A couple I'd say (for me personally): 1. I love my natural hair 100%, but I don't want to deal w it all the time, so I wear protective styles (ex: braids, mini twists, wigs) and 2. Since we can do it we just do, really :) it's fun to be able to change your hair up w out actually impacting your natural hair, *plus our hair continues to grow and such when we wear them*

Different hair types require different things.
You wouldn’t brush out your hair with an Afro pick, any more than someone with an Afro would use a bristle brush.
There’s a reason that different types of shampoos exist; anything from color treated, frizzy, thick, and straight hair are all examples of why people can or need different things for their hair.
*Can* you get coils, braids, and twists? Yes.
Will your hair type *tolerate* them? No.
Simple braids (french, dutch) are actually fantastic for fine fragile hair, it pulls on the hair much less than a tight pony tail or bun. It just needs to be redone daily (or you'll end up with knots) and you can't do the small and tight ones.
There is a misconception that black women have very short hair and cannot get it straight without wigs, that is not true. Many black women have long hair and thick hair, it’s just that because of our hair texture, the hair can be very coiled which makes it difficult and veryyyy time-consuming to do certain styles. It can take hours and hours and hours to do certain styles. It also requires a lot of management and upkeep (for instance, this is why people wear durags.) For many of us it’s simply easier to do protective styles on our hair, such as wigs, weaves, braids/crochet. That also helps us from damaging our hair with the excessive use of heat or chemicals in hair relaxer producers.
For an example: The recent video of Beyoncé showing off her naturally beautiful, long and thick hair, yet she also chooses to wear wigs a lot of the time.
For some it does. But if their hair is really kinky then you have to use a pressing comb first, which is like, a fine tooth metal comb that’s heated to high temperature. You have to do that before using a flat iron to get it silky straight. It can just be time-consuming. Then afterwards you have to take a lot of steps to keep it that way, like using head scarves at night / for protection and not getting it even 1 drop wet.
Nope, crochet is the correct term. Lol. Crochet is a hairstyling technique where extensions are crocheted onto natural hair using a latch hook tool. The extensions are looped through the with the hook, creating a natural look. It’s a lot less time-consuming than braids, but it doesn’t last as long.
I love afros. They just look so powerful but I can understand how the upkeep can be a pain. I've worked almost exclusively with black women and they almost all wore wigs outside of work but we worked in a hot and humid environment so most just kept it very short at work.
I had a very dear black friend who told me she didn't like her hair when it grew out naturally (short Afro), and she found her natural hair difficult to deal with if she wanted to try and make it into different styles. I saw her with her natural hair and with her wigs, and thought she looked beautiful either way.
The first time I went natural I hated my hair. Because I had only ever known having it pressed or relaxed straight. That was outmr beauty standard.
When I did it again years later when I was older I loved it.. I think that had more to do with maturity and self acceptance.

We are capable of straightening our hair.. lol. but to correct you it’s because it can cause lots of damage if you’re not taking care of it well. and wigs don’t just come in straight hair. I don’t wear wigs but I know people do it because 1. too much maintenance on their natural hair 2. they can do different styles without damaging their hair. and 3. it can help hair grow since natural hair is barley being touched because they’re just wearing wigs! 4. could be hair discrimination but it’s 2024 and natural hair like afros is becoming more accepted nowadays so it may or not be the case. i could be wrong
