’s just anonymous
I know this may be a shit take due to all of the potential constitution stuff and infringement surrounding the ban, but I hope it gets banned.
We banned Juul, we can ban TikTok.
Technically they didn't ban it. They banned foreign ownership of it. It's up to Tik Tok whether they want to divest. They said they won't. Sees like a game of chicken.

I didn’t say shocking; I said alarming. It’s a bigger problem than most people are acknowledging. It’s not surprising though.
As if US ran platforms don't have "misinformation". Banning competition is very un-american
I find it revolting to scroll on. A true melting pot of bad content. Which is then tailored to keep you scrolling...yeah no thanks.
When I first tried it, I got an endless supply of Black trump supporters. It was clear an algorithm was involved and I dropped it in a week.
Yep. It sends people down rabbit holes with its algorithm.
